Shawshank Redemption and Highlander are two of the best movies I have ever seen. Until your comment, I hadn’t realised that Captain Hadley and the Kurgan were the same actor!!! Wow, some actor.
The Shawshank Redemption is largely based on Stephen King's short story (Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption). So, it's pretty clear -- if he really did have a bad audition -- that the film's writers, producer, and director clearly wanted him and the audition was merely a formality.
I think Clancy Brown absolutely dominated every scene he was in. His portrayal of Captain Hadley added the necessary element of menace to what otherwise would have been a timid story about a prison break.
I don't think Clancy Brown realizes how good he is at acting when he downplays himself like this. He always has screen presence in all of the films he's been in and that requires a lot of talent. If I ever meet him in person I would be fangirling really hard.

What a great story. The idea that the man who played the coldest, cruelest character in the movie is this big teddy bear who thought they made a mistake when they flew him in for a read is just so damn charming.
Thank you for not talking over the guest like most interviewers. You lay out your question and let the guest answer. That is a great quality trait of a show host/interviewer.
The fact that he's on one of my favourite films, Highlander and also one of my daughter's favourite cartoons, Spongebob Squarepants as the voice of Mr.Krabs just shows how much a legend this actor is.
Probably one of the finest pictures ever projected onto the cinema screen by light and lens. That Opera record scene where Andy blares the vocals of those angelic voices and Red says "I have no idea to this day what those two Italians ladies were singing about, truth is I don't want to know..." as the entire prison stops to listen... what a moment in film composition.
"Step aside Mert, this f*ckers having himself and accident..." I mean, the actor playing Mert, Jude Ciccolella, is no slouch at playing a heavy himself. Beating up a bound Bruce Willis in Sin City as well as Bogs... Absolutely murderers row of great character actors in Shawshank.
Clancy Brown is one of the greatest actors ever. He deserves far more credit than he has ever been given. It's a crime that he hasn't been given the credit he so deserves.
One of my favorite movies, of course, and I couldn't imagine any other actor or on the planet playing that part better, perfection and so many actors would have over-acted it, how lucky we were that he got the part.
When I am watching some random movie I haven't seen before because it looks interesting, I usually am wondering if it will be good or not. But if Clancy makes an appearance, or even just his voice at first, like in Cowboys and Aliens, I smile because I already love it. I get to watch Clancy Brown.
Wow. I'm really loving these interviews, and seeing Clancy talk about Shawshank (my favourite mo ie of all time) I have to go rewatch it again... Bravo Michael! These are great.
I think it's funny how Clancy Brown struggled to "get into character" for his role as Captain Byron Hadley. That often happens when the character is 180 degrees opposite from the actor playing him. Martin Kove had a similar experience auditioning for John Kreese in The Karate Kid. It can take a lot of practice for a fairly "normal, humane, person" to immerse themselves in the role of a cold, ruthless, demented individual. Both Byron Hadley and John Kreese are legendary movie villains.
I really like that he’s clearly a nice guy who just couldn’t face shouting at a young girl. It’s such a sweet aside that says so much about his character and the kind of man he is.
I want to see Clancy, Eric Gurry, Sean Penn, Alan Ruck, Ally Sheedy, Esai Morales, and Warren 'Tweety' Jerome on one of those Josh Gad zoom reunion videos.
Clancy Brown is one of favorite actors. Not only is he an intense guy on screen but the guy is an awesome voice actor. And then I find this... I just like the guy.
I'm from Northeast Ohio originaly, and I have visited the Mansfield Boys Reform School several times. When I saw the movie for the first time, I almost choked on my popcorn when I realized where they were filming...
I think Clancy's Luthor was better than Michael's, not that it was Michael's acting or his fault, his Luthor just a poorly written version of Luthor compared to Clancy's in Superman The Animated series, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
@@ValiantWrestlingyea I gotta agree with ya on this one....I don't blame Michael either....but Clancys Luthor was just written, which idk if an actor would call being an animated character an advantage or disadvantage (guess it depends....I suppose method actors like heath ledger was in Dark Knight and how you actually could see him as the Joker but I bet he'd have a harder time finding his voice for joker because he was just living the role ya know....) The problem i find with The DCEU i would compare as similar to when a video game or comic has a really kickass storyline that i can only imagine would be kick ass as a live action film....but rather they totally ignore the awesome lore or arc in the game (or comic) that the film or show borrows the title and characters then rather than just use the awesome source material available to them in MOST cases and instead they take FULL liberties with the license....in some cases it's almost as if the writers and directors let's just use the disasterous films that they called Suicide Squad while i can give them credit for casting which they hàve the always done pretty decent at (ignoring the fuckin drunken decision to pick Zuckerberg as Lex for some reason that I'll never understand and you can't make me lmao) it's as if the writers and directors had no fuckin clue that ALL THEY HAD TO DO (in my opinion anyway) to make a Squad movie ppl would love based on the killer story alone is check out the Suicide Squad animated movie "Assault on Arkham" to me , it still ranks as not only one the best dc animated films but just one of the best films in the DC film universe as a whole..... sorry so long winded....I def can't recommend Assault on Arkham any higher to a fan or someone who's just curious how they could've done the Squad movie right from the beginning....check it out if ya haven't

He's a lot of fun too.One Summer,My friend and I were following Clancy from his place to Venice beach, heading out onto the freeway,my car behind his black Impala convertable, and his sister Beth was sitting in the passengers seat. She started lighting and throwing firecrackers back at us. They would hit the windshield like little explosions. My friend was driving, and we had such a hard time seeing the freeway lane. lol.
I didn't recognize him, so I looked him up to see who he played in the movie, and was shocked. Nice to see he's been a successful voice actor.
It tickles me that the guy who voiced MY FAVORITE version of Lex Luthor is also the same guy who voices Mr. Krabbs from Spongebob!
Numerous voice narrations on commercials and TV programs too.
You ought to check him out as Kurgan from “Highlander”
I'm old now 40 I remember before int in school and they rolled in a TV and VHS combo weird how small the tvs were then but we had eyes like superheroes lol where we could watch movies strict school but our art teacher was so layd back let us watch highlander stand by me terminator I loved highlander I've only ever watched it on VHS il have 2 rewatch it agane
Massively underrated. Always love him in any role he plays.
I don’t know why I was so against watching the film for years, and then finally I started watching it and just got so pulled in. Clancy Brown stood out to me, and I said “Oh my god, it’s Mr. Krabs, that’s amazing” So talented, so diverse, and I see here now, such a nice guy.
Also Lex Luthor, from the DC Animated Universe.
Clancy was also terrific as the US Attorney General in Billions.
What a great story. The idea that the man who played the coldest, cruelest character in the movie is this big teddy bear who thought they made a mistake when they flew him in for a read is just so damn charming.
He is one of those actors who immediately makes the movie worth watching.Great screen presence, first class scene steeler.
He was so awesome in this movie. He brought it to another level.
"Step aside Mert, this f*ckers having himself and accident..."
I mean, the actor playing Mert, Jude Ciccolella, is no slouch at playing a heavy himself. Beating up a bound Bruce Willis in Sin City as well as Bogs... Absolutely murderers row of great character actors in Shawshank.
Yeah,but this is about Clancy.
@@xScooterAZx Does he act in a vacuum? That whole scene on the rooftop is a collaboration. This is no disrespect to Clancy.
@@seaninness334 Sorry,didnt mean to offend.
He was awesome in this movie. So many incredible actors in this movie and amazing script.
He deserved the Oscar for that performance.
The two best Lex Luthors ever.
Wow. I'm really loving these interviews, and seeing Clancy talk about Shawshank (my favourite mo ie of all time) I have to go rewatch it again...
Bravo Michael! These are great.
Clancy Brown as Career Sergeant / Private Zim STARSHIP TROOPERS!!!!
MEDIC!!
@@DW3010 shit!!!! i should of said that!!! good one, mate!!
"One of the BEST MOVIES EVER MADE....period." I fully concur. 🌱
You know why they hired him with that bad audition? Because of what he did in Highlander or Pet Cemetery. He’s great!
They knew if that was a bad day, come shooting day he will be 1000x better!!!
even before those movies Bad Boys with Shawn Penn. Fuck great actor.
@@zamarripa2999 So different than the actual guy.
Love this guy so humble but a amazing actor
Clancy Brown is the greatest Lex Luthor that ever was!
Francisco Q It’s hilarious you’re writing this on Michael Rosenbaum’s channel.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive It's still true though.
What a modest man! His characters are iconic, yet he is humble.
Clancy Brown NEVER disappoints.
Yeah he really is. I might not seek his work specifically or intentionally, but I’m always pleased when he pops up in whatever I’m watching.
I want to see Clancy, Eric Gurry, Sean Penn, Alan Ruck, Ally Sheedy, Esai Morales, and Warren 'Tweety' Jerome on one of those Josh Gad zoom reunion videos.
Earth 2 is where I first saw Clancy. He has stood out ever since.
I always liked seeing Mr Brown in any movie.
So humble. Love this man. He plays the bad guy so well. He stole the show in Highlander.
Are you ready kids!?!
Mr. Brown is one of my favorite actors.
Clancy grew up about 15 miles away from me.
Great interview 👍🏼
Loved seeing him pop up in the mandalorian!
I loved him as Brother Justin in Carnivalè. Underrated show
Always thought his character Hadley was the most memorable character in the film. A real monster.
The fact that Clancy is from southwest Ohio makes his role in that film all the more cooler.
You could put Clancy in ANY movie and he would do justice to whatever role he was doing. Underrated actor.
Michael will always be the best Lex Luthor. Great interview. I love Mr. Crab. Great interview. Dude is owning it as Kurt on the new Dexter series!
Amazing guy and actor. Also great seeing him play a big sweetheart in ‘Promising Young Woman’.
Can not wait for season 9 of Dexter!!! This is my guy. 🤘🤘
What? Season 9? O
@@theplanetruth aaahhhh yeup! Have you not heard?
The most amazing thing about Shawshank was that it came out with little fanfare or promotion. I went to some random mid-week showing back in 1994 not expecting much & left having seen one of the greatest films of the last 30 years.
Mr. Brown reminds me of what a famous actor once said...."A Great Actor NEVER thinks they are as good as their Peers....THAT is what makes them Great". I remember watching this movie over and over for a few months and then seeing Clancy Brown show up on the TV show E R and thinking WHOA....how is he going to pull off the role.....and of course he nailed it too! Love This Guy! Cheers From Columbus, Ohio
It's called 'imposter syndrome' - normally the best people for jobs are people who get that as they are self-aware enough to know when they are doing things wrong. (EDIT: Ha! I posted this 30seconds before Clancy mentioned Imposter syndrome! I leave the post up though.)
thought i remembered him from ER you are right he made that character work I think he even hooked up with the head female doctor during his few episodes
Imagine being him, being so polite and getting all these crazy roles.
Clancy Brown's characters as Byron Hadley and Viking were scary as hell. In other words, he nailed his roles in his prison movies!
He "nails" all his roles. :}
He played a great character!! The roof scene was really great! Also when Andy is listening to music in the locked room and he taps on the glass with the club.
