There's something about gymnastics from this era that looks so easy. And I don't mean it WAS easy, or is, but the way the gymnasts perform their routines makes it look effortless (in a good way). While the difficulty of the acrobatic skills has increased exponentially, the manner in which gymnastics is performed is so different. No matter how strong or powerful a present-day gymnast is, nor how energetic their execution, I will always, stylistically, prefer performances like these.

Sarah McClure Totally agree. Yurchenko was sublime.

hanakyne I know, she was just so exciting to watch and always looked in her element on floor with a real smile, some of the smiles the gymnasts do today are so fake. It’s such a shame she wasn’t chosen for the Olympics in 88. I know she went as an alternative, but she must’ve been absolutely gutted. The soviets at that time were in a league of their own

you can tell how impressed the commentator is with the fact that not only can Yurchenko throw a full in, but she stuck it !

This event and 1983 Euros were my favorites

Great landing on Szabo's double tuck dismount on floor. Even though it's lower difficulty than she had shown in the past, it was done very well!

There was never any doubt that Shushunova was the new No1..She was already linking moves then, so was Omelianchek. Silivas was far too young to be there, three years younger than Shushunova, barely 13 and looked about 10. While Katya and Natalia had to struggle with puberty.

Shoushunova's vaults were amazing! I think Gnauk's placement on the board was slightly too far back.

Szabo had the same floor exercise music as did Nadia Comaneci at the 1980 Olympics.

I have always marvelled at Elena Shushunova, but she was overscored on all 4 routines, especially bars and beam. She still deserved the AA gold but they made it so obvious that she was to be the new darling of the sport.
Ecaterina Szabo and Natalia Yurchencko were severely underscored, especially on beam and floor.

With respect, how was Elena's beam routine over scored? I didn't see any errors, and there was plenty of difficulty and innovation. Let alone, the other performances, how could her vaults have been any more perfect? She was consistently near perfect through out, besides the slight wobble on beam in the AA??

Omelianchik, triple twist off beam in '85! Who does that today?

Great! Все же временами судьи занижали оценки советским гимнасткам.

Good score for Gnauck on bars, considering the hop on her dismount. Unbelievably great routine otherwise!

So upsetting, Natalia Yurchenko faltered on her named skill on the vault... (Yurchenko Full Twisting Back Tuck & Yurchenko Full Twist)

  • @jezjez3938
    @jezjez3938 5 лет назад +8

Maxi Gnauck was stellar on floor and deserved a 10 for her astounding bars routine. Her resilience was admirable.
The commentator twice made mention of Szabo being overweight. Unacceptable!

Commentators remarking on gymnasts' size, weight, *increase* in weight, etc. are so insulting! In one broadcast I listened, disbelieving, as a commentator tossed off about an athlete's new haircut and tan. Stick with the skills, please.

Oh yes, it was very common. Look up Monica Phelps and you will see how commentators talked about such things openly... It was disgusting! Thankfully, you are not allowed to publish the weigh of athletes anymore.

This was when they start for gymnast to suffer from eating disorders. Bullies posing as broadcasters. What do they know about women's bodies.
