For many years now, ensemble Strada has been exploring Mediterranean music which continues to draw from medieval tradition. Strada's rendition of the few scores that have been handed down to us from Middle Ages, which they perform in that most excellent of medieval forums, "nella strada", in the street, makes their music aliveand colorful, and much like the music which rang through southern Europe from thirteenh to the sixteenth centuries.
The selection chosen for this recording were performed by Strada during the first Medievales de Québec festival in 1993 - music that the washerwoman and the court jester once dance to, music that cotribuited to magical atmosphere of the carnival. Every other eyars, for five days in mid-August, an unforgettable celebration of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages takes place against the charming backdrop of the walled city of Old Quebec, with its unique architecture, history and European atmosphere.
In may 1978, in Quebec City, Claude Bernatchez brought together a group of young musicians sharing a passion for Medieval and Renaissance music, and ensemble Anonymous was founded. Ever since, they have continued to bring alive the musical traditions of Medieval Europe with a fervor that never wanes. In seventeen years, through their creativity, their research and by deeping their understanding of history, ensemble Anonymous has created a large number of recitals on a variety of themes, as well as performances comnining music and theatre, which have won audiences in six countries in America and Europe. The pieces they hace chosen for this recording are dances from the middle Ages and Renaissence and are taken from their first two albums recorded in 1982 and 1985.
I wish you happy listening!

I love music like this because it brings out the humanistic side of history. When we talk about how people lived hundreds upon hundreds or even millennia ago it's hard to imagine these were real people who actually lived. Then when we listen to their music we get the same feelings and respond in the same way they would've. It almost brings a tear to my eye to be able to reconnect with our ancestors like this

Strange how listening to medieval music makes you realize those weren't the dark ages. Listening to their music makes me feel like those were the times when people are capable of enjoying life in the simplest ways, the best way they knew how and they can have joy in their heart whatever the circumstances. And I just love how danceable and wondrously joyful the music is without any allusion to sex, drugs or what have you.

Here in Catalonia, Spain, there's a popular collection of medieval music known as Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Red Book of Montserrat), dating back to the 1300s. In Galicia, another historical region, the Cantigas de Santa Maria were written between 1270 and 1282 consisting of 417 compositions honoring the Virgin Mary. Both masterpieces are proof of our precious cultural heritage and I hope someday we can enjoy this medieval Spanish music on this channel. Love it by the way.

I hitch-hiked from Toronto to Quebec City in 1993 for the medieval festival and camped behind some bushes in the middle of everything. The costumes, the performers, the sounds, and the music everywhere created a surreal atmosphere of joy and celebration, without the nasty plagues. I watched a group of sculptors carving blocks of limestone into parts of the window frame of a cathedral. I danced freely with many strangers. I was wearing a wearing a home-made Dominican friar's robe that I had brought, with a rope belt and pouch of loonies (Canadian gold-coloured $1 coins) and sometimes walked around asking for "alms for the poor" with a little wooden bowl. The commoners loved it

... ¿qué será?

Che bello il profumo del Medioevo ❤
I'm taking a music appreciation class right now and let me tell you, nothing like this is recommended listening for the era. Although I'm quite pleased that based on all of my hymn viewings that RUclips suggested this to me. It's really good vibing music.
Thank you, check the other videos of the channel, maybe you could find something interesting! 🌻
Mais pourquoi la musique médiévale est si peu connue ? Il y a des pépites !
Et puis c 'est joyeux et entraînant. Beaucoup de similitudes avec les musiques irlandaises et galloises
In my opinion there are many things in common with every traditional and folk song from european lands. The biggest mistake is to associate medieval music to classical music. Check this channel: ruclips.net/channel/UC3wH8RbspBqRhh7yaVXqO6A
Et même encore avec les musiques traditionnelles françaises.
Cette époque était d'une grande richesse
In fact, it was famine, disease and death 🙂
Хорошая подборка музыкальных произведений. Спасибо.
Some melodies, tunes and timbres came directly from Ancient Greece and Rome and this is great, such heritage to Medieval Europe.
Some melodies are very Romance way, you can even hear and imagine modern Romanian-Moldovanian folk music style, which means that Eastern Romance area got this musical tradition from Medieval time.
Pretty interesting that we hearing not any real folk motives and tunes from Germanic-Celtic musical way, cause the mainstream Medieval Musical Fashion of that time was dictated almost by Romance culture and traditions of such major countries like France, Spain, Italy.
You are right about the eastern folk music.
From medieval Germany, we have some of the most important manuscripts about medieval music, one of them is the Codex Buranus that contains more than 200 musical compositions. We also have Hildegard von Bingen, one of the most important musician, artist, philosopher and poetess of the humanity.
In the end, we have to talk about the Minnesänger's music, they were the German transposition of the French, Spanish and Italian troubadour.

Are there examples of the germanic celtic ways of music at the time?
How authentic is this really?
good question
I can only speak for the first piece by Arbeau. I've not onlr read his treatise but worked through it to reconstruct the dance steps and musical performance as closly as possible. We then compared the outcome with 3 other specialists. What this ensemble does came quite close to our ideas about it. But we will never know for sure...
I believe most of these songs come from actual Medieval Manuscripts. These are 100% Authentic.
Many Local Traditional European Festivals still play this kind of music actually. For example check out the "Fiesta Major" in Catalonia, Spain.
Let's party like it's 1099.

EDM music in 2021
Early dance medieval.
Wonderful music.
Dang... I remember when this sh¡t was poppin' back then in the streets of Novigrad with my homies
It was my teacher Alfonso Rincón (blessed his soul) who, in a lecture about Umberto Eco and The Name of the Rose, gave me a fantastic window to see medieval times. I thank him, professor Eco and you guys for this wonderful feeling.
From this extraordinary mixture of Celtic and Arabic all our music was generated. It is still well understood even today from the north of Scotland to the south of the Arabian peninsula. Music is peace and joy
Where does that leave traditional music from northern and eastern Europe, where the Celtic and Arabic influence was practically zero?
