Dr. Fung, you will never know how much you have done for me. You have saved my life of that I am sure. I'm intermittent fasting every day but one when I do a 24 hour fast. I've lost 28 lbs and I'm off of metformin. Thank you so much for healing me and giving us this information for free. I am so grateful 🙏🏽💯🙏🏽

@J_H72 no worries, happy to share. My A1C went from 6.9 to 5.3, and my glucometer readings showed that I was running low even after eating
(I follow a low-carb lifestyle,). My provider told me to stop the metformin, take my readings at least 3 times a day for now, and continue with all of my lifestyle modifications. Also worth mentioning that before I started fasting and low-carb eating, I asked her to review my plans and let me know if I could go for it. She gave me a big thumbs up, and in my last visit, she told me I was glowing.

I'm the poster child for how the 70's North American food pyramid went wrong. Born in '69, I was active as a child and very sporty as a teenager. I was lean. I had a terrible injury at 19 which stopped my physical activity completely. I gained a lot of weight, in fact I almost doubled my weight in one year! Since then I've struggled with my weight. I ate low cal, low fat for YEARS. I'm 178cm (5'10") and I gained weight on a 1200 cal low fat, high complex carb diet. Every doctor I saw told me to eat less! Every doctor I saw secretly thought I must be sneaking in a couple chocolate bars every day. I wasn't. I felt like a failure. I was literally starving and yet I was getting fatter...
Thankfully I now understand how my body works. Thanks to Dr Fung, my (new) GP and other sources, I'm slowly but surely going down. I eat low carb OMAD, and I'm about to start a regular weekly 48h fast. Weight is coming down, even in my menopausal state, and I'm feeling better than I've felt in years. Finally. I have my life back.

Sounds like me. Down to 800 calories a day and running 5 miles. Weight was still creeping up. My GP even sent me for a scan to see if there was a tumour growing in my abdomen. I changed to this way of eating in October 2022 ( carnivore mainly) and within weeks I had dropped 5kilos and my 45 year hypertension was correcting. I’ll stick with it now.

Fasting can be great for weight loss but I keep coming back to it due to the amazing health benefits! Some benefits of occasional extended fasting and lowering carbs in the diet: High blood pressure is lowered to normal levels very quickly while fasting. Fibrosis/scarring is reversed over time, including in the heart and lungs.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased as fasting improves metabolic health, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy. When insulin is high, vit D stays locked in the blood cells.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion plaques, growths and pathogens by the immune system. This will also remove spikes quicker, whether natural or unnatural in origin!
Your body recycles up to 1/3 of all immune bodies in a 72h fast, rejuvenating your entire immune system. This helps prevent the onset of new autoimmune conditions, which develop through a leaky gut and damaged immune system.
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered when fasting, reducing inflammation and allowing the immune bodies to move freely through the body.
Fasts from 36-96 h increase metabolic rate due to norepinephrine release!
Blood clotting is lessened and clots and plaques are removed over time.
Fasting restores your circadian rhythm to normal over time.
T cells and T reg cells are vital in fighting cancer, autoimmune disease and infections but as we age the thymus stops making as many of them. Fasting releases stem cells, which then can become new T cells. It also releases growth hormone, which regenerates the thymus itself!
Fasting restores NAD+ and increases nitric oxide release to open blood vessels.
Fasting increases anti-aging Yamanaka factors and increases average telomere length in stem cell pools.
Fasting can help with MS, Depression, BPD, Autism and seizures.
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell required for viruses to replicate.
The hunger hormone ghrelin also lowers with extended fasting and rises from dieting.
What breaks a fast? Anything with protein or carbohydrates in it will break a fast but most teas and herbs are OK. Supplements and meds often break ketosis directly or contain a filler that will. Many meds are dangerous to take while fasting.
Does fasting lower testosterone? No, it raises it when the fast is broken by increasing lutenizing hormone. Fasting also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps with muscle building.
Fasting activates autophagy (literally self eating). This will cause cells to recycle damaged proteins and foreign matter such as viruses.
Lowering insulin via fasting virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body.
Weight loss from daily caloric restriction has 1/4 to 1/3 of the weight lost as lean tissue while many studies show fat loss from 36 h fasts without losing any lean tissue!
The obese will lose loose skin while fasting, but the frail will have increased growth hormone release, which helps to make more lean tissue and reduce frailness.
Fasts of 36-96 will not affect short term female fertility or affect menstrual cycle. They also may increase long term fertility for some women.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitochondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism, fighting infection and cancer prevention!
Fasting reduces pain and anxiety by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, just like the effect of CBD oil
Stomach acid is reduced over time while fasting and can allow for the healing of treatment resistant ulcers. Some patients may need continued acid reduction medication while fasting. When the fast is completed, your stomach acid levels will be normalized.
Your brain also prefers to burn ketones at a rate of around 2.5 to 1 when they are available in equal quantity to glucose. Except for brief periods of very intense exercise, your body mainly burns fats in the form of free fatty acids.
Fasting releases BDNF and NGF in the blood. This stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, which can help a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
When not in ketosis, the brain can only burn carbohydrate, which produces a great deal of damaging ROS the brain has to deal with.
Fasting increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells, destroying them. Senescent cells are responsible for many of the effects of aging and are a root cause of the development of cancer.
A fasting mimicking diet for 3-5 days in a row provides many of the same benefits as water fasting. FMD usually has 200-800 calories, under 18 g of protein and extremely low carbs.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. They also help with dementia and many other issues even if you take them while not fasting!
Glycine and trimethylglycine can also be useful supplements while fasting that won't break ketosis and have many benefits.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness or tremors, then simply break the fast and seek advice.

Pottenger, I know you've put a lot of work into your list of resources. I have a suggestion, perhaps when you comment, at least for your initial comment, offer a smaller amount of information for the novices. Those newer to this may not be able to absorb all of it and many will see a longer message and simply not read it. Then they'll miss out on potentially life-changing information.
If you write a comment that is brief with one or two important points you'll get more responses and then you can post the entirety of the message. I'm thinking in terms of getting more people to read and learn.
I'm not suggesting you only post short comments but more in the nature of bait, someone will read one or two important points, they'll respond and then you can give them more.
Edit - I mean this respectfully, I recognize that you have put a lot of work into your posts and resources. I want that work to bear fruit.

@LTPottenger When you are talking about supplements you have to differentiate between somebody taking an iron tablet or multi vitamin or something like that. Those are supplements.
You're talking about flavored protein powders and collagen drinks.
Those are very very different than what is most often referred to as a supplement.
My dehydrated liver capsules and vit k2 caplets are not going to kick anyone out of ketosis.
And eating protein absolutely doesn't kick you out of ketosis. Eating fat and protein keep you in ketosis. I'm not sure what you mean.

I understand that the deductions here seem reasonable. As a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, most everyone was thin and didn't have to be concerned about their calorie intake. I ate like a horse, and was always underweight. Same for my parents and siblings. But what confuses me is the supposed role of culprit that refined carbs and sugars play in our current diet. It wasn't - as Dr. Fung asserts - that we weren't snacking or eating sugar back then. My experience was the opposite. I snacked every day after school. My mom had a sweet tooth and we always got a candy bar after she got off work, AND she always made some type of dessert after dinner. My friend survived on red licorice and Dr. Pepper. No one from that generation thought twice about their sugar or refined carb intake, myself included. Eventually that mindset caught up with me and the weight came on hard and fast - but never for my parents or much older siblings. I can't help but think that the chemical treatments and genetic manipulation and hybridization of our food supply has played a major role in the factor of weight gain in our society. It was never an issue, no matter the food, before the chemical companies started messing with things. We don't have many naturally occurring food choices left any more, and I don't think our bodies can properly process the altered stuff we're left with.

    • @pat4005
      @pat4005 Месяц назад +11

The big difference between then and now (other than the genetically manipulated food and lots of added chemicals 😂), is PLANT AND SEED OILS!
Back then, my Mom, Grandmas, etc., all used animal fats to cook in!
They used butter and clarified butter, bacon fat, duck fat, lard, etc.
Ever since the addition, and outright push to use these unhealthy plant and seed oils in the form of hydrogenated things like Crisco and margarine, and then the gross oils that were pushed on all the commercials and women's magazine ads, and we were told how "heart healthy" they were while the natural animal fats were villainized, put our health in a rapid, downward spiral to Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Back then, kids (and I think to some extent adults also), were outside in the fresh air and sunshine LOTS MORE!
We had a higher chance of getting the vitamin D through the creation of it in our bodies by our skin being exposed to the sun.
Natural sunlight plays a huge role and as more is discovered about it's critical role in our mental, emotional and physical health, researchers will be shocked at how we survived at all by staying inside all the time, and not being exposed to that fresh air and sunshine on a daily basis!
And also having our eyes continuously bathed in the unnatural indoor light, TV and computer screen lights, and cell phone light.
These things are the biggest differences along with the sad abomination of manipulated and genetically engineered food and bombardment of pesticides and chemicals!

Dropping carbs did not work until I started spiking my coffee with butter, first at least 50 grams of butter in a 250 grams cup of coffee, now I can do it with 20 grams or less. Since I started adding butter to my coffee I dropped from 95kg to 82kg. I am still alive, better diabetes, have lost 20 kg, and not come back to initial weight in three years so far. I have my blood results retaken twice after secretly hiding that diet fact from my GP - my personal doctor could not believe the cholesterol, sugar and other results so made me to be retested. But the diabetic nurse knew it right away, she said - are you on a low carb diet?... My kids don't get any sweets or soda from me, they eat whatever they are pleased 3-4 times a day and thats it. They are healthy and fit. Surely they have sweets from friends but thats another thing, as a parent I need to give a good example. Recently 2 friends of mine were directed to Fungs books and one of them lost 36kgs, and he said the obesity code is the first book he read overnight in years. He said Jason Fung saved his life, and I know he did. The other friend is very happy to. My wife joined me at some point, and she was thrilled to wear the dresses she thought she won't fit again. I didnt say eat carbs and swallow them whole and over consume.
Im saying you do "need" carbs as much as you "need" protein.

Thank you for your free advice and knowledge!!! ❤❤❤ I'm a 55 year old male, and I do fasting once a week for at least 36 to 60 hours with nothing but water to drink.
Plus, exercise. I am able to drop anywhere from 3 to 9 pounds a week doing this.

This is awesome, I've been doing intermitin fasting since January and have lost 30 lbs. An added benefit is that my A1C has gone from 10 to 5.9. I eat healthy meals which include 1-2 complex carbohydrates. This was easier than I thought , I don't feel deprived and have more energy. Thank you for your passion and dedication .

All you are saying is true and I loss weight following you. My question is what about the dopamine effect of sugar and addiction; how does that come into play? Thanks for all you do for us.

Yes, sugar cravings are mych better, but for me, being low carb has caused me to be in a bad mood more. I see commercials for things I no longer eat, and I just WANT to eat them. Maybe all the carbs were masking a problem.

I've found Dr Fung's videos very useful but still find it incredible that it's taken us so long to learn that losing weight = eat less.

It's because the system at large wants the most consumption possible, so when you ask for a solution to the issue of consuming too much, the answer is to try consuming more different things. They sell you junk food and then turn around and relabel it as protein bars and shakes and pre-workout sugar blaster NONSENSE. Products come in manufactured containers, food doesn't

You can only gain weight when insulin/sugar is spiked. Insulin is our fast storage hormone. But yes you do need to eat less to do this and less times per day.

I’ve been put on insulin long-acting and short-acting and I’m trying to do Carnivore, however, I end up with a low blood sugar drop to 3.2 - 3.4. What can I do, help? I have gained over 26lbs in less than 4 months! I live in Kingston, ON and just love watching your videos.
