  • This video was shot on the 7th day after these northern cardinals hatched. You can see both adults are busy, collecting and keeping those little chicks fed. Note how quickly their limited strength and energy rises and falls, to accept the food and then rest. Another interesting activity is how they handle the fecal sacs. It may seem gross for the adults to pluck and swallow the sacs, but the fact is, the food the chick eat, goes through their short digestive tract so quickly, it comes out the other end with almost as much nutritional value, as it did going in. Rather than waste that food, the adults benefit. This also keeps the nest clean and avoids waste on the ground, under the nest, that may attract predators.
