Not touched by the christian aspect of it (albeit I can like it a lot aesthetically, like say Årabrot) but quite liked what seems to be some kind of dark metal take on southern-gothic (a genre rooted in christian faith, so, OK). Well, something interesting to dig here, curious to know more on these guys, and Ichabod is a great songtitle too (remind me of that great Th' Legendary Shack Shakers' song).
Ichabod is biblical Hebrew, means "No glory." Refers to a passage where people were doing what was right in their own eyes in God's glory departed.
Can you think of any bands that sounds similar to this that you would recommend?
@@GuyGeorgeful yup, I knew Ichabod's meaning, Ichabod actually was my previous pseudo here, I liked it meant no glory and the connections to american gothic via Sleepy Hollow.
For "similar" bands (not really sounding exactly the same but maybe more in a same aesthetical family/spiritual mood) you could try the album Mystagogue by Jarboe And the Sweet Meat Love & Holy Cult. Jarboe was the female vocalist for early Swans records (one of the greatest bands ever) and has a rich solo carreer and a lot of nice featurings with other bands, also a record with Neurosis (her album Blackmouth is excellent too).
Or maybe Karyn Crisis' Gospel of the witches, famous for being the vocalist in the (great) band Crisis. Maybe also Tairrie B. from Manhole/Tura Satana/My Ruin had a project called The LVRS with her boyfriend. Or even no-wave idol Lydia Lunch, who had solo records with guitarists like Cypress Grove or with The Birthday Party's Rowland S Howard (Shotgun wedding most notably), she also had a band with Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon named after author Harry Crews. Also her band/album 13.13 and the music she made with Gallon Drunk.
For more metal stuff, maybe US Christmas or Across Tundras, Blood & Time .. But these bands do not really sound like Scarlet Oath, this is more a list of stuff fitting the southern gothic vibe of this band/song but with their own very specific approch. I don't know if I ever heard something sounding exactly the same. Hope you'll still enjoy them, tho.
I'll add finnish experimental doom band Unholy, because I just read Scarlet Oath have many great doom influences like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Tristania, and others, and this made me think about Unholy. But no southern gothic vibes here, only cult leftfield doom-metal.

I'm especially fond of Virgin Black. I also like Paramecium and Necromance. Obviously these bands have a doom influence and are Christian. I have recently discovered this kind of music, however, and I'm quite sure there's a lot out there I'm not aware of. If you have any additional suggestions I will check out those as well. Doom, symphonic, gothic-type stuff is always nice. Distorted male vocals with opera-like female vocals (or even chanting sort of stuff as with some of this Jarboe) is such a good combination. They don't have to be Christian of course but I don't want something anti-Christian.

This is pop with distortion. Not metal.
I would love to hear more old school death metal style Christian metal. It's very few and far between.
I don't like it.... I think their trying hard 🤔 and trying to do the whole black metal theme but Christian.... the timing is off and it's just super slow. I guess if your into it 🤷 good for you but the band needs more work especially the singer in the beginning was off too. Could be decent. Drummer and instrumentals were good Could be better though if pointed in the right direction.
They're Gothic doom metal (not everything tremolo picked is black metal). The lady singing in the beginning is awesome and I wish there was more. And when timing is 'off' with level of talent they're more than likely pulling and pushing the beat for effect.
Your critique sounds like you're really into over produced click track technical metal of some sort, which is cool for you, but I was blown away by this band.
I guess it's just not my type of metal genre. I listen to more metal core genre like as I lay dying or war of ages 🤷♂️ but that's pretty awesome that you know what your talking about when it comes to this type of metal. 🤘 pretty bad ass, but it's just not for me 😂
@@dylanmartin7731 Of course no one should fault you for not liking a song. I would politely disagree that they are "trying hard" to do black metal and be Christian. There are several others who have already done that, and it wouldn't exactly be pioneering. I would say I often feel bands are trying too hard when they make black metal and just fill the video with blasphemy and tired tropes from the occultic world. But on the other hand I am partially sympathetic to your point because, I suppose, anyone who is zealous for a particular ideological projection could be characterized as "trying hard."
@@scripturethroughancienteye1509 when I ment by "try hard" is that their trying to bring something like you said some other bands already try to bring, now I don't know of their a new band or they've been around for a while, but listening to them is like eating a vegan burger. Everything there but it lacks taste. Maybe if they had better products it would sound better 🤷♂️ example I couldn't hear the singing in the beginning and when I could its still silent. If they're a new band that's understandable, but if they've been around for a while then they'll need better production. Also if people are into this type of music props for them and I hope that this band gets big or gets to where they want to be, but there's not really a shock value for me. Like putting this up with cradle of filth since they're kinda in the same category of genre, they don't bring anything new. I'll have to listen to some of their other stuff, but if their music is like this than it's something that's hard to get into. Props for people who listen to this, but it's not the same and it falls short. My big thing is production in the music needs work. It felt all over the place vocally wasn't doing it for me, but major potential for the instrumental 🤘 vocally for the clean singer she could be in a prog metal band and the dude doing the grunts and growls would be sick in a metal core band, but it sounded like they tried 🤷♂️

i enjoyed the marriage of doom + elements of black... music was really good. the solo was really weak tho... male vocals - awesome. females vocals - terrible. would i listen to it? absolutely. would i pay for it? no. would i rec it to my secular, unsaved buds? maybe another year of practice/experience, replace the female vocalist, absolutely.
