IMO, one of the top movies ever made. It's fun, it's clever, and it has real life meaning. That's hard to equal.

The forecasting started in Germany and other European countries by farmers to determine harvesting and planting times. Immigrants arrived to America and continued the tradition. It turned into a event and is broadcast live from Punxsutawney, PA. It was covered at 6 o'clock this morning on the news.

I remember when this movie came out. It was such a big hit. Now it's used to describe other movies. Like Edge of Tomorrow, etc.

No idea why he was going through that loop. I believe there is a rough number how many years he was stuck in it. I think there is a deleted scene that mentions it.
It would seem his learning to be a better person was what broke the loop, because the moment he won Rita over completely, the loop was over.

They removed some scenes and in return changed the plot where he would have had a voodoo curse placed on him where he had to be completely selfless on that day to break the curse. He had to be good just to do it, not to get something out of it. They kept that part in but removed the curse part. Basically the curse makes you a better person or it traps you in the loop forever.

You should check out Quickchange, With Bill Murray, Geena Davis, and Randy Quaid. Similar comedic feel though it's more about NYC. Not too many people have seen it.

Groundhog Day is a classic. Which I believe was voted among the top ten spiritual films by a panel of theologians. When I first saw it, it took me two viewings to get the message. It’s a tale of the personal growth of a jerky and lonely man. Who only gets released from his cycle of repeating Groundhog Day when he finally learns the lesson of what we are supposed to do while we are on the earth. Which is to care about one another. When Phil finally stops living selfishly for himself, and starts living to serve his fellow human beings, he is finally released from the cycle echoing the Hindu principle of reincarnation. So, while the film (smartly, I think) never addresses WHO places him in the cycle, it makes clear WHY he was placed in it.
The saddest part of the film for me is the stage after Phil stops trying to commit suicide. You can feel that he genuinely loves Rita, but doesn’t know how to earn her love in return. It’s only after he lets go of trying to get what he wants, Rita, and commits to helping those around him get what they want and need that Phil what he wants and needs. Rita’s love. In addition, while I’m not sure that I would say Phil comes to love himself, you can tell that he definitely at least comes to like himself. Which is a huge deal, as a point earlier in the film, Phil confesses to Rita that he doesn’t like himself.

Phil is in purgatory (first day “what the Hell?), Ned the salesman is the devil [“heckfire”; orange feather (horn) in his hat, “watch your step” (falling into Hell) “It’s a doozy,” etc.] trying to get him to sell his soul via signing a “life insurance” contract, the bartender is God watching with a smirk, and Rita is an angel.
