  • It is the start of Firewood Season on the homestead. I am going to split some firewood, that I cut up last winter. Then I want to get everything ready to start heating our log home with wood heat. I get the firewood rack filled up and kindling split so we are ready for cold weather.

In my dads obit we listed his hobbies as hunting, fishing and cutting wood. He loved to take out his chainsaw, a jug of water, lawn chair and Field and Stream magazine. He would cut for a few hours then sit a bit, drink some water and read. My childhood home had two stoves, one was a Sierra insert and the other he made himself. Waking up to the smell of a fire and nothing gets you warm quicker than backing up to a hot fire then walking with straight legs because you got your jeans to hot... LOL. Gosh I miss him.

Growing up my father bought at least 4 cord of wood, and I can remember when he bought more, not split. It had to age and before the snow fell we had to move as much as we could inside or closer to the house.
Splitting was fun once I was strong enough, and then we got a splitter.
Still had to split the kindling by hand, or wanted to.
    Real good memories

I remember doing that, too. We cut ours, though, I can't imagine Dad ever spending money to buy wood when he could cut it himself, lol. When snow season approached, We'd load up our homemade wagon, pull it around back, and unload it into the basement. Load after load, up and down the steps. Sure was nice NOT to have to trudge through snow and sleet to the woodpile to get wood, though!
Eventually, we began stacking it in the garage, instead. YAY! No stairs!
Learned all my best profanity from Dad trying to get our 2 persnickety McCulloch chainsaws started for the first time every year, lol.
Good memories. I still go right back then whenever I smell fresh cut Ash wood.

The first two houses I lived in were heated with firewood. The first one had a large stove in the basement that would burn just about anything, but later we moved and had one of the inserts like you described, but before any specific EPA regulations were involved. This insert would still burn just about anything and had an exhaust recirculating system that would reburn some of what would otherwise have gone up in the smoke. You could almost boil water on the top of the insert and we used that fact for a jury rigged humidifier by leaving a large pot of water on it whenever the fire was going. Mom and Dad (mostly Mom...) kept that small house way warmer than my oversized body and teenager metabolism could tolerate, so I spent a lot of time outside splitting the firewood they burned. We didn't have a powered splitter, we had me, my brothers, and a series of splitting mauls ranging from 9 to over 12 lbs. I got to where I could make the oak fly with a 9lb maul one handed by the time I was old enough to drive. I *almost* miss those days, but am about to move to a house that has quite a lot of woods as part of it. The house I'm buying no longer has a fireplace insert, so I'm not going to be burning wood this winter, but if I end up building a smaller version of your pole barn, I'll probably do the same thing and put in a wood stove. There will be plenty of deadfall if nothing else.

For the people concerned about the 🔥 wood being stacked

Might be an issue, they will be going through it pretty

Dead Branches that you have in the woods would make perfect kindling and make a lot of it. I found a very old hope chest at a yard sale and converted it to a kindling chest ....then closed the hood and it just fits in anywhere you put it. Food for thought.

I live in urban Seattle and have heated my home only with wood since I installed my wood stove in 1987.
There are a number of commercial outfits near to me which leave bins of scrap wood out for those who wish to use it. That's mostly dimensional lumber scraps ---1x, 2x and 4x. A nearby lumber yard often has scraps cuts from larger lumber they prepare for customers.
Mostly I haul scrap wood to my home in my van, but sometimes I will use my nine cubic foot wheelbarrow for that.
Usually all I need to do is to cut dimensional lumber to suitable length on my table saw.
I have some wood storage under cover of my house, but much of it is stacked in the back yard protected from rain by plastic tarps.
I'm a firebug and I never tire of stoking the wood stove and be rewarded by heat for my home.

Good afternoon all! One of the gratifying aspects of today’s work was that a jumbled pile in front of what you needed to use was split and piled out of the way, leaving a really nice clean area to work through. It’s like us cleaning fencerow - goes from a chaotic mess and becomes a clean fence. Really feels good. Nice sunset too!

I also enjoy splitting and stacking wood at the property. Weird huh? haha... I also prefer to push mow my lawn at home, even though it's a corner lot and the largest in my neighborhood. Just a good repetitive way to zone out and free my mind. I find it funny how I push mow mine, yet almost everyone else in the neighborhood has a rider. lol . ... To save time stacking, then stacking into the truck, then stacking again, perhaps you should stack on some wood pallets and then just grab a bundle with your loader with forks and move it. Another RUclips channel (Hometown Acres) has a great process of managing firewood using those metal bins you often find holding large plastic tubs of liquid. I also like their curb-side firewood sales idea. Don't know if you want to sell any wood, but nice idea if so.

Using the log splitter is not cheating. It is working smarter, not harder. As you age you will need to find a way to work more easily. do they still make wood heaters that are a large box that puts off a large amount of heat on very little wood? When we lived in Oklahoma thirty two years ago they were very poplar there. That sounds like a good one for the shop.

Great video Evan I agree its relaxing. The last two years I cheated was able to purchase inexpensive 2x3x3 debarked square logs from a paper mill and all I have to do is cut them in half and I'm ready to go. I watched a guy last year on RUclips that build reverse fires in his stove. He put the logs on the bottom, then the kindling in the middle and then a little paper on top for a starter. It is so much easier to light and burns great.
