I am not even halfway through this footage and I cannot even walk down the street as good as these women. Well done young ladies!!! The future is yours.....
Wow Romanians were so perfect as well as the Russians. Beauty, strength, artistry perfectionist display. I love how beautifully done back then. Now days it's not as graceful.
Back the Olympic coverage was lousy with everything on one channel, boring stories, and all on tape delay. I was so happy eight years later when NBC offered the for a fee, the Triplecast. Events were live with no commercials and you saw the entire event as if you had bought a ticket and were there. This is why I have such great memories of the 1992 Olympics. My favorite one of all time. On more nations boycott with everyone there and the dayview of the Dream Team.
Szabo’s only bobble was on her dismount (a tad over-rotated, falling backward a bit . . . Well, maybe falling backward by an over-zealous initial salute), disguised well by the quick pivot to salute the judges. Pauca’s routine was awesome as well. Johnson’s was very well done, very clean, but not as technically difficult, obviously.
@@annapavfan4680 That's exactly what happened. Rhetton didn't beat the Romanians & sure as hell couldn't have beat the Russians if they hadn't boycotted. She didn't have the difficulty & hopped on her alleged 10's. You obviously know nothing about gymnastics.
@@gymnast2890 Excuse me! I'm extremely sorry for that comment. Glad you replied to that, because that was my sister who said that using my account. Zsabo should have definitely won that AA. She was so underscored on floor and on beam. Retton had a hop on her vault! How's that a 10?? She was so favored in a home town boycotted games. She got lucky the Soviets weren't there. Again, sorry for that disrespectful comment my sister made. Deleted it now.
@@annapavfan4680 Well, I'm sorry for going off :( sensitive comment for me .....because my cousin won in 2014 & she won in Athens with the difficulty & hit her routines. I decline to comment on Kathy Johnson as a former teammate because I know I'm biased, but the 84 Olympics were just so blatantly scored in favor of one particular gymnast.
Yep! l agree with the judges here! l remember watching this in '84. lt just keeps getting better every year! The only change l don't like is the bars. They are a completely new apparatus now! l liked the way they were in the 80's! The only person that l like watching on the ''new'' bars is Nastia Lukin! They were more feminine back then, and l thought the aesthetic was way more pleasing! Well .....that's my rant, and l'm stickin' to it!
More “feminine?” So you have a problem with the young women of today actually looking athletic and strong? Very short sighted, chauvinistic thinking on your part.
The high scores for the Americans were so absurd, you had to laugh, not to cry! Even the Soviets @ the Moscow 1980 Olympics didn't have the audacity and shame to be so corrupt. Gymnasts like Natalia Shaposhnikova, Maria Filatova and Elena Naimushina scored 9.7s and 9.8s for solid, stellar routines. Filatova was given a low 9.8 for a ravishing floor compulsory that automatically took her out of the running for the final. Shaposhnikova led, with Nadia, after compulsories and was hammered with 9.8s during optionals. Then you have Mary Lou Retton, Julianne McNamara and Kathy Johnson perform underwhelming routines...and because they didn't take a step on their landing (!?), they get 9.85s in beam compulsories (and the crowd boos, demanding 10s !!??). All 3 lacked amplitude, refinement and good form!!! Julianne McNamara getting 10s on floor!? Mary Lou Retton getting 9.8s on balance beam routines that Olga Korbut probably did in the 1960s!!! What the US did at these Olympics was deplorable.
Clearly, you are the stupidest person who comments on these videos -every single one of your comment is anti-American. Yeah, you come from the shit hole of the world Mexico
What the SOVIETS did was deplorable, usurping COUNTLESS medals from far more deserving athletes- including their own when they decided someone they liked better should get it. The USA performed very well with clean routines. Romania won a couple of GOLD medal with disgustingly simple beam routines in the 1990’s, but you aren’t complaining about that! Stuff your bigotry where the sun never shines.
There is no comparison. Kathy Johnson had a very safe and boring routine with a bobble. She did not even do any jumps. The two Romanian girls were in leagues of their own.
Romanian gymnasts - in a league of their own. On this occasion, unfortunately, the American gymnasts' scores benefitted from home-turf advantage. The lady commentator should have acknowledged Kathy' routine for what it was: good but at times wobbly. Shouldn't have been awarded a 9.85. It wasn't that good at all.
She stated in an IG interview that prior to this routine she had suffered a mental block to the extent that she almost didn't compete. And she added that Ludmilla Tourischeva (one of the judges) looked at her as if saying like "you'll regret it all your life if you don't compete", and that motivated her to go on with the routine. Also, she was 25 years old, and this was her last competitive routine....
@@MrMartinportnoyThe Soviets had a lot of respect for Kathy because of the way she performed floor with her ballet background. There was a meet in Moscow? where the crowd boo’d an underscored floor routine because they were favoring Nadia who had a less technically difficult routine. They boo’d her 9.75 up to a 9.90!
No, she got it by performing a cleanly executed routine. That was the most critical thing you could do back then. They didn’t look as closely at form as they do now, and she fulfilled all the requirements of that era. Get over yourself.
No offense, but the American gymnasts blatantly reaped the benefits of the home field advantage. Kathy Johnson's was solid but lacked intricacy, amplitude and good form in key elements. That 9.85 should've been a 9.70 at best. Ecaterina Szabo and Simona Pauca were exceptional. The tumbling series, complexity and flow warranted the high scores. 9.95 for both in my book.
Not just that. With the boycott, many of the gymnastics judges/officials from the Soviet/Eastern European bloc countries did not participate, and the void was filled with judges from smaller federations with less experience judging.
The Eastern Bloc sent judges to LA, just not athletes. Yuri Titiov, URS - President of the FIG was there and Ellen Berger GDR was on the technical committee - she wanted to penalized Mary Lou Retton in the all-around for Bela Karolyi, her coach, coming over the partition onto the competition floor - he wasn't one of the US coaches.
Not true, the head judges from Soviet bloc where there, and they did try to influence the scores. I believe there was a head judge from ROM also that messed with the US scores there
Disagree. Kathy Johnson had a beautiful routine with a lot more originality and polish than both Romanians. Pauca had some form breaks on her feet and yes she had great acrobatics, but her overall presentation was weak, and Szabo was slightly better than Pauca overall, but benefitted from very generous judging in all of the Event finals, where she deserved silver in all of them. McNamara and Retton were robbed of gold in EF and Pauca deserved a 9.95 in EF. Szabo should have left LA with only one gold and four silver medals
Wasn't it Berger's husband who reported a technical violation by the US women during the Team Competition in Seoul that cost them 0.5 pts, which cost them the bronze?
@@irondasgr true? Lol not hardly. Like I said, your opinion is meaningless to the world at large.
