Personally I love when you save a good one for Saturday morning, kids are sleeping in right now and I’m sitting here with some coffee enjoying the show. Appreciate it and all the hard work by you and the crew.
That's great to hear! Have a great morning!
Ugh.
People slag on The Tacoma interior. Calling it “dated” or “old” but I love tbh. Functional and good looking.
Mannnn this is literally the most beautiful truck to my eyes. It looks so damn perfect
“If you value your hard earned money, this is the truck for you” That’s really the only thing you should have said. That’s why I bought one.
Congrats dude! The Tacoma has a special place in my heart because I first learned to drive on my dad’s 1996 MT SR5. He still has it with 355,000 miles and it’s his daily driver. Great trucks for the money.
Bought a 2019 red pro paid 44k . So expensive at the moment but I do not regret it . Truck has taken me across the US , numerous rough
passes and trails in Colorado and then back to work on Monday with out a hiccup .
Awesome review! Thanks for everything you guys do.
I second mason's comment, appreciate good uploads on saturday morning. Currently on the porcelain thrown, i'll pause, get outta here and make coffee and sit back to continue watching 👌👍👍
One of the best automotive channels out there!? Good job! 🙏👍🏻
You are the reason why a buy a 2018 trd pro I saw the video an fall in love with the truck I have the cavalry blue color 💙 ... keep up with the excellent work that you do I love this channel !!!
You do a good job. I like watching your reviews . Keep it up!
I’m 5’7” and own a 20 SR5 double cab long bed 4x4. The seating position is very different than my fleet owned Silverado work truck, that feels like siting in a kitchen table chair in comparison, way more upright. I like the cabin setup and I have two young kids in the back (it’s nice that they’re always within reach) but I can see how anyone larger than me or people who want to haul adults in the back would not like this cabin. Great review and I dig the silly unique trd colors even though I’m boring and got Magnetic grey metallic on my Tacoma.
At 6 foot 2- inches tall, owned every Tacoma since 1985, never 1- time did I ever have a seat issue!!! Super Charger is Life!!!
Dude big congrats on the second test hill!!!
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite review channels. I just bought my 2022sr5 4 runner based on your road trip review and off road with TFL boys. Great quality and thoroughly enjoy the production quality!
In light of today’s vehicle shortages and how dealerships are price gouging, do you mind if I ask if you got a fair price for your 4Runner?
@@bmack918 soo true, it was sticker priced which was ridiculous to begin with I think. My buddy dealer inventory Mgr orders for my local toyota dealership. He found 4 runner that i wanted on the boat from Japan . We eliminated all the extra pricy options bigger rims (hate those) privacy roll cover for storage ect. And the dealer tried to tack on 1600.00 extra mandatory fabric interior cleaner, 🙄 😒 but he made it show I put my request in before it started. So out the door I paid $40,500 for my nautical blue sr5 4×4 with tan interior. Love it, but shew.... my HD duramax kills this thing in mpg. Their are dealers that will make it only MSRP price only but have to do some digging to avoid the scum bags doing market adjustment stickers.
AWD?
@@MrMe69420 4x4 hoss
4Runner > Tacoma. Good choice
That was a damn fine and honest review. Appreciate ya
I love watching these reviews for quite a few reasons but what makes them especially special to me is the fact that I drive on i-90 every other week going from home in Western WA to Central Washington University and I am familiar with where you are driving. Since you do the off-roading in Ellensburg that basically means you are right outside the backyard of the University! lol
Your videos are the best👍😎
All of the reviewers complaining about the seating position in a Tacoma. It’s been that way for decades. Get over it!!!! It’s still one of the best selling trucks. I’m 6’4” and have no problems in my Tacoma. I’d rather drive my Tacoma over my F450 work truck or our Lincoln.
I simply do not understand the seating position complaint. Like you said, it's been this way for so long. Even my 1993 Toyota Pickup has the same seating position.
That TRD is a good climber it has all the amenities to be in the top 3.💪👏👍
Great information about the poor road tracking and frequent wheel adjustments needed. I had forgotten about that.
This make me crave for guacamole. Great review as always.
Sometimes i watch such videos and understand how good my LR Discovery is...)
The cab is the exact same size as the 2005. I had a 2012 TRD Off Road. I am 6'3 and I could never get comfortable and the seating position is brutal. I like Toyota and would get one again if they ever actually change the size of the cab and went with a turbo. I live in Wyoming and drive at elevation a lot and since going to the Ranger turbo it is night and day better than NA engine at elevation. Mostly I am just happy mid size options are now available and I think it will push Toyota to really improve the Tacoma.
Agree seating position sucks...and I'm only average male height
The engine options for the Tacoma are definitely underwhelming. Always hear good things about the ecoboost in the Ranger and GM even offers a diesel in the Colorado/Canyon. EVs will eventually take over, so maybe it is not work the R&D spend at this point. My guess it Toyota goes turbo 4 cyl. in the meantime.
@@ThomasGillot Agreed. Reliable, but slow as hell
see so many people hate the tacoma seating position but i prefer the seating position. 2020+ with the new seats are an improvement from what ive heard tho.
@@123devinzz1 I had both a 2017 and a 2020 with the new electronic seat controls. Improved....but not enough to say it is now good. Still unpleasant after 30 minutes of squirming around
Toyota is excellent off-road 👌
Let’s be honest, nobody buys this to be the fastest (0-60), the most comfortable (body-on frame), the highest tech (JBL?), or for any other spec-sheet dick-measuring. People buy the Tacoma because it’s a straightforward, no gimmicks truck that can get you anywhere AND back, last longer than your grudge for a cheating ex, and hold it’s value like you hold on to the “glory days” of high school.
This is the true review.
Meh
sold me on resale value, toyota, and the fact i only wanted a truck for when it snows but didn't want to deal with SUVS came from small cars civic, corolla, what ever lexus is, ooo can't forget about the mods PS I also rarely drive people so all that back storage and trunk space is all mine to sleep in
but if honda ever comes back with the element believe me im getting a element instead
Great video. Best midsize offroad truck ever. Im consodering a Pro. I have a Trail Edition that I love too.
Solid review.
Great review again! I bought a 2022 TRD Offroad with no options. Paid -10K less than a TRD Pro. And after this review and 2000 miles off-roading in California, Nevada and Arizona… I dont feel I missed anything with my cheaper purchase. Its a great vehicle.
Trd offroad 4x4 or just trd offroad?
I have a semi bare bones Tacoma from 2016 I bought brand new. It doesnt even have 4 wheel drive. But im not an off roader of any kind, and I have not been put in a position to where I wish I had one in the 6 years Ive owned mine.
Truthfully, unless you're a full time contractor where you would need an 8 foot bed, youre not going to find a better pick up. Its easy to drive, its small enough to squeeze through tighter spaces, its easy to park too. It even has the ability to get up and go when you put your foot down. And the fuel mileage isnt a nightmare either. Its a well balanced practical truck when you dont buy a big package version like this. Im only saying this in case someone is reading comments while theyre truck shopping
Just bought a 2022 Toyota TRD Off Road and I love it. it's the 2nd automobile I've ever owned- the first being a Honda Civic 1996 Ex. I'm so happy.
My dad has Ford King Ranch f-250 Fx4, its a beast, but not for me lol. I've driven it around and man I feel like I am going to hit everything.
14:07 Congrats btw!
It still looks tough as hell from the front. Congrats on the second property!!
This truck is 🔥🔥🔥
Impressive. I dig the lime color
This is much better than all the rest in terms of design.
when you buy Toyota you don’t buy the latest and greatest features, you buy for one thing only and that is reliability.
Love your videos! Can you review the 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO4X? I think a review of that will compliment this so much!
We've been trying to get one, but Nissan hasn't sent it to our region for review yet.
i have owned a 2010, 2014 and i now drive a a 2017 TRD off road 4X4 double cab with a 6' bed. Plenty of power on freeway, off road on road whatever...3.5 performes well even with 160k miles on it. Crawl control works well even still,,,,good luck being bias.
I had a 3.5 couldn’t even do a burn out. The acceleration is the problem. My 86 had more acceleration power.
Love your videos and so do my kids!! I would love for you to test out my 2010 Tacoma TRD off-road D-4D diesel on your hill!! 🤔👊👍
one day i’m going to own one of these bad boysssss
Good review. I just traded in my 09 Tacoma acess cab 4cyl for a 22 TRD OD It's going to be like driving a luxury vehicle and I personally don't have a problem with seating position
Good, honest review. I will guess the next generation will be nice for on-road driving. I like the Frontier more this year.
Great review of this awesome off-road machine Ryan. If I remember correctly the new sequoia with off-road package or TRD Pro has all the off-road features this Taco has which is exciting. Can’t wait for you to review the new sequoia on the same course
Correct. We're really looking forward to it.
Cool truck but I’m still glad I got the TRD off road. Best bang for your buck package!
have a 2017 tacoma offroad. only thing I did was bigger tires. best off-roader there is.
I feel like I wouldn’t miss a much just getting a Tacoma from 5 years ago
That's accurate, a 5-year-old Tacoma would be basically the exact same truck, minus the fox suspension, trail cam, and green color.
Well said, but then again, a testament o the chiche, "If it ain't broke(n)...."
Or 10 years ago!
And the price reflects that
Yah I don’t like all the upgrades. Go old school save your money. Or just get a sR model.
Great car !
I like that color. I wouldn't drive it, but I like to see it. Gives a Retro 90s or 70s vibe with that green
another gem
Oh man... I WANT that color.... I love it...
I’d love a darker green
Cheaper to paint what ever you own that color than to pay 50K for it. ;)
Amazing video Ryan! I owned a 21 Tacoma TRD off-road and loved it but switched to a TRD Pro 4Runner mainly for the cabin features and more backseat space. Wondering if you and your team have any plans to ever open up your test site to the general public? Especially with the new space.
I traded my 2017 Tacoma which I loved for a 2020 4Runner which I also love for the increased interior room due to my growing family. I would love to have this Pro though especially with its ground clearance.
@@CarnutMMwhich do you like more?
Can't wait for 2022 Frontier review .......
Yooo, those are so sexy, when I travel to school in Guanajuato, Mexico, I love seeing the trucks loaded with those TRD Pros, sadly their aren’t sold here in Mexico but it’s nice to see them make their way to the States
What I will say is the bed rating has gotta be a conservative estimate. I have an ‘03 ford ranger and have carried 2000+lbs in my bed multiple times. Sure it lifts the front end off the road but the little truck can pull it off.
Also my dream truck at the moment is a TRD pro in the military green Color but sadly I’m not going to realistically be able to afford it any time soon so this video both excited me and made me greatly depressed.
Great review.
Great review. Absolutely agree with you on the seating assessment. Was dead set on buying one of these in 2018. At 6’5”, I sat inside for a test drive, and hated it. Just not comfortable for even a test drive.
I did the same thing but in 2019… after the test drive I tried the 4Runner … I took the 4Runner by a mile.
Roof height is just way to low. Chevy Colorado is about the same. Weird they didn’t bother to accommodate tall folks. Pretty big design iversight
I'm 5'8" and was still super uncomfortable in a Tacoma lol! Floor is way to high for my liking. Went back to a full size truck
A a fellow 6'5-er, I agree. Sat in my dad's and it's a LOW seating position.
Get the tundra.
Nice. 100% less 4Runner references.
Ryan you think the Tacoma is uncomfortable...i had a JEEP rental....that made the Taco a limo in comparison. The Tundra is more comfortable. I find it better for long trips and towing. The Tacoma is an awesome truck and has a reputation for all out reliability. I think the TRD OFF ROAD is better when money is a concern. The Taco ate your test track up like all 3 meals. I am not a huge fan of the this green tho. I like the blue better Great review....have been waiting for this one for several days.
Wrangler is more compromised because it's further offroad focused... but ofcourse that has nothing to do with Jeep's pretty bad seats or some other deficiencies which it has
Wow, that was pretty impressive! It made short work of your course. Now you have to make more hard core trails on that new plot of land so you can foil the more baddass trucks.
Love the show and your offroad segment, extremely intuitive and fair. Since you did the TRD Pro, what’s the odds of showcasing a Colorado ZR2?
Watching this after the new Tacoma has been announced. That new TRD pro is wild. A very well equipped Baja truck that is no doubt fun to drive, as well as reliable being a Toyota. People are complaining about the hybrid power train I guess forgot Toyota has been making the Prius for like 20 years….
But even after seeing the new one, being in the market for a new truck. Have a 50k budget (even though that new one looks like it’s gonna start at around 60k before markups)
I think I like this truck better, it’s the last of a dying breed. Just a good old leaf spring, no frills, off-roading reliable truck. I plan on keeping this truck for 20 years. I know for a fact this generation of Tacoma will last that long.
My first choice was a t.r.d pro but is not offered in long box. So army green l.b. with all the bells!! It was. I was lucky to get back in February
I have the 2021 and it is an absolute beast! I've brought it on a few back country camping trips and it handles everything with ease
I have a 2021 TRD Sport premium. I absolutely love it. I don't, however, recommend it to people. It's expensive. But can we talk about the elephant in the room? Can we talk about my dude Ryan and how he always looks into the cabin before he steps into a car like there's an IED inside? Lol...just kidding. Keep up the good work.
Thanks
Good review and that was awesome I want one in that color. The good thing about crawl control and MTS like you said mimics a front locker is that it won’t give you steering issues like a front locker would. You can’t turn as good with a front locker on, also no human can do what crawl control does by applying the brakes individually to each wheel and sending power. The LX600 is becoming a grocery getter now, it’s not off-road oriented even though it has crawl control, low ground clearance and poor approach and departure angles makes it soccer mom car now not an off-roader. The best off-road vehicles from Toyota are the Tacoma and 4Runner, I just wish they kept making the FJ cruiser and that would be a 3rd option.
It's worth mentioning the LX600 has a special trim with 18" wheels with more tire sidewall and some other changes. I think it's to make up for the lack of the LC in the US market now.
@@elkofcanada5003 yea I saw that one, most important change for off-road is the smaller wheels that’s it. Still has shitty approach angles which is its main problem but I guess you can fix it with an after market bumper. I just wish it came from factory with high clearance front and rear bumpers or offer it as an option
How would you compare these course conditions to when you took the Raptor 37 through it? The Tacoma made this look easy when the Raptor really struggled.
My dream Truck
If you don't care about breaking down on the road, or don't care about your truck not lasting or holding value, then buy anything else other than a Tacoma; that is where it really shines. All the little things that the other trucks have, you can buy aftermarket for the Tacoma. Yes Toyota sucks for not giving us more in the truck with the insane price tag, but the Truck lasts and is reliable.
what is more off road capable? this or forester wilderness?
Nice truck and nice review! Any plans on reviewing the 2022 Frontier Pro 4X?
I think the Frontier is better, until the Tacoma gets updated.
I have a Limited, that is all I could find in 2016. I still love it! Does anyone think it would be worth getting an aftermarket locker and lift since you cannot find a TRD PRO? No idea the cost.
2016- I paid $32,500.00 from Kendall Toyota in Bend Oregon, the only Toyota Dealer in the USA that gets all the Manuals!!!
Congrats on the extra property purchase!
Like your true review of how you need to be small to fit inside...seems each time I ever tried to climb in a Taco, only 6'0... I smacked my head getting in. On the OFF road portions, truly a no contest, but you have to get there. That price for basically a squashed old trend interior needs improvement, paying for discomfort as a daily driver...not worth it, and boy do you pay... Going to need to be a helluva redesign, and they must have something special coming. It is however, iconic, a Taco turns heads, regardless of the small person interior issues
Thank you for sharing a great review. Love the color. That back seat, when someone has a rear-facing child usually between 3 to 5 years of age, is likely not possible, unless the driver passenger seat is pushed forward, loosing that front passenger unless they are short. Forward facing children in booster seats would be fine. Thanks again. Keep safe!
Love the video, but how many ads does RUclips need to put on a 23 minute video? It's like they're forcing you to subscribe to their ad-less version.
If it wasn't for the world's most uncomfortable seating position, I would have ended up in a Tacoma instead of my ranger. Btw that color is awesome!
Seat Jackers help tremendously for the seating position. Also 4:88 gears and a ECU tune wakes this truck up.
Hey, you probably don’t still have the Tacoma trd pro, but the next time you are able to get your hands on a Tacoma, do you think you could fold the rear seats flat, and measure the height from them to the ceiling? I haven’t been able to find anything online
Best small truck in the world, nothing else even close.
Great demonstration and testing of MTS!!! More of this!!
Ryan, Around 22:22 you show us the LX 600 and explain its limitations under comparable conditions. It got me thinking,🤔 if only Toyota made a slightly less fancy version of the LX with more practical styling, better approach and departure angles, a full suite of locking differentials .... oh wait, they do. Maybe the same wild and crazy guys on the Toyota Board who just graciously bestowed the GR Corolla upon us will do the same with the GR Land Cruiser. We can always hope 🤩
That’s an interesting take on the LX. I bet they could do something like an SR5 version made for off-roading.
@@moloono1 There are limitless RUclips videos from around the world of various Land Cruiser models as they are equipped for different countries. The new Land Cruiser 300 Series is the model the new LX is based upon. In some markets you can get that new Land Cruiser with all the off-road gear I listed and the same old school 4.0 V6 currently sold in the 4Runner. The price is in the low $60,000 range. To be fair, the top spec GR Land Cruiser with the turbo V6 would cost as much as the LX 600. We will have to see how the new Sequoia copes with Ryan's course.
Awesome video! Now go back and do the same trail with your 4Runner again! In fact you should always use the 4runner as a side by side comparison in each video. Lol, don’t listen to me though, I’m just a 4runner owner who lives too far from the trails. I have an itch that needs to be scratched.
i like the taco
The trucks a lot faster if you press the “ETC” button. It holds the revs longer and makes a noticeable difference
The TRD pro looks so good!!!
What happened to your bed cleats?
I look at the newer tacomas, then back at my 98 tacoma. I cant seem to want a newer tacoma. But they do look clean.
I am so conflicted on trucks. I'm looking to buy a midsize truck anywhere from 2016 - 2022, price isn't really an issue for me. My problem is that I'm 6'6" and I want a truck that is well balanced with both on the highway and off road. I've been looking at Tacoma's due to their reliability but for highway driving I'm unsure. I'm also interested in the Jeep Gladiators (long term reliability is questionable) and Nissan Frontier. I work remote so no daily commutes. The truck would be used for typical home improvement uses, going to camp sites off the beaten path to remote / dispersed camping and lake sites hauling a kayak and fishing gear. But for the long road trips I need some comfort due to the travel from Kentucky to say New Mexico or Montana on adventures. Is there other Tacoma packages that is better suited for this over the TRD Pro? I don't plan to ever rock crawl/climb. Rather its forest roads, from easy to moderate. Nothing extreme since I do a lot of this solo.
love the Tacoma but lime green pass LOL!!
Good pick up.
I just bought a 2022 ranger tremor and it’s a taco killer I’m only here to compare
Any videos on the blue toyota?
I can't stop drooling over the new Corolla GR #makehothatchesgreatagain
it looks exciting
I'd love to see an off road test of that new Mazda CX-50!
Why do reviewers harp on the autonomous nonsense? I make my money by traveling and rent cars constantly. I've seen most of what's out there and man am I so happy when a car just lets me drive without blinking at me and shaking the seat whenever I'm in rush hour traffic, much less trying to override my driver inputs.
agreed the interior is tiny. It’s smaller than our current 2021 rav4’s interior. Different vehicles, I understand body on frame vs unibody. The great thing about the Tacoma’s is that they hold their value years down the road.
it's strange how big major manufactures designing their interiors looking like 80's scifi film, box tacked on box (infotainment with vents) while they can print out plastic and foam anything they want... i guess it takes more time and gets more expansive to make integrated design
the headroom of the tacoma is probably the main reason i switched for 4runner trd pro.
Suspension is 0.5” higher front and back for 2022 over 2021. Previously it was 1.0” higher only in front over the regular Tacomas. So 1.5” front and 0.5” rear increase is over the regular 2022 models. Ground clearance doesn’t change and is same on all Tacomas.
We are waiting on our 2022 to arrive. Hopefully another 2 months.
If you could get a trail edition for msrp and can put mods on your self that would be the way to go.
As long as you have 4x4 and 4lo plus a rear locker your set.
Just need some tires and suspension if you want that
My dealership didn't have a pro and other dealers had older year pros for the same price as the 22 off road limited. So, I bought new for msrp.
