Weekend Wankshop 170 reveals some of my favorite secrets for playing minor pentatonic scale shapes all over the neck of your guitar! This is one of the most important tricks you can learn to take your playing to the next level. The concept is easy enough to understand, even if you don't have a ton of music theory knowledge. You'll also learn a scorching lick to help you put these concepts to use right away.
This lesson is based around C#minor pentatonic in several different positions, using root notes across all your strings instead of just relying on the low E all the time like a lot of players do. Learn those dang notes across all your strings, kids!
this lick is also a troy grady/cracking the code style downward pick slanting delight.

Thanks for watching!!! Видеоклипы
When you watch videos like this, you realise it doesnt have to be as complicated as you think it is. Great lesson thanks 😊
Crowther exactly no one else explains shit especially off of the low e especially about the b string thing.. they just fly through it cuz they already understand it but most the online teachers are so bad at explaining why things are where and what they are on the board and ways to retain this info. Just from how helpful this video was I’m gonna look to see if Ben has a beginner scale video so I can relearn them from him so I can remember more than the a minor like he said
Ben you're a bloody likeable lad.
That's how all his friends mum's describe him ;o) ;o)
Wanker
Your videos have helped me improve more with advanced guitar techniques in the last year than I've been able to do on my own in the last decade. Thanks to you, the bank gave me my car back for cleaning up my sweeps, my wife came back to me for getting my hand synchronization on point and now, I'm really hoping my dog will come back to life after I get those sweet scales going all over the neck.
Videos such as this go straight into my "guitar lessons" playlist.
"That dang minor Pentecostal scale"
Hahaha
Also enjoyed “Here’s the dumb b string”.
Uncle Ben... can you tab out and teach The Return Of The Son Of Shoogagoogagunga, they use the Pentacostal scales in that song a lot!
it's not that funny. Unless you're an american...
I prefer to play in Presbyterian mode.
ComboverSoul tig Oh, fuck off.
Dude. Thank you for explaining this in a way that made total sense! 5 million videos on RUclips about the pentatonic and yours is the only one that really needs to be shared 🤘
Dude this just completely blew my mind and cleared up so much for me in terms of moving scales around. Thank you so much.
Ben, you have quickly become one of my favorite teachers. Thank you for all you do and for teaching us easily understood and applicable techniques on the guitar.
Really have been enjoying watching your videos over the past year, you have taught me more in that frame of time than I was ever able to self teach myself from books and random videos. You are a wonderful teacher and you have a great stage presence...witty but intelligent. Easy to watch and very articulate, thanks Uncle Ben!
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, Uncle Ben! Your the best teacher on RUclips by far!
Thanks Ben. Easy to follow and informative af as always
I appreciate your humor and teaching style! Thanks !
Your lessons are superb. Absolutely brilliant explanation.
Great lesson,thank you for sharing!
Thank you very much Ben. Have a wonderful day.
Love your lessons, Ben! Entertaining, informative and just the right amount of talking / teaching vs. playing. Keep up the great work!
wow, excellent lesson! Breaks the boxes, by building smaller boxes. Genius.
Your ability to recognize and deconstruct guitar player cliches makes your lesson work really accessible. Very cool.
This is one of the most useful guitar lessons on youtube, thank you.
Always inspiring and one of the best guitar lessons ever,
Love u uncle ben💓
This was so very helpful! Thank-you very much, Ben!
Hey, Ben! Great video. This is just about exactly where I am in my guitar learning efforts. I now understand the mechanics of this scale. I just need to become faster. As always, thanks much for everything!
Hey, nice work Ben. Great way to think about it .
This was super easy to digest, learned as the video played. just paused a few times and rewound few times. And now I look at the fret board differently
This is the best way I’ve heard it explained. Great work 🤘🏻
The best explaination i have ever seen. Thank you.
Ha ha.You never stop learning. I'm 52, been playing guitar since starting classical guitar as a nipper. I thought that I'd used this scale, and thought of it each and every way possible over the years but I never made this simple connection. Way to go Ben and thanks. This is something that I know a few of my students are going to get a big help from. Cheers.
Excellent tutorial so useful thx for sharing
Your lessons are excellent. Thanks Ben
Nice lesson and nice guitar sound!
this lesson is Pure Gold !!!
You have a very good way of explaining this stuff-the kind of stuff that always intimidated me as a kid, and continues to as an adult. And even though i can understand what's happening, i can't imagine a time when i'll be able to know and remember it all at a level that would let me work with it in 'real time.' Shredding baffles me! I don't have the memory/mind for it 'at my age.' I need to just take it glacially slow, and hope i can retain things toward when it gets to be intuitive. Thank you for this perspective.
One of the most helpful videos I've seen, 🤘
How can anyone possibly give a "thumbs down" to a very cool FREE lesson that's systematically broken down in a very simple, concise, and practical way, with variations for picking patterns also explained. Greetings to you from Ireland Ben, and I wish you lots of luck for sharing your knowledge, wisdom and great technique. Keep on doing what you do!....Tom thumb - (up).
Also thank you for expanding my knowledge on scales, that hard core red pill 👌🏻
Very cool Uncle Ben! I have been playing the one octave scale game for a while, this lesson added a couple a new twists. Thanks! I think pentatonic scales are great for DW pick slanting practice. It really helps me get used to the feel of it.
Glad I found your videos.... you really explain things very clear and I've been playing 40 years... never too old to learn new things....I consider myself a hack because I never can sit down and just practice...my attention span is very short. I get in the habit of watching lessons that are way too advanced for my skill level and end up just watching. With your lessons I actually keep playing along and learn stuff that I should know in my sleep by now. Thanks for your help!!!!! Now maybe I can be that rock star I always dreamed about being 😂 😂 😂
Thank you,Thank you. That was a great lesson
Whoa, mind is blown. Not at first by this lesson, but by the link to Troy Grady. I finally got to the meat of his series (episode 9) and now know what you mean about pick slanting. Crazyiness is going to ensue! I love the way you are chunking this lesson up for us, now I get the value of your lesson. Shreddicus Maximus here I come!
Helpful lesson sir appreciate it I added this to my lessons playlist so I can watch it when I get to my guitar. And I’ll be looking up other videos of yours on the basic scales for beginners because I never totally learned them properly and you seem to explain things well and give reasons that help me understand and retain I.e. the “stupid b string thing.” info thanks again
Dude. I am so glad I found you on UG. Seriously bud, your scale explanation stuff is eye-opening.
Ben this is beyond great thank you very much
Thanks Ben. Super helpful.
Nice! Good stuff as usual.
Nobody breaks it down like uncle Ben. Your videos are making me a little less of a disgraceful butcher each time. thanks man
Great video uncle Ben! I don't practice as much as I should but this video definitely has me thinking & looking at the fretboard differently... should come in handy in my "dad garage band" 🤘🤘🤘
Cheers Uncle these are really good lessons.
Awesome lesson! Thanks Uncle Ben! 😀
When you take into account you can play the same note in 12 different places, licks like this become a lot clearer and funner, hectic lesson man!
You must be counting octaves, otherwise it would be 6 places (on a 24 fret guitar) for the lowest note and 5 (or less) places for the others. Example: High E (329.63 Hz)
24th fret, 6th string; 19th fret, 5th string; 14th fret, 4th string; 9th fret, 3rd string; 5th fret, 2nd string; Open, 1st string
Monster RAM I am actually, considering the lick shown spans from the first octave of the neck to the second, it just made more sense to say 12 than 6, (ex. 5th On the low E and 17 are both A notes, so yes, I’m counting octaves) but I never thought about it your way, interesting stuff man👌
Awesome Lesson!!
excellent lesson
For nearly 20 years I’ve understood the theory of this, but never thought I’d actually be able to play up the fretboard naturally. Looking at this as simply the connection of root notes is just what I needed to move forward!
The number of times I say "OH!!!?!" in your videos is almost uncountable... keep it up dude! Love your stuff!
I feel as if I have reach a paradigm shift in my playing after the secret of dealing with the “stupid B string. Uncle Ben, I am forever grateful for this simple yet effective explanation.
Awesome lesson, thank you bro
I thought I had a really nice guitar collection, but DAMN DUDE... you have a really diverse and amazing collection. I love your videos too. Great work!
This lesson was a lot of fun trying to do it on my Yamaha non-cuttaway acoustic guitar. :)
GREAT lesson! Thank you!
Eye opener! Thank you 🙏
Thanks Uncle Ben.
Love how Uncle Ben always tells us what kind of guitar he's using in the description.
Best video ever!!! Serious lightbulb moment!
This is really helpful.Thank you

You rock Uncle Ben!!
Thank you!!!! This alot of help

Franklin
Man i recently discover your chanel and i love it very useful information
Thanks I needed that. Very useful.
This was a great video, Uncle Ben! One of the most informative lessons ever. So, by knowing where the root notes are, you can play the pentatonic scale all over the fretboard, but you don't necessarily need to know the other box shapes. This builds them in with some simple knowledge, just beware of that dumb B-string!
You are the Best Teacher on RUclips, thanks 👍👍
I'm loving that plank your playing!
These all fit within the 5 pentatonic scale shapes perfectly. Really nice technique to make moving around a little faster if you do not have all the scale shapes down across the neck in all positions perfectly (cause that ain't easy) but can work out the notes quickly.
Awesome vids Mr Eller! When I was much younger I became firmly entrenched in box shapes, all rooted from the low E. I haven’t played in so very long and I admit, I’ve been confined to the boxed in way of thinking. I’m much older now and have finally found the time to start working on this again. Yeah, I’m the “step dad” persona you refer to but I’m plodding through with great inspiration! I thank you for generously posting this educational material! Btw, any disciple of Paul Gilbert is someone I’ll pay close attention to. Keep the vids coming, and thanks! Merry Christmas!
''Win Win Scenario'' Great lesson Ben Eller! You know how to teach.
Great lesson , you’ve answered a question I never knew how to ask ….thanks
Thanks Uncle Ben
Ben , great video.
Bad ass, thanks Uncle Ben!
Nice lesson!!!
nice G&L, and nice 'splainin' the lick.

Excellent.
Nice lesson, uncle Ben 👍
Cool trick!
Uncle Ben!! I watch you all the time! I still suck, but I'm getting better thanks to you!! :)
Simple yet powerful :)

its proof of the truth.
Holy.. That also works with other scales. I love it
I *LOVE* the key of Fret Five Minor!
You just got a new subscriber. Between this type of run I've been meaning to learn and the new mindset on country chickin pickin video, I'm a new fan.
Nicely explained Ben! Thanks :>)
Thanks a million Uncle Ben! I had been a guitar player for 34 years when I got hit with a rare brain tumor. It wiped all of my guitar knowledge and muscle memory. That was 2 years ago and I am still working my way back to proficiency. Your tutorials are a Godsend and I can't thank you enough.
awesome instruction, Ben ... within 6 minutes I learned something cool! I never thought of it like that, but easily I'll never forget that dumb B string! Thanks man!
Love that guitar
That helped my playing... Thanx
