Hey kids! Its Uncle Ben Eller here with Weekend Wankshop 261: Sick SICK Sixes!
In this video, i'm going to show you all my 3 favorite easy to shred scale sequences that are all centered around the number 6! These patterns are very much inspired by shred masters like Paul Gilbert, and can be applied to ANY 3 note per string scale shape.Practice these licks for a couple weeks and i guarantee you'll be getting speeding tickets from the fuzz in no time!
In this lesson i will be showing you all Straight 6's, Alt 6's, and Split 6's being used ascending through an A Lydian scale. Along the way, you'll also get tips about hand synchronization, downward and upward pickslanting (ala Troy Grady's Cracking the Code series), phrasing, and using these sequences creatively in your soloing by mixing up your timing and the shapes themselves. If you're looking for great alternate picking exercises that you can use in a musical context, you've come to the right place!
Playing my Ibanez RG550 in my Fallout finish, which is loaded with the amazing Fishman Fluence Open Core pickup set, into my Fractal Audio AXE FX III.

I don't understand why RUclipsrs make videos that take minutes before they get to the point. I post the times too. They haven't figured out that people are not interested in the talking and don't want to waste their time waiting for the content.
@@R_Thomp coz they are not robots.
@@qwertyzxcv123 :)
@@kostikyoda1078 I think he's a good player and like his content but that has nothing to do with the filler in the videos that RUclipsrs make. As far as having exposure to content that's not an issue for me, I study under a studio musician who teaches me shred, gypsy, fusion, jazz, bluegrass, country, theory, technique, and other stuff not in music books. I have no problems when it comes to learning real guitar. These licks were "in" in 1989, that's when I learned this type of shred...
@@kostikyoda1078 😂
I practiced this for 45 mins and now I can breathe underwater, thank you.
More sorcery from Mr. Eller. His dayum alt-picking exercises have sent me back to my room more times this week than my step-dad.

Best teacher on RUclips
Slashscs8209 Uncle Ben is the best teacher in the world
Paul Gilbert entered the chat... 😂
Ben is great. Rick Beato is the SHIIIIIIIIITTT.
STEVE Stine is decent too
@@dakotahooper6109 steve gives me verry unsettling vibes tho
@@r4yy28 here I thought it was just me. Regardless, Steve is a damn fine theory teacher.
Me: tries this
Me to my pinky: you are weak, your bloodline is weak, and you will not survive the winter
You know what that means? You should be playing sequences that require a lot of pinky use to get that sucker in shape. We all had these struggles, my friend!
Also, that was pretty funny 😅
I can relate!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
@KyserTheHun Django never needed his pinky :)
Ivan Drago says , " If he Dies, He dies."
oddly enough my weak link has always been my ring finger lmao its been hell getting it to fall in line
I love me some uncle ben! Well rounded teacher with twists of humor peppered in. 😆It’s a great formula.
Mmmmhhhh....well-rounded.
you know what else is boring? watching the advertisements all the way through...but i do it for you Uncle Ben.:)
Mike Spor lol sorry man, if it makes you feel better, they pay my bills!
@@BenEller fun fact, whenever there is an advertisement, i let it play through and that's when i practice what you taught... or I go get another beer.
seriously the best teacher on the tubes
People wouldn't be having problems with alternate picking if they were practicing THE PUNISHER!!!
3 is an odd number. I learn SO MUCH FROM THIS MAN.
But wait there's more, any odd number times 2 become even!!! I am learning mathematics as well :)
I mean… that’s common sense
wow slowdown egghead 🤓
Someone commented, thank you for giving me the desire to practice more and I say, thank you for giving me the desire to ask my son in law for my guitar back so I CAN practice more! That may sound a bit callous but my father left me his Les Paul Gibson, (not sure of year, somewhere between 58 and 63 and looks exactly like that cherry red one Angus Young likes to play). I never learned how to play guitar but always wanted too, just never figured I’d get the chance so I gave it to my son in law who has never once played in in 3 years; it just hangs on his wall for decoration. I started to take piano lessons when I was 17 but I play by ear; never could read music and the teacher insisted I read the music only which looked like Greek to me. I used to sing though so I learned a little bit. However, your teaching is fabulous and really makes sense to me. It is explained well and demonstrated well. I can see, and hear what your doing and am pretty good at playing what I hear and see, at least on a piano. Hopefully I can translate that to guitar. I’ve only seen two of your videos and I love them! Gotta find some way of getting that guitar back! Thank you!!!
You are the first RUclipsr I ever gave money to. Thanks for being awesome! This world needs more people like you with real skill and a fuckin' backbone.
"Playing straight through scales in the middle of your solos is difficult and boring"
The best intro to a guitar lesson I have ever seen. Honest, hilarious, and informative.
Gee, I don't know seems to work well for John Petrucci :)
You won't find a better guitar instructor on youtube than Uncle Ben, IMO. Thanks for helping me not suck at guitar. I have grown leaps and bounds since I found your channel. 🎸👍
this concept is the smartest thing I've seen since my friend showed me how to butter the loaf THEN slice it so you don't rip it...and speaking of ripping it, yess!
Can’t help noticing the Metamorphosis of Narcissus print on the wall. Love a bit of Dali 😜
FYI for those who may not know... a lydian scale has a raised 4th and is the same notes as the major scale of the 5th... so if you play an A lydian scale it's really the same as an E major scale. This is the same in any key, and if it's easier for you to play a minor scale it's the 3rd's minor scale... in this case a C# minor scale.
Happy Pickin'
edit... ps, no dis to you Ben with me sharing this and I do thank you for the vid.
🤣 garlic powder. For me its always been seasoning salt. For real GREAT lesson. This helps my solos to not be boring.
Doubling threes...brilliant! Talk about hidden in plain sight. Alt pickers unite!
How You Doin Boy!
Robert Baker A BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
@Bruce Rodrigo I've seen ur comment before too bad i don't have a girlfriend otherwise i would've downloaded ur app right away

I’ve been playing guitar for 38 years (yikes-just scared myself) and I would just like to say that your lessons and teaching method are the best I’ve found on RUclips. Thanks.
Whoa my pinky finger is not weak Uncle Ben!!!
Possibly the best alternate picking tutorial ever!
Thanks, Uncle Ben! Now we know!
Thank you for sharing this brother !!!.
Thanks Ben..... another great lesson..
i don’t really have a practice routine cause i don’t really “like” practicing with a metronome, like i’d rather practice songs with techniques that i want to practice but you uncle ben really inspire me to practice with your videos. Thank you for giving me the motivation to become a better guitarist!!
Same here. Uncle Ben got in my head on the first video I watched.
Same here 😂
Same here! I’m really glad that Ben Eller is my uncle!
Fred Paci yeah he’s the cool uncle everybody wishes they had!!
Yeah, thanks uncle Ben!
Great lesson, thanks Uncle Ben
Your the best! Thank you for your excellent videos! Keep em comming Ben
You should be endorsed by youtube because u r one of their biggest musical assists.
U could basically be employed by them as a RUclips guitar teacher, ur free lessons r more useful then most of the other 1mil plus subscriber channels combined
Incredibly effective lessons Uncle, thanx!!!
This lesson is invaluable. Heading to your Patreon now.
Buh buh buh Beny and the frets!
Another helpful lesson broski
*Paul Gilbert intensifies*
Thanks for the great content as usual Uncle Ben 🤘🏼
Ben…. I would adopt you but then you wouldn’t be my Uncle. Thanks man!!!
You are Golden!
the best teacher on youtube. tells you the secret and truth about shredding, unlike other turorial vids that only gives you headache and very complicated exercises that aren't really beginner friendly, only cares for views and all that sh*t. lol
Six, six, sick! The number of the Ben.
Ive been subbed for a long time man, lessons like these is exactly why. So many crums of gold hidden in this one. Thanks!
This was the best exercise Ive ever had. I want my picking to be able to be like yours ..
Thanks Uncle Ben
You are a great teacher. Thank you for this.
Thanks a lot Ben, this is one of if not the most comprehensive and easiest to understand video on shredding that I've ever seen!
Thank you uncle Ben
I really think Ben is an awesome teacher. He NEVER mis-speaks a single word, his fluid speech is worthy of an TV Anchor Man.. Anyway that trait makes it so easy to follow him. THANKS from "Mr Step-dad speed".
As usual brilliant, insightful stuff, addressing many of the nuances. Ben, you're possibly the best teacher on YT. Thanks.
You good people, Uncle Ben.
Excellent video! Best one yet for me! Mixing them up generates lots of possibilities. Thanks Uncle Ben!!
Great practice routine Uncle Ben. Your awesome 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I’m only 9 minutes into this video and i’m inspired 🤟🏻looking forward to trying some of these ideas, thanks!
Thank you uncle ben. I’ve been practicing more than 4 hours everyday recently and your videos really helps me giving a good understanding of where to start. They are a major inspiration. Keep shredding uncle.
Slice of Fried Gold!!!!! Fantastic Ben, love your videos and how you explain what you do , thanks man. Cheers -Willie-
Not only does Uncle Ben give us the coveted licks of the Gods, he provides the home school math to boot! I can only count on one hand!
What a fount of knowledge! Ben you're a national treasure. I'm liking that Ibanez too.
Hey bro thanks for your vids. I really like watching them. Im going on 35 years playing now. Always enjoy to learn some cool ideas 🎸
Very practical, very helpful especially for a guy known for his rice.
Really appreciate it Uncle Ben
First time I've seen one of your videos . . . . . . Wow. Guess I'll be living here for a while. 🎸🎸🎸
Can't believe I didn't see this video.
I think this is gonna be my gold mine lesson
You seriously are the best guitar teacher uncle Ben! You always make me want to get better and better at the craft...of shredding 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Fegging awesome teacher. Thanks for sharing this man, love it.
Really great tips for making scales sound cool, and getting shreddin!! .thank you . 🔥🎸
Thanks Uncle Ben, you're my hero
Thanks for the video! This really hits home! Trying to change up my practice habits. Cheers!
A friend of mine does a pattern he calls "backpedaling" similar to what you showed at the end of the video, but he also plays the notes descending. He ascends three strings (EAD) then reverses and descends (DA) then ascends three strings (ADG) then reverses two strings and so on. Once you get to the top you reverse the whole pattern and play it descending three strings then ascending two. It makes for an enormous lick that lasts forever
I am a mutant. I forced work on my pinky at a very early point and now I have an insane pinky and do all kinds of weird wide runs. But I have other problems. No matter what you work on, you'll neglect something else. The fun is in the phrasing. But this is what someone meant who I heard recently saying that Marty Friedman's playing is based on patterns of 6 notes. I was envisioning 6 notes on 2 strings - makes no sense. This is brilliant though - I shall have to work on this.
This video was the “ah ha” moment for all the modal training and picking exercises I’ve been working on the last couple months. I was having no problem navigating the scales and landing on the “right” notes but whenever I tried to burn in between phrasing I would just end up noodle shredding up and down the scale, this explained exactly what I was confused about, more than enough to chew on for a while. Thank you!
Dude same here the instant he mentioned how much less work goes into the even patterns it totally changed my perspective on navigating scales
Very sweet alternate picking, ser. Also an informative and challenging tute.
I love your channel man. A lot of these patterns and exercises have helped my playing tremendously. Keep it up!
DUDE I JUST LOVE WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS...EVEN IF I DONT HAVE MY GUITAR WITH ME. YOU'RE JUST AN ENTERTAINING DUDE. AND YOU HAVE AN AWESOME WAY OF EXPLAINING THINGS IN A WAY THAT JUST CLICKS IN MY MIND TO WHERE I UNDERSTAND IT AND I'VE ACTUALLY GOTTEN ALOT BETTER SINCE WATCHING YOUR CHANNEL...AND MY LAST NAME IS ALSO ELLER! just realized i had caps lock on...not retyping it all...enjoy lol
cheers Uncle Ben, most help full.
Thank you uncle ben...
Thank you been ver.y much for your teaching,, simple ideas that can be built on and make your own phrasing etc
Keep them coming you rock man 👊 🎸🥇💖🌠
Ben shreds harder than a wood chipper
He more shredded than a Julienne salad, man.
I see you everywhere on RUclips wtf
Well, I think it is because we have similar interests. Who knows the algorithms they use in this crazy, mixed up world. You know to be honest I can't say that I recognize you, but I suppose it is always nice meeting a fan.
@@StuPedassol He was talking to the guy sans-stache
Very cool lesson Uncle Ben. Thanks again man.
Good stuff, Uncle Ben!
Thanks posting great lessons... Even for those of us play at step dad speed.
Very effective, some great ideas here that lead to creative offshoots.
I like the benefit of practicing the alt 6’s helps to stop the flying finger
Really great stuff Sir! I love your shred vocabulary. It’s practical and spot on. Thanks a bunch
the garlic powder bit got me, thank u
Awesome lesson Uncle Ben!!
Your Step Dad shred skills are awesome Uncle Ben, thx again 4 all you share with us, now i gotta practice this one, hey could u plz do some Paul Gilbert taps & Hammer on's ? i luv that kinda stuff, thx again, take your vegatables & eat your medicine
Thank you so much Ben. Since I've been watching you and practicing, my skills have sharpened as with my knowledge.
Uncle ben, i wish you were there back in 2008. I wanted to play bass to cover maiden/Metallica... i did the best i could but still, they asked me to turn my bass off. Now after 12 years, I believe i can play bass/guitar leads behind any backing track. But still, lack the speed to make a crowd go wild. You are my hero!!!!
Ben, You're hilarious. Beautiful Ibanez. I always appreciate your guitar lessons.
Awesome video and thanks for sharing your tips 👍
Thanks for posting this up! I just went from blues box to burn.
Great info Ben! 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Great teacher
practice, practice, practice....... nice job Ben!!! just started today to pick like this.... very hard!!! thank you!
Man, that run at 13:30 is awesome!
It instantly made me nod my head which means something without bass and drums.
On the lower strings that pattern could also be used for some tasty riffs.
Got to try it!
Great lesson man, really enjoyed this one.
I concur, you are the best teacher on youtube. Always try to make things easier.. and your style is easy to the eyes too.. thanks for your lessons
Why thank you, Ben. 👍👍👍✨
As always great video!
Thanks dad.
Love that Ibanez.
Excellent video, Ben! Some great patterns to work on, for sure.
Dude, you're the best. Thank you.
Great video as always Ben! :)
Yay! New warmups!
btw, I love you as much as I love the freak guitar labs IA has recently uploaded!
