Horrible….absolutely horrible. Crimes against women are just horrific. Poor girl, she shorten her life and wish for her father’s health and happiness, just for him to turn around and did this to her. Sorry my ignorance, as I dont know the real story. Nor have I read about this in any history books, but ... judging only from what was said in this video, I got the impression that it was the princess who was the abuser at first. She looked down on her in-laws. She treated her husband very poorly because he wasn't handsome enough. She acted in improper ways, like drinking with eunuchs. It seems like she did everything she could to get that divorce, at the same time diminishing her husband's prestige and name. So when she had to return back to her husband, was it really shocking that she wasn't received with open arms, but made to suffer? She made the bed and she had to lie in it.

It's only "forcing into marriage" if you look at it through 21st century worl-view. In those times it was pretty common. Not only common, but constant. The marriage was decided between parents and matchmakers. The couple didn't have a say. And it was normal. THey grew up knowing that this will be how it went. Actually the video is not very accurate as it's loosely based on a drama series and novel, not what written in the original historical records. But even so, she was never an abuser, not in the drama series or in the historical books. The princess already conceded to marry Li Wei out of filial piety and agreed to bring prestige to her in-laws' family, just one thing she couldn't agree was sleeping with someone she didn't love and barely knew. So she suggesed Li Wei to find a concubine to bear children for him. But that was rejected and she was still forced to bear children against her will. In the drama (not recorded in history), they even tried to drug and rape her but failed, and that worsened her mental illness. The princess who could never leave the palace, was spoiled, had zero social and life skills, of course became depressed and made bad decisions when she was suddenly thrown into a forced marriage. She didn't hate Li Wei before the whole marriage thing, she hated him when he kept forcing himself on her even though she made it clear she didn't love him. Li Wei was ugly to her because she couldn't find him attractive appearance or personality-wise. Calling him ugly might have been offensive because she was spoiled but she only said that while confiding to her childhood friend and maternal mother, she never said that to Li Wei or abuse him in any ways. Historical records also describe Li Wei as someone dense and ugly even though Chinese historical accounts usually don't comment on the appearance of someone with little importance like Li Wei if he was just somewhat ugly or handsome. So Li Wei's appearance must have been quite distinctive to be remembered and noted by the author of the historical text. The Eunuch the princess was drinking with was her childhood friend and the only one who understood her loneliness in the palace and accepted her real personality, not the facade of a princess. They were soulmates. He was sold into the palace by his aunt due to his parents' death and poverty. At some point the two fell in love way before the marriage happened. But knowing they could never be together, they never confessed and just wished to accompany each other as a source of strength and consolation, not lovers. The mother-in-law often belittled the eunuch using derogatory words meant 'not man, not woman', which greatly upset the princess. Usually the princess and eunuch would only talk to each other during the day. In the drama, the night they were caught drinking together was after the rape incident when they princess was too scared to fall asleep so she went to find the Eunuch to talk. In the historical records, the in-law only caught them drinking and talking, nothing indecent. The princess found out she was being stalked and with her ongoing mental illness, her emotions went haywire so she fought with the in-law and ran back to the palace. There are a lot more about the story that the video misses out. Like how Li Wei was Fukang princess's uncle but she was forced to marry her uncle despite going against the norm at that time. How the princess was not only used as a repayment for the king's mother but also as a political pawn. How the in-laws were 'Nouveau riche' which conflicted with the old-money values and lifestyle the princess was brought up with. Etc. It's a historical tragedy. Everyone in this story made mistakes which could never be undone, but the ones who had to bear most of the consequences were the princess and then the eunuch, who was almost executed and lived a lonely life in longing for the princess until his death shortly after the princess passed away. The in-laws recovered their prestige soon after being slightly punished for abusing the princess to death. It tells a lot about the fate of women and how people viewed eunuchs at that time. Contrast to what popular media portray eunuchs nowadays, realistically most eunuchs had a very unfortunate childhood and those who were not power hungry or evil had a very isolated and sad life. Princess Fukang and her eunuch were just the victims of their times.
This is a good example of two wrong does not make a right. If it wasnt this marriage, it would have been some other. But either way, she would not have had a say in it. It's quite different/difficult w other tradition why china and the Chinese culture sometimes misunderstood For China, the media had turned it into a boogey man, with a narrative associated with it. Reading about China through the media is like looking at an evil looking shadow that does not resembles the object. A imagery to help illustrate the point is like Sam from Lord of the Rings able to scare an orc with his shadow while he possess the ring. As for Chinese culture, is a combination of lack of effort and the human shortcut of lumping similar looking people together. There are certain stereotypes associated with East Asian pheonotypes that aren’t true for the whole set. But these get repeated over and over so people just assume it’s true. Those that actually put effort would see through it but there aren’t any incentive until recently that would promote active learning. To be fair, Chinese cultures, while share some core characteristics, could be practice very differently. It’s like trying to lump all birds together into a category. There are many shared traits but is udderly useless when going into details such as what they eat, how do they behave, etc. Also, unlike birds with different species, Chinese people do mixed, so you get even more jumble of traits that can’t be neatly categorized. As such, it’s hard to talk about Chinese culture without a lot of asterisks. Which is why Chinese culture and China is so misunderstood.

If you drop by someone’s house in China, it’s not an imposition and they will do everything they can to make you welcome. In Toronto, you may be seen as very impolite and you have probably interfered with the person’s plans for the day. You wait to be invited. Understanding culture, whether it’s in Beijing or Toronto, means understanding the norms everyone was brought up with. “Culture shock” is a very real phenomenon where you go someplace else and find things are completely different.

Nobody during those times were married by love. People learn to tolerate each other and build a partnership of sorts through these arranged marriages. Only few lucky ones blossomed into love years after being married. The princess brought her suffering upon herself because she’s so spoilt she disrespected the other family badly. Hitting the mother-in-law was a terrible offence and she was caught red handed by Li himself. Women during those days depended heavily on the man of the household so she effectively severed any chances of being remotely on the good side with Li. The mother-in-law wanted to marry the princess into their house for status. The king used Fukang to repay his mother. Fukang was brought up as a spoiled princess confined in a palace with no one teaching her any life skills at all. She made many wrong choices but she was also a victim. She had zero freedom when it came to important life choices like her studies, career, marriage and children. She got fed, dressed up, raised and treated like a present to Li Wei's family. Imagine yourself living like that, would you be happy? Chinese historians often relate to stories like this to condemn how detrimental forced marriages were to women at that time. Just because it was the norm doesn't make it okay and acceptable. Fukang princess herself realized how women were treated below men at a young age and asked why it was okay for men to expose their arms but not women. She was someone too advanced for her era so she couldn't fit in. Also, she hit her mother-in-law because she couldn't control herself anymore due to her mental illness after tolerating her in-law's abusive behaviors and stalking for years. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. There are much more to the story that the video ommitted. I read the novel, watched the drama and read the historical records about princess Fukang. She made bad choices but Li Wei was far from being a decent husband and her mother-in-law was definitely abusive.

this is mainly taken from the drama remake for TV show. the real story from the history record, she was neglected and abused because they didnt give her proper clothes and foods and let lived alone without any servants. It's pretty hard esp when she was a princess since birth and every thing was taken care by servants. she never told her husband he was ugly at his face, it was to her mother iirc. after her death, the eunuch wanted to see her but she was already buried. idk how long she was neglected after remarried her husband, but her death was 8 years after shes separated from the eunuch.
This video leaves out a lot of relevant facts. She managed to exile her husband twice! So is it a wonder that he wasn't so keen on her when she did everything to harm him? This is so inspiring. Even back then when women had no rights the human spirit cannot be contained by rules of the land. if touching someone made your skin crawl it just did. Some free soul people no matter the consequences cannot suppress this reflex.
I don’t care about the status of a person but when it comes to treatment of others, love and respect should come first! Song dynasty is in several C-drama's, although partly fiction of the history, it still is educational. The most recent in Song dynasty are: Palace of Devotion (2021), [the Legend of Xiao Chuo (2020) is about Liao dynasty, enemy of Song, and looks differently at some historical events], and Serenade of Peaceful Joy, 2020 (a.k.a. Held in the Lonely Castle).
During those ancient dynasties there were always arranged marriage . Most often the boy and the girl has not even meet . Mostly the victims here are members of royal and noble families . It’s marriage to return favour or convenience . No love at all . It’s just lucky once married both respect each other but if not then the worst happens .
In return, they treated the princess terribly until she died. No food, no servants, no medical care, no love, no respect, etc. She may have acted a little spoiled in the beginning but she’s a princess!! She’s coping the best she can with a forced marriage by being with the people she’s most comfortable with, her servants and eunuch. The process of the love story between leads are of course fiction, or based on rumors, legends, novels. Or the historical leads have a love story with a fictitious character. Often side figures or even main figures did not exist in history. Real concubines were often anonymous in history. They are registered without name. Some plot twists are only possible when fantasy elements are used, like timetraveling or transmigrations etc. Or, changing names, periods, dates, kingdoms and using open endings to be interpreted by the viewers. Or the ending is not filmed but told by a storyteller, or cleverly filmed in a short last scene. E.g. Stand by Me (short last scene) , Princess of LanLing Wang (voice, alternative ending (not available on YT) . There is censorship in China, what is allowed and what not. Rules also change. This seems to be different for television drama, films or internet dramas. Sometimes a C-drama of the past suddenly is "canceled" in China. I read that happened to The Story of Yanxi Palace. I do not know what is true in this canceling. If you compare The Story of Yanxi Palace to Ruyi's Royal Love, and other older C-drama with the same historical figures Quenlong Emperor, Step-empress and Ling, you can get what are the historical facts, historical "rumors" and what is fiction. How they used century old "rumors" very creatively in their drama. The same goes for Empresses in the Palace. The prequel to Ruyi's Royal love.
First of all if you want to pay back somebody do it yourself not by making another person pay for you. So this marriage idea is absolutely absurd. Secondly, when two people who are getting married don't Even like each other and forcing them to marry is a sin of spoiling two lives. There are a hundred ways in which the Chinese can acknowledge or humiliate you, and it all boils down to small details like who sits where, when do you get to speak, what sort of dishes are served… if you can read that code, you know your place with them. Food is China’s unofficial religion. You will be asked “have you eaten?” in the same way you will be asked “how are you doing?” in the anglosphere, and they mean it. Never downplay the importance of a meal. They dedicate an amazing amount of time, resources, and energy to making, eating, and procuring meals. Negotiation; the Chinese will offer you a choice even when it is clear what you want. It’s one of the prime directives of China. The other person must always have a choice. That way, you may find yourself playing cat and mouse with other pedestrians many more times than you would in the western world, because one indication of intended direction just isn’t enough; no, you will have to swerve around fellow pedestrians in the last moment, because they will keep offering you options till the last second. On the whole, I like Chinese culture. When you are there, you feel a new mellowness, surrounded by abundance and the dynamics of an old culture that is mercifully pragmatic and philosophical. Also speaking without knowledge/experience about the topic is considered irresponsible and stupid in Chinese culture. That's why free speech is always laughable topic for most of Chinese. Only the fools speak more than others!
We are living now in a very fortunate period concerning womens rights. In the time period of this princess this kind of treatment seemed unfortunately common. We are lucky to live now.
Yes, in some countries women's rights are a fact, I say : in some !!! But on the contrary, and it is unfortunately a harsh reality, in many many countries of the world, today, they are denied the mere basic rights that they should be, as women, entitled to : Check : young girls. sold as slaves, married against their will, under patriarchate's rules similar to those of the Middle Ages, obscurantism , women abducted, or sold by their own fathers, so poor that they are reduced to sell their daughters : too many mouths to feed ! Girls who have to undergo FGM, (even in Europe ...) Women kept inside houses, never to see the light of day, slaves to their in-laws, punished or even burned for some silly little mistake, women raped, women obliged to hide themselves in cloaks. from head to toes, denied access to education, schools, medical care, etc etc I could go on and on .. I stop here. I live in Europe too, but I know for a fact that women are trafficked in Europe , sold like cattle, exploited, now . Nor have I read about this in any history books, but ... judging only from what was said in this video, I got the impression that it was the princess who was the abuser at first. She looked down on her in-laws. She treated her husband very poorly because he wasn't handsome enough. She acted in improper ways, like drinking with eunuchs.

Actually the video is not very accurate as it's loosely based on a drama series and novel, not what written in the original historical records. But even so, she was never an abuser, not in the drama series or in the historical books.
The princess already conceded to marry Li Wei out of filial piety and agreed to bring prestige to her in-laws' family, just one thing she couldn't agree was sleeping with someone she didn't love and barely knew. So she suggesed Li Wei to find a concubine to bear children for him. But that was rejected and she was still forced to bear children against her will. In the drama (not recorded in history), they even tried to drug and rape her but failed, and that worsened her mental illness.
The princess who could never leave the palace, was spoiled, had zero social and life skills, of course became depressed and made bad decisions when she was suddenly thrown into a forced marriage. She didn't hate Li Wei before the whole marriage thing, she hated him when he kept forcing himself on her even though she made it clear she didn't love him.
Li Wei was ugly to her because she couldn't find him attractive appearance or personality-wise. Calling him ugly might have been offensive because she was spoiled but she only said that while confiding to her childhood friend and maternal mother, she never said that to Li Wei or abuse him in any ways. Historical records also describe Li Wei as someone dense and ugly even though Chinese historical accounts usually don't comment on the appearance of someone with little importance like Li Wei if he was just somewhat ugly or handsome. So Li Wei's appearance must have been quite distinctive to be remembered and noted by the author of the historical text.
The Eunuch the princess was drinking with was her childhood friend and the only one who understood her loneliness in the palace and accepted her real personality, not the facade of a princess. They were soulmates. He was sold into the palace by his aunt due to his parents' death and poverty. At some point the two fell in love way before the marriage happened. But knowing they could never be together, they never confessed and just wished to accompany each other as a source of strength and consolation, not lovers. The mother-in-law often belittled the eunuch using derogatory words meant 'not man, not woman', which greatly upset the princess.
Usually the princess and eunuch would only talk to each other during the day. In the drama, the night they were caught drinking together was after the rape incident when they princess was too scared to fall asleep so she went to find the Eunuch to talk. In the historical records, the in-law only caught them drinking and talking, nothing indecent. The princess found out she was being stalked and with her ongoing mental illness, her emotions went haywire so she fought with the in-law and ran back to the palace.
There are a lot more about the story that the video misses out. Like how Li Wei was Fukang princess's uncle but she was forced to marry her uncle despite going against the norm at that time. How the princess was not only used as a repayment for the king's mother but also as a political pawn. How the in-laws were 'Nouveau riche' which conflicted with the old-money values and lifestyle the princess was brought up with. Etc.
It's a historical tragedy. Everyone in this story made mistakes which could never be undone, but the ones who had to bear most of the consequences were the princess and then the eunuch, who was almost executed and lived a lonely life in longing for the princess until his death shortly after the princess passed away. The in-laws recovered their prestige soon after being slightly punished for abusing the princess to death.
It tells a lot about the fate of women and how people viewed eunuchs at that time. Contrast to what popular media portray eunuchs nowadays, realistically most eunuchs had a very unfortunate childhood and those who were not power hungry or evil had a very isolated and sad life. Princess Fukang and her eunuch were just the victims of their times.

By trying to repay his birth mother of the sacrifices and injustice she went through, the emperor now sacrifices the life and happiness of his favorite daughter. Women were always the blunt of these injustice and have no control over their fate.

For China, the media had turned it into a boogey man, with a narrative associated with it. Reading about China through the media is like looking at an evil looking shadow that does not resembles the object. A imagery to help illustrate the point is like Sam from Lord of the Rings able to scare an orc with his shadow while he possess the ring.
As for Chinese culture, is a combination of lack of effort and the human shortcut of lumping similar looking people together. There are certain stereotypes associated with East Asian pheonotypes that aren’t true for the whole set. But these get repeated over and over so people just assume it’s true. Those that actually put effort would see through it but there aren’t any incentive until recently that would promote active learning.
To be fair, Chinese cultures, while share some core characteristics, could be practice very differently. It’s like trying to lump all birds together into a category. There are many shared traits but is udderly useless when going into details such as what they eat, how do they behave, etc. Also, unlike birds with different species, Chinese people do mixed, so you get even more jumble of traits that can’t be neatly categorized. As such, it’s hard to talk about Chinese culture without a lot of asterisks.

If you drop by someone’s house in China, it’s not an imposition and they will do everything they can to make you welcome. In Toronto, you may be seen as very impolite and you have probably interfered with the person’s plans for the day. You wait to be invited.

this is mainly taken from the drama remake for TV show. the real story from the history record, she was neglected and abused because they didnt give her proper clothes and foods and let lived alone without any servants. The process of the love story between leads are of course fiction, or based on rumors, legends, novels. Or the historical leads have a love story with a fictitious character. Often side figures or even main figures did not exist in history. Real concubines were often anonymous in history. They are registered without name. Some plot twists are only possible when fantasy elements are used, like timetraveling or transmigrations etc. Or, changing names, periods, dates, kingdoms and using open endings to be interpreted by the viewers. Or the ending is not filmed but told by a storyteller, or cleverly filmed in a short last scene. E.g. Stand by Me (short last scene) , Princess of LanLing Wang (voice, alternative ending (not available on YT) . There is censorship in China, what is allowed and what not. Rules also change. If you compare The Story of Yanxi Palace to Ruyi's Royal Love, and other older C-drama with the same historical figures Quenlong Emperor, Step-empress and Ling, you can get what are the historical facts, historical "rumors" and what is fiction. How they used century old "rumors" very creatively in their drama. The same goes for Empresses in the Palace. The prequel to Ruyi's Royal love.

Never downplay the importance of a meal. They dedicate an amazing amount of time, resources, and energy to making, eating, and procuring meals.
Negotiation; the Chinese will offer you a choice even when it is clear what you want. It’s one of the prime directives of China. The other person must always have a choice. That way, you may find yourself playing cat and mouse with other pedestrians many more times than you would in the western world, because one indication of intended direction just isn’t enough; no, you will have to swerve around fellow pedestrians in the last moment, because they will keep offering you options till the last second.
On the whole, I like Chinese culture. When you are there, you feel a new mellowness, surrounded by abundance and the dynamics of an old culture that is mercifully pragmatic and philosophical.
Also speaking without knowledge/experience about the topic is considered irresponsible and stupid in Chinese culture. That's why free speech is always laughable topic for most of Chinese.

Things went wayward because of the emperor's decision to let them marry and still let the princess return to her husband despite the grievances she claimed. The queen's decision to remind the king that it was the king's payment of her late mother that's why he couldn't take it back sounded like she was thinking about the face of the king and the good of the people but nope. That queen consort whatever was clearly putting that princess into her deathbed (probably because she didn't like that princess being favored by the emperor so much. She's not her daughter after all but a daughter from another concubine). The king's harem is always what we call the deep troubled waters full of poisonous snakes.
Anyway, that emperor was soooo wrong in his decision. He may have good intentions but intentions are merely intentions. If the people tasked to relay these intentions doesn't have the will nor the power to execute this, such intentions will only lead to the lives of those bearing it in great peril or disaster.
