    In terms of lines and hit handstands Marcia Fredericks was like 40 years ahead of her time, incredible.

    Szabo had one of the biggest and best R/O dbl tucks. She got so much height out of the block. Yes, I know the cowboying is bad, but it's so big and easy. Even in 87 when she was a little out of condition, it still popped up into the air like she's on the moon.

    • @wallyaloud
      @wallyaloud 2 года назад

      A little out of condition? Bless her heart that year, especially considering she didn't have the best aesthetic look to begin with.

    • @matthewhines9787
      @matthewhines9787 2 года назад

      @@wallyaloud Now see, I loved her aesthetics. The body isolation and flexibility in the hips and back really made for some pleasing moments. When I think of her dance, fluidity is the word that most comes to mind.
      And let's be clear "out of condition here" means she was a size 4 and weighed 94 lbs.

      @@matthewhines9787 I'm sure she was average compared to a non-World class gymnast, but she was pretty out of shape to the point that I wonder if someone was injured and she got the call 2 weeks before the meet or something. And I don't think it was a growth or puberty thing as she was already what? 16 or 17 in LA. It was definitely a lack of training thing.

    • @matthewhines9787

      @@wallyaloud Girl, she was still thinner than Shuchunova. She was also still doing world class skills, not everything she did in LA, but she was competitive. She also learned new skills in that time.
      I'm not saying she wasn't on the decline, but she also placed second behind Silivas at that year's nationals.
      As for the age and puberty thing, we know the girls were trained so hard it stunted their growth and menstruation. We also know for sure that Romania was not opposed to lying about ages...and once even lying about who Cati Szabo's identity in a competition. So I personally don't feel comfortable saying for sure what age or stage in development she competed.
      Finally, even if she came home discouraged by her losing to MLR and didn't train as intensely as before LA, she was still in great shape. You make it sound like she was some cow who tripped and fell into a ugly leotard and landed in a seat on a plane from Romania to Rotterdam.
      You simply cannot do the gymnastics she was doing in 87 without being fit and having trained.

      @@matthewhines9787 I really don't think she was smaller than Shushunova. I don't know if you're being hyperbolic, but there wasn't a modicum of cellulite or fat on Elena. That was just her body type and how she always looked post-puberty. Before I even knew that Elena didn't have what was considered to be an ideal body type for gymnastics (to the point that she likely suffered from body dysmorphia over it), I never thought she was overweight or could stand to up her fitness. I really cannot say the same about Szabo circa 87, unfortunately. That is crazy to me if you actually think Szabo at 87 Worlds was in better condition and shape than Shushunova.

    'Little Miss Runner up'???? She won 4 gold medals at 84 Olympics. If she didn't crash on her Bars landing in team event- she would have won the AA.

      Exactly She won 8 gold medals at the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships. Definitely not runner up. Over many years. Mary Lou has no World Championship, World Cup, or even Pan American Championship- She performed great at one home Olympics with the Soviets and East German gymnasts boycotting.

    Granted it was difficult to see Gabrielle's routine due to the tracking issues, but I would have Kersten > Fahnrich. Maybe bc of this result, Dagmar had extra marks carry over to her routines at the Olympics because her bars scores in Seoul were 🤯🤡. And ugh, it's so frustrating they chacked Ricna and showed Szabo's sloppybars instead 🤮.

    Cathy Rigby was the worst commentator! A toe front half and a Comaneči dismount are too diff skills lady. The twist comes at diff times! And it's not subjective judging on a 9.875 when there was a slight wobble and then a hop back on the dismount 😮

      (From Wikipedia) In 2005 and 2006 , Gabriele Fähnrich gave several interviews to German newspapers in which she told about her unhappy times in gymnastics and her many problems with the East German coaches.
      The problems started in 1983, when Fähnrich was competing in Japan at the Chunichi Cup meet. During the competition, she wanted to make some photos, but had problems with her camera. A West-German gymnast, Brigitta Lehmann, who was also competing at this meet, saw that she had problems and went to her and offered her help, which Fähnrich accepted. This incident only happened a few minutes, but caused big problems for Fähnrich, because it was strictly forbidden for East Germans athletes to talk to West-Germans. After this meet, she was questioned about this incident by her coaches and later the Stasi, their reaction towards her was rude and they called her a liar.
