Honestly this movie reminded me a lot of my Dad and I when I got into NYU against all odds. He was against me going. He was scared of me getting hurt. We actually had a big fight in regard to me going. Both of us love each other a lot so it was difficult to be apart even for a big change like that. But we got through it. He supported me 100% and we became even more of a team than we already were.
This film really captured how realistic it is to have this struggle and I always tear up at the part when Katie and her Dad finally understand each other and sing Live Your Life together.

Slight correction: Gravity Falls wasn't Mike Rianda's show, he was one of the directors on it, but the show was created by Alex Hirsch (who was a story consultant on Mitchells and has a cameo voice role). The film is also co-directed by Jeff Rowe who was one of the writers on Gravity Falls and later went on to direct Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. Other notable gravity falls alumni who were involved include Matt Braly (Amphibia) and Dana Terrace (The Owl House) who did some storyboarding work but went uncredited.

Just adding my two cents here, but after this film dropped a lot of Neurodiverse people adopted both Katie and Aaron as Neurodiverse representation, and as an autistic person, I feel a lot of kinship in Katie specifically. This film means a whole lot to me, as Katie's relationship with her father is very much a mirror to that of my own, to the point I tried using this film to talk to my father about things. It... didn't work, but, I really did try LOL.
It was never confirmed, but there's so many signs that can be read as these characters being Neurodiverse, and I loved this movie's messaging about being "weird". It's very much a comfort film for me.

    Wild robot,
    Transformers one,
    TMNT Mutant mayhem,

Puss in Boots the last wish,
And of course, Spiderman into the spiderverse.

Man, there really is a lot of duality in these comments. The contrarians at the bottom are just saying that it's completely mid with nothing to like about it and claiming that it just has a "spider-verse coat of paint" even though it clearly has a different art style, meanwhile the fans at the top are often claiming that it's one of the best animated movies period, if not the best animated movie of the decade.
Personally I give it at 8/10. It's pretty great, but some of the outdated internet humor definitely holds it back a little. I especially appreciate that the lead being gay was treated as a normal thing instead of being stuffed in some romance plotline. Don't get me wrong, I love all good representation, but it's nice to have the gayness represented as just being a normal part of life without it having to be the center of attention, because that's what it is, normal, and I hope we can reach a point of acceptance where we don't need specific representation anymore.

I watched this movie on a plane while going to Japan, the summer before my freshman year. I'll be honest: I cried at the end. It's so... perfectly relatable. It's hilarious. It's awesome. It's so heartwarming. It perfectly captures that struggle to feel accepted and respected. This is one of the greatest animated movies I've ever seen, And I truly hope the revolution Spiderverse caused never stops if it gets us more movies like this.

The vibrant, expressive, and stylistic animation, the engagingly intense yet zany action sequences, the witty and clever writing style, and the heartfelt theme about family and being yourself appeals to me on so many levels. Plus Katie being an aspiring filmmaker with lots of creative endeavors who just wants to share her art with the world is super relatable to me.

this movie really makes me feel, not only with how I relate to the characters and how those relationships are reflected of my own life, but just how I came to know this move. sure its how to say that I don't relate to Katie as someone who was and to a degree the same age as her going through a similar struggle of family dynamics and just college. but I also think fondly about when and how I got to know this movie. I don't remember who but I'm pretty sure one of my friends had either watched the movie itself or just heard of it somehow. either way it became a small watch party over discord one night and all of us loved it. for some time I think we quoted it every so often (an we still might even if we don't realize where the funny line came from) and I think I watched it twice? maybe because I wanted to show someone who wasn't able to be there on the first watch or because we just loved the movie that we watched to watch it again. who knows, maybe it a combination of both. either way, I still think back to that night and that watch party with a smile. maybe I'll try to convince them to watch it again one of these days soon

As a gay guy who was, at the time, somewhat looking into colleges to go to, (spoiler alert: I'm not even in college anymore, I dropped out after a year LMAO) it was definitely one of those movies I needed to keep myself going and to eventually make it out of high school. Maybe one day I will make it into my dream college without having to deal with financial stuff, but until then, the most relatable thing in that entire movie to me was the bit at the end where it is explicitly revealed that Katie is in fact a lesbian, not an American. That whole scene just solidified my love for the movie even more. I loved her family dynamic, especially the mom who goes psycho near the end of the movie over the love for children, an A++ mom reaction IMO.

Have you seen the TMNT mutant mayhem one? I'm pretty sure that came out more recently and it was pretty good, and Puss in boots the last wish is an absolute must see, a legend in the animation community

katie being lesbian, and not acting stereotypical, or looking stereotypical, or bringing it up constantly, or having her parents bring it up constantly is how representation SHOULD be done.
make a good story, with fleshed out characters, and a central arc that can generally be related to by anyone, then add in a multitude of personality traits that all blend into a complete person. with one of those many traits happening to be sexuality.
rather than the modern hamfisted approach of constantly adding in scenes to keep spelling out over and over a persons sexuality or race or what have you. especially in marketing, the buzz lightyear movie and strange world were so heavy handed in marketing the nonstandard sexualities that i still dont really know the plot of either movie beyond 'gay love story'

I honestly didn’t like much of anything about this movie, the style was trying too hard to resemble Spiderverse that it was frustrating, the characters annoyed me, the dog was bloody frustrating and the concept for a dumb dog are overused, the only good thing was the effects and the animation itself, and the only characters I liked were the two robots

Yet, those jackasses at the Oscars gave the Best Animated Feature to DISNEY that year, when their film wasn’t all it cracked up to be due to their psychotic dependence on toxic relatives/generational trauma/no villains. Disney should go bust for all I care.
