This place walks the line of being a dead mall - it's 60-70% occupied, but has a few issues. Among these are several incidents of gun crime in its recent history and the success of the nearby Shoppes at EastChase.
Eastdale Mall was sold to Namdar Realty Group in 2020, and it remains to be seen whether they're capable of overcoming these hurdles.

Update: since filming this video, I learned that the tenant I spoke with has closed her business and left the mall.
So sad she had to make the difficult decision to close the store her beloved husband started 😢
While I appreciate the tenant's frustration, the death of the mall has been going on for 25 years. COVID may have accelerated it but it was initially caused by two main factors:
1. Online Shopping: Now instead of browsing a catalog and waiting weeks for an order to arrive, you could browse a variety of retailers online and have your order in less than a week.
2. De-Malled Department Stores: Standalone or stripmall stores like Kohls, Target, Marshalls, TJ-Maxx etc. were able to thrive without being tied to mall.
The fact that many malls, like the one featured, are even still open is the bigger surprise to me.
I have mourned the mall, I hold dear the fond memories of malls in my childhood and I have moved on. I know in my heart that they will never be what they once were.
Both definitely factors. We have “retail parks” in the U.K., which are similar to the strip malls you talk about, and I think they really hurt enclosed malls. Which surprises me since, with the British weather and all, you’d think people would want to stay inside!
Nah lets get real...im from montgomery the death of the malls is ALL because of the violence and pieces of shit and crime of a certain fucking race...PERIOD
U didn’t mention how dangerous the mall has become
This mall was built to be bigger and better than the Montgomery Mall on East South Blvd. Eastdale Mall was the place to be in the 90’s to early 2000’s. Parents would drop their kids off. Then Montgomery Mall finally completely closed mainly due to gang related activities, theft, and not being safe after dark. I remember when I was 16, and could drive myself, my dad forbid me to go to the Montgomery Mall side of town. Which was weird because the house my parents brought me home from the hospital was only blocks away. It’s now Police Annex and Fire Station and at some point the Montgomery BOE almost bought it turn it into a High School. This is when all the trouble from Montgomery Mall slowly started heading to Eastdale Mall and because of this they built Eastchase Mall. Once it open Eastdale mall just slowly started to close stores and become what it is today. The fact that it is still open blows my mind. So many good memories there. I now only go there for Chuck E Cheese and that’s been 3-4 years ago. It’s kind of sad to see it like this.
I lived behind the mall when the area was just an open field and I played in my high school band at the grand opening of
the mall during the late 70's. Such a great time to be living in Montgomery. The mall was a great place then with lots of
families shopping and the ice rink was always packed with people. The food court was always packed and there were
many places to eat. Sears was still a viable place to shop for everything you needed and Gayfers was one of the anchor
stores and was thriving. R.I.P. Eastdale Mall.
Thanks for filming our mall in Montgomery. It used to be so much nicer. We even had a restaurant that had a train car you could dine in, it was called Twickingham Station.
I can see how people feel unsafe here, but I have had thousands of trips to this mall and it’s Ok. Just don’t go on Friday or Saturday night…
It was a pleasure to visit! Yeah, I posted some beautiful vintage pics of it on my Instagram and it looks more tired than it did then, but still fun to walk around. That’s cool about the train car restaurant!
Why not come Friday?
I remember as a kid walking from Gunter AFS along the railroad tracks to get the the Eastdale Mall to go to Aladdin's Castle arcade in the 80's.
Wow so even Chick-fil-a closed down in the food court. wow.
I remember that mall when I was a kid, back in the late 70's and 80's. It was a nice mall. It seemed like such a big mall when I was a kid, with a sears, Gayfer's, McRae's and I think at one point a Montgomery Ward. We moved to Nashville, TN in 1989 and I was so disappointed to see that our malls did not have an ice skating rink.
Haha, I can imagine that contrast must be strange if you grew up near one that did - “what do ya mean y’all haven’t got a skating rink?!”
@@DeadMallWalking It was a little strange for sure, but the malls here (All now dead too) were huge multi level malls, with several anchor stores. They were overwhelming on the first few visits. They have all since closed, some still sit vacant some redeveloped. but still, none had a skating rink lol
there aren’t many shop vacancies at the moment. it’s not always super busy, but there are days where you’d be shocked. looking just like the old days. you say it’s struggling, but it’s still here unlike all the other malls around it. and there are recent news stories saying otherwise as well
my parents have been with eastdale mall for over 16 years. each year i tell them to stop signing a lease and go somewhere else for a business, but each time they say that they have hope the mall will be busy like it used to be! lol
The problem for folks like your parents is that, unless they fully pivot to online retailing, it’s hard to know where else they should go. Downtown? Dead. Malls? Dying. At least it’s a tried and tested environment that they’re familiar with. Feel free to plug their business in a reply if you’d like, maybe some local folks would go and support them! All the best ✌🏻
I feel like those lights could set off epileptic seizures.
That’s an interesting point! I’m not exactly sure what type of lights they are - they’re not neon or strobe - but I hope that was taken into consideration when they were installed.
Ohh I love listening too that gorgeous soothing voice with an accent. Just dreamy ❤️❤️
Aw shucks, thank you, haha.
This mall definitely had a different, more lively atmosphere during the 80s and 90s, but the place has been declining steadily for the past decade. It appears a lot of the wealth has shifted eastward outside of what is called the Eastern by-pass as the area became more developed. In fact, there are restaurants (e. g. Outback Steakhouse) that recently relocated from the by-pass to the East Chase area, probably to maintain their market share, as numerous competing establishments cropped up in that area. Another contributing factor may be East Chases' easy access from Interstate 85 which bisects the city.
Wet Pets and Pups, Aladdin’s Castle, Cookie Co and Beads Etc were the best!
I used to go to this Mall Every Day Back In The 80s,90s, and Early 00s, to, after the Mid Or Late 00s, this Mall Started to go downhill after that, My Friends.
Think a lot of malls had the same fate! From 2008 onwards started to really struggle ☹️
Back in 2015/2016, I attended community college and was in the Jazz Band. Our instructor per our assignments, took us on tours to different malls, including Eastdale, where our band would set up near the food court and play a few scores of music up near the food court. Mainly for our grade and demonstrate our skills for concerts we’d host at the school, this was a unique opportunity to bring a little bit of life through the dead mall. I loved it and I miss doing that.
Was really wierd for me to see this. I live in montgomery.
No one really goes here on purpose. Most of the stores in the mall are available elsewhere too. And the other mall (Montgomery Mall) was taken over by gangs and basically run out of business and is now owned by the city and has a hub school, fire department, and police department in it.
Looks like a ghost town, I remember going there in the 80s and 90s when it was booming
Life comes at ya real fast :(
I grew up spending many nights and weekends in this mall. Back in the 90’s and into the mid 2000’s this was the premiere mall in the area. All the best stores, ice skating, and an awesome arcade called Diamond Jim’s. The arcade was where all the neon lights are by the food court.
Diamond Jim’s was in Montgomery mall, Aladdin’s Castle was here.
Diamond Jim’s was the spot!
i miss being a young kid and begging my parents to go here. i always thought it was so cool and fun, and now it’s just sad to look at. all the memories i had as a child faded away. regardless, thanks for taking the time to tour
Here here. I was one of those kids too. As someone in a wheelchair this was the perfect place for me to go out on my own and just have fun. Now I just sit at home. There's nowhere else I can really do that now. A part of me hopes it doesn't die completely... maybe it comes back to some sort of revival. But that seems to be a pipe dream.
This mall used to be great. It had ice skating and a Hello Kitty! I grew up in this mall and now it’s a total crap hole. Actually, the entire city of Montgomery is one big crap hole.
Oof, poor Montgomery! Haha. I enjoyed visiting the city, but it’s definitely a victim of urban sprawl and can be tough to find the nicer parts.
Nice tour. This mall gives some serious retro vibes and wonderland set is the icing on the cake.
Totally! Very vintage, and it's clear that there are some parts of it that haven't been updated much since the '70s.
My goodness so depressing. In the 90’s to early 00’s THIS used to be the place to be before Eastchase came in.But once again crime was one of the main reasons it’s depleting. That should make you understand what’s the problem
I remember there was more people in there 10 years ago. I remember the ice skating rink which is now a normal skating rink the last time I came. I remember having the now closed Chick Fil A 12 years ago. Montgomery Mall closed in 2008 hopefully Eastdale Mall won't be the next mall to close.
I’m forty and this mall was so much of my childhood, good times there.
I grew up in a town that was about an hour from Montgomery and I remember quite vividly when Eastdale Mall opened. I also remember the renovation that took place in the late '80's after Montgomery Mall got a facelift and a major expansion. I last visited Eastdale about 4 or 5 years ago (I have since moved away from the area to another state) and at that time I thought the mall was at about 70 percent occupancy so was not really surprised at the number of empty stores, but was shocked at the condition of the Food Court since that was a big part of the Mall's identity and appeal after the 1987 renovation. I was dismayed to see the ice rink had closed permanently.
3 things are killing this mall: 1. Heavy retail development in nearby Prattville (15 minutes north of downtown Montgomery) where JC Penney and Bass Pro Shops, among others, have large stores. 2. Changing demographics of the area around the mall. 3. A general eastward shift of new growth in Montgomery County (The Shops At Eastchase are very close to the town of Pike Road, a very affluent "bedroom community" just east of Montgomery and there is plenty of shopping out there around Eastchase besides just Eastchase, which is not a "mall" since it's not enclosed). Thanks for covering this dying mall.
I was a teen when Eastdale opened in the late 70s! Went there every weekend with my friends, because most of us had a crush on the guy that worked in the skating rink!
Love that for you! No sign of hunky ice rink men on my visit unfortunately 😅
First, Montgomery Mall, now Eastdale will be gone too. Sad.
This is the first video I have come across at Eastdale. For being the last indoor mall in a decently sized city, this is pretty bad. Hopefully the owners can get the mall back to full occupancy.
An Instagram follower let me know they got new management in 2020 (who don’t necessarily have the best reputation...) but I guess we can hold out hope that they fill up some vacant units and revamp things when they put the roller rink in!
I have always loved eastdale but Even with this new management we only have maybe 5 years before it’s gone. It’s very similar to how Montgomery malls history went. Once eastdale closes it’s on to east chase and it’ll eventually close too...my hometown is quite the place
Back in 1982
I worked at Swensen's .....An ice cream restaurant that served food ....I was 20 at the time....
Loved going there! Was so much fun to eat there.
I have had many birthdays at that ice ring and the Chuck E Cheese. You should check out the galleria next time you're in Alabama.
Thanks for coming to Montgomery! ❤ I wish I could hug the lady from the beginning ❤
Thanks! I enjoyed my trip there. And yeah, seems like she has moved on now, hopefully to good things!
I hate to see this as this was one of the malls of my childhood. I also hated to see Montgomery Mall go down and out. I loved both malls as a kid/teenager. I now live in Texas and there are malls doing great business.
I still visit the mall every so often - say once a quarter, was there about 2 months ago.. Ive lived in Montgomery for 30+ years. i generally don't go there in the evenings, so i cant comment about that time frame, but afternoons i have never had issues. The dillards? outlet store gets a lot of business - great way to by reg dillards clothes at thrift store prices. Yes, its declined a bit and the roller rink probably isnt getting anymore use than the ice rink- however the maintence cost for the roller rink is ALOT less..
I used to work in Montgomery Mall at the Electronics Boutique and Eastdale Mall at the Software Etc. back in the late 90s. Have a lot of fond memories of working with friends there. We even shot a friend's home movie at the Suncoast after the mall closed at night. Haven't been back to the mall in decades.
I live close to the mall I think it started dying when the ice skating rink malfunctioned and that guy died from the gasses
Whoa, I’ve never heard that story! Do you have a link or any more details about it?
@@DeadMallWalking I can't comment a link "MONTGOMERY -- Shoppers turning up at Montgomery's Eastdale Mall on Father's Day were turned away by police after a refrigerant leak and the death of a worker were reported.
Officers had blocked off every entrance of the mall, while the Montgomery Fire Department's HAZMAT team tried to find the source of an R-22 refrigerant leak near the mall's ice skating rink.
Lt. Mark Drinkard, a spokesman for the Montgomery Police Department, says the fire department received a call Sunday morning about the leak, and police received a call reporting a man was dead.
Drinkard says 22-year-old Nicholas Burdette of Millbrook apparently was performing janitorial services when he died.
Drinkard says Burdette's cause of death won't not be known until an autopsy is performed"
Really love your videos, they capture this particular feeling that I haven't gotten from any other creator in the dead mall community. As much as I love their content too, yours has this really specific flavor that I cannot get enough of. Out of curiosity have you been planning to visit any malls in Texas?
Thanks, that's really kind of you. You just made my day! And not in the immediate future unfortunately, although I would like to get there in the next year or two...
@@DeadMallWalking Happy to hear that! :) If you don't mind sharing, which malls are you thinking about visiting? Are you interested in hotels in the same way too? To clarify I don't mean basic plain hotels, more like themed or very unique ones.
I sure am! But I honestly tend not to stay in particularly unique or interesting hotels, although I was going to film a Margaritaville resort on a trip that got cancelled.
Upcoming videos include some content from Nashville, a closed mall in the UK, and a haunted mall in Kentucky...!
I remember that mall. I use to deliver beef produces from Iowa to the packing plant there. Walmart is near it. It was not safe!! Just like Bel-Aire Mall in Mobile. Over 10 homicides in the parking lot. And rent a cops walking at ind the mall with attack dogs. It's ghetto also. Especially the first of the month.
This is my hometown. This mall was my childhood and teenaged years. I had my 16th birthday here, took a girl to the movies where it was my first time holding a date's hand, met many incredible friends in the FYE where anime club meetups and events were held. Cosplay contests, trivia and prizes! It was amazing. Memories of going store to store on my own, as a young guy in a wheelchair not needing anyone to help me open doors and getting some safe exercise in the air conditioning away from the muggy southern heat of the summer and spring... My first taste of independence. It breaks my heart to see the mall die. Most all of my favorite stores are now gone. Gamestop, Halmark, dollar-tree, the movies, Sears, Sam-Goody, Aladdin's Castle Arcade, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Limited Too (yes, I enjoyed going there. For Neopets merch in the 00's!), the very FYE where I met those dear friends was closed and turned into a cheap Chuck-E-Cheeses. Hot Topic was only closed in the last year or two, right before this video was made, and it also retained it's old-school logo and sign entrance. You could see it on the corner near the ice palace entrance near Spencers... Chick-fil-a is gone as are many other awesome spots in the food court. Aeropostle was a good one too. Now all gone... Even though I never could use the ice rink, it saddens me to see it go as I loved watching people skate! And at Christmas, they put up a HUGE tree in the center, which was decked out in lights. The mall had so many Christmas decorations hanging in the ceilings around the concourses leading through the mall, lit by the skylights and twinkling Christmas lights. The food court also had some large Christmas character decor in the main court that were super festive, and the fountains always looked clean and worked beautifully. Now all I have are memories... I no longer have the freedom, the feeling of independence while roaming the mall. I wish I could recreate the mall in VR or in 3D somehow, just to keep those memories alive. I'd need a lot of footage to map it out... Maybe this video can help even if not every part was shown. Keep up the awesome documentation of these once great places!
I remember when I was a kid how lively the mall was. We even had field trips as as young kids to the build-a-bear (which is no longer there).
Going now is so depressing. Half the store are now the type that have 5 t-shirts and 4 pairs of pants costing $500 a piece 😒
“Creepy and empty” are good words to describe it.
The ice rink had been in decline for years and is now a regular skate ring. Much safer, they never keep the ice layer fully solid.
I'm from Millbrook, Alabama which is about 20 miles north of Montgomery The reason nobody goes there anymore is because crime is high as hell. If you want to get robbed go to eastdale Mall in eastchase is a much more secure location. It's on the good side of Montgomery
Interesting seeing the mall near me being viewed by a wider audience. But this mall just sucks. Hasn't been good in a LONG time
My Childhood! 🥺
i can’t believe they closed the ice skating rink :(
Maybe it’ll reopen? Last I heard it was going to be a roller rink, but I don’t know if that actually happened in the end!
This is the mall I grew up with let me tell you the reason why it went so bad is due to the new mall called east chase where most people go now a days. The roller rink was also a ice skating area I miss it
Yup, sure sounds like the Shoppes at Eastchase (or whatever fancy spelling they use!) lured a lot of retailers away from this mall 😢
The rainbow led lights in that fast chasing pattern are beyond annoying.
Like I said, strong opinions one way or the other 😉
The ice rink is still there! Not used but still 'there'.
That’s a lot of real estate to have vacant! They could really do with finding something to put there…
@@DeadMallWalking agreed.
I grew up here it was the white mall as a kid & the one on the south was the main mall but it got dangerous it was the biggest mall
It’s so interesting to me that some malls get a reputation as “the white mall” or “the black mall”, even in areas with a very mixed/diverse population! I wonder if that’s a uniquely American phenomenon or if it happens everywhere…
@DeadMallWalking It is mostly a Southern thing where the mentality in certain areas is "white this vs black this"
I was a military brat when I visited in the very late 80's while living at Fort McClellan Alabama.
At the time it was called showbiz pizza. I was 6 years old. I remember I did like them all quite a bit °~•.☆.•~°
I went there recently around 3pm during a weekday with my friend. It was MUCH busier than in this video.
But it was also very sketchy and a lot dirtier than in the video.
We walked around for 10 mins and left.
I didn’t get a good vibe being in there especially since me and my friend were the only 2 white people in the entire store that we saw, and people kept staring at us.
Lmao yo wtf. I live so close to this mall 😂 Crazy to actually something I recognize on such a small channel 💀
I have no doubt that the Google algorithm is showing you it because you live close by, haha. Hope you liked the vid.
Seeing this is depressing. This used to be the place to be in the early 2000’s.
Such a damn shame. Montgomery Mall and Eastdale were my two go-to hangouts as a teenager...there's a lot of "white flight" driving the steady and inexorable move eastward in Montgomery. The criminal elements of west Montgomery have broken loose and their old stomping grounds around Bell Street and Day Street have become so run down that now they're coming out to east Montgomery to find fresh targets and victims. Only Maxwell AFB is safe in west Montgomery, but you've got to fight your way through the hellish slums of Bell Street to get to it.
It's been 12 years since I was back in Montgomery for any serious length of time, although there was an overnight stay in 2018 as I was headed home to Colorado from my mother's place in Tampa FL. The idea of going back to my old hometown just leaves me saddened now, not excited at all.
Come on home brother. It ain’t too bad I mean yea the crime has started moving east the past 15-20 years but there’s still a lot of nice stuff here
loved teriyaki temple is really good or used to be used to eat there when i worked there in early 2000's
I live in nearby and this mall is a no go zone at night.
Look at all the abandoned malls in the United states. Why is it, that the day after Thanksgiving on black Friday, products go on sale at up to 50% the people come in and buy and the store finally turns a profit and goes into the black from the red. That indicates a serious problem, if stores can turn a profit selling at 50% off, what this indicates is that prices are far too high the entire rest of the year. These retail stores take out huge loans in order to operate, they do not own their building, they do not own the inventory, they operate on loans all year and then on black Friday they put items on sale up to 50% off and then turn a profit which they then use to pay off their loans. Then they must borrow more money to buy their spring merchandise. These stores must become profitable by March selling at lower prices all year round.
Retail is going to change. A truck can deliver 5,000 pairs of jeans to a retail store. Ordering jeans online requires 5,000 boxes and 5,000 deliveries. One person can take one trip to the mall, and walk around and buy 10 things in one trip. Ordering 10 things online requires 10 boxes and 10 separate deliveries. We are wasting cardboard and fuel Ordering so much online. We are cutting down the Amazon Forrest to make cardboard boxes in order to buy things from Amazon. We are wasting millions and millions of trees which could be lumber for homes. We are going to restore the city malls and get retail prices down and restore these communities. We are spending so much money on interest and insurance and fuel on top of hyperinflated housing and retail prices we cannot afford to buy anything. Look at the devastating result. Loss of manufacturing jobs and retailers. Things are going to change we are going to cut prices in half and double the value of money. Then we are going to remove mortgage interest. We are going to reset real estate values, and bring commodity prices way down. We are going to decrease cost and increase wages and the standard of living around the world, and significantly increase manufacturing jobs in the United states and around the world. LLXIIX77
Closing the ice rink will kill it. I hate that. The guy who runs Charleys is a good guy and it will be a shame if he has to close. I used to go there for lunch, then blow a bunch of money on tools at Sears. Those were good days.
I live in Montgomery.. Don’t go there unless you absolutely have to
i live here i drive by it everyday to head to school. many ppl have died at that mall and nobody shops there bc it’s just a bad spot you’ll get your car fucked with or worse. it use to be a great mall
It's a little off the beaten path, which probably doesn't help with that. All I'll say is that I parked close, got in and out, and didn't have any problens with my car or anything. Maybe I was lucky!
You should have visited the mall on a Friday or Saturday when it's a lot busier to get a more accurate picture. You were so early the occasional senior citizen, from the nearby retirement apartments, could be seen out for their morning constitutional. Everyone knew the Stores at Eastchase would eventually suck the life out of the malls in town and Eastern Bypass businesses.
Oh, for sure! I try to visit early so I don't get a ton of people (except the occasional mall walker) I have to edit out for privacy reasons. I'll bet it's more lively at the weekends.
Is BELK STILL OPEN ?
As far as I know, but I would recommend calling ahead before you go - this video was filmed quite a while ago now!
Been there so long ago
Just don’t go on Saturday or Friday night or evening & you’ll be ok , that’s usually when my fellow Montgomery people like to lose they manners
Haha, thanks for the tip, friend!
I live right behind this mall, and I can tell you that criminal activities have run off 99% of the customers. Soon, we too are moving away from this democrat run city.
99% please shut t f and learn numbers before you just pull one outtta your a*s
Ice skaters in the center.
Absolutely no one told that white man to leave unless he was harassing black people. People here mind their own business and affairs.
Suspect you may be right there. I went in here a little cautious but I met some friendly folks and never felt threatened.
@@DeadMallWalking Thanks for that! Definitely nostalgia walking through. Extremely affordable now for small businesses vendors. If it ever closes, I hope they build schools and police/fire precincts as they did to Montgomery. The facility looks great now.
I suspect that he was being warned about ill behaved teenagers or even very young adults. I've witnessed a few instances of what could have been anti-white racism in Montgomery, and it was always a relatively young person in a group of peers. Though I want to stress that such a thing is very rare in my experience, three times in 20+ years. Heck, I even had a guy be clearly astonished that I was in his neighborhood and so concerned for my safety that he gave me careful instructions on how to leave the neighborhood via the back way, so as to avoid having to drive past a large crowd of teenagers which I had seen on the way in.
@@whorhaydelfuego7190 Again, I have never known or seen someone that was just minding their own business, enjoying the mall bothered or accosted in any way. I worked at Montgomery mall at a kiosk for a few years. I was close to security as well. The few incidents were generally domestic in nature and amongst peers. Sorry if that rare thing happened to you however. Any “racism” sucks.
I Love the Fountains!!!! F+L, Corey
Yup, like I said I’m surprised that they’re all still on! Such a distinctive chlorine smell...
First
That you are!
any time a person says no one wants to work I know for a fact they pay dirt and expect absolute loyalty
Normally, I would agree with you BUT I got the impression that this lady wasn't hiring staff. So I think maybe she's talking about general attitudes towards work/life balance, entrepreneurship etc. Not saying I agree or disagree with her on any of it, just an observation 🙂
@@DeadMallWalking failure of a world staff is failure of management. training, promotional opportunities, growth, anywhere I've worked where they say no one wants to work is lying and doesn't want to do what it takes to manage a workforce effectively
Actually Montgomery mall was the best mall In Montgomery, they closed Montgomery Mall in like 2008 due to high crime etc that was going on in the Mall … Eastdale mall became the mall that everyone started to go to, but trouble started to follow there as well, that’s when some stores started to leave out of the mall, also there was a “KAY” jewelers there and other good brand stores, which closed due to bankruptcy and other issues, in 2020 they got new management over the mall, and as of now they’re seeking new businesses to put there stores in the mall .. and then we have an outside shopping mall called “Eastchase”, with nearby restaurants as appose to a “Foodcourt” in a actual mall … living in a “Red state” “Alabama”with people who lived here for decades, that don’t want anything to change around the city, it’s basically a “what u see is what u get” type of thing here In Montgomery.. my apologies you had to see a run down 70s mall in “Alabama” 🫤
I remember going to this mall as a teenager just to hit up the movies and arcade room
Im from and live in Montomery Im 34 and remember the good years not it nothing but homeless people drug dealing and shootings its sad to see.
Always bad to see areas decline. If you're from the area, you should check out my video on local legend Sammy Stephens if you haven't already done so!
@@DeadMallWalking "It's just like, it's just like a mini-mall."
