she fell on her bar routine in the team/qualifying optionals- both hands and knees touched the mat on her double back dismount- a 0.4 deduction... scores carried over back then- your aa final and free exercise scores were added to your qualifying. she was in a hole entering the AA finals- she nearly made it back.
Ekatarina Szabo wil always be one of my favorites. I was 18 years old at that time and i was a supetfan of her. In my opinion she was robbed of the gold for the all round title. 😢 She hold her cool when the lights goes out at the time when she wil start her floor challenge.
The booing was definitely nationalism but her full-in at the end was short of rotation. She had to step forward and dance out of it because she didn’t really have control of the landing. Points for terrific difficulty but in my opinion there was a reason not to give her a 10 on that routine

I mean, are we not going to talk about how Kati’s last pass was really under rotated? Incredibly difficult to finish with a full-in and I love me some Kati but that was an obvious execution error that should have prevented her from getting a 10. Julianne’s tumbling was easier but everything was landed cleanly. Very curious scoring. I think they gave her the 10 because doing a full-in for the last pass was maniacal back then. Incredible difficulty

The competition was wonderful but for me, although my allegiance is to the USA, the Rumanians, especially Szabo and Pauca, were in a different league. But it was thrilling to see Kathy Johnson get a medal. Only with the advent of Shannon Miller, my all time favourite gymnast, did I think that the Americans really had arrived. And now they are clearly, by far, the very best in the world!

Think a little before commenting. Ecaterina Szabo scored a 10 because it was a spectacularly orchestrated routine. The full end was still being perfected in the 80s. Hence, the less than impeccable landing. However, it doesn't take away from her vibrant presentation and high difficulty. Besides, Julianne McNamara scored a 10 before her with her uninspired "prancing" and a double twist at the end. Now that was a ridiculous, undeserving 10!

Not everyone could do a full-in but the ones who did weren’t struggling to land them. Case in point: look at the full-in Kati did at the beginning. Gorgeous! Phenomenal height and execution. The one she did at the end definitely was short of rotation. It’s obvious. I get why Julianne got a 10 even though her routine was easier. There weren’t any clear deductions. Kati’s routine was superior in every way and she should have won but she definitely got away with a less than stellar final landing because she threw such a difficult trick at the end. I don’t think either routine deserved a 10. I would have been fine with both getting a 9.95.
Gael Garcia Bernal 10 means perfection. Her routine was NOT perfect (no matter how entertaining it was). And saying people were still perfecting a move and that is why she deserved a 10 is one of the dumbest comments I have read. And FYI, McNamara should not have gotten a perfect 10 either. The landing on her second pass she clearly didn’t have complete control. Neither deserved 10’s. This is the era of judges giving away 10’s like if they were candy. 🤦♂️🤦♂️

Plus she was a far better gymnast than Julianne McNamara and in a different league all together from the Mary Lou Retton.
Yeah. Great tumbling but not perfect. Julianne had more grace, but Szabo was rewarded for that tumbling.

Szabo was kinda sloppy. There's no comparison between Szabo and Mary Lou Retton. This was not a 10! She lunged forward as if she almost tripped.
