@@Nal-Nation But it didnt really feel like forced for me it juust felt like something a film student in this times obsessed with memes would edit in thier movie
One thing I noticed people saying about this movie was that the memes were old and that made the movie cringey. Honestly, those memes were so old they weren't cringey, they were nostalgic, and that added to me liking the film even more
I think the best way to add "pop-culture references" without being outdated as soon as production ends is making it a "period piece" set in a specific year (like Back to the Future). Say, if the movie was specifically set in 2012 and full of 2012 memes, the "cringe factor" goes way down...
you can see how much Sony evolved from Emoji to this the emoji movie: alienated gen z, souless bodies walking around, trying to be trendy and funny, but failing miserably by misrepresenting emojis as belived culture the mitchells: a weird family struggling to keep up with the pace of technology, but willing to change and save the world and their relationship
My god I forgot that they even made the emoji movie. It is wild how far they have come and really shows what can happen when you actually put love and care into the movie. When I saw sony animation on the opening credits I was pretty hype like oh this is gonna be a treat
Bruh maybe this wasn’t my kinda humor but we (my sister and I) only laughed when it was unintentionally dumb. I was literally being forced to watch it >:(
Between this and "Spiderverse," Sony is really upping their game in the animation industry. This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in recent years, especially the stuff with Monchi.
I've watched the movie, only problem for me was *Eric and Deborahbot 5000 didn't get the screentime they deserved. Personally my favorite characters in the movie.*
When father leans closer to the daughter saying how they’ll be together in a close space for hours and hours during when they pack for the road trip was my favorite part. His eyes just goes more insane every second.
I'm so glad that this film didn't push a "technology bad" or "the future is now old man" message. It's about meeting your loved ones half-way, and I really appreciate that. As long as Sony keeps getting talented directors and writers on board, we can expect great things in the future.
Fun fact: when sound recording was invented, contemporary composers such as Arthur Sullivan and John Phillip Sousa *hated* it. It’s funny how human nature doesn’t change, huh?
The visuals are amazing imo, it's like the personality of a comic turned into 3D The movements seem natural and realistic but remain cartoony in nature and the faces look vaguely cell shaded in a way you can barely tell but still has an impact The robots don't look stupidly impractical either like most movies of this kind tend to make them look
Idk why I haven't seen other people saying this but the art style really reminds me of like. Those late elemementary-middle school graphic novels like smile or babysitters club. Some influences from even big Nate or Captain underpants or wimpy kid.
@@lacytheespeon517 yeah, with the way the doodles followed katie, it’s like that thing they do in movies like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, where they put the drawings into real life
I think that's a lesson they took from Genndy Tartakovsy. When he directed "Hotel Transylvania," he didn't just want to "copy reality" using 3D. He wanted characters to move in cartoonish ways, because, well, it's an animated film! I assume the people at Sony Pictures Animation also learned a lot with the Spider-Man movie.
Out of every characters in the movie, I love the two friendly robots Eric and Deborahbot (I think that's their names) and that one scene where they're just playing patty cake in the background was so cute And Linda, I love that scene where she just goes sicko mode to those robot
plsss all three of those characters deserve more attention immediately recognized Beck Bennet from SNL as Eric and Maya Rudolph as Linda - great casting!!
@@ourgoldenspires Yeah, the message wasn't "phone bad book good" it was "we aren't using phones to connect with other people the way that we could" which is a better, less general message.
Yeah I feel like it also (in the narrative it’s self) is supposed to seem like it’s gonna end sooner then it does. Because the character assume after they find the mall and the helpful robots that everything (for the most part) will now be fine. That’s my theory at least.
@Jotaro Kujo I would say it's pacing was moderate considering I didn't felt bored or lack any interesting content throughout the film and the laptop failing caught me surprised. However, the movie for me was a bit too long (almost 2 hours) bc I think it's a bit too long for fun family movie. The art style is amazing and it's a nice breath of fresh air
@silent night It was on purpose. Same thing they do with a lot of young male animated characters, for example: Dipper from Gravity Falls. It’s just to fuck with audiences and add an comedic affect.
Yeah, a lot of people hate on it but I honestly think it makes for some funny scenes. It definitely adds to the comedic affect for me and I feel like it also boosts the more mature moments.
"Connected" would be the *Disney* title. Disney makes one-word titles that are also a vague (yet still somehow ham-fisted) allusion to the theme of the movie, designed to make the audience feel clever when they "get it" - therefore triggering the reward center of their brains, leading to addiction. "Oh...so she was FROZEN, like, metaphorically n shit. I M smrt."
The father was the best part of this whole movie. My favorite part is when he destroys the phones and tablets than tells the family that it is for their safety, only for him enjoying it way too much XD
I think one of my favourite parts of the film is how they acknowledge that most of the bad things that technology can do for us only happen when they are misused and under regulated by humans, and how much good they can do when used well. A lot of this type of movies normally go with the old “technology bad” type of argument, and it’s so refreshing to see something like this
I feel like tropes are moving towards this message; technology is here, it isn't going anywhere, but let's look at the positive aspects it can bring". Kind of like what The Creator did.
Honestly, this movie made me cry my eyes out. My dad died suddenly back at the beginning of March and all I could think about was me and my dad. I related so heavily to the characters and all the things I'm gonna miss doing with my dad. Sorry guys, I'm a sap
I thought this was going to be a goofy movie all the was through, but it had such a good message about family and human connections that I got the feels.
I'm with you, I have never had a stable family. All of my father figures were pretty trash except for one who's trying his best but has many flaws, and I only have 1 family member who is connected by blood who I'm close to. So this movie really, really spoke to me and I was really able to connect to it. Despite the cringey internet jokes. Those were kinda painful at times
@@nasirreii Idk, I didn't fell like those were completely out of place personally. Except maybe the part when the whole family is cat filtered and then again it was meant to be lame
The moment the movie came out on Netflix my sister barged into my room and really said “WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH ME”. We watched it and I love it so much due to the humor and the round ass dog
I think you mean pig or was it a dog no pig for sure but might smell like dog no no wait i remember it was a loaf of bread the whole time haha silly bread.
I just noticed that the dad character looks like Karl Hess, a famous survivalist and anarchist who loved tools and the wilderness. The dad has his beard style, his glasses, his moustache, even sort of his outfit. It actually kind of makes sense based on how the character is.
My son turned this on the other day and I was pleasantly surprised. I would like to see more animated movies that share the energy this film has that allowed it to take full advantage of its animated medium
Rick and Katie at the start of the movie are basically: Rick - "I don't want the big dangerous world to crush your dreams!" Katie - "It doesn't need to - you just did." And at the end: Rick - "Alright, give it a shot. But if it fails, I'm still here." Katie - "That's all I ever wanted." And the fact that they made every high concept, and high-octane action sequence, and every joke serve that shift in viewpoint made this movie for me. It could have been so disjointed, but because they oriented everything else around that relationship it works perfectly.
Ikr I actually caught my dad tearing up at some point while watching it which is extremely rare and that tells me this movie can connect with the audience on a emotional level. It could also be bc I’m starting college soon and I have similar interests to Katie and my dad has similar interests to Rick. (Sorry this was so long lol)
Between this and Disenchantment, I think we have learned that Eric Andre is a competent voice actor who spends his time body checking desks and vomiting and then eating it
It’s Pixar’s movies that they’re letting release normally on Disney +. Not sure why they feel they need the extra cash for their native Disney projects. It’s such a turn-off.
@cheese nipples SO MANY. Argh. I think Amazon Prime is the worst; they have a bunch of extra packages for HBO or whatever. Hulu has a Live package, but I can't remember if there are any others.
i hope the hs class of 2020 feels seen in this movie - how the world was in a catastrophic state as katie was trying to head off to college & she still had to go and act like everything was normal lol
There's one episode where he gets his voice changed by a potion to make it deeper, that may be where the clip you saw is from, I myself never found dippers voice that noticeably out of proportion with his size or age.
I like how everything was important! Rick gives everyone screwdrivers as gifts? That's important! A wooden moose? That's important! The video Katie makes at the start of the movie? That's important!
What l really like about this movie is that they gave representation. Katie has her quirks and issues. But when they bring up her sexuality. It isn't a big deal; it just a part of her that gets mentioned time to time. Which is important because people's sexuality isn't their whole personality.
i like how they made subtle hints towards it instead of just throwing it at the end out of nowhere, to me it feels more authentic. i noticed the rainbow pin on her jacket, and while of course it could’ve been nothing more than a regular pin, i was pleasantly surprised to have my suspicions confirmed by the end of the movie! this last part may be just my wlw self projecting, but i also got the vibes from the way she talked about the girl she met from college before it was revealed they started dating lol
@@zombii.444 same here!! And one of the first times they introduce Katie she's under a rainbow with the lesbian pride flag colours! I definitely got ~vibes when she was talking to her friend and I'm so happy I've been validated haha
I genuinely loved finding out Katie and Jade were together. I was really hoping it'd be more than just a "haha gal pals" type deal, it was so like simple but I really loved it
The most unrealistic thing about this movie was Katie going to art school in California. Like girl, do you have any idea how stupidly expensive it is to go to school down there and how much the freaking dorms cost? You'd be spending more money for tuition and boarding than you'll make in 10 years as a graphic designer/animator. Unless your parents earn six figures a year (which they probably don't because her Mom's a first grade teacher and her dad's a...carpenter?) then the best you can hope for is living out of a car and eating noodles out of a cup for breakfast.
@@timtam3730 IDK, the mom fight scene really makes it seem like she knows how to fight. Maybe the money is from a previous job of hers where she fought a lot?
question is there'd have to be a sequel with them together. but what can you do in the sequel? the mitchells already saved the world... maybe pal had a backup program hidden away somewhere in the company mainframe (in case of emergency).
@@timtam3730 I'm assuming she got a scholarship to begin with, and I would hope that after saving the damn world she wouldn't have to worry about things like tuition or the cost of literally anything ever. o3o
Fun thing: Look at all of the backgrounds really closely, the vast majority are completely 2d on different layers so that the 3d models could Interact with it
Honestly I just really loved the passing line at the end with Katie and her friend being teased at “being a thing”, but that it came from a place of love and acceptance. That really hit home for me, personally. Would love to see the film again, with the rest of my family next time!

@@subifyouhatetiktokandreddit234 yeah, I was worried that they would interrupt/taint the viewing experience more than it did, but I'm glad they didn't go overboard with the cringe/uncanny humor. My thoughts exactly! I thought it was very entertaining, but also felt like it would "never end". Overall, would still recommend for the animation style alone ^_^
I can’t get over Aaron’s voice he looks like he’s 8 acts like he’s 12-15 and sounds like he’s 18-25 but for some reason it was weirdly satisfying and in my experience of movie watching the kids usually sound like a chubby two year old or an adult and I kept making comments about it the whole movie
Well, I'm betting the slightly broken family helped the mental maturity somewhat, even when hyperfixations are concerned. And hey, sometimes parts of puberty like voice changes and such just kinda slip through the cracks for guys (I wouldn't fully know though since I'm a girl, but my voice started deepining around when I was 11 or so, so it's not too far of a stretch)
My partner randomly clicked on this movie on Netflix and we were both glued to it instantly! It was such a great film with lots of emotion, laughter and even eye-opening messages. One of the best animated movies I've seen this year.

Spoilers: Me and my brother were watching this and the whole time he was like “When is he gonna talk about the Furbies?” And I had already watched the video, so I just nervously smiled at him as we continued to watch, knowing that you didn’t go over that part 😂
I noticed the Furby in the movie poster's background before I watched it. I would've been highly disappointed if they didn't put one in, and damn did they do far more with that than I anticipated!
Omg when Saber talks about the scene when Pal cuts the Wifi - “The old world is dead. To restore the wifi, we must make a sacrifice to the router!” That line was so out there, but had me laughing like crazy 😂
The Mitchell’s is literally my family. My brother would totally be looking through the phone book, calling random people, and asking if they like dinosaurs. And I am into film and production and want to go to film school. Oh, and my mom would totally only protect her ‘baby boy’ by defending him against robots.
I love that Katie is gay, and that's not her only or main character trait. They don't harp on it, they don't freak out about it, it's great. She's just a girl that happens to be a lesbian. THAT'S good representation right there. It doesn't need to be in your face.
something that made me immensely happy was the representation in the movie. katie's wearing a pride flag pin most of the time and at the end of the film, she ends up in a relationship with jade and? as a sapphic person this makes really glad because being they dont treat it like it's anything weird - it's normalized.
@@TucoTheKiller what do you mean shove it down your throat? disney is gross yeah, they're somewhat homophobic but still pander towards the lgbtq+ community during pride month but could you please elaborate on that? im genuinely a bit confused.
@@mothbugsy for example, when disney advertised the beauty and the beast remake every headline had "the very first openly gay character" which disney has done a thousand times
One of my favorite parts of the movie was when the mom and the dad were talking to each other after dinner and Katie and Rick's relationship. Linda: "We haven't had one good family picture because you two are always fighting!" *Shows multiple family photos where Katie and Rick are arguing in* Rick: "Well that one turned out well." *Points to a picture off screen* Linda: "That came with the frame!" *Shows picture of a photoshopped family in a frame* That part made me laugh so hard.
"Dog? Pig? Loaf of Bread?" The dog causing the robots to glitch was hilarious! And the furby scene could have been part of an entirely different horror movie, honestly.
Seeing Katie as a subtle LGBTQ+ character makes me happy, because it’s shown not as something that defines who she is, but that it just happens to be like another part of her. It feels natural, and it’s really healthy and heartwarming to see this kind of representation in media. As a member of the alphabet mafia, I wanna say good on Sony for the accurate and healthy representation! Disney could learn something from them lol (no hate to Disney, please don’t come for me)
Reminds me of the Hollow. There's is a scene about one character blaming another one for being a suck up for a girl. One replies back with "that's not possible. I literally can't! Because I'm gay" that his only line about his sexuality. It felt really natural, not like a massive insert. There was only a hint of the flag in his room. Just like stuff teenagers would have or do.
I really liked that too, as a lesbian I'm sick of it being the characters entire personality/plot focus, based around them coming out, or blink & you'll miss it (aka that optional two second scene of two female background characters kissing is star wars.) Anyway I think it was written & carried out really well. I hope to see more well balanced, nonchalant type representation in the future.

I think the best way to add "pop-culture references" without being outdated as soon as production ends is making it a "period piece" set in a specific year (like Back to the Future).
Say, if the movie was specifically set in 2012 and full of 2012 memes, the "cringe factor" goes way down...

@@JETS5 dirk, he showed up like twice he was in the college
Great voice acting 👏👌
@@JETS5 a giant furby
Who did Doug the pug voice?
My fav scene is when the robots they met the humans and they are like "oh no we are good normal people who do normal thing we also eat normal" (pushes orange on face) "....yum yum good" I love that part
Especially after they used their definitely not human containment gun to launch a dino head and break the wall; the context made it funnier.
The dinosaur kid is literally my favourite character of all time
Same
@@Domiitails your username is crack
Aaron you mean
The only good character in the movie along with the two good robots
People after watching this movie: "who knew furbies were so terrifying"
Tattletail: Am I a joke to you?
I miss Tattletail
Hands down the scariest part of the movie
i like how the movie namedrops multiple real life things, like youtube and furbies are even significant to the plot, the furbies attack the mitchells in the mall, and youtube is how the dad showed dog cop to the robots and helped defeat pal. theres also instagram like i give an F
Sacrifice the Cheeto President to the Wi-Fi router
@@lesb1anEvilWubb0x ex-President but yes - I agree 😂
Tbh the airlines fight commercial by the robots would make everyone laugh. Also Eric and DeborahBot5000 are best boys.
The Mitchell’s is literally my family. My brother would totally be looking through the phone book, calling random people, and asking if they like dinosaurs. And I am into film and production and want to go to film school. Oh, and my mom would totally only protect her ‘baby boy’ by defending him against robots.
I appreciate the suga pfp
I love that Katie is gay, and that's not her only or main character trait. They don't harp on it, they don't freak out about it, it's great. She's just a girl that happens to be a lesbian. THAT'S good representation right there. It doesn't need to be in your face.
YES THIS ^
@Alex Wells I think it’s too late for them lol
i loved that as well like the subtle references like the lesbian flag in her bed room, it adds layers to the character
I hate it
man i didnt even catch that while watching, dang
something that made me immensely happy was the representation in the movie. katie's wearing a pride flag pin most of the time and at the end of the film, she ends up in a relationship with jade and? as a sapphic person this makes really glad because being they dont treat it like it's anything weird - it's normalized.
I saw she was gay and i was like "cool"
Unlike Disney where they dead ass have to shove it down your throat and ask for the brownie points
@@TucoTheKiller what do you mean shove it down your throat? disney is gross yeah, they're somewhat homophobic but still pander towards the lgbtq+ community during pride month but could you please elaborate on that? im genuinely a bit confused.
Omg I didn’t even notice she was wearing the pin!
@@mothbugsy for example, when disney advertised the beauty and the beast remake every headline had "the very first openly gay character" which disney has done a thousand times
@Thefemalearrow I knew about the pride pin she had, but I actually did not notice that.
I wouod never have thought that the people who made the Emoji Movie will be challenging Pixar for quality
pixar is more emotional unlike sonys comedic style so idk about that tbh lol

One of my favorite parts of the movie was when the mom and the dad were talking to each other after dinner and Katie and Rick's relationship.
Linda: "We haven't had one good family picture because you two are always fighting!"
*Shows multiple family photos where Katie and Rick are arguing in*
Rick: "Well that one turned out well." *Points to a picture off screen*
Linda: "That came with the frame!"
*Shows picture of a photoshopped family in a frame*
That part made me laugh so hard.
HA i know right?
That came with the frame!
One if the funniest, and the VA definitely delivered the line perfectly
@@FandomFrenzy Yup haha
@@screebchese5034 IT CAME WITH THE FRAME
"Dog?
No, you're right, Disney seems really afraid. I expected something for Raya, but never mind
I really liked that too, as a lesbian I'm sick of it being the characters entire personality/plot focus, based around them coming out, or blink & you'll miss it (aka that optional two second scene of two female background characters kissing is star wars.)
Anyway I think it was written & carried out really well. I hope to see more well balanced, nonchalant type representation in the future.
"alphabet mafia" 🤣
Yeah! I love the fact that her sexuality isn't the only "personality" she has.
