I worked for a dermatologist earlier this year who told his patients with acne to stop moisturizing their skin. He said this would "dry out their skin as much as possible to clear their acne." I was floored lol. Not all dermatologists know what they are talking about.

I think the derm meant that for patients with excess sebum production it’s important the sebum gets controlled so it’s advisable to consume acne meds as prescribed without other interruptions unless the derm encourages the patient to moisturise too especially if the patient got bad side effects such as cracked bleeding lips otherwise it’s still fine

The derm wanna see the progress whilst adjusting the dosage of prescribed meds so it’s better without interruptions/variables.

My first Derm told me the same thing, I suffered with horrible acne and angry, irritated destroyed skin for years. My second put me on Accutane and completely changed my skin- BUT- misdiagnosed a melanoma and told me it was nothing. I wasn’t happy with the way she handled my scalp psoriasis, so I went to a third Derm, who immediately diagnosed and removed my cancer, then had to go in again since it had spread. He also showed me how much my skin needed moisture, and got rid of my psoriasis and is a great doctor. I have a family history of melanoma, my great uncle died from it, and saying “Nah! It’s nothing you’re only thirty!” Is beyond unacceptable, and they’re everywhere. If your gut tell you your Derm or Aesthetician is an idiot, believe it. My first Aesthetician told me to exfoliate daily with baking soda, OMG.😂 I decided to study skin myself and find my own bloody answers, and at 43 I’m happier with my skin now than in my 20’s.

The sunscreen lady really pissed me off! I feel like anyone who even vaguely knew of the suntan craze in the 70s could understand how sunscreen was not the culprit. Correlation does not equal causation. If sunscreen was what caused the huge spike in skin cancer, then our numbers would have continued to spike through out the 80s and 90s!

Oxybenzone does however cause coral reef bleaching, as the coral converts it into toxins. It can also kill off green algae and that's not good as most of the earth's oxygen comes from algae in the ocean. So, wrong rationale but still important to avoid these chemical sunscreens when at the beach if plan on getting in the water.

Ugh…the lady saying the reason for the uptick in skin cancer cases from the 70’s is sunscreen is infuriating. Like…ma’am…the reason is because people used to slather themselves in oil and sit in the sun for fucking hours multiple times a week!! My mother said growing up they’d use tanning oil and be out all day and she’d be brown like a rotisserie chicken. Like come on.

    • @LifeInPink999
      @LifeInPink999 Год назад +3

This woman does look brown like rotisserie chicken to be fair I would have said ''it's her problem'' if I know by fact that no one will listen to her.
I personally always use SPF +50 minimun given that my mother had melanoma I have higher probability to develope one and even had to make a biopsy in one case (thankfully it was nothing), we both also have regular checks with the dermatologist (they basically register/scan every single birth mark one has to compare it to future results, I forgot the name of the procedure) .
Some people believe the entire thing is an exaggeration or paranoia and like to roast at the sun all day, while my mother didn't (we have a very fair skin and ''burn'' easily) yet she still developed it, probably because while she used sunscreen before the incident she didn't use it in her daily life often enough, in her case it was detected just on time, in my eyes, by almost a miracle because she went to see a doctor because of a back pain, he saw it and directed her to a dermatologist immediately.
It's quite scary to think about it, because if he didn't notice it or passed it as a birthmark I would not have my mother now, it's not even a ''maybe'' it's a fact.
Not all doctors are so attentive and more if it's not their specialty, in my mother's case it was just sheer luck she had that back pain.
So whoever reads this please don't listen this ''umpa lumpa'' lady who doesn't deserve to wear a white coat, use sun protection and watch your birthmarks, if in your back ask a familiar to check it.
Apologies for my English, it's not my native language.

That I look like I'm sick, or similar stuff, and everyone thinks I'm a crazy conspiracy theorist when I tell them how bad the sun and tans are for your skin and that that's why I don't do it. Even my own mom, who has sun spots and knows people who have died from skin cancer, still gets extremely upset because she can't tan as much as others because she's also very fair, and proceeds to spend hours outside tanning. She says it's okay because she wears sunscreen, but if you're getting a tan then that means that sunscreen isn't doing anything for you.

As someone who was actually born in the 70s, I clearly remember that sunscreen wasn't actually much of a thing back then. The products that existed were much lower SPF than what we have now. Also, tanning oil was super popular. They had an SPF factor listed, usually 2 or 4😱 Anyhow, I think that had a lot more to do with higher instances of skin cancer rather than the presence of oxybenzone. Whoops, should have continued watching before I commented 😂

@@AngryCandy89 Yeah, even in the 90's you were using the lowest concentration you could get away with. Basically, sun protection was only for beach and being out in the sun the whole day, and it was only to prevent you from burning. Everybody wanted to get tanned, and SPF was used simply to avoid burns - not to avoid getting tanned.

Baby oil and aluminum foil. That's what my friends used for tanning in the 70s and 80s. They'd grease up with baby oil, then make screens out of aluminum doil covered cardboard to reflect the sun right on their faces. Suntan lotions back the focused on getting you as dark as possible, not on protecting your skin. Fortunately for me, I found out early on that I'm allergic to mineral oil (baby oil); I didn't need any help getting tan so no foil for me; and I hated laying out in the sun. Didn't like getting hot and I was bored out of my skull within 15 minutes and quit doing it before I was 16. (And only tried it a couple times each summer before that, figuring it'd be different this year. Nope. Not a tanner!)

My mother just went through several painful, scary Moh's procedures to address basal cell carcinoma. She's doing very well, but any cancer is extremely frightening for the whole family. Several of the patches were on her scalp. I want to SCREAM from the rooftops! It doesn't matter what color you are, we are ALL vulnerable! PLEASE USE SUNSCREEN!!! Reapply often. Screw the naysayers. There are literally hundreds of varieties to choose from, so if you don't like one, try another. It has never been easier to access high quality sunscreens from all over the world - South Korea, Australia, Japan, Europe - go get some! Buy it, use it and reapply so you don't die. Also, wear a hat. My mother has always been very active, but she didn't bother with sunscreen. She's going to have to get checked regularly for the rest of her life, but it's worth it to stay safe. All of this was preventable.

I freckle like crazy and burn. Sunscreen is a must. When I went to my 20 year high school reunion, I had so many of my female classmates asking me how I have kept my skin looking so youthful. That's one of the biggest tips I could offer. I avoid the sun and wear sunscreen when I have to be in it. Of course, when I told them, they started saying they just couldn't stay out of the sun like that. I mean, it's not like I'm a hermit. I do go out. She says there are lots of fungal acne triggers but dosen't actually say what any of them are. There's also no reason that this moisturizer would clog your pores, nothing in it is particularly comedogenic. Breaking out is an individual experience, you can break out from the use of a product tons of other people have no issues with if your skin just dosen't like one of the ingredients so you can't really tell someone that a product probably will or probably won't break them out, unless they're acne prone and in that case, some ingredients aren't the best.

The “cardinal sin” of sleeping in your makeup applies more to makeup you’ve been wearing all day that has accumulated dirt, grime, and sebum. Since makeup and skincare are mostly made of the same ingredients, wearing new makeup to bed every once in a while is not that bad.

Also a great way to get product stuck under your eye lids. And, if you're prone to sweating, youre going to have sweat, oil, dirt, + makeup in your pores from sleeping with multiple hours of oil on your face and youre going to carry that on your face for who knows how many hours after waking up. It's like how micellar water won't work if you don't put it on cotton; lab muffin did a great explanation of how dirt is just different lipids and the lipophilic ends of the micellar water, whilst the phobic ends attached to the cotton, attract/ pick up on the dirt and clean your face.

I think the misconception with silicone is because it's not great in hair shampoo if you want to colour your hair. It can leave a residue in the hair cuticle which prevents certain colours from penetrating the cortex and working. Thank you for the awesome videos!

As someone with a UV allergy because of an autoimmune disease, sunscreen disinformation is my biggest pet peeve. I hear it constantly because I practically bathe in sunscreen.

When I first got into skin care I followed this misinformation (ingredient websites and people who give advice based on them). I missed out on so many great products that have since made an extremely positive impact on my skin. You’re approach has really changed my skin, so thank you!!

I'm a Gen X'er who grew up in the 1970's with sun worshippers. My neighbor girls would coat themselves in Crisco and sit up on their roofs for hours on end. I never used sunscreen during those days, but I also never went to those extremes.

This is why I don’t like to use tiktok for informational videos. There’s too vague of an explanation and the important research is missed. So glad to have you on youtube to stress how misleading “medical terminology” is on the internet

The whole thing about oxybenzone use cause an increase in skin cancer is a clear example of correlation does not equal causation. We are also getting better at diagnosing cancers earlier so you do expect to be higher than 1950s

Just found you! love your work and even got my kids to watch your show informative thank you I just wanted to make a note around 13 minutes maybe 20 seconds you mention about “ cheap” brands doing this scamming - it might be good to point out that “ expensive” brands do alot of trickery in labels as well ,as well as not the greatest transparency (but actually are getting better because of the Customers being more informed and demanding to know what is in stuff and demanding for that transparency ) 🎉but yeah just a little note there -you know It seems like a blanket statement because there are a lot of “cheaper” Companies that just are trying to get their packaging right then they’re trying to figure out what’s right for their formula, what the beauty community wants, and you know I wanna give them a little bit of credit -because not all companies just because they’re “cheap”, … are bad companies , or less well known companies ,( companies that can’t afford to advertise all over the world or might -I note- cover up anything or take people you know and cover up their lawsuits and just pay off the people that may be got injured from their skin Care line … so that’s good to point out that maybe the cheaper companies don’t have the money and time to spend in court because they’re trying to sell their product so yeah not to say that any companies are doing anything shadya little guys are trying to make it too you know and so yeah anyway- just a thought … cheers!

As a former esthetician, the important thing to keep in mind is that (like doctors, including dermatologists) not everyone is educated the same way. The most basic U.S. state program that qualifies you as an "esthetician" just teaches you the sanitation portion and basic techniques for massaging product into the face. They are expecting you to go on and work for a spa that will teach you how to use the product line, or possibly intern with a dermatologist that will train you into a medical esthetician. Then there are schools dedicated to training estheticians who get exposure to several machines, product lines, techniques, and even train on alternative methodologies and practices like ayurvedic skin care. Both of these schools produce the same class of esthetician with no distinction in your license. The difference is your employment opportunity directly after school, as most reputable spas that use machines for procedures will research your credentials in addition to certifying you on the specific machine(s) you will use. However, when it comes to advice, consumers have no way to see your schooling or experience, so make sure not to work in absolutes - most skin therapy is about trial and error - testing to see what works for the individual, then developing a therapy around that.

The dermatologist fake ad, ugh that one got me. just like the MLMs taking my before and after photos (even had my own sent to me by a hun showing her girl "Ashley's results" hahaha so annoying...) my before and after photos are from gastric bypass, tummy tuck and a boob job..followed by years of being chronically malnourished and now disabled on 28pills a day to stay alive (surgery at 17yrs old, 33 now).. not your skinny coffee or "fuelings" karen.

Glow recipe watermelon line is a lifesaver for my congested mature skin. Other products are not that effective for me.
Edit: also that alum block clip is harmful. I have made some bad choices in life, few very bad choices and then I used alum block. My skin is so oily that I can use almost any exfoliating acid without much harm but alum block cracked my skin, gave me rash. Not worth it.

My dad came to visit and managed to watch the clip about perineal tanning. He didn't even hear the bit about it being bs. I'm scared to look in the backyard, my dad might be out there naked trying to figure out how to get his feet over his head. I'm torn between gouging my eyes out with a spoon, or going after him with the pressure washer for a hydro colonic!

my mom lived in California and was an older teenager/young adult in the 70's, so tanning was biiiig. but she always wore sunscreen or some kind of protective cream/spray while doing it, she basically went to the beach every day next to these people who didn't wear it at all and did the same thing for HOURS. now a lot of those people either have severe sun damage and/or skin cancer from that, and my mom's skin is still tan (she's mixed..but the sun also made her appear darker) with little sun spots and natural freckles on her face, no skin cancer/issues at all. it's crazy to think taking an essential step in skin protection that has scientific proof for decades causes cancer.
also important note if you live on a sunny coast or lakeside, wear sunscreen even if you're under a cover/umbrella in front of the water. UV rays reflect off the waters surface and can still reach you, even though you're 'technically' not directly exposed under the sun, i see too many people say they don't need it in cases like this, but still get sunburnt or irritated from the sun..because of reflecting. cloudy days aswell, the rays can still penetrate through clouds.
