  • It is Sunday, so I am going to stay busy doing some odd jobs around the homestead. Jobs that I will enjoy doing. I am going to try to braze cast aluminum, setup the game cameras, cook ribs, and fix a seized up top link for the case tractor.

Take the hinge to a vocational tec school with a welding program . The one I went to begged the locals to bring in projects for the more advanced students to practice on. I welded a ton of farming items !!!!!!!!! FOR FREE

I worked in aerospace for 38 years much of the time certifying welders on cast aluminum. It is one of the hardest things to weld well. Every applicant said they could do it, few were actually able to get certified. Not an easy task. Maybe a local shop can TIG weld it for you.

Your pond is so beautiful with the autumn trees surrounding it and the ducks floating by. But oh, those ribs! Bet they were finger lickin good! And Evan, don't forget to fix the hinge on the trailer door. With his year's abundance of red peppers I made a red pepper and tomato soup and a red pepper hummus. Both delicious!

That's one craft I wish I knew something about. Absolutely no experience with a torch to know how much of this gas or that gas or even how to cut with one. Interesting watching you try your hand at brazing that kind of material. even though it didn't work, it look like you had the general idea of it.

Good morning Even, when repairing the hing on the lath door, try J-B Weld, it works well, and on the top link, try stress relief by screwing threaded end into link untill it hits a rough spot then place link on a hard object such as an anvil and hit with hammer as you turn link, it will reform threads . Good luck

I didn't see any grease fittings on the toplink. It would be quick to drill and tap each side for a zerk and you would never have to worry about it again. And once-a-year grease will go a long way on a toplink.

Before fabricating a hinge, try one more time. When brazing, you need a slightly carbonizing flame with a tiny feather of unburned gas at the centre. It looks like you have a neutral or possibly oxidizing flame. Also preheat the whole casting and let it cool as slowly as possible, perhaps in the oven. I haven't brazed aluminium but I guess its the same as cast iron.

Completely get the idea of working on things you want to vs. things you have to, when you need a bit of a break. I am the same way. Speaking of break, I think I would be prone to try to drill, pin and use epoxy on that lathe cover. It will not be under too much load, of course, just vibration.

Love this video of "piddling" it is amazing the amount of little jobs that get done on a day like this. Having the ribs to eat during the work time sure helps too. They looked delicious. If you and Holly like stuffing (I mean the kind you have with turkey or chicken), my Mom used to buy pork ribs when I was a little girl and she would cut them into portions for 4 of us, not sure how many ribs that would be, then she would stuff them with a bread stuffing, roll them up and tie them. She would bake them in the oven till they were tender and nicely browned. A great Sunday meal with vegetable on the side. As I re read this I was wondering if she might have cooked them in a covered roaster...not sure. This was more than 70 years ago. My how time flies. Have a Blessed day.

they make a Thread-File which is indispensable when it comes to farm equipment they are a square rod with thread pitches milled into them on different size thread pitches and then the file teeth are cut into those thread pitch grooves .... I have one in metric but it would really help you on things like that top link any buggered up threads can be repaired ( more or less) with one of these files ! obviously if the threads have been hit with a hammer and the peeks of the threads are mashed it will not help replace those peaks... but it will clean up the groves just like a die.... and that is what you need !

Evan, you might try a good epoxy in your hinge. Two years before my Dad retired, a freak cold snap hit and ended up freezing up our F12 Tractor, cracking the head of the engine. My Dad sent me to garage to retrieve a tube of a product called Glues-All. He smeared a goodly amount on both sides of the crack and weighted it down into place with some steel we had laying around. It sat for a couple of days, put coolant in it, fired it up and we used it for the next two years. It was still glued together when my oldest brother let it sit out in the weather with no cover on the stack and it ceased the motor. Epoxies are even tougher today.
