- Does your car's interior stink? There's a good chance that stench is coming from the carpets. If you want to get the smell out for good, you might need to replace the carpets.
In this behind-the-scenes installment of Ain't Fuelin', we install a fresh new carpet in our 1999 Honda Civic HX Coupe project car (a.k.a.: Slambo).
Check out the full Ain't Fuelin' playlist and get the lowdown on Slambo: • Under the Hood: Episod...
i took ziplock bags and labeled them " front seats", "rear seats" , "carpet clips", etc etc - this way you dont lose any hardware and you know where it all goes. Nice video and I am glad I watched because I was going to throw out the old carpet but now I know I may need it as a template for holes.
Ziplock bags = great idea, Pepe! It's way too easy to misplace a screw or two.
+pepe salgado That's sort of what I did when I had to remove the center console this weekend. I put all of the screws in a ziplock bag. I didn't loose a single one of them. ;)
You really don't need to do that its only 3 sets of screws just place them in the cup holder
These projects are definitely rare to see on here!
excited to freshen up the interior of my 06 accord, a new carpet and some fitted seat covers ought to really do the job well. thanks for posting this!
Thanks for posting, I'm doing the same job on my 95 civic. This was extremely helpful.
Good luck with it!
ldawson103 how did that go? ik watching this same video for exactly that
ldawson103 how long did it take to replace? I just bought 95 civic
Very helpful. Just got my dad’s old car, a little cleaning would be nice
nice job i have a 94 civic with 450,000 kms on it my floor boards on drivers side are rotted out. I worked in the honda factory in the 90's and putting these carpets in lineside was one of the toughest jobs on the line.
dave houston Congrats on 450K, bummer about the rust. Rust Never Sleeps ... We've abandoned a couple of projects due to rusted frames over the years. It was a huge relief to see Slambo's floorboards in pristine condition when we ripped up the carpet. Was your Honda plant in North America? NJ had three auto plants - one GM and two Ford - but they're long gone.
yes its just becoming too expensive to build cars in north America especially small cars. Most NA plants make the big hulking $30000 + SUvs and trucks because that's the only ones they can make money on
Very simple project to do
You guys just make it look so simple!!!
THAT LOOKS AMAZING!!
I just saved $ 199.99 by power wash my carpet and floor mats . Nice video thou ! 👍
How did u do that and not leave alot of the water.
I died when he threw the oem mats away.
Found this video relaxing and informative. thanks!
+Curiosity Relaxing? Awesome! Thanks for the feedback!
Just the video I was looking for. Many thanks
Greatdaness Cool! Glad we could help!
on my 450,000 km civic I still have the original clutch and alternator I only replaced the starter motor and one cylinder head gasket
Nice! These little engines run and run with just a bit of maintenance. I need to replace the thermostat (stuck open) ASAP. Not sure if the timing belt's been done.
I'm a little late to the party, but I was wondering... how big of a noise difference did you notice with the mass backing vs the stock carpet? ... a lot less road noise, or maybe other noises are more noticeable now? Better conversation levels? Less radio volume needed? Less rattling?
p.s. great video!!
Fezlikesguns It’s quieter, but tough to say exactly how much quieter. My transmission is old and noisy! 😂 It would be interesting to test this process with another car, using a dB meter to measure levels on different road surfaces and speeds. Maybe one of these days when I have the time and money to spend. (It’s good to dream!) Thanks for the kinda words!
Where did you get the new carpet??
At first you guys look like dea agents searching the car! Lol😎
Thanks for this video. Makes it seem pretty possible to do the same thing on my 96 Accord coupe when the time comes, but I don't think I'll want to pull the carpet just to clean it which is what I was wondering about today - doing the first interior clean on my project car and after I pulled the seats and saw how nasty it was I wondered if it might be worth it! What is that wire from the driver seat for? I'm concerned I may have slightly damaged the tab on the connector when I did the driver seat second and didn't think to check if it had a wire after the passenger seat didn't, I just picked up the seat and yanked (oops).
dirtywhitellama Seat belt sensor wire? Glad that the video helped!
I was at the civic/crv plant in alliston Ontario Canada. its the sister plant to the Marysville Ohio plant. Line jobs there are tough jobs non union plant. You must live in an area that gets little snow hence your rust free floor boards. Did you use grommets to put your new carpets in?
I bought the car from the second owner, but he only owned it for a short while. We get snow here in Jersey, but it looks like the car was garaged, fairly well maintained (other than the smelly/smoked interior), and possibly not driven much in winter. The only grommets I recall seeing were under the back seat. I haven't reinstalled the seat bottom (yet) ... it's kinda nasty ... I will do the grommets after I run the wire for the ($30!) rear view camera.
Great video. I have 09 crv, smelly, whew!
Thanks for this! I have an 02 civic ex with really nasty carpets. I don't know what the previous owner did to them, but it looks like they dumped coffee on the floor and never bothered to clean it up. I have had the carpets professionally detailed and when they were done there was no difference in the color. Although, the car did smell nicer! I am wondering if it would be worth my while to try to replace the carpet myself. This video doesn't make it look too difficult!
This was my first try. It took a bit of time and effort, but I'm glad I did it.
+MPGomatic About how long did it take you to complete the project from start to finish?
+SoraShadowdancer It was done in a day. Can't remember exactly how many hours.
1:35 Did you really not save any weight when you replaced w/ the sparco seat and base? I had wanted to reduce the weight that way.
The Sparco bases are hefty. I might pull a seat once the snow melts. That would allow me to put a Sparco combo and the OEM seat on a scale to weigh them. I can’t imagine that the difference is anywhere near what I’ve lost on the Keto diet. :)
Been wondering this, why does no one install a bench seat for the front in a Civic? Looks like there's not much there to truly interfere with it
Nice vid! I noticed that you put the seats in before the center console at the end. In the beginning, you removed the seats then the center console.
Thanks for the kind words, aquateen77723! I still haven't reinstalled the console. I left it out (initially) in order to install a short-throw shifter (later that month) and the Sparco R100 seats (shortly after that). A custom center console is on the wish list.
MPGomatic I knew there was a reason. I have a 1995 Honda Accord coupe and the center console is loose where it bolts near the shifter. I think the plastic tab broke off or something. I was thinking of getting the short shifter kit also. Good luck with Slambo's build!
aquateen77723 Thanks! Could be a tab or clip? The B&M short-throw and Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings made a huge difference. It went from sloppy to super-tight. $10 for the bushings was the best $10 I've spent on the car. =)
What would be the proper way to remove the carpet near the center console without ripping it?
that's great! hah, would've been a funny little tidbit to have a money counter at the corner as you found more change :P
That would be a hoot, mechanicalfluff! Knock wood we find the backing to go whole hog on this series. We could include include that ticker on every build. Money Found vs Money Spend. muwhahaha
i have a 99 civic coupe that's white too! looked this up because i uh.... I'm uh... replacing the carpet with astro turf
Astroturf! Nice! It’s like a miniature golf course on wheels. 🤪
@@mpgomatic haha yeah! I'll have to put a tee somewhere lol. I'm replacing the headliner too, with a green, yellow and black Mexican blanket. It's gonna be quiiiite unique haha
Question, could you remove the carpet and just not have any? I can't honestly see the point in the carpet except to maybe keep the car warmer
Justin Gold Race cars don't have carpet. :) It will be significantly louder without carpet, hotter in the summer, colder in the winter.
great video, thanks for this
Glad we could help!
Thanks for this video I have the same exact car manual transmisson and color 👍🏻
Don't have to take off the negative side of battery?
A bit off topic. But I have an 08 accord that has a rattle on cold start… anyone know what it could be? Or how to fix it
I think that carpet was salvageable
Dalton334 No way! 😂 It was hideous.
how much time start to finish for this project?
We got it done in a day.
@@mpgomatic define "a day." :)
Kathleen B. Shannon Under eight hours. It all depends on the interior’s complexity. The Civic was relatively easy to gut and reassemble.
Great tip but... I need to put that stank thing on top the new one ??
Oh no
I know a shop that cleans the carpets. And restores the whole interior to make it look clean. Would that be better than doing this? It costs about 200.
Jose Capo A good cleaning is always the first resort! Better depends on how bad the carpets are … in this case, they were nasty …
Put some modern style seats in there... And maybe an updated steering wheel and that thing would be freaking sweet! (And maybe a backup cam) it's awesome to see you modernize and update an older car and what a perfect example, a late 90s civic, the best subject of all! (Obviously it's not my money or effort so it's easy to sit here and say that) haha but I'm starting to think I would rather PAY for my older car to be updated with new tech and nice seats and carpet etc, than spend 3x that for a newer car!
We're working' on it, Eighty cc! Did you see the Sparco R100 seat replacement and JVC head unit episodes? This link will take you to the playlist, starting with the Sparco segment: ruclips.net/video/a6Xd4ukPNcA/видео.html The JVC unit will accept a backup cam ... I picked one up for $30. Waiting for the weather to warm up before we install it. An aftermarket steering wheel would be cool, but I don't want to give up the airbag. There's a cheap cover on it now. I'm thinking about a stitched leather cover. This build is all about the cheap. :)
Replacement carpet isn't that expensive and there are a ton of different color choices, but installation is time intensive. Seats can be REALLY expensive. We used the least expensive street Sparcos. Salvaged seats from a newer car can be a great way to go, but you need to be able to fabricate the mounts.
I did! loved it! MPGomatic
MPGomatic looking good! I'm waiting to hear back on an HX, sadly it has no A/C which I wanted, but otherwise looks clean, and NO SMELLS! haha, but nice to see how simple the car's interior is to replace. thanks for the videos!
Thanks Andrew Sible! A/C is nice to have on crazy hot summer days, but it knocks down the MPGs on the HX, big time. I used it sparingly last summer. Knock wood your HX works out! =)
MPGomatic thanks! Makes sense but I've heard every which way about that so I'm going to test myself. I'll run a trip without it, then install and run it on the same journey... Get some hard results! Have you used a mpguino or something like that to test?
1:48 "papi peed on the couch"
What is the carpet material used to replace original?
how did the car get an aftermarket radio halfway through lol
Magic! 😂
I have a 2000 civic & the carpets are getting worse with every rain. I’ve been trying to keep it covered but the damage is done. Now there’s mold. Repacking the carpet still leaves me with the original problem. Where’s the water coming from? The sunroof doesn’t seem to be the issue neither are the windows or doors. Any help would be appreciated.
Could it be leaking from the back window, trunk, or windshield?
MPGomatic
Thanks for the response. No not leaking from windows, not as far as I can tell. The floorboard, & the trunk interior floorboard are the only things that are wet after a rain. And when I say wet I mean soaked. Its not my daily driver & it stays parked half the year so by the time I noticed the problem it was already growing mold spots. I hate to replace the carpet only to ruin the new carpet.
Victory Base Sounds like it may be the trunk weatherstripping.
MPGomatic
Thanks I’ll give it another look! Have a good one!
What do you think the best way to go about doing the install if you dont have the stock carpet to use to mark holes?
Hunter McDaniel It’s tricky. I’ve only done this once. You could get a roll of kraft paper and make some sort of template with that, but you need to check everything carefully before cutting.
How much do they cost
hey quick question, what liquid did you use to bind the carpet with the car for the final fitting?
fleekay No liquid. No glue. Just carpet.
Whats the website you went to. Id like to look into it.
I ordered from accmats.com … good luck! :)
Give me the price on the carpet for a 92 Honda Civic hatchback station wagon
For DUMB. They're not selling carpet. How would they know the prices. DUMB DUMB AND DUMB.
4:06 hahahahha
"Bragggh brahhhhg rhhhhhhh"
I found food instead of money 😞😂😂😂😂
I’m new car the carpet is not connect
