    If you plan on becoming an interior decorator, then practice having better than average patience. When I consulted the services of decorators and contractors, I was appalled to encounter too many people who lacked creativity, patience, professionalism, and work ethic. Many don't want to work hard. They only want to paint everything white or beige, add some "modern" accent pieces, and move gray furniture in a house. It's pathetic. This is not decorating. Everyone doesn't want their home to be basic and minimal. Stop going for the easiest design layouts. Be creative. LEARN HOW TO USE COLOR. Learn which colors complement each other. Learn about room layouts. Learn how to expertly mix and match patterns. Learn about design techniques, fabrics, and textiles. You cannot call yourself an "interior decorator" when you don't even challenge yourself. All you do is make everyone's home look like a hotel room. After decorating is done, a home should look lived in and be unique to the homeowner. That is how you test the qualifications of an interior decorator. If the decorator makes everyone's home look exactly the same, regardless of the project and regardless of who lives there, the person can't decorate anything...not for me anyway.

      You can learn to draw! I used to think you had to have some sort of talent you are born with to draw, and that helps, but drawing is pretty much like anything else, you can learn :) Everyone in my drawing class improved so much by the end of one semester (about 3.5 months) 2-4 hours a week learning different techniques. Don't let that stop you if its really what you want to do!

    Questions! What schools/colleges do you recommend and if I choose to attend college to become an interior decorator, do I major in interior design or communication or business?

    • @Adaontez
      @Adaontez  4 года назад +25

      Hey Elyse! it's honestly depending on what area you are located in. I chose to move to Toronto because the design world is better than where I was. So my advice would be to research the areas near you and see which one has the most to offer to you as a designer. The interior decorating program is something you do separate from a degree. What most schools offer is a pathway program once you finish the interior decorating diploma. This just means you can knock off almost 1-2 years of the interior design degree if you want to continue school. The program its self can be a two-year program or you can do a fast track that completes the program in a year and 4 months. Also another advice.. when selecting your school try looking for ones that have lots of courses offered so you get the most out of your time. Also, try to see if they have great schools they are affiliated with, this will make it easier for you if you decide to do the pathway and continue with the degree program.
      I hope this helped! let me know if you have any more questions.

    Hey I have a couple questions when it comes to being an interior decorator number one is, is the wage stable like will I be able to find work and make a liveable income? And my second question I have is about the job it's self is it stressful? Will I be going crazy over work loads or doing to much?

    • @Adaontez
      @Adaontez  4 года назад +9

      It all depends on how hard you work at it. You can find work if you look for it if you are good at what you do often jobs will look for you. You can absolutely make a killing in this industry you've just gotta find the right clients that mesh well with you. Like every job it has it's highs and lows... it all comes down to how you manage yourself. If you can't handle too much workload then you should limit how much work you take on at a time. With time you will know how long certain things will take you and you can then better plan out your schedule. I hope this helps! I plan to do another video answering more questions on this since I've gotten a bit more questions lately.. feel free to ask more if you are confused with anything related to the field.

      Liyaa Seals hey girl Idk if you’re still interested but I recently discovered that doing an interior design course at a credited online school is the best way to get started. It covers decorating , and all designs aspects as well , without costing you so much money and you can be done in less than a year . It’s also a great thing to do if you’re a little bit scared of committing to a four year degree. After doing the course , if you love it and want to continue your education, then you can follow up with that, but You can be an interior designer basically anywhere with only being certified. A lot of successful designers don’t have degrees. Hope that helped ❤️
