"We loved the original so much, we gave it a 9.6. This edition improves on it in almost every way... so we gave it the same score..." ~IGN
Few months ago they did the same thing "great game, everything is improved..." but actually they gave lower score to some games...so this is one step forward for IGN xD
Because it was reviewed on consoles and there are some minor issues
Everything they talked about in this was in the original pc release. even the controller layout, which is the same a divinity original sin ones controller layout. the only thing they needed to say was it was on consoles now. the frist original sin's enhanced edition added voice acting and the controller layout but those were both included in the first go around of original sin 2. - its simply just a console port unless they added stuff not mentioned in the video.
Cole Selensky the definitive edition (pc and console) added a bunch of stuff, like new arena stuff, new squirrel npc companion, reworked the act in Arx, and a bunch more. The patch notes is pretty extensive, so it’s definitely more than just the console port.
Patch notes:
docs.google.com/document/d/1IcADAJsLeHHXYjCnR5MwCm9GTWRdKzRtIYcCqO_RI6U/mobilebasic
It doesn't work that way. Games don't necessarily stand up to the test of time - kind of like video game inflation. The same applies to DOS. The improvements make up for some all of the quality lost to time.
Still pissed this wasn’t called the Divinitive Edition.
Might hurt sales for those who dont enjoy puns
Thats the real reason why its a 9.6 instead of a 10.
This isn't a review, it's an overview video
Cameron Thompson Judging from all these likes I think people enjoyed that pun.
Yup, it's a "sin" they didn't
Does anyone else watch DOS2 videos just to hear what you already know
Very much so.
You got me
I've never even made it part a quarter way of act 2. (Just because I don't finish games in general) this or the goat rpg of all time.
Omg yes! Hahaha
:D Yup, beat the game twice already.
Anyone else here due to BG3 hype?
Me
Just bought the game. I'm lost, confused, and not a clue how to even properly build my character..... And I'm loving every minute of it.
A fantastic piece, still 80 hours in haven't even reached deep in to it, there is so much attention to detail and replayability it is INCREDIBLE.
mel b it has plenty of puzzles and the world can be approached in different ways, plus I believe there is a story difficulty now meaning combat is much easier.
@@melxb The side quests are definetely as creative as those in The Witcher 3, maybe even more. There's a variety of great characters which also can be added to your group. Nevertheless i wouldn't say the contact with the other NPCs isn't comparable with The Witcher 3 because of the fact that it is top-down.
@@melxb I know your comment is a year old and maybe you bought the game since.
But I'll assume like you didn't for the sake of praising a crazy amazing game! Loll.
I waited a long time to play this! It's on sale right now and I can tell you I regret not getting it sooner even at full price.
I'm a big fan of games that let you choose your own path while making a difference in the story.
I love old school RPGs like Kotor 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, the final fantasy series, chrono trigger or more recent one like Morrowind or Oblivion, dragon age 1 (Maybe the third one but gameplay was a bit boring) and mass effect 1 and 2. If you're into any of these games you're gonna love it. Also if you're not comfortable with the combat but want to experience only the campaign you can there's an option when you start a new game .
@@melxb Baldurs gate is more dnd then divinity. It's definitely gonna get a heavy UI change.
I just heard of this game today. Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time. Just recently platinum Persona 5 which took me 225 hours. Will I enjoy this game? I'm not familiar with playing games where you look down at a character. I'm used to first-person and third-person games only. Can I still enjoy this game without playing the first divinity game?
This game shocked me with its level of depth. A masterpiece and an instant classic!
how do you feel baldurs gate 3 is
9.6 one of the best RPG's ever lovingly crafted based off of feedback and criticism from the fanbase specifically.
I give this game 10/10
Definitely 10/10
not a fan of games like these. So it's 8/10, still one of the best games I played
@@lilyflower6265 No, that's not necessary. The two games have different stories with different characters entirely.
dungeons and dragons 80s nerds am i right?
The freedom that you have in this game is outright jaw-dropping. Seriously, be creative, throw everything you have at your problem and see what sticks! Also the music is absolutely fantastic, my favorites being "Power of Innocence", "Rivellon" and "Mead, Gold and Blood" give em' a listen!
Borislav Slavov is a great composer.
my fave is Blood, Soul and Power!
For real, me and a buddy had a lot of trouble early on and even wanted to quit because of how unfair the fights could feel, until we found out just how unlimited you are. We taught both our mages teleport and use it to send enemies and items all over the place to completely ruin their formations, it's awesome.
It has a real learning curve but once you're over it it really sticks, can't wait to finish it a few times and finally go back and finish the original :D
The beasts theme tune is amazing
This game worth getting?
This game is a masterpiece. So many games tout their player freedom and choice, but this one of the only games where I truly felt that freedom. It's just an absolute joy to play.
Can you give an example or a scenario where you felt more freedom compared to games like say Witcher 3 and Skyrim?
@@weaverquest While I do agree that games like Witcher 3 and/or Skyrim have bigger, more open worlds, there's usually not much you can do in these games outside of what was intended for the player to do, i.e. quests, simple combat encounters etc., whereas in Div 2 you're presented with different problems and given huge amounts of tools to deal with them, this game has very organic systems that allow you to create cool and unique scenarios. lets compare a battle sequence in witcher 3 and div 2: in withcer u can just fight, mash buttons, maybe use a few spells and thats it. in div 2 u can set traps beforehand to annoy your opponents, u can teleport a pesky wizard into a pool of lava, you can set entire areas with fire, set your bowman on top of the hill for better accuracy or just turn your opponents into sheep if you feel like it. dont get me wrong, i loove witcher 3 but div 2 just gives you much more options and is a bit more fun to play imo.
@@weaverquest Skyrim and Witcher are more akin to action games than RPGs. Not saying that in a bad way, just that they don't offer nearly as much choice of tools and methods in which you resolve different situations. This extends even to completely unrelated stuff happening around you such as having the ability to heal the bleeding man in fort Joy, offer alcohol to the healer, or kill him yourself.
@@juanbarb57 I am not sure how giving players options sets this game apart from others. In Skyrim, you have a lot of options as well. When encountered with an enemy, you can charge with a shield and sword at hand using regular old melee combat, or you can conjure monsters to distract him, shoot him with a bow with paralysis applied and let your monsters finish the job, or use many of the destruction spells you have whether it is fire, shock, or frost. Use alteration magic to give yourself armor and get close with two handed weapons etc. And I haven't even talked about games' unique mechanic shouting which you can use for many things from slowing down time to calling dragons for help. Yes you have options so many options and skills and magic. But the game is designed in a way that they all work against every kind of enemy so you are not solving a problem with encounters just randomly do what you want. I personally don't like this kind of freedom. I don't think I am doing something designers didn't intend to because they balanced the game so that it all just works. So much variety can give you a sense of freedom but it is not a thoughtful process so it gets boring and uninteresting. In Witcher 3 you don't have many options, but you have to use different tactics. Witcher school philosophy depends on knowledge and being methodical so it makes sense that you are playing the game in an intented way. Preparing a battle by reading about your enemy, brewing potions, applying oil to your blades, selecting the right kind of skills from the skill tree, using glyphs and runes to increase the intensity of your signs or other stats etc. is not only fun but also adds a new dimension to regular action combat. But there isn't very much depth to those systems so the combat gets repetitive and boring especially since Witcher 3 is such a long game. Though a killing monsters is Witcher's regular job so it makes sense that it would be repetitive from a narrative standpoint. It sounds like I am complaining about both of those design choices but the thing is when someone is talking about freedom in a video game it is very vague so I am very skeptical about it.
@@weaverquest I'm pretty sure you didn't play divinity, dude. You would understand exactly what he meant if you had.
I’m sorry, but they didn’t complete a playthrough? How are you reviewing a game when you haven’t done act 3&4 which has had the most changes
That's IGN quality for you.
@@klarnorbert oh noo, I'm crying bc they didn't play a nearly perfect game again
@@AceticTWO you cant give a movie review when you only watch 30mins of it they should complete the game before they review
Stop messing about, it's a 10. The greatest RPG there's ever been.
Quick tip, on console you can force split screen in case you prefer it and don't like the sudden snap by pushing left on the d pad
Bioware has fallen and disintegrated. Larian is now filling their role in the game development world. CD Projekt is still amazing and hopefully the real Bethesada will return to us soon.
This
I love DOS2 but Larian has still ways to go until they reach the level of CDPR. Hopfully they will rule the Action RPG and traditional RPG genre together.
well CDPR is a huge studio, they own GOG
The Witcher 3's budget was 80 mil $ so we cant compare them like that
Real Bethesda is here, them not always doing what you want doesn't mean they're not here.
Obsidian+Bethesda=Real Bethesda
My wife and I spent 10s of hours with DOS1 on PS4 a few years back, and being back on the couch with DOS2 is just a joy. Besides being a kickass game, it's one of the best local co-op games on console.
This is my favorite RPG of all time. Played through multiple times with different character builds. Combat is so dynamic, tons and tons of crafting, a story that you can effect. Masterpiece.
Is there a sequel?
This game is on sale and im trying to decide
@@InnerRise not yet. Divinity Original Sin 2 is definitely worth the buy.
tons and tons of crafting, You convince me!
@@InnerRiseBaldurs gate 3 coming soon, its similar to this game but going to be much better in terms of everything
Imagine if larian does a fallout series... I can already imagine so many apocalyptic interactions.
I’ve beaten this game twice on the standard edition and am currently playing through on Definitive. It’s turned an already fantastic game into one that is even more balanced. Plenty of quality of life changes too.
If you were holding off on this game because it seemed a bit too complicated, now is your time to dive in.
It’s just as complex and challenging as ever, but a lot of “what the hell just happened” moments are either gone/understandable
Will I enjoy this game? I love Witcher 3 and Persona 5
They made a review without playing through the rewritten third act?!
When I'm not playing this game,I'm watching videos about it
Same lol
Me too :)
Damn, this is my life right now.
hm.. have never played this before. Would I have to play the first one to understand the lore behind this?
@@andrefrazier8653 No need to play the first one,get this and have fun
Just make sure to talk to animals all the time, or deny yourself one of the game’s great joys.
DOS2 is easily one of the best RPG's of all time, period.
Will I enjoy this game? I love Witcher 3 and Persona 5
@@adrianelias2365 No you will thoroughly hate it with passion.
I used to hate turn-based RPGs... and then I played this game.
Why was this one different?
@@victor_734it wasn’t, he used to hate turn-based combat, played this game, and still hates it.
just finished this mf with over 150+ hours. Truly one of the best RPGs ever
I’ve been thinking about picking it up! The backlog of games is huge 🔥
I spent 100+hrs on the PC and didn't scratch the surface. Ready to play on console and finish it
virgen virgen I keep looking online and can't find it is it out already
is this enjoyable alone on pc
Will I enjoy this game? I love Witcher 3 and Persona 5. Took me 250 hours to platinum Persona 5.
Now on switch. yay!
Playing BG3 currently so decided to check this out. These are masterpiece games. DOS looks to be more of the prequel to BG3 rather than BG2.
No, it uses a completely different ruleset and has a completely different setting. Writing is pretty different too, more whimsical.
one of the best RPG's out there! shockingly deep & interactive, albeit a bit arcane & intimidating to learn at first.
I've put about twenty hours into DOS 1, and while I agree with every single praise everyone has said, I am stuck. I have killed every enemy so far that can't one-shot me, gone through at least two dungeons I wasn't yet directed to, checked every single container in all of Cyceal, picked every single pocket in that town, exhausted every single dialogue option, completed every quest that doesn't require me to go into an area where a single enemy will kill me immediately, including several from outside the town, and I am completely stuck on what to do next. I have inspected every letter of the journal, down to making sure that upper case B was not an ß, and I have no idea how to proceed. Like I said, exhausted every single dialogue option, in turn, at least three times. I don't. Know. How. To proceed! I never had this problem with Morrowind, a game similarly having no waymarkers.
So does Original Sin 2 have this same problem? If so, I'm avoiding it.
@@omegagilgamesh I mean, if you actually talked to every person you would have sufficient quests. If you've legitimately done everything in Cyseal including solving the undead problem, then go to the next map. It's up north.
@@Ahov that's the thing, I know it has to be something I'm overlooking, but for the life of me I can't figure out what.
Larian could work on a spiritual successor for *Jagged Alliance.* Just repeat (or even improve) the "Original Sin 2 formula", but replace swords with guns and would be perfect.
Or Silent Storm. Same deal just in World War II.
@@BrokenNoah OR here's a crazy idea...jus play one of the millions of games with guns, like Valkyrie chronicles, or xcom 2..... seriously, there isn't nearly enough medival rpg games to compete with the of dutys we're flooded with, and you guys already want more guns..... sheesh
+studster87 Chill we're just speculating what dormant games Larian can revive with the same system and care they have shown with the more recent entry in the Divinity franchise. Larian can do whatever they want to do with their next game.
Also... XCOM is not a RPG, that's why I mentioned Jagged Alliance.
What a great idea Davi!! I've been waiting for a worthy new Jagged Alliance for the longest time, and have been stunned that no one seems to manage to iterate on the glory of JA1 and 2. Larian definitely could pull it off!!!
What got my respect is the depth of their world.. every item has a mwaning, even a common item that lay on the floor can give you a story or a quest.. for example almost all body parts in the game has a unique story for each of them..
If there was ever an RPG worthy of a 10/10 this game would be it :)
9.6 for the original and 9.6 for the improved version? Wat
Smooth Hansen No 9.6 for the console version.
@@mattwilcks5156 the console version is the same as the improved version 😑
Kristoff3334 So your saying the console version and the PC version are the same?
He’s not reviewing content he’s reviewing how the game plays on console.
At what point does IGN state that the new content would not be included in the review and that they would only focus on performance and gameplay? Which have also been improved btw.
Smooth Hansen
When he said he hasn’t played act three.
only sharing this tips
for those who wants
1. didn't care if we got underleveled but win the battle with lovely 100% hp, armor
2. collect resurrect scroll and potion a lot and super rarely use it
3. want to know how to use sneak + guerrila properly (because people in a lot of forum said it was useless)
use
invisible spell 1st then go sneak (use cloak and dagger/any
teleport/jump skill + use shift to determind sneak position.... any not
red vision is posible... even the back of the enemy (for example use
rogue/shadowblade.... then go invisible then go sneak.... mostly forever
not found)
skip until cd of invisible spell is 1
delay turn (if the 1st turn is that hero)
atk
the last 1 point is to use to invisible
repeat
i guaranteed it will super rare for the enemy to search for you (mostly just standing by.... drinking tea)
i'd say this step is easy level...
or....
go
sneak.... and jump using "cloak and dagger" and walk more... but it was
harder than the top step.... and much easier for the enemy to look for
you....
i'd say this step is medium level...
negative part
very long gameplay.... combine with immune death + the chain if you want a little bit faster
Yup, here thanks to Nintendo JUST DROPPING THIS F***ING BOMB ON US
Hope performance holds up. If so I'm there!
Marc W sameeeeeee
Mar Vill wasteland 2 was a horrible port but I liked the game
I'm loving it on switch.
My friends and I recently started the multiplayer story on PC and its amazing. Not sure why we waited so long.
Reviews the definitive edition without even finishing it or seeing any of the changes to the third act. Well done IGN, rushing out a review to get views even if it's a pointless one.
The review is obviously about the console port...
@@FrenkieWest32 which he didn't even finish...
@Deman Diealleskan the point still stands the person reviewing this did not finish the game at all, instead just threw together a review like he wasn't even trying.
Just because he didnt finish it doesnt mean someone else in the IGN Team didnt finish it and told him about it. Not very likely but hey just saying
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that the reviewer keeps referring to the top-down view as isometric? Isometric is like baldurs gate, the angles are always the same.
I hate to be "that dude" but why not simply give this game a 10
@Greek Goddess this game is arguably one of the best RPGs ever made
5 minute video giving me 12 seconds of information on what's actually different between the definitive and classic editions. Thanks IGN.
Very happy larian pulled through with another strong change to this game. Deserves the success
In case you’re wondering whether or not you should get this game, ask yourself these two questions:
1. Do you love Baldur’s Gate 3, but hate the sight of any and all dice?
2. Do you love Baldur’s Gate 3, but hate cutscenes and talking head style interactions when talking with NPCs?
If the answer to both questions was “yes”, then get this game
Here because of the Nintendo direct. I’ve never played any of these
Score before 9.6, now 9.6. Let’s make another review nonetheless.
Larian Studios should be in charge of Fallout, not Bethesda.
Syber-VHS a return to form fallout game developed by Larian would singlehandedly return the c-rpg genre to the mainstream. We need this.
I like the first person Fallout games, so no
@@bowskiaws5432 i like isometric Fallout games, so yes
No. Bethesda is still king of RPGs as far as I'm concerned.
Jacob why?
I actually didn't know it has the ability to go offline and split and join at the same time on the same screen!!! gonna get this definitive edition!.
Have you played yet
"looking forward to the largely rewritten third act when I finally get to it." Shouldn't you have done that before posting the review? Honestly that third act is where the story started to fall off a bit for me, and I was curious to what the definitive edition would change.
my friends on console just buy this game and make sure one of your party member has "Pet Pal". every quest feels so much impactful because the characters you meet have emotional feel to them. there are lot of surprises when you go through story. I am playing this game 3rd time on PC now
gthakur17 Pet Pal was kinda useful in the first game. It pretty much allowed for new quests or hints to an area/boss but I felt it was barely frequent.
I’m guessing that changed in the second game?
Here as D3 died at Blizzcon 2018...
For me, this is a top 5 all time game. It's the benchmark for isometric rpgs. Pillars of Eternity and Torment are both great games, but they are not on the level of DOS 1 or 2.
I'm currently playing DOS1, never play the series before and I love it! Planning to buy the second after i finish dos1
@@kevinr278 nah powers aren't useless lol. It just makes the player think instead of abusing cc...which you used to do, right? XD
@@kevinr278 If you don't know what CC is then i'm afraid you didn't understand me. CC is what you call crowd control. It is usually done using spells to petrify, stun, freeze, paralyse or knockdown enemies so they lose their turn and can't attack, cast spells or evade. CC is a core element of the first game and second game but more accessible and easy to do in the first because it doesn't have the phyical and magic armor mechanic. Did you actually think i was saying that you cheated? Lol
Because that is exactly what the new physical/magic armor mechanic does lol...that is to mitigate abuse of cc.
Edit: not saying cc is bad...i used to do it too, everyone uses cc XD
It's a 10 now since ign not using decimal score anymore
The worst part about this game is that it ends.
Original score - 9.6
*comes back better then ever*
Definitive Edition score - 9.6
...Whaaat?
This is crazy. Nothing was said about downsides. How is this game not a 10? In its respective genre this game is perfect.
They literally did the same thing with divinity original sin enhanced edition.
Ign is a joke.
Heed my advice! Play this game on Tactician or Honor difficulty! You'll be thanking me when you're waging massive intense battles and pulling off the win by the skin of your teeth.
my first playthrough was on tactician. no regrets.
I'm not even done with the first part and I'm in love with this game
This is an UNDERRATED masterpiece of an RPG
Based on the comments and review it is not underrated at all
Gamers and misunderstanding the word 'underrated', name a better combo.
Great review Brandin. Have been listening to you on the IGN Xbox podcast for a while, and it’s nice to see you review one of my favourite games ever.
something that the reviewer does not mention. There are balance issues with overpowered skilled tress (I am looking at the summoner skill tree and the lone wolf skill tree). And all of the encounters are wonderfully designed. There is always a way to improve the outcome of a scenario through strategy.
just bought it and it took me about 8 hours to figure out what the hell was going on. 10/10
haha I'm also planning to buy this game
Why did you only do a console graphic comparison? Is a PC automatically out the running cause you know the graphics will be better?
It's literally everything rpg into one game. The only downside is, if you're more used to casual rpg than old school rpg, this game might overwhelm you.
Already played this game 5 times in a row when it came out XD. Is it worth giving it another run? Any new stuff in definitive edition?
you can pet and talk to dogs 10/10
Got it on release dat and I've been loving the game!!! Makes me wish I had a gaming rig so I could have enjoyed it last year too!

Did they forget computers existed?...
where is the difference between the eiditions? enhanced.. definitive... i mean whats going on with all these editions
"Definitive Edition" is just the game. "Divine Edition" gets you the game and digital artbooks, digital maps, the soundtrack in FLAC format, and a digital art pack. "Eternal Edition" gets you the game, all previously mentioned things, as well as most other games in the Divinity series.

How does this plays differently on console from the first game? I'm asking this because I couldn't get used to use a controller on the first game...

Does anyone know if Larian Studio is planning a DLC for DOS 2? In my opinion the story is not finished, and there are thousands of people willing to see a DLC of this game.
Does game review. doesn't get to large rewritten section of the game
I really like the game, but for me has one glaring issue (although I think it doesn't bug many people.) That being that during dialogue, NPC Mouths don't actually move. I know half the time you're zoomed out during dialogue to notice it but it really irks me.

Now coming on Nintendo switch
For someone who hates to spend a lot of time reading in video games, would you guys recommend this game? I'm a sucker for tactical combat, but it seems to me a player has to read a lot in this game whether it's character interaction or item descriptions and stats. I tried Darkest Dungeon twice, which is a different straight forward much more simpler turn based game, but was put off for that reason and couldn't get into it.
Timboron So most of the reading in the game is optional?
Timboron I see. Thank you!
What the hell was up with the strange pause at 1:49
Is it worth it on the switch? I’m stuck between this game and Hades and idk which one I should get for switch.
