I worked in Ashburn for 19 years at a company that changed its name several times. (Hint: it's one of the flagship companies in what is now called Quantum Park.) The number of data centers on and around the property has gone up through the years -- and even more in the four years that I've been gone. I assume even more will come in with the Metro now being open at Loudoun Gateway!
Working in our NOC on 9/11/2001 was a profound experience. (Yup. I'm old.) We saw how tight security became in the area (due to a flight from Dulles being attacked as well as securing MAE East). We discovered that the building had HUGE backup generators that could keep the NOC sufficient for up to 2 weeks.
    Great video!

thanks for watching and the insight. I wasn't even born yet when 9/11 happened but I know it profoundly changed the nation and the world.

@@sammymarrco47 Yeah, I'd say we've never entirely recovered from it mentally (for that matter I'd say America never entirely mentally recovered from the JFK assassination, Vietnam, and Watergate either).

So a huge chunk of the Internet COULD be shut down in one major terrorist strike (or even squirrels chewing on wires). That one South Park episode actually wasn't too far from reality. I believe the technical term for this is "single point of failure".
    That's pretty terrifying.

there are other data centers, but it would be nice if it were more distributed. it would have to be a crazy terror attack for that tho!
