Literally EVERYTHING is great about Treasure Planet, the fact that it's so slept on is a crime and I want justice.
Here, here! Preach it!
Except for the robot, and the advertising that killed the surprise.

YES
I completely understand your frustration. I literally grew up on this movie.
This movie was ahead of its time. It tackled many adult topics that we didn't fully comprehend when we were kids.
Yeah. And what's even better is that it's adult issues weren't woke like Frozen & Frozen 2 and some of the Disney animated films released in the Revival Era are. Parental abandonment and greed are way more important and worth warning people about than race and gender.
This movie was a passion project that broke the mold of what was considered a "Disney Movie". It was during the 90's and early 2000's when Disney had the guts to put out something truly meaningful, without bashing us over the head with a "message". It didn't hold our hand and didn't hint at the bad things. Thank you for pointing out every single little thing that I loved about this film, I will come back and rewatch this video after every rewatch.

YES!!!!!! I love this movie. This movie was the start of my Fantasy
addiction 🥰🥰🥰
I’ve always respected how they made the decision to have Jim’s dad just flat out leave. Not disappear mysteriously on an adventure, not die, not sacrifice himself or something, just flat out “I’m leaving forever, bye”
Not only is that far more realistic and honestly pretty relatable (more people can say they’ve had parents go through a divorce than a parent dying when young), but it makes Silver’s half truth/half manipulation of Jim feel way more believable.
If Jim’s dad had just died as he did in the original story, you would have had a character who was well aware of what parental love was and could see through some of Silver’s bullshit. But Silver giving him that pep talk after Arrow dies is so, so much better.
Which is a bit more realistic of a separation.
"Now you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show 'em what you're made of, Well, I hope I'm there, Catchin' some the light comin' off you that day."
- Silver (2002)
Also, it didnt do the typical trope of the villian who turns good again sacrificing himself, I was almost certain they were gonna kill off Long John Silver, glad they did not.
@@athalonARC yeah, but I watched JoJo Rabbit and when a villian turns to a hero in the end, it was accually kind of sad.
Well I don't. 😑.
I really hate how all these amazing 2D movies from the early 2000s are ignored and mostly tanked when hitting theatres despite being very good
Tal The Dreamer the publishers wanted to kill drawn animation because digital was faster and cheaper from a labor standpoint.
Like Atlantis, because omfg that movie is incredible.
I’ve seen a lot of bad animated movies this decade. I think at a point animation becomes so easy to produce they don’t pay enough attention to it and they just start factory producing garbage movies like ugly dolls or boss baby or the good dinosaur or home
Titan AE is an amazing movie
They were extremely dumb for releasing this movie the same month as Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
I loved Treasure Planet. I'll never understand why (nor forgive) Disney for bailing on it.
As to the why, it was pure spite, it was a movie they absolutely didn't want to make but were contractually obligated to make with a previous agreement with either its (directors or producers can't remember which) so they gave it fuck all marketing and released it at a very inopportune time of the year, they didn't want to make it but were legally obligated to so they set it up to fail.
Agreed and it is very sad/wrong of Disney to purposefully make this DOA. It's an amazing achievement technologically for the time, and it's beautifully done. I love the character development! Great movie all around!
Breadsword has an amazing video on what went wrong with the marketing of the movie, I can heavily recommend it
I know it sucks. I loved this. I believe that Disney hated it was due to the sheer cost of this movie. It uses 3 types of animation: traditional, cg and deepcanvas which is already an expensive method of animation
Same, I was PISSED when I found out and that they actually had a sequel in the works...
Was I the only one who noticed how the captains eyes would change like a cats to match her mood?
Example: She catches the map when Jim throws it at her and her pupils are blown out like a cat who was tosses a ball of ribbon. Once she realizes how she has reacted, she gets serious and her eyes slit again.
Yeah I noticed that too! Same with her ears
Ah, no, not quite. Yes, her eyes did change with her mood, but that was because she was side-eying Jim, instantly picking up on his lack of respect for authority and was not about to have any of that on her ship.
@@JenamDrag0n while you might be correct in this scene, her pupils do dilate or constrict depending on what she's doing.
Slits: Target acquired
Wide pupils: Dumbass mode engaged!
Wow i love the detail!

@@breadophile In a sense that line kinda shows that Disney kept them from their dream project and from making it as big as it could have been
Loved that scene too. The fun part is, I don't doubt it at all, because throughout the movie Silver came to love Jim to the point that all the riches in the world didn't mean anything compared to losing him. We even see this be true, when he parts with the nadful of trasure he recovered, in order to help Jim and his family.
It is THE best quote imo. 😅 The other one is, "Look at ye, glowin' like a solar fire..."

Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are my two favorite "forgotten" or "lost" Disney movies. They were both passion projects that dared to break the traditional "Disney movie" formula, and wound up at the bottom of the pile due to Disney failing to follow up on them _because_ they were so different from what they traditionally do.
I mean... the entire 2000s are the original-yet-forgotten Disney movies.
And both of them are so full of heart and interesting characters. They really show that the people who made them cared very deeply about their work.

'Character is surprised by his own competence' - I would have to agree this has to become a more common trope.

I love this movie so fucking much but i admit its not perfect. but weak chacterization??? the characters is what makes this movie amazing to me.
“It’s a lifelong obsession lad, I’ll get over it.”
One thing I'd like to mention that I think was missed. At the beginning of the movie Sarah (Jim's mom) talks about hoping one day she'll see that happy little boy, bringing home a new pet, asking if they can keep it. And at the end of the movie Jim brings home morph, which I thought was an interesting little detail. I still think showing up with the dying pirate is directly related to the line and a fitting transition for that scene. But I think it also counts as foreshadowing/ payoff through morph
As everyone says this is one of those criminally underrated Disney films, having mature tones that not every family is a perfect family. Not every kids get a parental figure from both parents. In Jim's case he had no father figure at all until Silver, having to deal with the betrayal again from his '2nd dad' as it were is gut wrenching and also as stated, he was a minor. Not many minors can take that kind of thing very well
I mean in the book Jim’s dad actually died in chapter 3 while Billy Bones is staying as their guest. It’s kinda pointed out how he was still drinking and being his usual rude self even on the day of the funeral of Jim’s dad. And then all hell breaks loose.
The movie made a choice here to change this part of the story. I think it works pretty well. Certainly ads some new dimension to Jim’s own character in the movie, though I think the struggling through all this adventure while still in greef could have been an interesting choice too.
I shit thee not, I never even clocked that Silver's arm was CGI, the blend is almost flawless.
It's amazing, adding a cg element to a 2d character and making it look natural- they didn't even know if they *could* do it until they tried. There is a reel where they stuck a cyborg arm on an old captain hook animation just to see if it would work, the fact that it still holds up so naturally is a testament to the effort and care put into the movie
Yeah I found that out today. Absolutely amazing for 2002
Wait, the hand is cgi?
I didn’t realize till you said it.
Wait theres cg wow

Dionette same here...it was apart of my childhood s9 it has a special place in my heart.
This film is CRIMINALLY underrated. It is great in almost every way, the characters, world building, voice acting, animation EVERYTHING
I've always liked the fact that Silver's character isn't just black & white in terms of the cliché 'starts bad, turns good'. There is a lot of grey in between. He is a pirate on a mission for riches and isn't afraid to be the bad guy when he has to, but he also has a pure heart of gold that he obviously hides from the other pirates, similar to how most men IRL will hide their emotions to stay strong to those around, or act tough in a sense, but that doesn't stop him from privately encouraging Jim anyway because he see's Jim is obviously hurting deep down and needs guidance on growing up.
He meets Jim and over the movie he finds that the best treasure is actually friendship and morality, NOT money. He literally gave up parts of himself in his search for Treasure Planet, but he couldn't give up Jim. He lets go of the boat full of treasure and saves his new friend instead which ends his mistakes, shows he's ready to be a better man and he ultimately finds himself in that decision.
In my opinion Silver is the greatest father figure character in any Disney film, or any film, and his 'Makings of Greatness' speech to Jim is 10/10, it's such a shame Disney failed this film on purpose. They could have easily promoted this film in the right way, made a TON of money and pushed for the Pixar style anyway.. but nope :(
After all his misdeeds, I wouldn't exactly call Silver a "heart of gold," yet he is definitely a heart of ... silver. :D
I think he is the best father figure of all Disney films I know, because he is the most deeply flawed. He is purposely written as the most unlikely character to fill that slot - greedy, ruthless, scheming, treacherous etc., the kind of character whose dark aspects would instantly whisk him out of the "sympathetic" slot in any modern Disney movie. But for that reason, he's all the more haunting. He isn't deified like Mufasa, he's profoundly, almost mundanely human. And for that reason, his choice of Jim over the gold in the end hits home so much harder.
Best dad fr! That speech makes me tear up every time!
“Digital artists aren’t just pushing a button”
YOURE DARNED RIGHT THEY ARENT ! There was so much hard work put into this film
I grew up with digital art all looking very similar. I now see otherwise but I still prefer hand drawn works. And if there's a place animation should aim, it's this era. I'll miss the style. Hope for it to comeback.
And Disney fing assassinated it
@Alexander Supertramp It's an appreciation. I admire hand control of that level and consistency. As an artist myself one must separate and appreciate how we got to digital. And people have avoided making things look hand drawn in digital movies for quite some time. So I hardly say its a full replacement too. I would say there's plenty of reasons to prefer hand-drawn.
I'm not ragging on your opinion of preference towards digital. It's just a very corporate standpoint to deny any upsides.
They are pushing many buttons.
@Alexander Supertramp Machine built things are/can be superior to everything humans can do, but even in watchmaking, the top tier watches (lets say $30K and above) are all hand made, with hundreds if not thousands hours of labour for each piece. Why? Because we appreciate someone working with it for such a long time. I bet some really finely tuned CNC machine could do in 30 mintues what a human does in dozens of hours, but it still wouldnt have a soul. There is a beauty in hard work.
loved this movie, I HATE that is not talked more
I personally think this movie is better than any princess movie, Lion King, and a few others. I still love Hercules Hunchback of Notre Dame and one 3-D princess movie I love is Tangled. Reason why I like Tangled is because it's the only Disney princess movie where the guy questions the singing.
I know right. It doesn't get the respect as the other movies.
It's makes me so MAD that it's so underrated
This is my childhood
It kills me to not know where my own DVD copy went. It was a beautiful movie.
You made the comment about liking silver as an adult. As someone who saw this very young, I agree with the wonderful temptation to live life as an outlaw with zero cares being seductive and that silver was inherently evil at first. But that only added to the sympathy and choice present in silver throughout. Silver teaches Jim self reliance and independence while Jim reminds Silver that some things matter more than even your lifelong dreams. I feel they both grew and benefitted equally from their relationship and what is amazing is how each of them choose to act as a result. Jim choosing his own honorable path, and Silver choosing Jim's future and potential, someone else, for once over fulfilling himself.
Keep doing what you are doing, brilliant sir!!!
It's so good.
Silver is one of my favorite characters all time. I love his dynamic with Jim so much. I especially loved that, in the scene where the pirates are getting frustrated that they don’t see where the map has lead them- when they shove Jim to the ground- Silver looks so conflicted. In his facial expressions and bodily movements, you can tell he’s struggling to decide which side he wants to be on: to encourage his lackeys or stand up for Jim. Even if he’s also incredibly frustrated, he almost does break his character early to stand up for Jim in that moment. Also, every scene where Silver’s encouraging Jim and giving him wise words- like when he was making Jim feel better about the death that he thought he caused or when they’re saying goodbye to one another at the end- it always makes me cry.
I was born in 2003 and watched this movie when I was young, probably because I think my mom found Jim hot- fucking weird. I only managed to watch it again once I got Disney +. It may not be the best movie, but I still absolutely love it, mostly just for the father/son dynamic Silver and Jim have.
i literally cannot watch this film without crying
wtf same
dunno if this is the reason for you, but this movie unfortunately hits home for a lot of people with the part where Jim's father abandons him. I know it did for me...
Same.
Who doesn't?? I mean it shows off real world problems and teaches many important lessons that either give you sad or happy tears. Honeslty I think I am just obsessed with this movie
YOU GOT THE MAKINGS OF GREATNESS IN YOU
When Silver said “I hope I’m there, catching some of the light comin’ off ya that day,” and Jim’s expression changes, that there. That’s why I love this movie. 🥰
I almost cry every time
As a young boy, I cried wishing i could hear that in real life and believe it.
That whole speech, combined with Jim's reaction & Howard's score, almost made me cry no joke. Jim had just come off thinking he was responsible for Mr. Arrow's demise and felt awful, especially because he thought he'd found a place of belonging on the ship. Although Scroop tipped off Silver that it was actually his doing, Silver obviously couldn't tell Jim that without blowing the whole mission, so he comforted him in the best way he could. By doing so, Silver ended up revealing just how much his growing friendship with Jim had meant to him, and even surprised himself with how deep he got after Jim left. It was such a fantastic scene between the two. And the fact that Scroop was revealed to have been eavesdropping added a great layer of intensity with its conclusion.
I watched TP for the first time last week and loved it, and this was one of my favorite scenes. I now understand what the hype has been all about. :)
Where I'm from, the dubbed version of this film used to be on the television all the time when I was a kid, and I always was so happy when I saw it was on! In my head, up until recently, I thought it was a successful Disney movie (maybe not princess level, but still). I was very disheartened to hear that it flopped in the cinemas, it definitely didn't deserve that. It's such a great, BEAUTIFUL movie!
Also, Jim was definitely one of my first crushes as a kid. Looking back at it as a young adult, I wonder if he's the root of what I now know is "my type" haha
This probably my favorite Disney movie of all time. Jim is such a comfort character, and I can relate to his story without the sci-fi adventure part.
Fun fact: Disney animators of 2002 had to relearn old methods of animation to get Silver's arm/hand movements to look fluid. They used a Captain Hook scene from the 1953 Peter Pan as a reference!
Not quite. They did an existing animation test with Captain Hook to see if the 3D arm would still have sufficient life and vibrancy to match with the rest of a lively 2D animation style or if it would be distractingly off-kilter. Needless to say, it passed with flying colors
The fact that the protagonist and antagonist in this movie, in the end become good friends, is pretty unique for a disney movie. And Newton's soundtrack... Need I say more. Please do Atlantis: the Lost empire next. and if so, please include the viking prologue
Yassssssss WHY they removed it from the final cut I don't understand.
"Outdated nautical language counter"
Begins the counter with constabulary, a common word still used in the UK for the police department and nothing to do with sailing...
H M M M...
This whole damn movie is a treasure and the fact that Disney actively worked to tank it is A TRAGEDY.

As someone whose dad also barely was in the picture, this is my honest to god favourite film ever made, I've rewatched it pretty regularly every year since I was a kid until now close to 30 and with a family of my own. It always spoke to me, first from Jim's perspective and these days more from Silver's. The fact so many people haven't even heard of it is such a shame.
Post-edit: Also speaking of Silver, the whole him manipulating Jim and it being iffy, Silver was very much the antagonist at the start of the movie, cold, ruthless pirate that was there for the treasure and nothing else and wouldn't shy from killing in order to reach it. However, much like his influence on Jim was key for Jim, it goes both ways, Jim changed Silver during their journey so much he got stuck between wanting to be a role model for Jim and the pirate he was, he knew he couldn't show weakness to his crew as they would probably mutiny on him and kill him in a blink of an eye, but he still couldn't bring himself to kill Jim either so he chose to play it the best way he could, keeping Jim safe and playing the bad guy front in exchange for losing him and his trust, a painful sacrifice only a loving dad could ever make in that scenario. A front that shatters in that final moment when he chooses to save Jim over his own lifelong dream, yes it's just money, but it was something he's essentially lived for and sacrificed his own body to achieve one day.
“Dang it Jim I’m an astrologer not a doctor.” 😂😂😂

This might have nearly destroyed Disney, but it’s one of the best and underrated films they’ve made.
Ironically, Disney failed this movie in the marketting. In fact, they failed it so hard that I find it impossible that it wasn't on purpose.
This movie captured my imagination like nothing else, and still blows me away with its creativity to this day.

Silver's speech to Jim is probably my favourite thing about this movie. The line "You're gonna rattle the stars" is just so freaking good omg
I love "You've got the makings of greatness" myself. Something we never say enough to each other.
So much so that they chose that line for his character screen in Disney Heroes Battle Mode
I actually cried and I’m not the type who cries watching movies.
The delivery itself gives me chills more often than not. It's just that good
One of my three kids' favorites. I took them all to see it in the theater when it came out . They were four, six and seven. Two boys and a girl. They all loved it and had a great time. They all still remember that day and speak of it fondly. The movie spurned many questions of parenting, morals, and adventure. I enjoyed the vocabulary and am happy that someone else finally noticed the complexity added in to a kids movie. When the youngest (the girl) had to write her first book report in jr high, she chose "Treasure Island". I asked her why and she told me because of this movie that she saw as a little girl. Cockles warmed. Thank you.
So, Im gonna defend the nature of Jim and Silver's relationship in this movie.
Musker and Clements, especially early in their Disney careers, new a secret of "Kids" movies that I think many directors and producers have forgotten in the moder era. Kids movies arent just for kids, but also for their parents and guardians. And that means that means you can also teach the adult audience a lesson at the same time as the kids.
And thats why I think Silver and Jim worl so well together. Jim learns to be a man, to stand up for himself, take responsibility and make his own choices in life. At the same time, Silver learns to be a father. To care for and protect someone other than himself.
The kids get to look up to Jim, and the adults get to learn from Silver. And thats why I think their relationship is one if the best in Disney, or even film, canon
"in the end, he didn't need what he wanted so badly" i don't know how you managed to sum up what being a teenager is like in one sentence but man, you nailed it on the head. love this channel
best part it applies the silver just as much as Jim. They both sacrificed what they really wanted for something that really made them happy.
I imagine the narrator of the video telling us he’s a dad himself gives him unique perspective

Things I appreciate EVEN MORE about this movie after all these years:
1. Already loved the animation the first time I saw it, but now that 2D is something of a rarity I appreciate even more how much love and care was put into the details. There are so many different types of creatures with all different body types in this movie, and they all move so well! And the expressions on characters during some of the more poignant scenes shows how complicated their inner emotions are - it isn't just straight anger or sadness or one thing, it's a mix of things that let you see exactly what they're thinking. Incredible.
2. The music is gorgeous. Not so much the featured vocal songs, though they aren't bad. But the instrumental pieces in this, from the harrowing moments to the echoing strings in the background of quieter scenes in space, are just perfect. They add another layer to the movie you can't even see the first time through.
3. [Unlike the beginning of this video...🙄😤] This film does not talk down to kids. It's for them, sure, but it holds them to a higher standard and doesn't dumb things down. Sure, there's fart jokes and cute alien pets, but also scientific references and a lot of grey area content they actually have to consider deeply. It treats them just like people, and as a kid I loved any film that would do that.
4. In addition to the stellar 2D animation (geddit? Stellar? No? I'll see myself out), the 3d animation integration is incredibly well done. It's got a 2D style focus in mind and doesn't stand out from the rest of the movie like a sore thumb, but instead used to enhance the actual technical gadgets in the film, like maps and hovercraft, etc. Even B.E.N the robot as a partial 3D character fits this. Technology applied to technology, which is ingenious.
So basically, as someone who grew up loving art, machinery, sci-fi and knowledge, an animated movie set in space with a technology focus and a vocabulary count higher than a MENSA exam was MY movie 💖💖❤👍💖❤
So, this movie, alongside Atlantis, are my two favorite disney renaissance movies. They forged new trails with their big ideas, meaningful relationships, and stunning worlds. Atlantis has, well, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet has the vastness of space that it treats like the open sea. Treasure Planet BARELY edges out against Atlantis for me, but they're both underrated classics. If I had my choice, I'd have them both remade in 3d animation like Frozen or Tangled style. That would be a dream of mine.
Both of those movies fall outside the Renaissance period. '89 to '99, Mermaid to Tarzan. But they're both great movies.
I always liked Jim’s relationship with Silver. I watched this movie pretty young and I got the nuance of the relationship. I think that kids can get that nuance better than we think. I think it’s good for kids to learn this stuff early too.
While everyone is here you should take the time to watch “Treasure Planet: Disney’s biggest mistake” it’s a 30-40 minute talk on why it flopped and how it is without a doubt one of Disney’s best lost movies.
I’ve seen that video a couple times, it really is sad what Disney did to this movie
Watched that one as well really really well explained and done. The youtuber that put that video out also has some other really good movies and explains things beautifully.
Thanks for the mention, I'll look it up!
I've seen the video (to clarify, I haven't watched the video) and I thought, just from the title, that they were implying making Treasure Planet was a mistake on Disney's part and couldn't fathom how they thought the movie was so bad that it was the biggest mistake Disney had ever made.
Maybe I'll check it out later.
IIRC, the video actually talks about how what Disney did to Treasure Planet was the mistake.
That's the problem with clickbait titles: if you're relying on people to watch your video out of indignation, then people who aren't into drama will avoid the video and never learn that it's actually praise.
The relationship between Jim and Silver always gets me in my feelings 🥹
Same. I love redeemed villains. My favorite part of the entire movie is when Silver has a clear shot at Jim as he's escaping with the map, and then puts the gun down and can't do it. People who do terrible things can have a softer side.
I've been obsessed for about a year now and I still ugly cry on the inside whenever I pay attention to it.
Yeah, the narrator of these videos seemed to say that their relationship was a flaw with the movie but I think it's one of the movie biggest strengths. It's morally complex and leads to characters arcs and I really like it!
Silver said it himself, you give up a few things chasing a dream. It's played as him talking about his arm, but it could be he had a child he left behind, adding to the father/son dynamic.
Especially since it’s actually a diversion from the book.
In the book, Silver doesn’t really teach Jim anything (mostly lets him goof off), and the story ends with Jim being scarred for life and terrified at the memory of Silver.
I dunno man, I watched this movie when I was around 8~9 years old from what I recall, and I never got the impression that Silver was being excused. I still understood he was the bad guy and did a really bad thing but that he did also genuinely come to care for Jim and has some decency still in him.
I wish Disney hadn't set this movie up to fail. I can only imagine the limits they'd be pushing even further with animation in the years following if this movie had made a lot of money.
Silver is such a good character. Fighting an irredeemable villain is easy. Fighting a friend, who helped you become better than you were? That’s... that’s a struggle.
You don’t have to labor out a certain world view to understand how a villain might think of himself as justified *Thanos, cough cough* You understand, Silver knows he kind of sucks, and he hates himself for it. But he consciously makes the choices to be the bad guy, and doesn’t try to make excuses for it beyond his own selfish desire. But it’s the shreds of good we root for.
It’s because Silver has some genuinely redeeming qualities. Qualities absent in other characters. Most write off Jim, or at most, tolerate him. But Silver does something we like (treating Jim well) that we don’t really see flushed out with other characters.
Silver is a character that seems fantastically real. We want to see him succeed when he does good. And mourn when he chooses to do something bad. I should sit down and read the original book.
I LOVED the big words in this movie! They did a really good job in making it sound super spooky and spacy without being unbelievable. I knew even as a kid that Etherium was just a really fancy word for space, just what they might call it. Because you know, space pirates. It gave the entire movie as much of the fantasy story book vibe as I think they expected.
I enjoyed this movie so much when I was young (Born in 1996). I didn't watch it until I was about 9 or so but it really doesn't matter, it was so extremely well made and I was just blown away. I watched it over and over on our VHS and I never grew tired. Now that I'm older I see not only the effects of things but the story is incredible as well, I honestly didn't know this was a Disney movie because I didn't watch a lot of movies in my youth but I wish there could be more like this. It may be unpopular but I would see no problem with a sequel. This movie is so underrated and maybe a new one would increase this ones popularity. I don't know, I just want people to watch this movie. And watching this youtube clip was a treat, it's always a joy. End of story, cheers from Sweden!

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS
This is one of the classics we all need to rewatch to fully appreciate it. We should petition to get it back into theaters
This was a movie I watched when I was younger, the big words ALWAYS had context with them so I didn’t need to understand what they were saying but I knew what they meant? Now that I’m looking at how well they did this I appreciate it so much more!
Well I'm surprised that one little detail is overlooked in the movie when silver has a father figure qoutes or lessons he only shows he real eye and the opposite is true when he talks as a pirate and as a villain he's mechanical eyes are the one that's more visible
Oooo, I never noticed that!
I like your comment. It also makes sense because as he implied, his robotic parts came from sacrifices to reach his dream. You can almost argue that the mechanical parts represent the souless pirate, whereas the rest is his humanity, which is why his human factions are on display when he's being kind to Jim. The metaphor can be taken even futher, as we see his metal arm is the one to grab onto the treasure-filled boat, while his human arm reaches to try and save Jim, and while he doesn't lose the appendage, he lets go of his dream with his pirate hand at the end, in that moment making a decision about which part of him to listen to: the cunning and selfish pirate vs the man who sees himself as almost Jim's dad. I'd say that the ending where Jim lets Silver get away isn't icky, since Jim's thanking and repaying Silver for all the things he did for Jim, because he saw that they were true and sincere because of Silver's sacrifice. That moment made Jim once more care for Silver, and letting him leave was Jim's way of thanking him for everything, If Silver hadn't saved Jim, he could have probably escaped with his fortune, but he chose to give it up and risk imprisonment, so Jim saw it as fair to give the man a chance, the same way Silver gave him a chance when most others saw him as a washed up loser with no future.
I love this movie and the shit Jim went through with his dad because it feels more realistic compared to a lot of Disney films.
His dad didn’t die, or was killed by a pirate, or he never knew him as a lot of Disney films tend to do. He just left. He left when Jim was old enough to understand what leaving meant. And that hits home for a lot more people growing up.
Treasure Planet is my favorite of the still 2D Disney films, and ranks high in all films for me
I was about to watch this video, but then I left to watch the movie. The movie was very amazing, and it is one of the most underrated movies I have ever seen.
One of my favorite things about this movie is that yeah, it *was* a passion project.
It wasn't trying to keep up with the Joneses of some other studio, it wasn't riding some temporary zeitgeist, it wasn't out to push some message, it wasn't pandering to some special interest or beholden to anything---
It was just someone trying to tell a good story. And it worked.
*whispers* now, atLANTIS :D
I remember watching this movie for the first time, back when I was 6 or 7. I then revisited it when I was 15. Now I'm 18, and I'm still a little teary-eyed when I reflect on Jim's story, his relationship with Silver, and how much it has mirrored my life's story to this point. Treasure Planet is the gem in Disney's long buried chest of forgotten films, that has yet to lose it's magic. I just hope more generations will get to see it, too.
I guess another reason I keep coming back to this movie is I never had a father ever in my life, and to see a character like this at such a young age I connected with, Jim understood what it was like to be without that.
Dude, the lore, the setting, the species, everything in this movie is what comes to mind when I think of “alternate universe in the future”. I would love to see this universe fleshed out in a lot more detail, the history, politics, power struggles, economy, everything!
I always actually liked the kid and Silver's relationship. As you said, life is messy, Silver was a bad guy but clearly something in there was still good to find. The imperfection in it all is why I love it, everything is never black and white

Neither did I. I ADORE this movie.
One of my favourite things about this movie is the world building. So much thought is clearly put into it all.
Not only thought, but also creativity and especially imagination.
Treasure Planet is one of my favourite movies of all time. I saw it when it first came out (I was 1 of the 10 kids that saw it in theatre) and I've loved it ever since.
If you're wondering about the weird win counter set up for this movie, Treasure Planet just has the craziest aspect ratio that has letterboxing (the black bars that are usually on the top and bottom) on the sides this time. So I figured I'd try this out. Happy Holidays with this early upload!

I’m a simple man. I see one of the most underrated animated films ever, I see your channel, I click immediately
This movie was one of my favorites as a kid, my brother and I still rewatch it every year around Christmas in our nostalgia night
2:45 Everyone thinks of Jack Dawson when they see Jim's Haircut... young Indie in the Last Crusade, anyone? xD
Honestly, I didn't even consider the negative side of Silver's side to the father-son like relationship. I watched the movie first when I was a kid, where it became a favorite (didn't know why at the time), and as a teenager I rediscovered my love for Treasure Planet. As someone closer to Jim's age, I've had similar talks with my own father that reflect the moments Silver supports Jim. So things like the death threats being "tossed aside" flew over my head, even when rewatching the movie several times.
I was from the perspective of the child/son (Jim), which seems to be more forgiving. However, @CinemaWins perspective from the father figure (Silver) reminds me of how we all see movie's from different perspectives. Things like timing, personal relationships, and background effect those perspectives.
The comment made me go "huh" rather than defensive like I would have expected. I enjoy the new perspective, it makes me want to sit down and watch the movie again to understand that one segment. It probably helps that along with the text there is the wary-full voice over. Once again, reminds me that seeing text alone and hearing a voice over them can be the bar between anger and understanding. Thanks for the reminder. :)
Great video, @CinemaWins, and Happy Holidays to anyone reading this!
This comment needs more thumbs up.
Happy holidays! 🎊🎉🍾
Hyperbolic threats is a common flaw in a father/male authority. And Silver is displayed as being very hyperbolic and poetic, as well as silver-tongued (NPI). I don't think anyone is supposed to take the threat seriously.
@@trequor Big words are used throughout the film, as stated in the beginning of the video. You make a point. "Silver-tongued" got a smile out of me as a ironic pun, intentional or not.
While I do agree, that there definetly is the risk of children taking away the wrong message with Silver, I would actually argue that the reason why portrayals like these are so important, is because they teach kids to SEPERATE different aspects of a character/person. Learning that the good things you do don't excuse abusive or manipulative behavior. But also that a persons mistakes don't invalidate them treating others well and caringly. I would even go so far as to say that your concern of "A kid might walk away thinking that if an adult treats you like Silver, it's ok because he never did anything TOO bad" actually stems from the usual LACK of messages like this.
When everything is "black and white" that forces you to put people into these categories and they are either fully good or fully bad. A lot of times people excusing or tolerating horrible behavior comes from them not being able to see others as complex individuals. They don't want to accept bad behavior as such, because that meant the parental figure/loved one had to be a bad person. And how could they be bad, if they clearly care at other times or have in the past. Most people don't like condemning someone they love.
Conversely other people often tend to see any negative aspect or behavior as proof of a malicious/evil disposition. Believing that you either perfectly fit into their idea of a good moral person or are an irredeemable monster. Too often they think treating something as a grey area means acting as if something clearly "black" were "white" or the other way around. Not beeing able to see anything outside the extremes.
Lastly it also causes problems with ones self-image. Someone might have problems accepting ones own mistakes and flaws because they don't want to see themself as a bad person. Or they do see their errors, but can't admit them, because they fear ostracisation from everyone around them.
So while you do run the risk of seeming appologetic about bad behavior, when implementing characters and morals like Silver into your story, in the long run it's much more harmful to never have kids deal with these ideas.
Beautifully put, dude.
Absolutely amazing man, way more concise than just "ayyyy things aren't always just black white, k?" I prolly would've put lol we really do need more complex antagonists in movies in general though I feel like it is always way too "well they need to be stopped cuz they bad!" When it's rarely that clear In real life
Reading your comment was amazing. A striking analysis.
I have nothing further to add, take my like.
You're totally right
Theres also the recent revolting trend of "oh they had a sad backstory thats why theyre bad" vying for us to care for murderers/kidnappers and worse? Like i dont give a rats ass on what led them here, it doesnt take away what they have just done.
Like i'm very worried kids will start to think objectively bad people arent bad just cus they had a sad childhood cus i know i wouldve and did as an abused kid. Like no matter what you go through, it doesn't mean you suddenly have a free pass to make others suffer the same way or worse :/
Feels v much like it'll excuse bullies for their behaviour so they don't reflect on themselves (even tho thats no different than the black and white dychotomy you described)
Not to mention some people are just bad despite nothing wrong ever happening so it's like -__-
Like there are kids nowadays who in the middle of daylight kick grandmothers in the middle of a macdonalds and people do nothing to stop them. (Happened to my close friends grandma)
So we deffo need better pop culture to teach kids cus apparently people aint parenting 🙄
I wish I could like this comment many more times. I think your analysis is brilliantly put and spot on.
Treasure planet is an underrated masterpiece and I love the fact that I'm not the only one noticing it. Bad income doesn't mean a bad movie, ok?
I honestly forget it was a Disney Movie because I know so many people who said they never heard of it. I loved the movie growing up and I believe it taught me things about life that other kid movies at the time didn’t teach me. I especially learned about how life isn’t just black and white. It’s probably the biggest thing I carry with me from it.
The song "I'm Still Here" from this movie is so damn relatable. Love this movie.
I can relate because my father doesn't acknowledge me because I'm
1) I'm queer
And 2) I'm a girl
I love I'm Still Here. It's an all time favorite of mine
@Belladonna Noir yeah both songs are sung by john rzeznik (the lead singer of the goo goo dolls)
If somebody understands French I highly recommend listening to that version. The lyrics are completely different yet they still fit another aspect of Jim's journey: the quest for freedom.
I have only one thing before watching this video.
This movie is one of the underrated animated movies of all time
treasure planet and the iron giant is my #1 (yes #1) underrated and underappreciated movies
Ever since the first time I watched Treasure Planet, I’ve been absolutely addicted to watching it. Even tho this video is 4 years old im GLAD you covered it, its such a god damn underrated gem!
One detail I find very cool is that the light in Silver’s cyborg eye changes depending on his mood. It becomes red when he’s angry and white with an intensive glow when he’s excited
I really do love Treasure Planet. It's such a great movie, and was such a good coming of age story. That, and it was so beautifully animated.
Shame on Disney for deliberately tanking what should have been a masterpiece in animation.
Very underrated movie.
This is one of it not the best underappreciated movies Disney's ever done.
This movie holds a double-place in my heart: For the movie itself, and for John Rzeznik and the Goo Goo Dolls. I'm so annoyed that his own rendition of Always Know Where You Are isn't on the OST on Spotify.
This movie is a underrated masterpiece. Even today looks better than some animated films.
Fun fact the guy that voiced the dieing pirate, was sick the day he came in. So when he was talking, he literally sounded like he was dying.
Ou, did not know that. Nice touch that adds realism and detail to an already good performance.
I had to reread your comment. I thought it said "F!#& the guy that voiced the dying pirate."

The title should be "Everything IS great about Treasure Planet"
Except for the robot
@@JChandoha nah he's fine
@@JChandoha B.E.N is great though!
@@JChandoha I agree, the robot was annoying. But they were in post robin Williams phase so they wanted every movie to have that side character and it feels kinda forced and not fitting the tone. But what they don't understand is not every comedian's strength. They should've written him kinda like olaf in the first movie.. quiet but effective.
Well over a decade later, and it just now occurs to me that Morph is supposed to be the "parrot" of the crew. I just thought "Ha, Morph ... Morph morphs into things, I get it" when parrots are known for their mimicry. WOW, I'm slow.
I see what your worried about with the character of silver, but in all honesty I think kids will get it. I was very young when this movie came out and me and my dad loved it. It has to be in his top three disney movies. When I was little I understood the character pretty well. While I am able to get the nuance a bit more as an adult, I still was able to have a complicated relationship with the character. I liked him and wanted him to be a better person, but I also understood that he wouldn't change and that he needed to go. Him doing bad things doesn't make him a bad person, but he still does bad things, and because of that, him and Jim need to go separate ways.
I think it was handled excellently, and I believe it is good for characters like this to show up in children's media from time to time. It helps us learn at a young age that people are complicated.
I very much did enjoy the aesthetic appeal of Treasure Planet and think it is the best attempt at original world building by Disney thus far. I think that two or more films set in this universe would have been interesting to see play out. They would not even have to involve Jim much at all, as his story had already been told, but could focus on two or more other unrelated original characters who happen to live within the same galaxy as Jim. It would be more just a backdrop for a sort of shared-universe anthology series of films all taking place within this truly creative setting. Maybe have Jim cameo at different points in his life, reminding us where it all started and showing that all is well with our former delinquent. I've always liked science fantasy more than hard science or straight fantasy settings and so would like for lesser known genres like Steampunk/Dieselpunk/Biopunk/Gaslight fantasy, and etc... with their own unique twist receiving more mainstream attention in the near future. They really are underappreciated subgenres of science fiction/fantasy and I do sincerely believe they have much to offer audiences when it comes to original characters, story telling and worldbuilding. Both Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are steampunk inspired and I enjoyed those films immensely(despite the many flaws of Atlantis: The Lost Empire). Just my two cents...
Nice rant
If you look at the official art book, there was going to be a Treasure Planet 2, and they were planning on giving him some red-haired girl to fall for. And there has been so much bonus film-based material and world building that I wouldn’t be surprised if there were going to be spinoffs, like in your idea. I thought you’d like to know that.
And the reason Treasure Planet wasn’t more of a success and the projects weren’t followed through on enough was mostly due to Disney executive shutdowns, not because the movie was bad. It was partly because they wanted to convince the company that all their failed films were due to 2d animation being outdated and sabotaged the movie to support their decision to completely go to 3D animation, and partly from pettiness and bias against the creators. This is detailed more in the video Treasure Planet: Disney’s Biggest Mistake by BREADSWORD.

I’m Still Here is one of the most catchy, sneaky beautiful Disney songs that never fails to WRENCH my heart out and make me weep. I don’t even think it’s that dated, I adore it so much.
I believe the Deep Canvas program was actually created when they made Tarzan back in the late 90s for animating the jungle background and the tree-surfing shots. It does come as too much of a surprise though - you can see a lot of the same artistic influences between these two movies.
