Well, Disney sequels and spin-offs have had a bad track record of either retreading old ground or having lower quality animation. However, it would’ve been amazing to see more of this unique world and what an alien Blackbeard would’ve looked like.
The way Disney purposefully set this movie up to fail (by releasing it alongside HARRY FREAKING POTTER) after having Musker and Clements JUMP THROUGH HOOPS in order to make their dream project is something that still makes my blood boil.
They were trying to kill hand drawn animation anyway, so it was kind of doomed to fail according to Disney. Glorious film, but "too time consuming" for Disney, so away it goes
Eisner, Eisner, what happened to you? You pulled of miracles to save this company from bankruptcy, only to turn around 10 years later and drive it into the ground again. I will never understand.
Didn’t Hercules bomb at the box office when it came out despite Musket and Clements directing that one as well? And yet it’s more popular than this and Hunchback. 😒
If it weren't released at a terrible time, I think it would've been a big hit. Or at least done better. Then again, all those 2D animated adventures films (Treasure Planet, Road to El Dorado, Atlantis) bombed.
That's so weird I literally rematch Treasure Planet for the first time in years 2 days ago and was only thinking a few hours ago about the cancelled sequel that I didn't know much about, perfect timing
Do you think if came out today but it was still 2d more people would come to see it since its a 2d animated film in theaters which a lot more rare these days i mean for me that would be a selling point
I would have loved a sequel. Not only would it be great to see JS and Jim reunite for literally any reason, it might have encouraged more experimentation in the future.
I don’t trust Disney anymore to not ruin originals with a crappy sequel so I’m glad that this brilliant movie never got a second one especially now, but it sure needed more hype.
i went to a disney store in june of last year, and they had the 100 year celebration ornaments that didn’t sell were on sale. there were a bunch of treasure planet ones. you best know i picked up one so fast-
The story, the song "im still here", the animation, the characters. I'm pretty sure Jim was 10 yr old me crush🤣. This movie is one of favourites❤. I would be liked another one as long as its not live action 😂
I watched this movie and loved it! This is why studio's need better marketing and be careful with their release fates as well. This movie deserved better, they need to re-release rhus movie to give it another chance of success!
This was the first movie I ever remember going to see in theaters, and it's been my favorite animated movie ever since. I had it on VHS (until the VCR ate and destroyed the tape), on DVD (until it got lost in a move), and now on Blu-Ray. I really hope that SOMEDAY it gets a 4K release. The only other animated movies that hold anywhere near as special a place in my heart as this are The Iron Giant and The Secret of NIMH.
Treasure Planet actually got a great sequel in the form of a video game. Battle at Procyon continues Jim's story in the Navy, expands the world, and would be a great source of inspiration for a TV show.
I remember back in the day when you got free stuff with cereal, one of them did a disc with a Treasure Planet game as part of the promo. You played as Jim on his solar surfer flying through the landscape. It was pretty cool, I spent hours on the desktop computer playing that game
One thing I always thought would be cool (if done very carefully) would have been a pre-qual following captain amelia and how she became such a well renowned captain.
Wait, there was going to be a Sequel to Treasure Planet at some point?? Not gonna lie, I actually had no idea a Sequel to this Film almost existed at some point.
I remember as a kid I, a person who had a LOT of trouble saving money as a child, scraped together my pitiful allowance in the hopes that one day I could buy my own copy of Treasure Planet. One time, I found it at Barnes & Noble, but it was $30, and even though I had enough money, my parents wouldn't let me buy it, because we would "find it cheaper elsewhere" (in most circumstances they would be correct, but this is Disney, and Disney had some weird vendetta against Musker & Clements for this project) ...I didn't find it cheaper elsewhere until college. I looked in every DVD section of every store we went to during all that time, always holding on to enough money to buy Treasure Planet, but the only times I was able to see it were the rare times it was on TV. Probably safe to say I would've watched a sequel and/or series. Sidenote: when will Disney+ put Fillmore! on their streaming platform? Loved that show as a kid.
I didn't expect this so I can't be mad. That being said it would have been fun to see how they made Doppler into a parent. Btw Dr. Doopler gave birth to his and Amelia's children. I watched the behind the scenes and was ECSTATIC learning this fact.
I only just discovered this movie when I got Disney plus last year- and I was honestly blown away by how beautiful it was. I remember putting it on just to have background noise for housework and ended up getting sucked into it right away.
The problem with so many Disney sequels is that Disney movies used to come from pre-established stories. Once you've gotten through the movie, that's likely it for the classic story. It's done. There's nothing left to work with. Now you're just making stuff up. So no, even if the original had succeeded, even if it wasn't straight to video, I don't think making a sequel for this movie would be a good idea. It's perfect the way it is. They should have put their efforts into saving 2D in the first place rather than making a quick buck off of a cheap DVD.
as a HUGE fan of this film, i’m glad it never got a sequel. one of my favourite things about jim (and the movie in general) is that it doesn’t have a love interest, the story doesn’t need it. not to mention that disney direct to dvd sequels are usually pretty shit. i prefer having the original story be one and done.
Treasure Planet is my all-time favorite 2D animated movie. I do really like the concept for the sequel and do think it could of been done well if they put the effort into it. A part of me still really hopes they may pick that project back up or just do anything with this movie's world. So much potential that hasn't materialised!
Speaking of cancelled Disney movies Dazz have you ever heard of The Ash Maker/The Shadow King? It’s a really interesting topic to me you should really make a video covering it 👍🏾
When i watched some parts of it at school and it happened 2 years ago 2022 i didn't realized that it came out 2002. i rewatched Treasure Planet again recently and man, yeah it had its flaws but that was my favorite movie as a kid. im not mad it didnt get a sequel cuz not everything needs it, but i am happy people are giving it some love again
The way Disney feels about live action adaptations and if Disney is interested in doing anything with treasure planet it will be most likely be their live action adaptation. Interesting fact: Disney is not the 1st one to make treasure planet. There actually is a 1982 animated film also called treasure planet.
I didn’t know this movie was considered a flop. I always found it really good. All of the characters had great depth and were likable, the music is such a earworm, and the art and animation blended perfectly with 2D and 3D is outstanding!
It wasnt a failure though, everyone I have asked likes it. It was literally just Disney screwing it over by releasing it at the worst time and not advertising it, the only ad I've ever seen was in a single DVD ad. Nobody came to see it because nobody knew it was coming out.
It’s a failure in the sense that it bombed at the box office, but yes you are right that it was well liked by fans, but Disney screwed up by releasing it at the worst time.

Speaking of Team Atlantis, you could also cover that canceled TV show, which was going to have a crossover episode with the iconic 1990s Disney animated TV series Gargoyles.
Treasure Planet, alongside Atlantis is one of my favourite box office bomb films of all time. Such an underappreciated masterpiece... Honestly, a sequel would have worked PERFECTLY for it... Too bad, the terrible advertising, even worse timing and overall horrible box office performance screwed it over really hard.
Treasure Planet is one of my favorite disney movies. as much as i love treasure planet maybe its for the best it doesn't get a sequel cause disney doesn't exactly have the best track record when it comes to sequels

Future for Treasure Planet? Nope. Especially the voice actor that did Silver is dead. No actor, voice actor or professional big star, can replace that man
I'd like to see to more Treasure planet universe productions, in a way like saturday morning cartoon or a movie, but at the same time, it is wholesome and finished thing of its own. Don't get me wrong chaps, for example i *crave* for Zootopia sequel as i am pretty much WildeHopps rotten shipper, and in the same time i'm freakkin' scared sh!tless if it's not going to be as good as original or if this ship won't fly. Zootopia is much like Treasure Planet, a finished and wholesome production.
I feel like I'm the only person who dislikes and avoids all pixar. There isn't 1 pixar that I have liked and have forgotten to time. Toy Story being my #1 I'll leave the room over. Can't stand it, never have.
a better live action movie id like to see is Atlantis the lost empire. however ill sat treasure planet is my favorite movie because it pretty much is as old as I am. I am 20 days older than its release date
I think I am the only person in the world who is glad that Treasure Planet failed financially. Treasure planet is SUCH a good film, the characters, writing, and pacing are all top tier imo. The ending was perfect, although there is always room for more adventures for Jim, that's all it really should be. The pitched sequel is... awful. Shoehorning in a love interest to make the obnoxious "enemies to lovers" rom com trope, bringing Silver back into the story (which COMPLETELY negates the ending of the OG film) to go on a wacky adventure that would have been worse animation, more than likely different voice actors and a forced plot line that would have felt so.... wrong in the world... I'm so glad that movie doesn't exist. I know my opinion of this matter is not a popular one, and I still find it so weird that everyone I ever talk to says that Treasure Planet is underrated (By the sheer amount of people that say that, it tells me it isn't underrated at all...) But I love what we have and am so glad to NOT have the cancelled sequel. Do I wish this movie hadn't bombed? Yes of course, I love 2D animation and part of the reason I changed careers was because I don't particularly care for the lifeless 3D animation. But I'm not sad that the sequel never came out.
So, would YOU have been a fan if Treasure Planet became a franchise?
Not sure.
This was a HUGE shock to find out
Absolute yes, all the universe to explore litterally.

But I'm not sad that the sequel never came out.
i prefer 2d
