  • Ty Norris was a loyal lieutenant for Dale Earnhardt Sr. at DEI, serving as Executive Vice President and General Manager. Hear how Dale Earnhardt laid out his vision and what kind of leader he was as Ty assisted him in building the organization.
After Dale’s death in 2001, Ty explains why he described the company as splintered and who he thinks could have saved it. Dale Jr. weighs in on when he lost faith in DEI following his father’s vision.
Hear the story of what Dale Jr. did when he and teammate Michael Waltrip hadn’t been paid in months and how it ultimately led to Ty’s dismissal from the organization after being offered a bad deal.

This makes me appreciate Kelly and her strength so much more. Not only, helping Dale grieve and keep his career on track, but grieving herself, raising her family, and helping build JR Motorsports into the powerhouse it is. All the while having someone like Theresa trying to tear them down and be the very antithesis of what they needed. I hope one day, Kelly finds a spot in the HoF right next to her father and brother.

@@ATK10155 Teresa is something else and it's sad hearing this story of how DEI was going to nosedive and that nosedive happened in 2005. Dale Jr almost never recovered from that if it wasn't for Rick Hendrick spending a lot of money where it was embarrassing to be a part of JR Nation (and I thought will never get to enjoy fruits of my loyalty with another 2004 like run). The floodgates opened after that 2014 Daytona 500 win and especially the first win out of two at Pocono. Really back to back years where it should have been cup championship seasons (like in 2004). I was too young to remember the magic of the 2004 run.
As a Chase Elliot fan, I was watching last season before Bubba Wallace pulled off his stunt with the garage pull being a noose at Dega. Thanks to that, I missed out on a championship run. I didn't watch for two seasons after Dale Jr retired and I always like Chase Elliot. Elliot is two rounds away and hopefully he can overcome the Georgia Sports Curse.

"Caring about Dale Jr IS caring about you"......Ty, you hit the nail on the head when you told Teresa that, and it was true. God only knows how DEI would've turned out, had that witch treated Dale Jr ( and everyone else for that matter ) with HONOR & RESPECT. But it's painfully obvious that witch doesn't know the meaning of those 2 words. Personally, I don't see how she can look at herself in the mirror. The decline of NASCAR: Dale Sr. dying; CoT; Gordon retiring, Dale jr. retiring....those 4 sequence of events destroyed NASCAR and it will NEVER get o the height of popularity like it was from Mid-90's to early/mid 2000's. Never! Then throw in the "heat" races and that was it...totally done! They way the sport is now bubble wrapped and cream puff level there wont be any more rivalries or drivers u love to hate. The way the sport is handled now they even made Bristol boring to watch. Whoever came up with the idea of heat racing should be fired. Also, the cars practiaclly drive themselves now..they removed the human element..its like a spaceship cockpit in the car now.

Dale sr. brought me to this sport and there was often no more, just reading about another race win. Later watched some highlights and since late 90s full races. That might play into it, but you've also have to take into account the whirlwind life of a NASCAR driver, and then multiply that by 1000 when it comes to Dale Jr. and his career, on and off the track. To say the concussions have little impact on recall is to belittle their impact on daily life and beyond, but the constant media responsibilities, sponsor obligations and appearances, being a rockstar away from the track, and then having to perform on the track for 36 weeks out of the year for 20+ years, not including having to find time to have a personal life and start a family, I can only imagine how things may or may not stick. And being sponsored by Budweiser is bound to lead to some forgetfulness!

That right there tells you she is hurting. I sometimes think people forget this and expected her to be as strong as SR. This interview/podcast is the most revealing that I've seen about a story in the NASCAR circles in the 21st century. For most of the last 15 years especially, I feel like the media narrative has been controlled to just promote, promote and promote the sport, much to the sport's detriment. I really appreciate the honesty from Norris especially. He helped open up the dialogue.
These issues that were discussed on this podcast, especially when things came to a head in 2004, now make a whole lot more sense to me. With the speed that Dale Jr. had at certain races, he showcased a car that could've won the title. In others (Las Vegas and there were more, I'm forgetting off of the top of my head), they missed the setup so badly. It makes perfect sense. Truly amazing that he was in contention to win the championship late in '04 despite all of the internal issues within the organization.
I believe that the serious injuries to Steve Park in September 2001 at Darlington also really hurt DEI. He was a well-liked and respected racer who had improved rapidly in less than a two-year span. The team would've been much more of a force had he not gotten hurt. Instead, he is never the same racer, and the 1 car turns into a part-time ride that John Andretti (a journeyman at that point, but a good racer in his prime; RIP John) runs sparingly in '04.
If Park doesn't get hurt, you likely get the best version of him, Pennzoil stays on as long as he's there, and DEI has a better chance to resolve some of the internal problems within the organization.

Right?! It would be like Parkland about JFKs assassination instead a dark ending but a feature length film of before and after Dales passing following 2001 and the following years...
But again I don’t think the Earnhardt family would approve the story... just like that ESPN TV movie of Dale back in ‘04... and it’s still on RUclips! Weird...

Such a shame but I love this guys mindset and can relate so much. Growing and recognizing toxic situations and knowing your worth is a beautiful thing and it took a lot of similar (nowhere near as big) situations like this.

Earnhardt might be the most loved name in NASCAR but Teresa sure as hell isn't. She ruined a good part of Dale Jrs career.

I believe the same holds true for Steve Park. A boy, (back then, of course) with raw talent who just needed a chance. Dale Sr had accrued a lot of professional capital and was willing to pay it forward to help the right driver who was willing to do the work.

This story doesn't surprise me. I was on the production crew that built the Dale Earnhardt tribute concert at the speedway in Daytona. Although the labor was paid, all the companies that provided things like the staging, the lighting, the sound and video had to sue Teresa to get their money. Don't know if they ever got paid.
