  • Empress Lu was born during the late Qin Dynasty. When she was only 20, she married Liu Bang, the future Emperor of Han. After the marriage, Liu Bang joined the rebellion against the government. During this period, Empress Lu supported the family alone.
Later, Liu Bang defeated all the enemies and proclaimed himself the Emperor of China. Empress Lu became his empress. Since then, her life had completely changed.

Her husband was real trash too. He married a young girl half his age then fled and left her to die. Even though she took care of his family after she was released and her family helped him became the emperor he wanted to betray her and make someone else child the next king. No wonder she became ruthless after facing all the drama and too jealous to retain humanity. One might notice the other empresses that were famous for being ruthless. Guess the harem life was too hard for the weak and stupid to servive.

Her older years give a strong Cersei Lannister vibe, but then again, if we look at her journey to the throne, she has gone through some real difficulties.
One can point out that she was a very loyal wife who stood by the husband even when he made mistakes which got her in jail. She didn't take any rash decision when it came to choosing the crown prince, it was a fair game.
The incident where she disfigured the consort could've been something that triggered. Maybe she incited to replace the emperor with her son and the dowager got to know that. She would've been a cruel woman who took the punishment to a sadistic level. But we never know the truth cause throughout history women in power were always criticised.
During her reign in the Han Dynasty, the citizens lived a good life. So she wasn't all that bad. Just that she was ambitious, and the men in court were too occupied with women. Who's to blame?

I completely agree. Empress Lü did some great things but how she killed Lady Qi threw everything she did out the window. It’s true what they say people forget all your good deeds with one fault especially knowing how she killed lady Qi affected her son so badly cemented her in history. I personally think what she did to lady Qi was overkill. After the emperor died and Lü became empress dowager lady Qi no longer had any backing she should have left her alone but she just couldn’t stand that her son could take the throne one day and her beef was with lady Qi but also kill her son. I can’t with that it’s not his fault that the emperor saw lady Qi’s son as more competent for role of emperor.

What good would reputation do for her when she's ousted and killed? Qi was stupid to think she can walk all over the empress because she had the emperor's favour.
Besides, she was highly praised by historians throughout the history. Including Sima Qian, who wrote the first history book of China.
The royal family and historians have less issue with her doing the human pig, and more that she threatened the Liu's dynasty with nepotism.

All of Lu's political opponents would rally around Qi since her son could press his claim to the throne if the Emporer died - and so they'd hire assassins to see to that little detail. By killing not just the son but the mother too and by doing so in such a horrific manner, she pacified her opposition and showed that despite being a woman she wasn't soft-hearted. If it's a choice between brutally killing a few politicians or allowing millions of innocents to die in a civil war I know what I'd choose.
If there's anyone to blame in this situation, it's the father who's disloyalty created the whole situation; had he either not fathered a child with his concubine or made it clear to everyone from the start which child was to inherit the throne, the situation would've been a lot more stable. Instead he failed to establish his successor (which is a pretty big screw up for a leader) and disregarded the tension within his own household, leaving his very angry family members to resolve the issue after his death with no arbitration.

I love watching how ya'll make videos like this, and see how you guys ALWAYS forget to mention how the people you speak about their lives were constantly in danger not ONLY from external treat BUT from internal threats as well, including from their own clans and enemies clans! Being a member of the royal court in ancient times, especially in South Asia, was a life treating situation! You had to be constantly on guard not only against your own enemies, BUT from the Eunuchs, the maids, and even the guards that were supposed to protect you! Life in the Asian royal court compare to Europe was a battlefield! Either you play the manipulation game and help yourself to have some type of power to protect yourself, or you become someone else scapegoat! You are saying that she turned a concubine into a human pig, but you happily forget to tell, that concubine was also hurting the empress from behind the scene! Nobody in the royal court was a saint! Everyone one way or another other was either directly or indirectly involved in someone's being framed, jailed, and killed! Especially when concubines were involved! Competition among them to gain the Emperor's favor among them was fierce! It was not uncommon for concubines to kill other concubines! Or to even try to kill the current queen consort! What you seem to happily ignore is that many of these concubines are daughters from powerful clans, whose fathers were often part of the misters and officials! If their daughter got the chance to give birth to a royal child, their clan would be elevated to higher status! If they managed to give birth to a royal crown prince, their status become even higher! While the fathers, uncles, and other male family members of their clans were fighting among the government officials for recognition, the daughters of their clans were fighting to become the Emperor's new favorite and bore him a royal child! In the end, you can condemn the empress for her actions, but she was doing what she needed to survive! It was her or that concubine! And if the Empress didn't take action, it would have been her who the concubine ones she gained more power in the harem would have been 100% tortured! And let's not forget that concubine Qi also made a song that humiliates and makes fun of the Empress! She was constantly attacking the Empress! Even after concubine Qi lost power, she continues to scheme and plot against her! In the end, the concubine brought the Empress's anger onto her self! If she had left the Empress alone, and stopped trying to dethrone the current Crown prince and made her son the Crown prince, she wouldn't have died such a cruel death!

Besides, Wu’s legacy and life have been so exaggerated by men that no one truly knows that really happened. People disregard that historians of the Tang Dynasty have found evidence that during her reign it was prosperous and women were given many rights. Empress Wu just made the mistake of deciding to let future generations write about her achievements on her monument which she left blank. Of course, after she died, the nobles who Empress Wu knew she couldn’t trust, so she got citizens to advice her (her main advisor was a woman; that woman’s grave was destroyed by men right after she died) grossly exaggerated the things she did and tarnished her image.
