    Correct on the base clear. I restore 60’s mustangs and Camaro’s and I went to base clear in the late 90’s but the amount of shrinkage was crazy. I went back to PPG acrylic urethane . Once the vehicle is painted I let it sit in the sun for a month and then wet sand smooth to take out shrinkage, then another couple coats of A/U then do clear. The clear is only for the shine factor.

    • @teams.t.e.a.m6214
      @teams.t.e.a.m6214  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah...shrinkage is an issue that doesn't really come up that often in the work truck painting world...but it's an issue that novice and early year painters will have to confront and deal with at some point for sure. You fine folks in the car restoration business would know probably better than anybody about it though. I always warn folks of not really applying clear beyond 2 or 3 coats for exactly that reason. Thanks a lot!

    Nice job on the hood repair. That poor hood has had a rough life. My first thought would
    have been to use a piece of KD lumber because it's lighter weight, but you brought up a
    good point about the green treated lumber not having issues with moisture, if it were to
    somehow get water inside of the repair...
    I like the blue on the fenders. Is there a reason why the company has all of the trucks done
    in the same colors, instead of maybe using different colors on the fenders ?
    You bring up some good points about B/C. I still remember when Imron first came out.
    Everyone thought that it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. It is a good product,
    but like any product, it has to be used properly.
    It says a lot about the company when they spend the money to fix the mechanical issues,
    as well as the paint before sending them to auction. It will make someone a good truck.,
    and they can put it to work right after they buy it.
    Lookin forward to the next project...

    I might get flamed for this, but I HATE base/clear. Takes longer, costs more, fails more frequently than SS, etc. Yes it is useful on Metallics but I think metallics belong on hot rods anyways. Camrys and the like don’t need candy apple red paint, save that for the custom cars. Solid color single stage will easily last decades with proper prep work and good care. Super easy to blend, IMO.

      When we fiberglass boats we wear a cheap grain dust style cover all's to keep the fiberglass away from cloths and for the cost it sure save body scraping and scratching from fibers
      Cheap investment helps comfort
