The first instrument is a cat. It is played in two voices, first the cat, then the human ;-)
The other is a hurdy-gurdy. In the 8th century, the Arabs conquered almost all of Spain and brought, among other things, string instruments with them to Europe. During the Reconquista, the Spanish replaced the bow with a disk that was turned with a crank. This makes a permanent tone possible. From there it spread in various variations throughout Europe. Patty uses the most common variant today from 18th century France. It is the most diverse. Michalina is another well-known player and can explain to you how it works:

Alestorm comes from Scotland. They're having a hard time speaking in the UK right now.
Patty Gurdy aka Patricia Büchler is often mistaken for Irish, but is actually German. She became known with the pirate metal band Storm Seeker. When her acoustic version of a single became more successful than the original, she left the band and has been solo ever since. She calls her style Celtic Pop Folk, but actually nothing is safe from her:

Because of her past she has good contacts in the folk metal scene and has made numerous guest appearances. Their hurdy-gurdy could already be heard on the penultimate Alstorm album. At the last one she was a background singer. Now she has the lead. I'm curious to see whether she'll disembark at the next port.

honestly I haven't been blown away by vocals since Floor Jansen. and that is a pretty high bar. best thing that has happened to alestorm and I have listened to them since they were Battleheart
