15:04 The Charlotte test is my favorite scene in the movie. 20+ years ago, I used to live about 10 mins from CMS and on cool nights in the spring, if the wind was blowing just right, you could hear them testing for the All Star race and the 600. The SOUND in that scene is off the charts good.

Rush is about the rivalry between Ferrari’s Niki Lauda and McLaren’s James Hunt, and about the scandalous, dangerous, glamorous, and reckless indulgence life of an F1 driver of the 70s, and about the almost lethal injuries of Lauda and his unbelievable comeback in the 1976 F1 World Championship. Dale, your Dad appearing in BASEketball was one of the highlights of the whole movie, and the fact he was willing to do that, considering the context and humor of the movie, made him I think an even bigger legend then he already was! I love Days of Thunder. But the thing that cracks me up is how banged up the cars get racing at Daytona. In reality, Cole would have been luck to finish only 3 laps down let a lone winning the race. The areo was toast on that car. Also, riding the wall that far he would have gotten passed by half the field. Even still, fun movie! Welcome back Dale!

Even though I grew up helping my uncle with his dirt late models in the 70s and 80s, I'm a drag racer at heart, I'm also the biggest Dale Sr fan that you never want to meet! Every year on Saturday night before the Daytona 500, my wife, daughter and I watch Days Of Thunder, and the replay of the 2000 Winston 500 (my favorite win). My wife is still a Jeff Gordon fan and our daughter still loves Jr. These days, we also watch all 3 Cars movies with our twin grandsons earlier on Saturday. With that said, I can completely identify with Robert Duval as Harry Hogg. I talk to ALL of my vehicles all the time. I whisper secrets to my Freightliner when we're on the road together (my wife named her "The Mistress" years ago), but, what applies most here is that I definitely talk to my race car. We talk a lot in the shop and I can't even tell you everything that we talk about. What I can tell you is that when we're in the water box, I always say "c'mon baby, do it for me one more time". Her usual reply is "let's do this". Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose and sometimes, she gets hurt. I don't like it when I hurt her because then, I have to deal with my wife and daughter asking "What the HELL did YOU do to MY race car?!?" and explain to the crying 3 year old grandsons that I'll fix her. The boys love hanging out in the shop though with us though!

What i really loved about days of thunder was actually how it parallels the history of nascar. While the movie was made between the rivalry between tim richmond and dale sr. , I thought it actually paralleled the rivalry of jeff gordon and dale sr.
Jeff's history in motor racing actually paralleled cole and tim. All the characters started first in open wheel racing, but lacked the financial backing to compete in open road indy or formula class racing. All of them were bless to have a very successful nascar team take a chance on them. All of them were very quick and instinctive drivers.

There is no excuse, no excuse, to not have seen "Stroker Ace". If you are a rookie in NASCAR or it's your first job working in the stock car industry than it should be required to see "Stroker Ace".

I'm pretty surprised that the whole "talking to your car" thing isn't more common.
Yes, it's a machine, but you trust that machine with your life and in doing so, you grow a connection to your car, which ends up giving you an INCREDIBLE sense of what the car is doing at any point in time. When a driver asks himself the question "I wonder if it will stick this turn at this speed", he isn't really asking himself, he's asking the car and the feeling he gets back will often be accurate to what happens in that turn. When Cole punches the throttle through the wreck at the end, he was trusting that BOTH Harry and the car were with him and let go of his fear. The car hurt Cole when he crashed into Rowdy and Cole felt like he couldn't trust the car anymore (HIS car) and blew the motor on his return race.
It seems as though Cole basically has a confidence problem, but the rental car scene with Rowdy as well as the angry cab driver chase with Nicole Kidman both show that Cole does NOT have a confidence problem, he just doesn't trust HIS car anymore. The most obvious clue to this is in the dialogue between Cole and Harry when Cole goes to visit Harry to ask to prep Rowdy's car for him for Daytona. In those two scenes, the biggest bombshells are Harry's line "..you were afraid if you didn't get out of that that car right quick, you'd die" and Cole's reply "I'm not getting in my car, I'm gettin in Rowdy's". Cole uses Rowdy's financial predicament to push himself to get back behind the wheel and find a way back from his broken place to his old self and NASCAR.
The scene where Cole smashes into Russ Wheeler post race also shows his complete disconnection with HIS car. He destroyed his car so he wouldn't have to drive it again, Russ was just the opportunity he needed. I wrote my final English paper in high school on Days of Thunder and you wouldn't believe how deep that movie can be.
I got a 95% on that paper btw and pretty sure that is the only time a racing movie has been turned in as a serious paper in cinematics at my school XD.

Every event in Days of Thunder was inspired by an actual event or story from actual races and drivers. The filming of the movie is it's own insane story. To get the race footage, the camera cars had to actually pass tech inspection and qualify for the races, including the final scenes of the movie at Daytona, which were shot during the actual 1990 Daytona 500. According to Rick Hendrick, Jeff Gordon was actually supposed to drive the #46 car and not the #24 car, but the number 46 belongs to Paramount Pictures.
