The whole thing was set to fail. Look at what Bill Davis did to help launch the yota program. Gave them Dodge engine info. He paid the price. If toyota had not managed to wrangled Gibbs they would be out of the sport today as a dismal failure.

I truly miss Michael Waltrip Racing, Their paint schemes were the most badass through out the years and they were a team on the rise with so much potential competing for wins and championships and I truly believe that if spingate never happened They would be one of the top teams today Up there with Joe Gibbs Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske and Stewart Haas Racing
How about the whole issue with 2007 Daytona 500- and the 'foreign substance' in MW's carb? That was the start of their troubles- suspending crew chief and GM- and $100k fine- 100 owner and driver points- the 55 car had negative points (only time in history) for about 4 months. How could you have missed that one?
Oh man I can’t wait to watch this! MWR, or what WAS MWR isn’t far from my house and I used to go over there all the time when it was open. Hell they had the McDowell Texas crash car out for the public to see.
Another thing: Like him or not, most of Michael's employees would tell you he was the BEST team owner ever. He treated his employees with respect. I've seen a ton of comments from his people talking about how much they miss being at the shop, and him being their boss.
Met Michael several times at Daytona during media day in the late 90’s...our son was 7-8 yrs old at the time and Michael was one of the few guys who actually would get down to his level by kneeling to talk to him which I thought was very nice...he was very personable and always made time to talk to anyone who approached him...

I got a chance to visit them back in the day and it was a wondeful experience. It was a much better behind the scenes view than any other team shop! I was sad to hear they were gone after I recently got back into the sport.
What I found ridiculous was that they fined them for Vickers' pitting, there was ABSOLUTELY no rule against it at the time. They fined them anyway. This is why NASCAR has gone down the shitter. They make rules whenever they feel like it to help the drivers they want to help. They were pissed their pretty boy Jeffy wasn't in the Chase, and this was a way to put him back in without opening up another spot. It's BS! Like MWR or not, they did nothing wrong with Vickers pitting to help a team-mate. Other teams had done it a hundred times before. They NEVER got penalized. Just proves they did it to get Jeffy into the Chase.

MWR was THE place to work right next to Hendrick Motorsports back in 2007-2008. I tried getting in but never did. I been in that shop a bunch back then to get parts and what not and it was an impressive shop to say the least
I was at the Richmond race when Spingate happened. Bowyer when he did it on purpose because he was told prior that Gordon was in the Chase ad Truex wasn't and with their feud at the time he didn't want Gordon in the Chase. Also he said that JR got into the back of him and spun him out in a post race interview and the video evidenced proved he as lieing
Marcy you must be talking about lil jr, I been a fan of sr and going to races since 84, very few times I seen him get lapped and he didn't need a reason to spin you other then you next in line or in the way, dale didn't need cautions or lucky dogs or stay on track and they give you laps. He usually led the race or was real close to it. Of course that's back when its was real racing now its just punk kids putting on entertainment. Dale would scare all these kids these days

MWR had the most fan-friendly race shop to visit, the layout was great and there was lots to see and do. One of the most interesting parts of the tour was seeing the 00 Toyota Camry up-close that Micheal McDowell wrecked while qualifying at Texas in 2008.
What happened to Reutimann by Waltrip is absolutely abysmal. Want a good video about a driver that should have had another chance. Age isn’t a factor in that family, dad Buzzie is still racing at 80 and winning against them all.
Even though Michael Waltrip was a lousy driver, he always had amusing commericals. He and Kenny Walllace were a funny pair. They weren't going to win a lot of races but corporate America liked them because they would always make the funniest commercials. I guess that's Waltrip's real legacy.

I always thought the penalties were bs as teams manipulate the points all the time by moving back spots or putting whether it’s with teammates or deals with the smaller teams. These penalties ultimately killed a pretty competitive team when they were on the come up and chased away sponsors from nascar, with how few competitive cars there are i’m sure nascar regrets this

If you were to tell me that in 5 years in 2007 that the team that was failing to make races nearly every race and could only make races with Dale Jarrett’s past champions provisional I’d of laughed. If it wasn't for Rob Kaufman paying the bills it would have shut down sooner than it did.
