Thank You For The History of Williamson WV and Hatfield/McCoy We're(my Mt Airy N.C family) are distant relatives to both sides.. We're an Irish mountain people, tough and hardy.. sadly my mom a mountain woman through and through, tough and a fighter to her last breath, passed away in July(1946-2023).. she was there at my first breath,i was beside her at her last.. I love Appalachian history,
What great content I live in tazwell co va and grew up hearing all these stories of the bigger than life folks that lived near me back in the day. Great job keep it up you can tell you put in a lot of research and time into the stories which makes them all the better. I’ve always wanted to visit these sites since I’m so close but never have thank you for showing me all this history in my back yard. I’d love to hear some stories about the native people that lived here also. My new favorite channel!!!!
I was in Matawan and Williamson when it flooded in the 70s and I remembered the little tunnel u didn't go through I was a medic in the national guard we were sent there to help out I went everywhere I'm from Parkersburg a long time ago
I'm related to Doc Ellis. I descended from Owen Ellis Jr, and Doc descended from a different son of Owen Ellis Sr. Some of the Ellis family married into the Hatfield clan. My family left West Virginia around 1838 and moved to northern Missouri.
Can't believe that a judge would tell the jury that just because Elias Hatfield used words calling that other guy a sob would have anything to do with self defense! The other guy drew his gun & in my opinion Elias Hatfield had every right at that point to defend himself, new scriber here, as a history buff isn't there some kind of museum for there fued, be interesting to see some of their old firearms for public view. Nice channel 👍
What you don't understand is times were different back then, unlike now days, when you dishonored a man, even by name calling , you were treading on very dangerous ground . The SOB reference was in particular a bad choice as it referred to a man's mother . The Appalachian folks Code of Honor would not allow Doc to just walk away after he had publicly been called out. Had he done nothing he would have been labeled a coward. It was rooted deep in Scotch-Irish clan pride .
It was Norfolk and Western years ago. I dont remember the year they changed but it was when I was a young teenager I believe. Anyway thanks for the story
I seen the sign on the coal house about the seam I worked at crystal fuels it was 32 inches high it was up the holler at matewan football field it was a part of raw sales worked with some great people BJ Hatfield joe church Clarence Whitt that was about 2001
Your comment about goats brought to mind article I read. They were using goats as natural way to reclaim old cemeteries. They will eat up alot of under brush .
I'm related to Alex Messer one of the Hatfield crew who shot 13 Year old McCoy boy in the paw paw incident. Alex Messer was sentenced to life in prison.
We were in wheeling vacationing once and then to ogilbee for the Christmas light show I was always wondering about the feud and how it all started im glad there is a family to tell the whole story cartoons and hollywood does not always do it justice was Billy The Kid from wheeling?🤨🤔
Williamson home of the million dollar coal field and now it’s home of the billion dollar coal field but it is bought over go look at old pictures of Welch they called it little new York
Are those goats wild ? If so I’ve never heard of wild goats in the U.S. Well if the one guy would have ignored the other since they hated each other nothing bad would have happened
They would lie about it just like they did Jan. 6th & say "the attack was carried out by an extreme right-wing pacifist terrorist who hid behind an evil waycist gun & he shot a man who was ALLEGEDLY armed & did NOTHING wrong..." Not like the guy already had his gun out & POINTED at someone or anything... Just another "peaceful BLM protest", right? 🙄🤦♂️🙄...

Where’s your side kick at today I see that you climb that hill to the cemetery lol
He was there lol, he just didn't know this particular story
Didn't know you could build a building out of coal. I always thought it was too soft.

Did the River move? Or is it just flooded? Also, can you drive across that bridge?
You can't drive across it. The river was flooded

Not sure about Billy the kidd, but would love to look into it
my wifes best friend is from Welch Wa.
Here is the riffle reported to of been "cap Hatfield's" you may want to watch. ruclips.net/video/AY8nTE8iZ7A/видео.html
That house looks to modern for DAH to have lived in it. That house doesn't look 30 or 40 years old.
It's his homestead not necessarily his original house

Sounds like all the Hatfield's were born with " boiling blood".
Played that course

They aren't wild, just feral and some released by owners. Same as our horse problem here.
My grandpa supposedly shot someone over there in a bar supposedly the pistols is in tug river 😁
Very interesting! I'm not shocked though 😂
Devil was my 5x great grandfather according to ancestry dna.
Awesome
I wonder how the MSM would spin this feud if it were to happen today.
The nightly news report would probably start with .....
HURRAY ! THE WHITE SUPREMACISTS ARE KILLING EACH OTHER !
Prove me wrong .
They would lie about it just like they did Jan. 6th & say "the attack was carried out by an extreme right-wing pacifist terrorist who hid behind an evil waycist gun & he shot a man who was ALLEGEDLY armed & did NOTHING wrong..."
