Of course there are aftermarket bad suppliers but like i said some aftermarket suppliers are also OEM suppliers (same part different box and price)
      One more thing. Are you sure that MAF sensor was for that model of car? parts mismatching can happen sometimes. Quick tip: check the OEM part code in an online EPC like 7zap.com or everythingbenz.com. With that code buy at your local parts store the OEM part or an alternative from a good supplier.

    Great video dan! Learned my lesson with aftermarket sensors. In october i had someone diagnose a bad MAF Sensor so i went into autozone thinking what the heck ill slap it on there and boom it was fixed..for now. Last week( February ) i turned on my car to go to work and immediately noticed the idle jumped around and the car smelled like gas. I thought it was just acting up and it would pass so i drove on and going down the street of my neighborhood the car would jerk on acceleration almost to the point that my head was hitting the horn!! I knew something was up but decided to go on the main road and merge onto the highway to get to work. Worst freaking mistake ever. The jerking stopped until i got to around 60 mph and everything seemed fine for 5 minutes. I pushed down the accelerator and noticed i wasnt going anywhere. All the dash lights came on and i realized the fucking car just stalled going 60mph in rush hour traffic !!!!! I had to call a tow truck on the side of the road and towed it into a shop. They diagnosed it to be a bad MAF sensor!!! The same one i had put in 4 months prior almost cost me my life!! Never again am i buying Aftermarket stuff!!!

If outfits a new car with a sensor that's bad enough to noticably affect driving behaviour, but good enough to not trigger a check engine light, imagine what it would mean if you are the lucky one with a "good enough" ignition coil AND injector AND pump AND camshaft sensor.

    Hello Dan,
    I just found your channel and this video may have just saved me some money. My 2017 2.2 turbo diesel has given me a p2196 code. O2 sensor signal biased/stuck rich bank 1 sensor 1. In Chile, car parts are very expensive and mechanics who know what they are doing are scarce. My scanner doesn't give me any data on how well the O2 sensor is functioning but it does tell me what the MAF sensor is reading. Using a website that allows me to calculate how much air is flowing into the motor and comparing it to the MAF sensor data, I found the MAF sensor reading from 2 to 6 g/s more than calculated. I ran the test 3 times using a different rpm and each time the sensor read high. Looks like I need a new MAF sensor. Thanks Dan

      Your right, but it's very hard to get to know who made the parts or if they meet specifications. For that we need to rely on the experience of our part supliers.

    Thank you for this. May I say that many millions of people have zero financial choice between oem and aftermarket. When money is a deciding factor, brand choice is important. Many aftermarket sensors are good, have a warranty, and are reasonably priced. Would you consider doing a video on what aftermarket brands are the best bet? Also, on many older cars, aftermarket is the only available option. Thanks again!

    That Auto Ditex would be a great way to start using a scope . The help section is an added bonus . To see the difference on the aftermarket parts is an eye opener . This is a critical part and you can SEE it impacts performance . Imagine having several parts like this on the same engine and having drivability issues . If each sensor is off - how much ? - total it up and you are chasing your tail with issues . You would have to have known good OEM data on each sensor to know if it's operating properly . And name brands are not always a guarantee . I just watched Eric O . diagnose a new Dayco timing belt that was off by several degrees and setting a code . And those parts with no name and a plain box could be suicide . The only thing I will buy in a plain box - is an air freshener ! Great diagnosis and lesson .

      Depends the difference in price and whether you can return them should they not work IMO. Lets be honest. Some OEM parts prices are crazy stupid.Reason why cheaper knock offs.

    • @flatratemaster
      @flatratemaster 5 лет назад +6

      @@patbutete1722 the cost of labor out ways the price difference,I am a tech and shop manager, and we warranty our repairs for 3 yr/36k miles, any profit will be lost having to pay a tech to rediagnose and replace the part again, and then we eat the added cost of the oem part

    • @patbutete1722
      @patbutete1722 5 лет назад +4

      @@flatratemaster That's a different argument altogether.Sure.I wouldn't want sub standard parts fitted on my car without my say so.Having said that, el cheapo knock off replacement parts have a significant role play.After all they are part of the reason why most cars that no longer have factory support sill on the road ..No?

    Hi Dan - it has taken a while but you have grown on me. I have disagreed with your logic a couple of times but most of the time we agree.
    On this video I questioned why you decided to use the Autosim to check the continuity on the plug when a simple multi meter would do the job, but after confirming continuity you then went on to demonstrate that by injecting a signal you can prove 100% that everything from the sensor plug all the way back is working properly. So good move.
    The reason it took me so long to accept your channel is your hands. Having been through many presentation courses I appreciate that standard wisdom recommends that we use hand gestures to help get our message across. Personally I think you need to tone it down a bit for people like me who have a phobia of windmills.
    Apart from that really minor issue - I now enjoy your videos and I am slowly making my way through the videos on your channel.
    For my own personal use I have ordered an Autel MK808 - will I be happy with it?

    That's a fantastic tutorial in great detail! I wish you went into more details of the common failures of MAF sensors, as they usually don't completely fail but start sending wrong values to the ECU. Especially on Diesel engines, those platinum wires get covered with dust, grease and soot. In my book, first procedure for those before replacing the MAF is to try and clean it up with MAF cleaning spray, although it's often only a temporary fix.

    Thanks for the description of how the MAF sensor works. I always read the part of attempting to keep the same temperature or current on the sensor it never made sense. I just knew higher voltage meant more airflow. But knowing that its an NTC resistor in a bridge makes everything so much more clear. It makes the failure modes a bit more obvious and you can see how different things will affect the performance of the sensor.
