Valdosta Mall : A (Not So) Dead Mall In Valdosta, GA [aka Titletown USA]

- When I stopped by Valdosta Mall, the only enclosed shopping center in a 75 mile radius, I didn't know what to expect. What I found was a clean and quiet space that defies the conventions of dead malls.

Putting aside the fact that it's the only game in town, I wanted to get to the bottom of why this place is surviving (even thriving) when so many local malls are dying. Welcome to Titletown, folks.

Since you filmed this video, Kay jewelers left, Chik Fil A is closing next week, and bed bath & beyond announced they are closing. I was in there a couple of weeks ago and several other small shops have closed. I worked at the JC Penney when I was in high school, and the mall was absolutely the place to be. Sad to see what it’s become.
Well you got bossa novas international cafe coming restaurant by American deli , fin and feathers restaurant coming soon, and Pandora .
@@jaywaymon8231bossa novas has left
So weird to find my hometown mall featured. It's sad to see how it's closed down over the years, but thankful for the memories I've had there.
Thanks for sharing. We stopped here to grab some lunch on a long trip in the Southeast. It was clean and nicer than our mall in Montgomery, Alabama (Easdale Mall ). Our city is much bigger than Valdosta with a population of over 200,000. Valdosta is lucky to still have their mall!
Enjoying your channel !
Thanks Pamela, I appreciate that! Funnily enough, I'll have a video (already filmed, just not edited) on Eastdale Mall in Montgomery coming to the channel in the next month or two :)
@@DeadMallWalking here is an update for the video. The ice rink has been permanently closed 🙁. They say they are going to make a roller rink out of it…..
@@pamelaaverrett5848 Thanks for that, Pamela! Honestly, when I visited it kinda looked like it was done even back then...I'll be sure to include this in the video though.
@@DeadMallWalking Hello, local of 20 years to the Valdosta area here, I believe that was a pretty fair video on the mall. I've always thought it could use some upgrading, but as you mentioned, with malls dying across the country, it may not be worth it. Thank you for showcasing somewhere that was a big part of my childhood, and still is somewhere I pop into when I need to pick up a few items. Safe travels.
I love this mall! Dispite the fact Chick-fil-A and other small stores have left the mall it is still strong. For some reason everytime I go with my family it is always full. Genuinely im very surprised it was not. 😄
Wow.....I went to this mall when I was at Valdosta State College in 1983..........right after it opened
Also, since the release of this video, the CFA is gone, Kay Jewelers has moved across the street, and the pop-up shop is a new jewelry store as well.
I was born, raised and work in Valdosta. It’s not looking good for the mall though. Thank you for pronouncing it correctly by the way! Go Wildcats!
You’re welcome, dude. Sad to hear the mall isn’t doing so well, and go Wildcats indeed!
@@DeadMallWalking it's doing very well five below coming 2024 and HomeGoods
It used to be a fun mall. It opened only a few months before we moved there when I was a kid in a military family
It's not somewhere I'll go every weekend but occasionally I'll walk through when I'm bored and want to kill some time. It's a lot busier during the post Thanksgiving period leading up to Christmas. If you have time, you should come compare the difference.
I'd love to come back some time if I'm passing. I don't doubt that this place can get busy, but obviously it's in my interest to avoid folks when filming in case there are kids around etc.
@@DeadMallWalking it gets busy around Thanksgiving and Christmas time super busy crowded
@@DeadMallWalking it's busy days are the weekends Saturday and Sundays
I don't if you are back in the UK or near Teesside but a shopping centre worth checking out is the Castlegate Shopping Centre in Stockton-on-Tees. The centre only has 4 stores that operate inside is to due to close soon as it's getting demolished.
Hi mate, this place is very much on my list to visit. I keep trying to make time for it and I'm concerned that, by the time I finally get to it, it will be closed. Don't suppose you have any inkling of how much longer it might remain open...?
It's nice to se a smaller mall doing so well
Agreed! And I wonder if not over-expanding is one of the reasons for its success...
I live here and it’s only because we have no other options lmao

One of my besties is from here, I’ve been wanting to visit there just to get that small town feel, thanks for the video ❤
You're very welcome. I'm not sure if the mall still looks like this, as the video was taken a while ago, but hopefully it gives you the vibe!
1:12 at the restaurant with the yellow walls. Mandarin Express.
The table next the trash can is where I officially understood my ex didn’t love me anymore.
Oh, that's kind of a sad story! I hope you've moved on, or have been able to start the process of doing so, since then.
@@DeadMallWalking
Been 2 years, I’m good.
@@seriousserialcereal5388 Glad to hear it, friend!
Same guy, different account.
Not a Madarin Express anymore.
And the chick fil a is gone.
Never liked the mall too much anyway. Not my favorite memories.
They are bringing a cinnabon to the mall soon
i was stationed there in 1999 and remember the floor being carpeted tiles.
Malls and carpeted floor, always a horrific decision 🙃
@@DeadMallWalking valdosta mall is getting a HomeGoods in 2024 and a 5 below
I went in the FYE often, really liked that store.
Don’t think you’d find as much relevant stuff in there now unless you happen to have kids!
@@DeadMallWalking they bringing a record store similar to fye
Lol, what time did you visit? I live here, go to this mall weekly. Just there 2 days ago and finding parking was an issue.
I think I mention in the video, but I believe I pulled up on a Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. No doubt, this place is a lot more lively than some places I’ve hit up!
@@DeadMallWalking On Sundays they're only open from 12 noon to 6pm, not mentioned in your video. Just FYI Sundays don't bring in crowds, due to many Valdosta residents thinking they're closed. That fact was told to me by several friends who work there.
I live in Valdosta ga
@@just_tbabypros: it’s a place to live
Cons: everything else
True Story about the Valdosta Wildcats: There was a Denzel Washington movie called Remember the Titans. It was based on a true story about a black coach who took over a failing football program soon after desegregation.
At the end of the movie, the blurbs before the credits stated that The Titans went on to be the Number 2 football team in the country that year.
Valdosta Wildcats were Number 1.
1:19 I used to work in that Chick Fil A
I think someone else remarked it's closed now, right? Which makes it being shuttered in this video eerily prescient...
@@DeadMallWalkingYeah, with having a free-standing Chick Fil A right across the street from the mall, I suppose it didn’t really make sense to keep it open.
@@DeadMallWalkingthe mall still has around 60 stores its still doing good
@@DeadMallWalkingit's not shutterd valdosta mall still standing strong around 60 stores
@@jaywaymon8231 I was referring specifically to Chik Fil A with the shuttered comment 🙂
Great video. Though I’m fond of 2 story malls it’s probably malls like these that aren’t too big for the surrounding community and don’t have any other competing malls nearby that may have the right recipe for survival. Many times when small malls like these that had a Sears close it signals it’s death knell. But because this mall wasn’t too big for the community and no competing malls in the area it survived the Sears grim reaper. I swear that Wall Street jerk that killed both K-mart and Sears should be in prison now. I was not a huge fan of Sears but it’s demise brought down a whole lot of malls.
😭 I used to go there all the time
I still go here just to play at the Fun Factory even though I live in Moultrie 😂
@@FurbyRestorer I’m in Florida I can’t go there often anymore
North Lake Mall and South Park Mall are top tier malls-some of the best in the country.
Oh nice! I'm not surprised that these folks have some good malls under their belts :)
You didn’t show the Buffalo Wild Wings in the parking lot. That’s the best part!
Dude, if I remember rightly that's where I ended up going for lunch!
Have you ever been to the Tifton Mall in Tifton Georgia?
I actually have! I posted a pic of my Instagram but didn’t have the time to film the whole place 😢
I thought Lake City had a mall. I am pretty sure it's less than 75 miles from Valdosta.
Looks like about 65 miles on Google Maps, so it may just sneak under the radar!
Lake City's mall is not a regional mall though if I'm not mistaken. I think it's a small, community, Hull Property-owned mall.
More stores have closed since and chick f la has left the mall. My daughter works at 2 stores in the mall. The rent there is outrageous, businesses are struggling. I see you didn't mention DFACS being part of the mall 😂😂
They are bringing a Cinnabon to the mall soon
What is DFACS?
There is supposed to be a new restaurant in the mall. You should visit during summer time.
I'd like to visit again! I imagine I'll be passing through again on a future trip, so hopefully then.
@@DeadMallWalking yes alot more is coming it's a top tier restaurant brunch spot coming in the back of the mall called fin and feathers it' comes out of Atlanta .
Titletown?
Yes indeed! Valdosta, GA has been known as Titletown since winning an ESPN contest back in 2008.

Im curious... did you film any parts of where the old movie theater within the mall used to be? I worked there in highschool and am dying to see what they remodeled that into!??
Unfortunately if it’s not in the video, I probably didn’t check it out 🙁 UNLESS I did film it but was unaware that it used to be the theater. Maybe another commenter knows!
How long ago was there a movie theater in the mall? I was born here and went to the mall quite often growing up and I don't recall a time when there was ever a movie theater in it. That is, unless it was only there briefly during the time I moved away.
Even that would be weird though considering there has been a movie theater at the corner of the same street the mall is on since the early 90s
