This has to be one of the most intense musical compositions ever written, classical music has plenty of hard hitters, this one does not stop, and even if it's cheerfull it turns out to be a buildup to a heart breaking melody.
I newly learned about the story of this song. The surprising thing is, when I was a teenager, I also heard a beautiful guitar composition in my dream. My dream wasn't as complicated as Tartini's, there was a fall leaves moving on a laying down lady, as the lady closed her eyes, my sight angle was getting closer to her and a beautiful, extremely beautiful guitar composition was playing with an angelic reverb, the lady was either dead or sleeping but in front of everything, there was yellow leaves was moving in deadly peace. I also couldn't remember exactly how it was when I woke up and made a bad imitation of it like Tartini. Another thing I don't understand of this song is, it's 16 min long but for example in the dream I saw, the melodies were 16 bar long at most. It's impossible to hear very long composition in a dream I guess. So probably this 16 mins is also is like telling a frustration how he can't exactly remember that!
@Zababa YoMama how are you gonna say he probably broken ALL of the commandments. you're accusing the man of theft, murder, and cheating on a spouse💀💀💀 do you know how much commitment that would take
it actually was written after the devil supposedly visited him in a dream and the devil played the most beautiful sonata said "i can make you the best violinist ever but for a price...your soul after you die." and he said no, and when he woke up the next day he wrote down every note he remembered put he could never match the beauty and elegance of the devil's sonata and it drove him into insanity, this is his most famous piece of music ironically, such a beautiful piece of music with a dark past.
Didn't he listened to something different but sound like this? I was told the music he heard was like the best piece ever, but he couldn't remember it, but composed something similar.
8:37 "And they are dancing, the board floor slamming under the jackboots and the fiddlers grinning hideously over their canted pieces. Towering over them all is the judge and he is naked dancing, his small feet lively and quick and now in doubletime and bowing to the ladies, huge and pale and hairless, like an enormous infant. He never sleeps, he says. He says he’ll never die. He bows to the fiddlers and sashays backwards and throws back his head and laughs deep in his throat and he is a great favorite, the judge. He wafts his hat and the lunar dome of his skull passes palely under the lamps and he swings about and takes possession of one of the fiddles and he pirouettes and makes a pass, two passes, dancing and fiddling at once. His feet are light and nimble. He never sleeps. He says that he will never die. He dances in light and in shadow and he is a great favorite. He never sleeps, the judge. He is dancing, dancing. He says that he will never die."- Blood Meridian 1985

The piece I then composed is without a doubt my best, and I still call it “The Devil’s Sonata,” but it falls so far short of the one that stunned me that I would have smashed my violin and given up music forever if I could but have possessed it.

How nice to see you, my lord.

How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain!
