Also, dissolving doesn't necessarily mean "disappearing". You're still washing this down the drain and who knows what tiny compounds or particles these wipes turn into. It's worth investigating.

I see what you mean! In most cases it’s still less waste than standard plastic packaging and most likely they can’t avoid individually wrapping it bc the formulation may not hold well if exposed to too much air or moisture. I do wonder which is less wasteful though: individual plastic wraps or one bag of plastic like makeup wipes usually come in.

      They react to any moisturizer

  • @AlexandraMorrow

I understand everyone’s gripe with the individually wrapped dissolvable wipes, but I know when I was creating a biodegradable plastic (long story) I ran into the problem of having to individually wrap that biodegradable packaging in cardboard or plastic bc when a material is biodegradable that means any sort of moisture it may be exposed to after creation can compromise its integrity. And then when I dug deeper into my research on what other people were doing (to see if they ran into this problem), they did! So until we can fix this problem, chances are things will have to be individually wrapped in some way bc otherwise it wouldn’t be safe to put on shelves. It’s still less waste so it’s a step in the right direction and even better would be to go with some kind of cardboard instead of regular plastic.

Word on the street for natural (kinky, curly) hair is that bentonite clay is negatively charged so it wants to bind with positively charged stuff. The idea is that if you have hard water, it can bind to and remove mineral deposits, trace metals and build up of products from the hair because it can absorb so much more than it's weight when mixed with water. For folks using thick creams and oils, it is supposed to remove buildup that prevents fresh products from getting to the hair shaft, making sure your moisturizing products or the deep conditioner actually work. Lots of folks do add in their favorite oils, glycerin and I think I've even seen a DIY recipe with honey in it to help with the drying nature. This is what the blogs and advice columns say and I think it works for me that way. One of the home remedies I'm torn on bc if they do more official studies I feel like the price is gonna go up and I love some affordable volcanic ash! Lol

I apply some on the spot where I was bit asap and the bite is usually less itchy and shrinks way down by the next day. That oil blotting hack makes zero sense because sunscreens are still moisturizers. They’re just moisturizers with sunscreen filters in them. Of course they’re going to produce some kind of moisture on a blotting paper after time.
As for the clay mask in the hair hack. It’s supposed to be a way to clarify your hair and scalp by absorbing any buildup. That said there’s plenty of products designated specifically for your hair to do that. Even ones with clay and charcoal already in them. I wouldn’t use the clay mask on the hair because you have to use so much and it can clog up your pipes when you wash it out.

Another thing is some ppl could have cheilitis or angular cheilitis (AKA angular stomatitis/ perlèche).
Saliva can cause cracked lips - that's why they say don't lick your lips! - and chronic angular cheilitis (when you get the painful cracks on the side of your mouth) and that makes them prone bacterial or fungal infections.
It's usually caused by saliva due to medications, thrush etc. I have Lupus and my weak immune system coupled w vitamin deficiency and meds causes cheilitis. which is treatable with xylitol gum or mouthwash than a barrier on the lips like petroleum or coconut oil to keep the skin hydrated + ur fav moisturizer. Good skin care is very important.
If you keep getting cheilitis you'll need to see a dermatologist to get medical creme and testing.

      1) I put Vaseline on my lips before brushing my teeth and AGAIN before washing my face. Protecting them from surfactants and toothpase was a game changer (thanks to DermAngelo for those tips!)
      2) I switched my toothpaste to one that's less minty. My lips HATE mint. In fact, my current toothpaste is actually marketed to kids (but still has the full amount of fluoride)
      3) Every hydrating serum that goes on my face also goes on my lips. Moisturizer too. Then, on TOP of all of that I layer CeraVe Healing Ointment at night.
      4) No actives like vitamin c, AHA/BHA, or retinol near my lips. Again, I protect my lips with Vaseline before putting on my actives.
      4) GENTLE scrubbing. I do this every other day in the winter, 1-2x/week in the summer. Sugar-based lip scrub products are fun and effective, but a washcloth also works.
      5) Lip SPF was a big problem for me for ages. Finally found the Rohto Mentholatum Melty Lip Cream SPF 25 PA+++. It's the only one I've found that's ACTUALLY hydrating, doesn't sting, doesn't leave a cast/tint, doesn't taste awful, and doesn't have any mint/menthol/eucalyptus! A godsend! Bonus: it has fragrance free, vanilla, and...wait for it...matcha versions available! I'm obnoxiously obsessed with the matcha, especially considering the antioxidant boost it gives!
So... basically the core of the "secret" is a crapload of petrolatum. I cannot wait for the day there is an equally effective alternative that doesn't come from petroleum. For now, I just remind myself it's a BYPRODUCT of oil refining, not the actual reason corporations ate destroying habitats.

Similar to the paper vs plastic vs reusable bag debate, the cost and waste from production combined with its use afterwards make plastic bags actually "more environmentally friendly" in its whole life cycle. Lol the towel and Vaseline trick is what I've been using for years! I used to have a problem with chewing on my lip in my teens and figured if there was no dead skin to mess with I'd do it less. At night, put a thick layer of Vaseline on your lips (Chapstick is really good if you want to stay inexpensive but hate sticking your fingers into pots like I do) and go to bed. In the morning, wipe it off with a warm damp washcloth and apply your normal lip balm. Don't forget to reapply throughout the day!
I still mess with my lips sometimes, but definitely way less than I used to.

Lip care products are going to form a layer over your skin, to maintain the moisture there already. BUT if your lips are notoriously dry (like mine, thank you adhd meds 🤡), you will need to ADD moisture in first to “speed” up that healing! Add bit of water/lick your lips, THEN APPLY YOUR LIPBALM/MASK!!!! You’ll be AMAZED 😩🤣 we do it to our faces when we moisturize (knowingly, or not), BUT we forget all the “rules” and science when we move on to other parts 😂

Regarding clay; apparently you can wash your hair with it as it has cleansing abilities, it binds to the oils and other type of dirt I think. I even once heard it's chelating but I don't know if that's true. I've also only used (German) Healing clay so that's probably different to bentonite clay.

Not gonna lie I'm kinda curious about what exactly do those wipes end up dissolving into(?. Like, obviously the wipe is still chemically there so I'm curious to know if the dissolved chemicals are safe for the ocean or if they just contribute to pollution anyway and it's just takes away that extra step of an item dissolving in the ocean.

Bentonite clay works fantastically on the oily patch on my scalp. I use up any masks I don't like that way.
However, I only massage it into my scalp for around 30 seconds and do it once every week or two weeks.

  • @leftalone9881
    @leftalone9881 Год назад +1

Bentonite clay that isn’t mixed with vinegar to lower the pH is only incredibly compromising to the hair and skin. It is more basic than baking soda, and the hair and skin needs to be slightly acidic. It’s very damaging on its own. Yes it may look good visually, but chemically it’s destroying your hair. You can completely lose texture. Any “oh my hair got curlier” is temporary and related to sucking moisture out of it. Don’t do it without changing it’s pH first.

I have a caolin clay shampoo powder. You add water and make a mud and rub it in your scalp. It’s supposedly a mechanical shampoo. It sort of works but it’s messy to use.
It has proven quite useful when my cats have a mystery stain that I don’t know it is and don’t want them to lick it clean . The clay is good at absorbing and mechanically removing those stains , which is good, since trying to bathe my cats would end up with me being clawed to death. And the residue clay is not harmful to them.
