This episode was based off a comic made by The Animated Series creators Bruce Timm & Paul Dini with nearly the same title name "The Batman Adventures: Mad Love" published on December 14, 1993. I beleive it's mostly the same with some parts additional points like how as a teen Harley got a gymnastic scholarship to Gotham State University to do Psychology, where she didn't really study for her degre(Ex. Got a D- on her thesis and slept with her lecturer to get an A+ on it.) and hinting that she wanted to work with more well known villains to make money off helping/talking with them.

And Paul Dini, the man who created Harley does not get one cent of the royalties of anything produced from her character. All because she was created on an animated show. Had he wrote here first in comic book form, he would have had creative rights to her character.

Originally she was supposed to be a one-off character, but the animators liked her and the voice actress did a wonderful job so they gave her a recurring roll. In season 2 she even gets a main guest villain status and thus the legend of Harley Quinn was born.

Paul based her off his friend Arleen Sorkin, who had done a similar role and dressed similar in a dream sequence in Days of Our Lives where she played a jester and he asked her to come voice the character. Its an incredible backstory about the development of the character.

BTAS and TNBA did show this Joker’s origin (or allude) to it at least.
Here and in a later TNBA episode they say or allude that a gangster fell into chemicals at the Ace chemicals plant while fighting Batman, which makes sense since the show got a lot of inspiration for the Burton movies.
The show has always been good at showing their relationship as abusive even before they animated “Mad Love”, “Harley & Ivy” is probably the one that is the most clear with it before this one.
The worst thing about this is that the TNBA Joker is just way less expressive than any version before or after, in the original comic he still looked like in BTAS which made for some amazing panels. Also there’s some more blood when the police find Harley in the alley, the ending is super sad yet somehow so many people still don’t seem to get the point and look at Joker and Harley as some romance that should be emulated.
Do watch “Mask of the Phantasm” it’s still one of the best Batman movies.

ep 30 "Perchance to Dream" for Batman's voice actor, Kevin Conroy, favorite episode.
    ep 32 and 33 "Robin's Reckoning" for Robin's backstory.
ep 51 "The Man Who Killed Batman" for Mark Hamill's favorite monologue.

The reason the order of the episodes is different depending on where you watch them is because there are actually two legitimate orders: the broadcast order, the order the network aired the episodes (which on at least one occasion split a two-part episode up with like six other episodes between them, for some reason) and the production order, which is the order that was used for streaming services and the DVDs, I believe. The production order makes a bit more sense in terms of continuity, but no matter which order you watch them in, the Batman series isn't particularly big on that. So it doesn't really make much difference.

-Every incarnation of Joker tells a different backstory because he either doesnt know it or finds it funny to lie about his history to keep people guessing. Most of the time he uses it to manipulate people
    - Joker once told Harley his backstory but it was actually Poison Ivys history and backstory. That was the one that made her fall for him and his lies, which is funny because Poison Ivy is the one Harley ends up with in the end. seeing as her backstory is what shaped her as she grew up.
-Harley athletic ability has been shown in later incarnations that she was a former Gymnast good enough to get the Gold medal in the Olympics.(mirroring Robin/Nightwing)
-Harleys strength, durability, and resistance to pain was amped up later when you find out her best friend Poison Ivy created a Super Soldier formula like Winter Soldiers(Marvel) and gave it to her, to make sure she can survive he escapades with Joker. Ivy didn't want to see her best friend die in Jokers schemes and trusted Batman and Co to treat her fairly
-Jokers unpredictability and crazyness is equal to and counters the genius level intelects of DC. It sounds ridiculous because it is. But its how it is and kind of interesting in a way
-The chemical Joker fell in also gives him another layer of skin that can help heal his body faster and near complete resistance to pain along with impact resistance. Allowing him to exceed the bodies Limiters

Harley tries to get revenge and kill him, but the second Joker asks if it would help if he said he were sorry, Harley immediately forgives him.

    "The last reaction"
It's been a while, and later on you did Mask of the Phantasm, but yeah... so many good episodes that make for good reactions are buried in the later parts of the series, as shown with Mad Love. And in all this branch of the DC Animated Universe (Superman, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond...).
Hope you eventually react to some of those (if not entire series, some selected episodes... or for a Patreon; as once mentioned, the DC animated universe is quite solid, and, in the case of these series, self contained).
    "The new design"
Sadly (to an extent) the original designs proved to take a lot of time to animate, that's why they went for this simplified more "cartoonish" style. But seems it paid off to an extent: easier animation allowed to explore some stories that would later influence the canon, some of them quite dark for the average cartoon show.
    "Mad Love"
As mentioned, it's interesting how Harley Quinn, a character imagined to be only a cartoon sidekick gained such prominence she became one of the most beloved characters in all the Batman universe.
This episode not only gives more context to her story... it IS her official origin story: it was virtually adapted (panel to panel, word for word) from the animated series to the comics, something that was quite uncommon for the time (characters jumped from the comics to other media, not the other way around).
Harley Quinn wouldn't become a part of the Batman canon, though until the 2000's during the "No Man's Land" storyline, and (from then on), history was set: Harley stayed a favorite of the public so much she got this partial redemption arc to overcome her relationship with the Joker and move on to other despicable/antiheroic things... and better relationships.
And yeah! Return/Pick up the DC Animated Universe XD. Fun fact: not all the DC Animated films exist in the same continuity, most of the films actually exist in the continuity of Young Justice, rather than these animated series or are stand alone films (even when they use the voices of Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy).

  • @TheDeconstructivist
    @TheDeconstructivist 3 года назад

I feel like Emancipation of Harley Quinn hit poorly for two reasons: 1.) We didn't have the appropriate context from Suicide Squad. 2.) From a writing perspective, she CAN'T emancipate herself. It's like a TV show where there is sexual tension and then once the two characters get together the show isn't interesting any more. Her victimhood is actually important to the character and to the drama. Everybody WANTS her to to break free, but it's because she can't that her character is tragic (and ultimately, compelling).
I'm always down for more Batman reactions... but even if you never pick up the show again, you've GOT to watch Mask of the Phantasm. Best Batman movie ever, hands down.
