Hi Hanson, I love the Pro and you went on about the automatic transmission, but you really should have made the important point that the Pro also is available with a 6 speed manual which is a game changer for me. I owned 2 stick shift Tacomas in my life and I would definitely get another one. The Tacoma and the Jeep Gladiator are the only mid-size rigs to offer a manual. By the way on another point, I agree that the army green is the best color in my opinion.
If you like to wrench on your truck, get the TRD off-road and put on better UCAs, gears and better shocks (BP51, kings, fox.. etc). If you don't like to wrench and like all of the badges, get the TRD Pro. It's a great truck. I have an 18 TRD off-road, and I did the BP51s, nitro UCAs and gears. solid information and great review. I felt some slights towards the pro, but my big stick is with the 5' bed. If it has a long bed, I'd buy this truck today.
I’ve owned two Tacoma’s, the first one was a 2016 limited long bed, and the second was 2020 Trd off-road short bed. I much prefer the short bed to the long bed after owning a long bed for around 3 and a half years. The short fits in my garage, and also I get better fuel economy. Plus it fits in parking spots much better. I can either use my trailer or go to my local Uhaul if I need to fit something larger than 5ft in the bed.
@@samuelrowland76 Well... I've currently in a 2016 TRD OR DCSB and have a 2021 TRD OR DCLB on the way. About 8 weeks out. My logic is being; for 20K, I re-up my truck with zero miles, get my long bed, leather interior and get the 'fixed' transmission. With the feedback on the transmission being mediocre, I may just punt and work on what I have. since you've had a 2016 and 2020. Did you see an improvement in transmission?
@@ghall1314 I feel there was a big improvement from 16-20 transmission wise. It’s a lot easier to sit at 70 mph on the highway without the truck trying to down shift, and also while towing it stays in 5 gear much more while the 2016 often tried to go down to 4th and 3rd.
just bought the pro . Glad I did ! Was about buying ridgeline due to the new restyle. Wife mentioned it look like Honda Pilot with a bed in the back which is somehow agree . Tacoma look much better
I recently test drove a 2021 TRD Off Road and a 2021 TRD Sport and the ride quality in the Sport was vastly smoother and less choppy than the Off Road. The stiffer suspension and larger tires on the Off Road made a poor ride. I purchased the TRD Sport because I’m not a serious off roader. I want a daily driver and still have good off road capability when I need it. The Sport trim has the same 9.4 inch ground clearance and skid plates. I got the optional LED package and Technology package and still came out several thousand dollars cheaper than the TRD Off Road.
I got the Limited 2021, really like it, but my comment is about the 6 speed auto, we have a light RV trailer (3500) the trans pulls it great. I had a 2nd generation Tacoma 4 liter and even a slight incline while using cruise control would kick the RPM to 4-5 thou, not so with the 6 speed, don’t miss that .5 liter at all. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
Though the tundra and Tacoma had somewhat evolved and maintained the aggressive exterior look, I feel like the interior is so far behind compared to their competitions. Even if you're more after the reliability and build quality rather than the aesthetic and tech features, for the amount of money you're paying for these trucks, you would of course expect a more updated and modernized features
I know what you’re saying but a lot of the modern interior features seem unnecessary to me. Like what do I need a motor to move my seat for? Pulling the bar and pushing it back or forth is quicker and just as effective. Are there other features you think it is missing?
The only reason to buy the Off Road over the Pro is if you plan on yanking the factroy suspension and putting in something that allows you to put on bigger tires (or if you're on a tight budget). I've owned both and the Off Road is a fine vehicle. First thing I did when I got my Pro was put in a Wescott lift spacer lift and 33" tires.
I got a 2018 double cab SR5 and its perfect for anything I throw at it camping, hiking, any garbage hauling, or material for house upgrades. Roughest off roading I do is looking for camping or hiking spots , I really couldnt see the need for a TRD for my personal use or paying an extra 20k more... What he said is true if you off-road it might be worth it but thats a big price dif.
Unless you make 100k/year no vehicle that costs you as much as a second mortgage is worth it, no matter how badass it is. There, saved you the time. This is what sucks about the automobile industry these days.
I had a 2016 TRD Sport. I bought it with plans to keep it, as I had kept my previous Toyota for 15 years. However, when I took the Sport in for regular service, the dealer offered me such a good deal, to trade to the Pro, that I could not pass it up. Also, with the sales tax break you get, from the State of Indiana, if you trade, it was not an advantage to sell the Sport outright. The Sport was great. I would surmise that the trim level is choice based on the purchaser's individual considerations, which may include budget. My reason for buying the Pro was the lust I had for the color...lol...One thing is for sure, if you purchase any Toyota product, it is likely to hold it's value you well, and you probably will not have to see your service department a lot. The dealer currently is bugging me to sell our FJ Cruiserto them, outright, for more than I paid for it, 4 years and 50k miles ago.
@@terrynichol577 you say that but that's not what I was saying. The pro is way over priced to just get a few more functions than the offroad package. The suspension is supposed to be the biggest convincing part about buying a pro from any of the other models. If you know anything about cars and the difference between what you're getting than you would know it's not worth it. With the price difference between that and even the sr5 model you can easily upgrade the "lower" end model to be better and still have money left over . If you're talking about cheap you've obviously haven't seen how the ranger, colorado and even the frontier have outclassed the tacoma. #facts

I'm just saying for what the Pros are going for it's better to go another route. Enjoy your truck man.
I have a 2017 cement TRD Pro. The only disappointment is the necessity of the ECT button. With 278 hp, you should not have the motor keep upshifting on a mild expressway grade. That much power in a light pick up truck should come on early instead of having to hit 4000K RPMs. The 2013 I had before had low end torque. I would sacrifice lower gas mileage for more power in the low rev's.
Would be nice if they offered a "long bed" option for this truck with the extended cab. I realize that they probably don't because of the difficulties presented from the longer wheelbase, but I think that's a choice that the buyer should be able to make. Short beds just aren't large enough for the things I use a truck for.
@@VC30577 I ended up picking up a double cab, long bed TRD Sport shortly after commenting this. The only disadvantage of a long truck is that the longer wheelbase can cause high centering and scraping when going over high, narrow bumps. I'm extremely happy with my truck it's handled everything I've needed with ease. All of that said, I'd recommend going for a TRD off road if you can find a long bed, (they do exist). The TRD sport really doesn't offer any functionality over the SR5, and you're really just paying a few grand more for a hood scoop. TRD off road offers locking rear differential and crawl control.

I’ll save you the time: NO! Either go with a TRD Off-road or Sport and use the rest of the money you saved for mods. And if you want to even save more money, then go with the SR5
Well the resale on the model matters lol. You can build up a sport all you want... when resale, they will give you price for the sport... and not your upgrades so you lose money in the end. Resale on trade pro is much higher then sport.

I'm probably going to lease the TRD offroad Toyota has had a lease special $279 month with 2999 down for almost 4-5 months total of about 13k over the 3 years that's probably cheaper than a corolla or a Camry right now and after three years I scan get a newer one. xD Chevy has similar offers on the silverado and the colorado but their base trims rarely you see lease offers on their higher trims.
Here's another thing you need to see if yur truck has Is a transmission cooler you supposed to get one with a tow package now Toyota wants u buy it separately.
The bed length is an issue for be also. That combo would be gone in seconds. Its the same wheel base and a TRD OR DCSB and not sure why Toyota is holding out.
@@ghall1314 Toyota needs to hear from more people who would be interested in the configuration described. Otherwise, there's no market for that type of truck. I'll add one more controversial suggestion for the Tacoma TRD Pro: offer a supercharged turbo diesel with the ability to tow 8,000 lbs (currently 6,400) and haul 3,000 lbs (currently 1,440). Offer that combination and I'll buy one. People might say; why not just buy a 3/4 tonne truck. The reason I'm not interested in a truck bigger than the Tacoma is because the size of the Tacoma is ideal, making it easier to use as a daily driver. Unfortunately, Toyota will never produce what I'm suggesting since they would likely never sell enough of the trucks. However, I find it odd that they still offer a manual transmission in their trucks. There's a smaller and smaller group of people that want a manual, and they produce it for them, so why not produce a more robust TRD Pro that could be a great combination of luxury, off road capability and just as easily be a powerful towing/hauling work horse. It would be the ultimate Tacoma.
@@RedondoBeach2 Right on with the multitude of requests out there. Honestly if you dive down to the real need, its more power and efficiency in a compact truck. Less means more. I've just done the aluminum tonneau cover & skid plates/catalytic converter 🛡️ from RCI to keep the tweakers off of my 🛻💨 mine came with the side steps, all weather floor mats, bed lights, blackout badges, mud flaps & exhaust tip so mine looks pretty good it's not too plain but not all fancy I don't want to lift it because it's high enough off the ground for whatever I'll do & I don't need any worse mileage having bigger tires & shit if you know how to drive decent this truck will go anywhere most ppl need to go
I have a 19 pro voodoo blue. I love this truck. Got it at a steal too granted this was pre COVID. $47k out the door w taxes included
Stick or automatic?
Hi Hanson, I love the Pro and you went on about the automatic transmission, but you really should have made the important point that the Pro also is available with a 6 speed manual which is a game changer for me. I owned 2 stick shift Tacomas in my life and I would definitely get another one. The Tacoma and the Jeep Gladiator are the only mid-size rigs to offer a manual. By the way on another point, I agree that the army green is the best color in my opinion.
Very true! I would love to have tested the manual. I’ll be sure to mention it next time.
Anyone with an automatic trd pro should be ashamed of them selves
If you like to wrench on your truck, get the TRD off-road and put on better UCAs, gears and better shocks (BP51, kings, fox.. etc). If you don't like to wrench and like all of the badges, get the TRD Pro. It's a great truck. I have an 18 TRD off-road, and I did the BP51s, nitro UCAs and gears. It's currently at 96k miles and I absolutely love this thing. Either way you can't go wrong.
Hands down the best video review!
I really aim to own one of these just because growing up I saw how my dad's 22re lasted him 28 years almost. Just died and fell apart because of rust last year but dame was that truck reliable. Now as an adult I see why I should aim for something like this that is worth the money and will last apart from my bmw which has given a lot of smiles but a lot of headaches with maintenance 😂
Sold lmao!!! I do not mind less power for reliability as I'm one who would keep that truck for years. Boo to Ford and Chevy as there is NO comparison to quality and the reliability of TOYOTA... Old slogan, "I love what u do for me,!" Great review and love the new color.

Great video! Buying this for my bf this Christmas/birthday!
solid information and great review.
I worked at Fox racing shox in my home town Watsonville Ca. Good shit.

Thank you for saying damping and not dampening!
I believe that is the mirror heat button you thought was a rear defroster ?
I got the Limited 2021, really like it, but my comment is about the 6 speed auto, we have a light RV trailer (3500) the trans pulls it great. I had a 2nd generation Tacoma 4 liter and even a slight incline while using cruise control would kick the RPM to 4-5 thou, not so with the 6 speed, don’t miss that .5 liter at all. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
That’s not a rear defrost. There would be lines in the glass if it were that. That is the button for the side view mirror warmers.
The TRD Off Road is a pretty good compromise, its only about $1900 more than the SR5 and alot less than the Pro.
There are dealerships that don't mark up above MSRP on the TRD Pro, but even paying MSRP is ridiculous.
A great video. Very comprehensive.
Unless you make 100k/year no vehicle that costs you as much as a second mortgage is worth it, no matter how badass it is. There, saved you the time. This is what sucks about the automobile industry these days.
I really like your name. Pablo Escobar. I thought this guy was a similar name was famous for a reason.
Great review. Toyotas hold their value well, you can hardly go wrong buying one. ... and that is not fake news...lol
Yes about the value but the trd pro is not worth the money.
@@bigoneish pay for what you get..want cheap..go to a ranger or a canyon or something
#facts
@@briancooper5272 good for you man I'm glad you're happy with your decision. At the end of the day it's that you like enjoy and ride the hell out of that truck. But!!! I just picked up a TRD Pro last week...paid 53k without tax, lic. fees. No regrets
I'm very interested in the Tacoma, but are there issues with the automatic transmission? I keep hearing stories that there are.
Good video!!
I actually hate that Toyota offers the special edition color on lower trims the next year. It takes away from it being a special edition color.
That’s why I love the 4Runner they don’t do that and it’s made in Japan
There is a 2020 Taco TRD Pro selling for $46k with 31k miles.
Genuine question, what are the difficulties associated with a long bed? Contemplating a trd sport with the 6 foot bed for the utility aspect!
Looks like thebinside of my 2020 sport

I have a 2018 Trd pro...50k on it. The stock tires are crap in snow...my new Michelins...WAY BETTER. The ride on the highway is WAY BETTER in the PRO versus the offroad. I've had BOTH. Theres nothing floaty about it either...Ive driven 75-80mph across Montana(especially western Mt) its solid on the road. Here's another thing you need to see if yur truck has Is a transmission cooler you supposed to get one with a tow package now Toyota wants u buy it separately.
More money? No I'll keep my old taco... 😅
The TRD Pro would be perfect if offered as an access cab with a 6 ft bed. I have no need for a 4 door and the 5 ft bed is inadequate.
I"d say offering a manual (for the future..) would leave tacoma in a singular place above those trying to catch up. Keep it. Luxury can be added for a cheap cost.
