You can really see the changes in gymnastics over the years. Back then, the aesthetic elements were dominant and the gymnasts were often so beautiful to watch. Now, it's mostly power. Both are great things but you can see from this that it is more enjoyable to see..
I wonder if we have lost something in artistry when you compare floor exercises now in gymnastics. This felt like a complete dance of gymnastic moves whereas today it is gymnastics moves pieced together that never look like a dance?
We lost everything of artistry ,musicilaty and ballet beautifull lines and movement..everything os so boring now and women athletes are luke body builders.nothing of beauty.
Eu acho que as ginastas romenas dessa época eram as mais completas, lindas e perfeitas de todos os tempos. Passo horas assistindo Daniela Silivas, Nádia, Ecaterina, Gina, etc. quando o comunismo acabou as ginastas foram para os Estados Unidos e os técnicos também. Até hoje a Romênia não conseguiu o mesmo desempenho, se bem que devagar está melhorando. A ginástica hoje não tem graciosidade, é muito mais força e pulos altos. Um viva a essas romenas inesquecíveis!
Ha sido de las grandes proezas del sistema: desarrollarse en todas las áreas y socializar a quien reunían condiciones. El dinero no debería ser un problema para eso pero como el capitalismo varía siempre la ecuación se perdió esa grandeza. De hecho, aún con todos esos emigrados USA no ha mejorado la performance y llegar minimamente a los logros del bloque.
From the way the commentator mentioned the music and routine, this was the elite Compulsory; every gymnast did the same planned moves. It ended after 1996. The optionals was where each gymnast did their own routine.
@@MrMartinportnoy yeah figure skating had a similar format where skaters had to do figure 8s multiple times and not stray from the lines. I think they got rid of them because it was boring watching the same things over and over. Just my guess.

Le niveau de difficulté d'aujourd'hui necessite forcément une musculature puissance un peu au détriment de la grâce. Mais c'est ça le progrès, la gymnastique artistique n'est pas de la danse classique. A chaque discipline son gabarit.

It was indeed the compulsory round... its elimination from the competitive programme caused a great deal of controversy.
