I've heard this censored on radio on the oldies station recently, but I grew up hearing the original.
Hearing it censored, It doesn't flow right 😭

I grew up hearing the censored version of The Doors' "Break on through to the other side." and now that they play the version with "she gets high" back in, it doesn't sound right. I don't know if they actually found a recording of him singing all the words, or patched in "she gets high" from a concert tape, but it sounds edited.

I’ve been looking for this version for years; was driving through Boston in 1991 and almost drove off the road when I heard it being played on the radio. Now I’ve learned the backstory behind it being censored but still can’t believe it was released on vinyl in such a short run. Thanks!

The reason it was a short run and is so rare is that it was pressed on a white label promo 45 sent to AM radio stations in some markets. The song caught on quickly and the single was pressed without the 'white boy' edited out.

Wow! Never knew of this censored version until today as some one on facebook's group **45rpm collectors (The little black circle )** mentioned it! Thanx for posting it.. (I have the original 45rpm (edited) but not censored 45rpm. Bought it when it was originally released.... ....Thanx again!

This version was included in US promo compilation called "13Q Presents Rocks", which was released in 1977.

It was on "1240 KROY presents ROCKS," also. AND it is on one CD I could find....I have not found any promo 45 with this version, however.

Just heard this version for the first time on Vinyl yesterday on a Ronco album called Disco Fever. Didn't know this version existed and it is weird.

Rob, I read that this version was made for a promo single edit version sent to AM radio stations in some markets (not sure if it was geographical or per a certain demographic) but obviously the real version caught on nationwide and single was pressed without the 'white boy' reference excised in the mix. I never heard the edit version until tonight. I guess some suit at the record label thought someone was gonna be offended. I always loved it and like a lot of kids at the time I thought you guys were black because you played and sang like the brothers. Average White Band fooled a lot of us too. :)

This version was included on the “Mega Hits Dance Classics” CD series, one of the very first disco compilations to come out on CD. That’s where I first heard this song at all and nice to know I got a rare version of it. The regular version has since showed up everywhere.

What a travesty of musical proportions! It's like pissing on the Mona Lisa. This is the Ecce Mono version.

Very different to hear it this way but it does keep the funk going strong! I prefer the original hands down but this is cool as a rarity!

Those of us who are white boys aren't offended. We know we're white boys. Now play that funky music the RIGHT WAY...

I guess they didn't want the original playing on school buses and provoking and "fighting words". The radio stations probably went along so they wouldn't get banned on buses, intercoms, etc. (The Stromberg Carlson intercom at Framingham North had 3 buttons for radio stations, one being WVBF).

Reminds me of when they used to play "Senses Working Overtime" on WFNX, with "buses might skid on black ice" cut out. From this video, it seems that might have been done for the U.S. single version:
