- Music printed on the butt of one of the tortured souls in the 15th Century Hieronymus Bosch painting "The Garden of Earthly Delights" , Played on (What else?) Lute, Harp, and Hurdy-Gurdy by James Spalink. The melody is based on the transcription by Amelia Hamrick. The intro and outro employ the "Devil's Interval", and the last couple of measures are conjecture on my part. You could say that I just "pulled them out of my"-well, you know.....
Anyone here 600 years later and still listening to this?

@@odaxbi The second worst hellish punishment for a musician is to have some guy following you around begging you to play music that is printed on his butt.
You would need to work with someone else in order to play it. Kind of like the allegory of the long spoons in heaven and hell, where those in hell can't feed themselves since the spoons are too long, while those in heaven just feed each other.
Or having to play it reading it off a guy's butt and he happens to be very gassy
The idea to include the lute, harp, and hurdy-gurdy in the painting to suggest the instrumentation is a special bit of time travel

As a musician I thought that was a pretty good transcription, although there were a few bum notes.
I just listened to this on a speaker outside mixed with the sounds of singing birds and such and it blended so beautifully.

okay, but a nice little thing I've noticed is that the very first chord that's being played is constructed of an E and a B sounds. It creates the Devil's Tritone, which was banned from compositions in Medieval times for sounding too sinister and evil.
I just love the symbolism and crazy attention to detail in Bosch's paintings.

In those days writing music was called “pricking” or ”noting” and had the useage of a sexual pun, as well as pricking the parchment or paper with a sharp awl. Look closely at the barbed tongue, not a pen. As an aside, Shakespeare’s romantic comedy was originally spelt- Much ado about noting, but has been more recently bowderalised.

I don't know if Bosch had any musical composition experience, but if he didn't, imagine the conversation he had to have to get the sheet music to put into the painting.
It could be one of his apprentices that did that. Painting was very much a collaborative back then.

This painting has sparked many things in many people I suppose. The first time I saw it in an art book from the high school library, I was captivated. I haven't looked at it in many years until now & I'm thankful to have found this musical creation. It is beautiful, but also somber & actually conveys my emotions, state of mind & the sorrow I have for the judgement we are facing & will have to endure in the near future. Gorgeous interpretation. Using this to learn the melody, I should probably use the midi of the basic notes, but this is a lot more pleasing to the ear.
