Treasure Planet & Atlantis The Lost Empire were 2 Disney films that were both surprisingly dark & criminally underrated.
For real. I'm glad they're great some recognition. Better late than never I guess.
Don't act like they were flawless, because they were definatly not. There is a reason these movie were some of Disneys biggest failures
I think of both (along with the (admittedly lighter in tone) Lilo and Stitch) as part of a sci fi trinity of disney animated films. I like them all, even though L&S was the only really successful one.

@@headofcosmospictures1232 They didn’t follow a formula, also they didn’t get nearly as much marketing as Disney’s other projects. Treasure planet has flaws, but so does other Disney stuff that has done better
Treasure Planet is my absolute favorite Disney movie and hold a special place in my heart. It's one of the few movies that I can watch that makes me feel something on a deep level. Them having Leland Hawkins leave instead of be killed makes Jim and his story so much relatable since a lot of kids including myself we're growing up without their father at the time the movie was released. Even today, I find that I can relate to Jim Hawkins more than any other character. Not to mention the fact that Captain Amelia left quite the impression on my young developing mind.

Corporate greed caused the tv series and sequel to be canned... This and many other reasons for greed to not exist... But some script got leaked where someone made a video on the sequel

My college professor, Mario Menjivar was a rough animator for Jim Hawkins. He told us there were nights where he'd kinda come home depressed, because he had to act depressed while animating Jim.

@@lagrandioso1456 animators are actors as well. It's kind9f like method acting in a way but the one people see is the puppet/character.
@@Samu_Raaay Its also a little bit similar to motion capture acting as well considering that the animators would also need to study how specific movements would need to be done.

The script for the sequel can be found online and after seeing it, I am forever crushed that we never got it. The whole thing looked like it would have been an awesome follow up to Treasure Planet. I know some people want to convince Disney to do it now but I don't know if I trust Disney to handle the sequel at this point compared to if it had come out years ago.

It would be kinda cool if Disney could pass the movie to a better more equipped studio. I love Disney but the movies now feel lazy in their storytelling
The fact that Brian Murray has passed and cant reprise his role as one of the greatest animated characters ever is criminal.
I know. What's even worse is that Disney made NO public statement regarding his passing whatsoever for obvious and biased reasons. That's just sickening. I mean, he even deserves to be declared a Disney Legend just for his vocal performance on John Silver, if you ask me.
I know!!! For shame Disney!!! For shame that they didn't acknowledged Brian Murray's death!!! 😰 He did a fantastic job as Silver!!!

movie is what helped me come to grips with not having a dad as a kid. Still holds a special place.
Me as well, unfortunately. And even to this day this movie is my biggest comfort for that
Disney's "Treasure Planet". It had a good premise. And I liked what they were trying to do, but I think it was a decade too early for the mainstream to get into that. Same with "Atlantis". I think that if it was released today, with anime and it's influences more prevalent, it might've had better success.
You know that feeling when watching or playing an old movie or video game and think to yourself “I remember it better” well… i just watched this movie and had the exact opposite to that feeling, it’s so much better than I remember as a kid, such an underrated movie

I prefer that Jim's parent left as it helped me process my own father not being in my life and I'm sure it helped others deal with similar familial issues.
I remember as a kid seeing the commercials giving away the entire movie plot and being uninterested in seeing it in theaters as a result. But later seeing it on DVD, we loved it! It’s one of the few family favorites to this day alongside Lilo & Stitch and Atlantis.
Imagine the reality where Treasure Planet and Atlantis have entire themed parks built around them at Disney, instead of the mockery they turned Star Wars into.
If enough of us dream it, we can make it real.

This movie was the first thing I watched when Disney Plus launched.
When talking about Jim’s personal progression you missed the comment about his “eye mask”. It’s talked about extensively in the director’s commentary

One of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, the art and drawings were just on another level at the time they made it, I lost count how many times i watched it as a kid

FINALLY! You guys finally do a 107 facts videos on the most underrated Disney movie of all time (and space lol) I'm so happy that this movie is starting to get more recognition, appreciation, attention and love and I'm glad I discovered it when I did because I know I missed out on something, Jim is now my favorite character and first ever cartoon crush, and I swear that I WILL watch this movie with my mother someday. (Once we find it on a streaming service that's not Disney+ and we don't have to pay for it, or maybe we'll just rent it on RUclips) But again thank you Freditrader for making this list.

@@cimalasheffield5908 I think some people have a problem with Jim Hawkins being so angsty. Not helping matters is that the CGI whales look out of place.

I'm so sad that Treasure Planet was going to have a featured ride but was cancelled. 😭 Also would have been so good to see the sequel. Willem Dafoe as a villain would have been freaking amazing.

I'm absolutely on love with this move. 2022 has been pretty rough for me so it's been my comfort movie. Really is something that I think I remembered worse than it actually is. So sad this movie doesn't have enough merch and recognition.

Gosh it is so sad this movie didn’t do well when it was released!! 😢 this movie is fantastic!! One of my absolute favorites as a kid. My top 3 had been, treasure planet, Atlantis, and the iron giant. None of them did well in theater 😅
With the way it's going, Kingdom Hearts might see a Treasure Planet world.
This is literally my favourite movie of all time!
I find it interesting that so many people want a treasure planet and Atlantis live action remakes.
I think, the reason why Treasure Planet and Atlantis bombed was, that they were targeting teenagers (especially teenage boys) with them. But teenagers at the time thought Disney movies were uncool, and the movies were too violent to apeal to families with smaller children. Disney later managed to get their teenage audience with some Disney Channel shows.
Like Liv and Maddie.
It's interesting to think how similar this and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were. Both were science fiction films that utilized 3D mixed with 2D. Both, in universe, were quite advanced in terms of technology albeit in some sort of alternate timeline deal. And both flopped in its initial release but gained quite a following later on.
My favourite part of the movie is that it totally blew my mind after loteral decades

Treasure planet is one of the most underrated films that watch since I was a child, and The 20 anniversary is gonna be bloomed! Plus I wanna live action Treasure Plant adaptation flim, and no that will never happen and look what Disney did this to remix’s, but all I want is just trash and putting to be notice again and to be repaired in the TV show or a feature film in the future it deserve better.
I love treasure planet! Hence the profile picture but also I’m obsessed. I ended up cosplaying as Jim at cons. ::) it’s such a good movie and it deserves more attention. I’m sure if they re released the movie in theaters it would def have more of a following.

Fun fact: A Treasure Planet reference does show up in Kingdom Hearts 3! It's those treasure spheres that you shoot when you're riding around in open space. They look exactly like the chrome sphere that Jim uses to unlock the treasure map and they twist and then the same way too.

Favorite movie of mine is Treasure Planet. As for it being in Kingdom Hearts, I would love that but I stuck to fan comics and stories instead.

One of my most cherished video game memories was playing the ps2 game treasure planet. I'd wake up at 2 or 3 in the dead of night, play for an hour or 2, then go back to bed for a bit b4 school. Idk why it was so special but I remeber the immersion and adventure I felt.

I really really really wanted to have Treasure Planet in Kingdom Hearts! Surfing through space with the awesome glider, the plotttwist, the change of heart. Who wouldn't like to see sora and riku doing it.
When I first played Kingdom Hearts 2 (was my first game) Treasure Planet was immediatly in my mind. Sadly I don't think that's gonna happen... It is infact my favourite Disney Movie.

I remember watching both Atlantis and treasure planet when they were in theaters. I'll admit that it took me awhile to really enjoy them.
oh man, i had no idea a sequel had been so close. with defoe as the bad guy no less. oh what could have been.

Well, like he said, it had to compete with the Harry Potter and 007 movies. What he didn’t mention was the fact that Disney also happened to have released The Santa Clause 2 only a few weeks prior. That means they intentionally timed Treasure Planet’s release to that it would have to compete with their own Christmas family movie at the height of the Christmas season. On top of that, it was only in theaters for 3 weeks. That’s ridiculously short for a kids film. Most people seem to agree that Disney intentionally sabotaged the film as an excuse to shut down the 2D animation department and quit using the Deep Canvas software, which while very impressive was also apparently very expensive to use at the time.
@@CJ-442 Yet Disney made Princess and the Frog, which sadly only did ok because it was released just before James Cameron's Avatar. Man if Princess and the Frog didn't underperform, Disney would take animate for seriously and not make so many Live action remakes.

107 Mortal Kombat Facts You Should Know
t this movie deserves an animated series based on Jim going into the Navy becoming a trainee then cadet and eventually over the course of maybe a couple of seasons becoming completely disillusioned with the empire due to the all the corruption and incompetence nepotism and violence he sees in the Navy and with dealing with the nobility and with colonialism and eventually become either a freedom fighter or some kind of pirate
I watched treasure planet recently and I experienced new emotions after seeing it
I loved Treasure Planet, but had no ideal it tanked at the box office. But still if I was offered to watch any of Disney's current movies for free I would happily pay to see this movie again instead.

21:40 Bonus fact 102b: An unfinished level has been discovered in the game files of the Kingdom Hearts 3DS game Dream Drop Distance closely resembling the R.L.S. Legacy, implying that Treasure Planet was actually considered to be put in the game
I hope you get to Disney's Dinosaur soon. While it's yes a flawed movie, but it does have a lot of interesting history and you can even go into some paleontological facts on some of the dinosaurs and creatures in the film. Or heck since you mentioned Ice Age, you should do that too since that movie is already 20 years old as well.

Regarding number 98, yeah Disney seemed to have a pattern with its release date of films. Yeah Aladdin was released the day before Thanksgiving in 1992.
Then between 1994-2002, Disney released its films in mid June. Several films were released in November in 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2012.
Excluding BH6 and some films released starting from 2013, Disney’s films have been released the day before Thanksgiving. Heard Frozen 2 was about to be released on that day but got pushed ahead.
Still to this day, I love Treasure Planet. It was one of the most underrated Disney movies of the early 2000s.
