Making modern furniture look OLD- APOTHECARY STYLE CABINET

- Well, I had so many different ideas for these two cabinets, but things didn't pan out quite the way I'd envisioned.. So I tried to make the best of it and changed up the plan!
I couldn't be happier with the end result, although I do still daydream about the different things I could have done with these two apothecary style cabinets. Matching night tables... two separate hall tables... so many possibilities. But I ended up combining the two into one long cabinet with a new pine top and base, and added industrial style wheels and some antiquing & distressing techniques to make it all look older than it is.
This is the link for the video I mention where I go into detail about the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig: • EASY 1 coat paint tech...

Twenty-six years ago (before you were probably born) I had my kitchen renovated and asked my contractor if he could distress a wooden island top. He was thrilled and went to town, whacking it with a chain, hammering various tools, etc. He did a great job, however, I thought the top still looked a bit too new and smooth between the various impressions, so I went outside and scooped a bucket of pea stone and gravel and threw it across the top. Then a laid a board on top and hammered the board, driving the stone slightly into the wood. Rolled the stone around and whacked it again. The end result was subtle and perfectly aged. Over the years, I've used my island for all sorts of projects and deliberately leave it unprotected to enhance its imperfections. And I still love it!
Good girl, very brave!
That’s very daring.
Haha I’m just seeing this now for some reason. How sweet are you!? I’m waaaay older than you think, but I’ll take the compliment haha (I’m in my 40s 😮)
That sounds like an amazing project :-)
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery40's?! No way! You're my new hero, no matter your age ❤
Just stunning! Your transformations are so thoughtful and considered (and stylish) that I feel a bit emotional when it’s a great reveal And Nacho made a wonderful cameo!
Ive been experiencing serious anxiety for the past few weeks and your videos have helped stave off several anxiety attacks. They are relaxing enough for me to calm down but not too relaxing that it doesnt hold my attention which would cause me to spiral mentally. Your videos are amazing
😢💜
She has an amazing calm, confident vibe. I just adore her.
Gelly I know too well about anxiety and debilitating panic attacks after 30 plus yrs🥵😵🤯, my heart goes out to U! 💕These videos help so much, keeping you focused! I call it a "Calgon Take Me Away" ( the old commercial) 🌼🍃🐞
Take some B Complex vitamins and Magnesium...also suggest watching Dr. Eric Berg. It's more likely a physical problem that affects the mental/mind
Same here. This channel is my go-to when I'm feeling overwhelmed. Love her work & soothing voice ❤
Glad that you turned those two pieces into a credenza. So much storage potential. Your artistic talent really transformed the originals. You made the transformation look so easy.
I love anything apothecary and let me just say, you did these tables justice. They were to modern and I was so happy to see you put then together and age it. Perfect. I love it, it's beautiful. You always knock it out of the park!
Thanks so much for watching!
Absolutely stunning! I love how one of the handles is dark as though that drawer was rarely opened. This piece feels like it has history!
That's exactly what I was going for! 😊 No way would every drawer be opened the same amount of times. Thanks so much for watching!
Gorgeous. Old furniture is so attractive because it has years of patina. You managed to add the patina with your creativity. Well done!
You really outdid yourself on this piece. You are so talented and you just keep getting better and better! Can’t wait to see what you do next.
I wouldn’t be able to let go of it if it was my project! I love apothecary cabinets and this one just sings! Amazing transformation of two marginal pieces!
I didn't, I kept this one! 😊Thanks so much for watching!
I did a feature wall in my store using deliberately mismatched pallet wood to try to simulate barn boards, and I made a stain for aging it by soaking old rusty nails in vinegar for 24 hours. Then you can just wipe the vinegar on the wood and it'll turn it a sort of dusty grey which looks very close to old, rough wood.
Yes! That trick works so well! I love that you can adjust the strength by simply how long it sits. That wall sounds amazing!
Steel wool works too if you don't have rusty nails....but when my mom put a Poly sealer over it (bathroom cabinets) it changed from the pretty gray to a nasty orange....so I gave her some of my trusty Odies Oil (thanks Angie) and that kept the gray tones
@@mimi2the4 Yeah, poly's anti-yellowing stuff tends to react with vinegar and makes it turn orange. At least from personal experience when I used it a few times.
I’ve seen videos on doing that, but haven’t had time to try…always have more than 1 project going. Your wall sounds cool…something I’ve been wanting to do in the kids treehouse.
@@mala3isity Yes, or the grey you see on old barns which have been out in the weather for a long time.
Really nice and very neat solution to a big pair of problem children!
Maybe run some sandpaper over the rolling surfaces of the wheels so they look like they've many miles/kilometers of use - or not 😁Great work on the metal pulls, they look like they have a a few generations of use.
As always, super job, Angie and your furry supervisor!
Thanks John!! ❤
Well the outcome wasn’t what I was expecting and I love it. I remember my mum painting 2 set of drawers for my sister and my bedroom in nearly the same way and in green. It was in the mid 60’s, yes I’m that old and bring back lots of good memories. Looking at this piece I do wish she had just stained the top and left it so you could see the natural grain.
Seriously, you rebuilt this piece of furniture! Dang girl, you have some wicked talent! You did a beautiful job.
Thank you so much for watching!
I’m waiting for the day you load a video of your own piece made from scratch! I know it’s coming! You are extremely talented and I’m sure the ideas are haunting your thoughts at night. Love the cabinet and appreciate you sharing with us! 🥰
Now that would be very interesting to see no pressure 😀
I love that all your projects seem to be different and play to the best use of the items you are working with. Great Job! Love it
You gave two souless pieces some amazing charm. Putting them together was brilliant.
Thank you very much!
Yes!! I agree!
I love faux finish. This is a great example of what you can achieve by playing with paints and stains and different tools. This is an excellent reimagining of the two cabinets. If I hadn’t watched you create this, I would think it was a cool old work cabinet. Really so much artistry here, Angie. I love it.🌸
Thank you so much!
Wow!!!! The fact that you can even look at something and imagine it like turning it into something else absolutely amazes me. You are so amazing and your work is so beautiful.
Thanks so much for your kind words! Much appreciated!
I like what you ended up with. Good job to you and Nacho. My little girl kitty always participates in any task I undertake. Especially those that do not require cat hair!😺
Wow, amazing. I know it's not what you envisioned to start, but it's EXACTLY what i'd pictured doing with them, lol. I love the way you can make a piece look aged without ever hitting that faux-cutesy "antique" look that is the failing of so many projects. I would honestly think this is a piece that had been in hard daily use for many years. Great job!
Angie, you are so thorough, it makes my heart sing!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
I LOVE this piece, it's so well done, it really does look vintage. I think you should definitely keep it.
Stunning! Your ability to see potential and go with the flow to create something new and beautiful is a part of each Sunday I look forward to! Thanks for sharing your work! 🪚💜
Very cool! Didn't see this coming. You are so creative!
You are not a furniture restorer, but a furniture creator. I have long ago stopped trying to copy your methods and just tremendously enjoy watching your artistic process. Great job! :)
Wow, thank you very much! 😊
Love this. Would be awesome for my sewing room.
Gorgeous! Those handles turned out great!
wow Angie you did it again. I love that chest of drawers but it is no surprise, everything you touch turns out a million bucks. But no wonder you have Nacho give you advice and as quality check.
Love little Nacho's thumbs! So cute!
As for the piece, well, you know I love it. Absolutely transformational.
Your projects always go in a direction I don't expect, and end up looking SO amazing. You're really a master of your craft, and it's wonderful to watch you work! So glad you started a channel!
Thanks so much for watching Rayna! I appreciate your kind words! 😊
LOVE THIS!! The contrast of the ambered pine and sage is beautiful. The pulls turned out so much better than they looked originally.
Thank you very much!
Lord when you started taking that one apart and the bottom broke and then you started dismantling the other one I was thinking "oh shes gone and done it now". "How's she ever gonna get them back together? Why did I doubt your abilities, silly me. You rebuilt and slapped them together put on a fresh coat of paint, jazzed up the pulls and added a new distressed top. And just like that two became one! You deserve a standing ovation for this one. I on the other hand will go stand in the corner for an hour for not having faith in your vision for that piece.
😂😂 I'll forgive you! 😉 I'm so glad you like how they turned out and you stuck with me to the end to see what I had planned.
What an amazing overhaul of these two pieces! Such a fantastic transformation from something that was really not all that attractive to a really stunning piece. Thank you for sharing!
I love this piece, it has character, it’s warm and comfortable looking and I would buy that any day if they sold it in stores. ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻
I sad I missed the live premier. I really like watching the artistic process for this piece! I like seeing your decisions unfold, and the process you go thru to make decisions. Beautiful job once again!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Lol! This is what I normally do, what you do is no where near what I like, but I love your videos and I learn a lot from you. I do like painted furniture, and I do paint furniture, but watching another RUclipsr paint over burgled walnut veneer that was in beautiful shape almost made me cry! I love that you just love the piece and want to save it, no matter what class it is. I love your personality, and the fact that you pass on info without being condescending. My daughter saw me watching one of your videos and was shocked that I was watching a mid century piece makeover. Lol! You are just special.
I love this piece, I did this exact color and stains combo on my kitchen cabinets 20 years ago, and I still love them!
Thank you so much for such an incredible comment! I really appreciate that! ❤️
"warm, amber glow" = Nacho! 😉
and all i can say is *wow* ! that turned out reallllly nice! i love that old typewriter you added to show it off. it goes great with the "old" look of it.
Thank you! Cheers!
Every video should have cute kitties playing. Gives me fuzzy feel good vibes 😻
Loved the furniture already, too
I love the idea of a “his and hers” pair of drawers, something that complements each other but have very clear different vibes. Such a fun concept, i’ve never seen it! I hope you get to try it on some pieces in the future.
As always, wonderful job on this piece. You took it somewhere completely different that what i’d imagined.
Thanks so much for watching!
Really liked what you did with these cabinets. Attaching them together makes all the difference to me in making them look like an old cabinet. I used to see these when I was a little girl, (70 years ago), in many stores. I love the old typewriter as well. I had my Grandfather's original Smith typewriter that he used his whole career as a secretary. In those days, secretaries were men as women didn't work at all. Congratulations on achieving your goal and thank you for bringing me some great memories!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm so glad I could bring back some fond memories for you. 🙂
I love the industrial look! This is a very functional piece of furniture!
Nacho is such a good helper. The cabinet looks amazing. I really love how the handles turned out and the finish on the painted portion adds nicely to the aged look. Great job Angie!
Thanks so much!
Not my cup of tea, but it's always fun watching you and how you do every piece with great care! Always a joy🙌
And omg, nachos paws😍. The cutest!!
I’m just never thought I was a fan of aged furniture, but I’d definitely buy this piece! It’s amazing!!
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching!
When I saw your initial post I immediately thought you should put them together. So glad you thought the same. Love it!
Great minds! Thanks for watching!
That is exactly what I had envisioned! I’m so glad you decided to make one piece out of them!! Turned out beautifully 🥰
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic result love the wheels takes it to a higher level.
Loved the end product! I especially loved it with that vintage typewriter sitting on it.
Nacho is so precious! Curious kitty - and that’s what makes them so lovable!
Thank you so much for watching!
That. Is. AMAZING!
Wow, it's fabulous. I think it's a much more interesting piece now than as two small cabinets. I love the colour, the top, the wheels but I mostly love how the handles turned out; they're my favourite part of the whole piece. Kitty/bunny breaks are always welcome too😸🐰.
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you like it!
I love this cabinet! I think the apothecary style drawers are a cool idea for a night stand, and putting 2 together makes a very interesting dresser.
This is a departure from what you normally do, and LOVE it!
I'm so glad! Thanks so much for watching!
No way is that controversial!
It’s fantastic I loved every bit of the aging you introduced so good!
Lil Nacho and his playful spirit omg so cute 🥹
Absolutely georgeous totally elevated from its humble beginning and one of a kind beautiful addition to any decor.
I really love this piece! It really works put together & I love the vintage look that it has. I think you should keep this piece. I'm sure it would make a statement in your home.
I'm seriously thinking about keeping it for my studio area where I do all my editing :-)
you transformed these pieces and they time traveled they took a walk down vintage lane love this so much
Thank you Holly!
Wow. My favorite is how beautiful that top came out.
I'm so excited that you ended up putting them together because I actually made a commented on a previous post that you should join them together. It looks great!
It’s so funny because it totally wasn’t my intention but clearly, this is what these two pieces wanted to become (and you knew it!) 😂❤️
Love the distressed look! We had new wooden bed furniture made and chose the distress finish. The furniture maker used metal chain to achieve the finish.
This is what I use to do as well. Got the biggest chain I could find & left it out in the backyard exposed to the elements so it would get nice & aged, then I’d go to town on my piece. 😁
Love this cabinet❤️
my very first premiere on yt with live chat - what a nice feature...the top turned out much more beautiful than it sounded. great result of this whole make over. Greetings from Germany
Thank you! The chats are usually pretty fun- there are usually some “regulars” which is neat because you kind of get to know people a bit, and it’s great when new folks join in. :-) welcome!
I laughed out loud when you said that looked like a flat boob because I was thinking the same thing. Ha ha! That turned out amazing
🫣😂❤️
You are such an amazing artist. Your vision for things always blows my mind. Great work!
Love love love this piece! ♥️ Fabulous job!
I really like the industrial vibe of this piece. Amazing what can be done with inexpensive furniture.
Thank you so much for watching!
❤❤❤❤, fantastic job, u should absolutely keep it..
Love it as all one piece! Well done as usual.
While I might have preferred brass or copper pulls, you totally transformed this piece, Angie! You have such a greta eye and talent for transformation. Good work, Lady!1
Thanks for watching!
Another winner. This one reminds of the work bench under my Dad's metal lathe. Colors are nearly identical. Thank you for the memory.
You're most welcome Sharon! Thanks so much for watching!
Gyönyörű, nagyon ügyes vagy mindent amit csinálsz csodálatos.
Whoa!! That was an adventure!! I love, love, love the end result!!😍❤️🐱(Hi, Nacho!!❤️)
I love this so much! I was hoping you would attach them to make one long piece, and was so excited when I realized you were doing just that. The result is absolute perfection!
Great minds think alike! 😉 Thanks so much for watching!
Omigosh Angie.....WOW...! ❤
I love your helper, nacho!
Once again your creativity shines! Love how this turned out, looks fantastic❣️
Thank you kindly!
Angie, I'm not crazy about the pine top with the dark finish. (I almost NEVER dislike anything you do! I think you are perfection personified! So... that's just my individual preference. Otherwise, I loved this). One other thing: You always begin the reveal with a close up and I find that I want to see the ENTIRE thing FIRST and then have you zoom in on the various details from different angles. I often feel that I haven't seen enough of the finished piece. You spend SO MUCH TIME on each piece, I want to revel in the finished masterpiece!
I second the request that for the reveal you begin with seeing the whole piece first and THEN go in for the closeups
Thanks for watching!
I think the drawers are meant to be together. To hand draw the design without tracing it first is phenomenal. Beautiful unique piece of furniture.
Thank you very much!
I gotta be honest I thought I wasn't gonna like this but I ended up LOVING IT. I'm always amazed by your taste and your skills.
It’s fantastic, there’s no way I would get rid of it!
When you transformed the top all I could think was you are an ARTIST. Love how it looks. I personally would like a more modern style for my home, but you did a beautiful job.
Thanks for watching!
Love how these two came together and Nacho is such a cutie 🥰
Thanks so much!
Love a bit of rusty metal. What an amazing transformation 😍
The best plan is no plan. Well done young lady. It is gorgeous. I would not want to selling either.
Those two separate pieces are ecstatic with their renovation, like twins separated at birth joyfully reunited. Stunning.
haha, I love that!
I listen to you while I work because you're voice is so soothing...a lot like Bob Ross. Thank you for amazing work, great information, and being such a wonderful stress reliever.
Wow, thank you!
This turned out soooo. Good. I love it. And that Everett color is quickly becoming one of my new favorites. I love how it turned out.
Thank you so much!
Loved seeing your "helper" Nacho! He's almost too cute!❤️
I love the way it turned out! Beautiful work!
Years ago when I had my furniture store, I had my husband build my check out counter out of 2x4's. I distressed that thing with anything I could find to hit it with. Chains, blades, hammer etc. Stained it and poly it and it looked amazing! I love that rustic distressed look!
Me too! Your counter sounds amazing! Thank you so much for watching!
Ooh, this is sooo my current jam for design. A little grungy, industrial, earthy. This turned out simply stunning, Angie!
Thank you so much 😊
So fun!! No one would know it doesn't have a long and interesting history. I love it!!
Thanks for watching!
The first thing I thought when I saw these 2 pieces was, put them together! Bear in mind that what I know about woodwork comes from this channel - very little experience, so imagine my surprise😃 It turned out beautiful - no surprise, and I love what you did to the hardware
Nacho, however stole the show!!❣️
🙏
He does tend to do that! Thanks so much for watching!
Very cool! Necessity is the mother of invention!
Love the piece... but LOVE LOVE LOVE the kitty toe beans!!!
❤️❤️❤️🐱❤️❤️❤️
Aren't they amazing?? 23 of them! Thanks so much for watching!
PS - LOVE the magnet stick to pick up all the nails, and NACHO is so cute 😁
Amazing as always!!!!
Love this piece!
I was SO Confused the entire time and genuinely mad when you started hitting the brand new pine and throwing a hammer at it, and in the end 😮 it’s the freaking apothecary table of my dreams. Stunning
hahahahha- I actually nearly spit out my soda laughing when I read this, haha. Thank you so much for posting this.
Love love love it!!! The only thing that I would add is an aged metal strip inlay down the front were you have joined them together.❤
Oooo! Love Nailah's idea!
Neat idea! Thanks so much for watching!
Love it! One of a kind!
I absolutely love what you did to these two pieces! I always like what you do! I don’t blame you for not wanting to sell it! I love how Nacho “helps” you!
He's a fantastic helper. 😉😺Thanks so much for watching!
Beautiful piece
So well done. Just wow. Love that color of green with the stained wood and black/antiqued hardware. Perfect!
Thank you! Cheers!
