Sparco R100 After Market Seat Install / Review - Ain't Fuelin' Honda Civic Build

- This video covers the installation a set of Sparco R100 bucket seats ( amzn.to/2auzrzU ) in our 1999 Honda Civic project car (a.k.a.: Slambo). Install details (with pricing and parts info): www.mpgomatic.com/sparco-r100-... The R100s are the most affordable seat in Sparco's street line up. They're pretty basic, but have good lines.
We thought about using late model Honda or Acura seats from the salvage yard, but decided to go with a fresh set of R100s, instead.
Changing the seats is one of the most dramatic changes you can make to the interior your car. The '99 Civic was an easy swap, because the OEM seats do not have integrated air bags.
The install portion of the video was shot in July 2014. The second part was shot on New Year's Day, 2015

When i got my sparco r100 seats the handles were broke to. I was mad so i called up sparco and told them and they sent out all new plastics for the whole seat even tho i only needed the handles all for FREE.
Awesome review, the 5 month fast forward for progress was really helpful
I wish my back agreed with these types of seats. Even moderately bolstered seats, like what you find in a Ford Focus SE (not the base model seats, but the same ones as the non Recaro ST) hunch my shoulders forward and it also messes with my lower back. I miss running around in small, manual transmission, fwd cars. I'll have to live vicariously through others. I like the direction of your build. Keep the updates coming. Thanks and happy new year!
Thanks for the kind words, Aaron Fink! Seats can be like shoes. Some look great but are painful to wear. One size doesn't fit all! I'm convinced there's a business model in custom seats for folks with back issues ...
Go figure I used to have recaros in my old 98 TDI, I got them out of my dad's old jeep and just drilled holes to fit them in the Jetta, and of course a week after doing so my buddy and I take a 12 hour drive to charleston SC and they were HORRIBLE on long drives!!! Hahahaha but those handles are so cool! This is exactly how you read about big stuff coming from accidents or necessity! Lol love the pattern and the interior is looking cleaner everyday, might want to consider making more of those handles for people to order... My 00 jettes got 278k now and the springs are about to pop through... But since I bought it it's never started or ran quite right but enough to live with, except in winter when it acted like the glow plugs didn't work, despite ordering a $30 cleaner for the harness and an electric tester and replacing the plugs still no results, car wouldn't start in cold without cranking like 30 times... Come to find out last week it's been out of time since I bought it!!! By like 2 degrees, even after doing the belt and putting it back how I found it and a TDI guy telling me my timing was perfect, my buddy looked at it last week and found it was lean, so seats aren't a huge worry anymore for now I also replaced the sunroof in 3 hours before work one day (that includes getting the junkyard one and drive time) after having to kick out the original when it locked itself running with the dog in it on a hot day and I didn't have my phone... Anyway good to see slambo is well!!!
Great stuff, Eighty cc! Recaro's are my favorite seats. A nice (new) set of them would cost *double* what I paid for Slambo. It all comes down to what fits your butt and your budget. :) The deeper I get into this project, the more ideas I get for products that don't exist (but should). 3D printing is a big part of that ...
Is your TDI running better now that the timing's straightened out? I want to do a TDI project, at some point down the road. I have a clean '01 Golf collecting dust in the driveway, but it's a gasser (2.slow automatic).
Thank you for all the work you put in for these videos! :-)
Many thanks for the kind words, Kevin Rogel! It's been a hoot to shoot. Fingers crossed we get to keep rolling. The dream is to turn it into a real deal series ...
wow so awesome got to have one in my G20 !
Very enjoyable video and very informative
This video is THE ONLY review I can find online that shows you the bottom of the seat; how it fixes and how an average-sized guy fills it. Super stuff thanks! I'm 6 feet tall with a 32 inch waist, and a shorter than average body (long legs!) and broad shoulders. I'm slim but kind of lanky, so ergonomics are always tricky with me - anything from clothes to furniture to motorbikes! In these COVID lockdown times I cannot walk into a shop and try a seat for size so it's the online ordering lottery for me :-( I just bought a single R100 "Sky" version for a home gaming/sim car racing cockpit. For £234 I think it should be a bit nicer than the plasticky seats you tend to see bundled with most rigs, or at least the ones around the £450 area. I hope the angle adjustment handle isn't so bad it breaks quickly. I was looking at the Sparco GT (it looks lovely and has lumbar adjustment!) but it was going to be about twice the price or even more.
Question: Did the R100 come with any bolts or do you have to source them separately? If the latter, what length and width and pitch do I need? It's amazing that Sparco don't detail this on their website and neither do websites of retailers. Also I see that Sparco sell two different versions of the slider runner things, one seems to be half the price but comes with bolts (not seat bolts but allen-headed frame bolts) which seems like a super deal... and the more expensive version doesn't. It's so weird and people like me get anxious about missing parts and undocumented specifications. Are these things standard across motoring or are they brand specific??
If I recall correctly, there was a separate kit with bolts. It’s been a while!
I’ve been thinking about pulling the seats out of the Civic (it’s been collecting dust) and using one for gaming. But they need to be reupholstered and could use new foam, as well. Might be a spring project. Good luck with your R100!
@@mpgomatic thank you for such a quick response! After 5 years I didn't expect a response from anyone! :-)
@@enterthebiscuit Glad to help! I try to keep up on replies. I haven’t been able to shoot any automotive videos lately.
@@mpgomatic well i hope you're safe and well amid COVID. Oh quick question #2: anyb idea on torque settings for these fixings? I appreciate my project isn't a real car but just wondering.
I'm really curious of actual weight savings on this compared to OEM
HOW DO YOU INSTALL THE SEATBELTS???? Every video leaves it out and it and it doesn’t look like my stock belts bolt up to the brackets, at least in a safe way.
Great videos man.
Thanks Jacob Arman Ortega!
I wonder if its worth going for these over the nrg type r style seats
Do you remember if these were any lower compared to the stock seats?
do the sliders actually come with the screws to mount to the seats or no
im interested to know on the update on those seats . the upholstery that you had mentioned?
Good review! Is seat a deep enough and did your body turns out in seat? Thanks :)
Great vids just subscribed
Angelo Cruz Thanks!
I know this video was made in 2015 but where can i buy the mounts and sliders i have a 99 honda civic like yours
Hi, I'd like to see if you have any updates on this series
Another Slambo video coming soon, knock wood. It’s been off the road for a while.
Did you ever figure out the handles, covers, or heated seats?
Hey man, do you know where I could get those handles for the seats, mine unfortunately broke as well.
Did you buy bottom mount bolts and washers separately?
thanks for your rewiev helped me alot
+Chris FLPS Glad I could help! Are you going with the R100s?
+MPGomatic yes, but i'm not sure yet if i should order the fake leather ones or the ones you have. Which material do you think is more durable? ( want them for my daily driver)
Chris FLPS I'm not crazy about the cloth, but it would be cooler than vinyl in the summer. I'm still looking for a seat cover manufacturer to knock out leather covers. Is there a Sparco dealer near you or are you going to buy online?
+MPGomatic i'm still waiting for some offers, but i will probably buy them in a shop because i haven't tested yet if i fit in them. I'm 1,85m and muscular, you think that works?
Chris FLPS Maybe, they're kinda tight. The next model up is a good bit wider. I don't fit when I'm wearing a big winter coat. =)
Hey ! Any updates on the handles? a detailer broke off mine.. I spoke with sparco and they said they don't have replacements..
I've had the project on a back burner. The prototypes from the 3D printer that we used needed a lot of hand finishing. It was tough to get the fit right and the plastic material wasn't pliable enough. Getting them to snap securely into place is tough. But most importantly, the seats haven't held up well overall. The cloth upholstery faded badly and most importantly, the foam has deteriorated. I have been looking for a supplier to produce upgraded replacement foam and covers. The R100s look cool, but the materials that Sparco used are low quality.
good job
How tall are you? I just installed nrg defender seats in my 280zx, and im not happy with them especially being a non adjustable seat
I would love to get aftermarket seats but most cars now have airbags in them and saftey is important I guess.
Where can I try them!? I am in NY and there is no way for me to try them on. Man I want that seat so bad.
+Jason Lee Might need to take a road trip! Did you check the Where to Buy page on the SparcoUSA website? sparcousa.com/dealers
Great vid thanks for sharing, are the sparcos ligher than stock for your car?
Thanks! They might be. I need to borrow a scale to weigh the originals.
How did you get the seatbelt buckle to fit?
If I buy those seats. Can I use the old sliders and the old base or the bracket that came with the original seat?. Or would you rather recommend using all new stuff and throw all the of the old seat?
Adam Ismael Anything's possible if you have a shop with the right tools and can fabricate stuff from metal. I don't and can't. :) Going with new stuff is the cleanest, fastest way to get it done. The official Sparcos are beefy but pricey. There are knockoffs on eBay for half the price.
do these seats sit lower in than the oem civic seats? thinking of putting these in my hatch. Thanks
I think they are the same height but if you didnt put sliders on them then they will be alot lower
does it need side brackets?
how long did it take for installment? (i think i used the term wrong)
Not long! We got the work done in a few hours, without rushing.
Did it come with the bolts to mount your sliders and base or did you have to order that aswell?
Teh Koo Stock bolts were used to bolt the base to the floor. The other bolts were included (in the slider kit, if I'm not mistaken).
Are these suitable for a 2+2 car? I would like to keep my rear seats in my Volvo 480, is the recline enough?
If you are considering the R100s, I’d recommend finding a shop where you can try them out. The recline on the pair I had in my Civic was sticky and the handles broke.
I live in Ghana where we have no dealers for these seats, so I can’t try them out before I buy them. I’m a 6’3” man with a 38” waist. I don’t really know the width of my shoulders but my chest is about 44cm across, if that helps. I plan on putting these in my E30. Will I fit in them?
Eben Appiah-Agyekum They will be tight, at best. You might not fit. :(
So im a pretty tall guy and I need to no if i can go sliderless and fix them all the way back and as low as possible
Sliders are optional. You'd need to take a look at the bolt patterns to see how far back you can go. Sparco's website might have a diagram?
What seats do you have in your S2000? I'm debating on getting the Sparco Chrono or these R100?
The S2000 has the original Recaros. I wouldn’t buy any aftermarket seat without sitting in it. Look for a shop that stocks Sparco, so you can try them on for size.
Nice video, how much more comfortable are these seats compared to the stock seats??
Don Tundra Thanks, Don! Stock Civic seats will probably be more comfortable for most people, if the seats are in decent condition. The Sparcos are very narrow.
MPGomatic thanks!
A video on your s2000 please. What year, color and mileage on the s2000?
sungod1976 I'll shoot one at some point down the road. It's a stone stock white '07.
I don’t have a problem with the wide, but I am tall.
How tall are you, that seat fits well
I am a big guy (6'5" and about 320 lbs, muscle). I am assuming that these will not be comfortable at all. If they are too small, are there any other seats that you would recommend? I am a little budget minded and these seats are just at the right price for me.
The R100s will probably be too tight. The Sparco Chrono is wider, but more expensive - they're going for $440 on Amazon.
I don't know if he is saying that the R100 has no lumbar support, or no lumbar adjustability.
Where did I get the hardware from. I bought everything new and I have no bolts
Which pieces are you missing? I reused the stock floor bolts.
Can i fold the seats foward so that i can squeeze someone in the backseat ?
Yup
Would you say these seats sit at the same height as the OEM seats or are they lower?
With the Sparco bases, they’re lower, from memory. I had to sell the car a while back. 🥲
What's the device you install near the steering wheel in the beginning of the video? I have a 1999 Honda Civic Coupe
It's AutoMeter's EcoMeter gauge - plugs into the OBDII port. I don't use it with HX, because it doesn't understand the D16Y5's Lean Burn. If you have a normal engine it works great.
+MPGomatic ok thank you!!!😎
How much did you pay in total?
nice video
Thanks!
Any tips on removing the recline handles? I'm putting these in my c5 and there's no room for both handles.
I don't see am obvious removal method by looking at them
Hey were you ever able to put the r100s in your C5? I'm debating whether to put the Sparco R100 or Corbeau A4. We're you able to get around that and get them installed?
can i add these to my 2007 honda fit?
Not sure! They are skinny seats, but the mounting brackets are key.
What did you do with your seat belts? Did you have to get new ones or did you stick with the stock ones? I wanna get new seats for my 96 Firebird, but that's the only thing holding me back at the moment.
+Morgan Freeman I was able to use the stock belts. They bolted up with no problems.
+MPGomatic Sweet. Thanks for the help!
+Morgan Freeman Glad to help! If you can find a local shop to try out the seats before you buy them. The R100s are tight and you should be able to fit a wider/more comfortable seat into the Firebird.
Ayeeee pennsylvania life
Are those seats lighter than the OEM seats?
quasar15 Good question! I don't have a scale, so I wasn't able to weigh them with the mounts and sliders. The R100s weigh 26.9 lbs, according to the Sparco website. Amazon lists the sliders as 4.7 lbs, and 5 lbs for the mount (with an 11 lb shipping weight). Add that up and it's roughly 37 lbs. I still have the OEM seats. Need to borrow a scale and weigh them.
8:54 Doggie Photo-bombing Time
Will they fit a 36 waist?
Alex Bernabe They should!
I know this video is old. How did you install the seat belt? Did you buy a nut and bolt it on the rail? Did you bend the little tab on the buckle to make it fit?
+Ttran2600 It bolted up without too much effort. Have you already bought the seats?
Yes I did buy the seats. I have the seats. The same rails and sliders as you have.
Ttran2600 Did you get cloth or vinyl? Mine (cloth) have not held up well. There are issues with the foam. I need to contact Sparco to see what they can do to address the problems.
MPGomatic I purchased the clothe material like you did. What kind of foam problems are you having? How long have you had them?,
Ttran2600 Roughly 20K miles. Foam seems like it's falling apart. I need to take off the covers to see exactly what's going on.
Better looks than Stock seats...
These seats would make great gaming seats.
Sure, i mean if your not planning to spend all day playing the games while sitting in the seat cuz it's not going to be that comfortable
I am just building a sim racing cockpit and chose this seat. It was a budget choice but should be ok until I've worked out whether i need to spent 2x the price on something like the Sparco GT. I literally just ordered the r100 so will find out next week.
@@enterthebiscuit So... What did you end up doing? Did you keep the R100 or swap it out?
@@SkitzerPoindexter actually no sooner had i ordered it than there were stock issues and delivery issues so I abandones that and upgraded my outlook. I bought a Corbeau reclining seat in fabric. Real car seat, 400 quid. Still got it. Opted for the lumbar support option (inflatable). Works great. Bottom mounting, on Sparco sliders.
@@enterthebiscuit Cool. Thanks for the quick reply.
If you don't mind me asking, what is your height/weight? Asking because I'd like to compare to myself in terms of fitment of course!
Chris Brown I'm 5'10", 200+. Find a local shop to try them on for size, if possible. I will knock out an update video on the seats soon.
What do you use for antitheft? it would be a shame if it gotten stolen one day and it being stripped out for parta then left in a ditch somewhere...

A qd steering wheel?
Thanks for making this vid MPGomatic. My handles broke on day 1. Any chance you're selling those custom handles you've made? I'd totally buy them off you. If not, what should I do?
Bummer about the handles, Michael Serna! Maybe ... How fast do you need them? We need to do more work to get the 3D printed handles to fit well. The inside of the handles need to be sanded down and smoothed out. Not sure how long the tweaks will take. I haven't looked at them in over a month ... it's been too nasty cold here to work on the car.
MPGomatic Thanks for replying back MPGomatic. Yeah, I'd like them sometime this month or next. Or whenever it gets warm out there. I'd like to have 2 pairs of them. Thank you so much for the work and videos you do.
Michael Serna Thanks for the kind words! I'll check in with the modeler and get this back on track. Stay tuned ...
Yo shoulders are not lined up at all to the shoulder support
What size bolts to mount the sliders?
Not sure, Teh Koo. The bolts were included in the Sparco slider kit.
Are they Sparco 400 series base and sliders ?
Çağrı Yalçın 600 series: www.sparcousa.com/product/seat-base-600-series … way too expensive for a budget build. :/
Still making/selling those handles?
SpideyLovesGwen Never went past the prototype stage. Not enough interest to take it to production. 3D printed pieces only.
Do you need the sliders?
+Willam Aue You could save a few bucks by bolting the seat directly to the mount.
Cuánto te costó en dólares
Me myself I like stock ek seats...they beat e.g. seats any day
But not SI EF seats!!
I'm interested in picking up a pair of those handles from you for my R100's. Are they available?
***** They need a bunch of tweaks and finish work. The 3D printed pieces aren't smooth on all sides. The ridge-lines from the plastic fibers are kinda cool ... I could live with that, but the bottom line is that they need to fit right. (I'll shoot a video with some close ups so you can see the crazy textures.) Sanding each piece by hand is way too time-intensive ... we need to make tiny changes to the inside of the handles so they snap right into place and stay there.
MPGomatic
Sounds good, keep me posted. I'll buy two the day they are ready :)
MPGomatic Just got my R100's in the mail and one handle was broken right out of the box. great. Any updates? Maybe I could just buy the file from you and 3D print it here? Let me know! thanks
Do these sit lower or higher than stock?
A bit lower than stock on my Civic with the Sparco mounts and sliders. Maybe an inch or more?
Do they have mounts for this seat for my 03 vw gti?
Steven De La Torre it’s a more or less a universal mount sparco sells but it’s stupid expensive like 140
Why would he know that though? Why don’t you google it 😂 people think youtubers are just infinitely knowledgeable about applications the video isn’t even for a VW
my question is will this shit snap if im rear ended
The whole 2 seats are 330??
RolooTV Each seat - without mount or slider - was $330.
After putting the seats in, Do you sit lower?
Ihùuba✊🏾g37s I’d reckon so.
At least your bracket fits your car. Have to do some heating and bending with mine.
The civic needs mirror deletes
Mirrors installed inside the car..
Under drive P.S. pulley
Light weight crank and alt pulleys
Custom crank scraper or Windage tray...
Light weight flywheel ....
Smoothie wheel covers ...
Fully syn 0w30 oil
I personally would have done weight reduction instead of new carpet and seats....
Custom carbon cevlar body parts and interior panels and block offs
Fix It Up 219 👍🏻 Check our the Ain’t Fuelin playlist … I’ve done a bunch of experiments to the car over the years. New carpet and seats made the interior a whole lot more livable. The carpet was money and time well-spent. The seats, much less so. It may be time for the HX to find a new home. I need something that’s tunable.
What kind of seats do you think I should get from sparco I'm around 215
Brandon Wilson Depends on your car & budget! Look for a nearby retailer that has the seats on display.
Hey bro, i want to buy a pair of r100 but i think that they sell Just the seat?
The seat, slider, base and hardware are sold separately. You have to choose the correct bases for your car. Check out the Amazon link in the description. You should be able to find all the pieces you need.
+MPGomatic Mmm i have a volkswagen 72 but i need to seats for my codriver n me, i need an universal base, track set, Hardware, the seat base 600 series doesnt work? N what about the side mount?
+Joshua Campos The 600 doesn't fit or is out of stock? Does the Sparco website provide alternatives?
+MPGomatic The 600 doesnt fit
+Joshua Campos You might have to fab something. Maybe based on the TMI Seat Adapter Brackets 47-5031?
How did you put the seat buckle back
Jairo Martinez Bolted up without much effort.
I think my are different because they don’t have where to install the buckle seat bell
is that leather or cloth?
Leather on a $330 seat? Nope. It’s cloth and it hasn’t held up well. The seats need to be recovered and AFAIK, there’s nothing on the market. :(
Is the height a problem ? Do they sit too deep or too high ?
Wael Rayyes They fit well in the Civic with the Sparco bases. What are you planning to bolt them into?
A golf 4
Wael Rayyes Best bet might be to use the seat dimension chart on Sparco's website to measure against the stock seats.
OK thanks a lot for the help :)
Wael Rayyes Good luck with it!
i need the seat brackets for my 2010 honda fit sport, any ideas?
Where did you buy your seats from? An authorized Sparco dealer should be able to hook you up with the brackets.
Im getting these seats for my car here soon can you please link me where you got the sliders? thank you
***** Check with www.rallylights.com or thmotorsports.com ... there should also be a list of retailers on the Sparco website.
hi , can I put on my bmw 318 e30 ?
+Shala Shala It looks like Sparco makes a seat mount for the e30. This page shows the pieces that you'll need: www.mpgomatic.com/sparco-r100-...
As a mechanical engineering student doing my last year, the way you leave those bolts lightly torqued is making me cringe really bad. You really want to tighten all bolts down pretty well so that the mating between the plates you're holding together is solid. Otherwise, the bolts will be taking all the force and won't hold up as well in a crash. Don't overdo it as you don't want to strip the threads, but do tighten steel-on-steel systems better than how you show in the video.
Many thanks for the heads-up and congrats on getting your college work done! I'll check the bolts and tighten things up at the next available opportunity. I can add stickies to the video, as well. Do you have specific times?
4:45 is the start of the slider rail of the installation. With socket head cap screws of that size (looks like a 9/16"), you should put about as much torque as your forearm can comfortably put out when extended (The same muscle action as opening a door handle, just more forcefully). Actual torque should be about 5-10 ft-lb.
xmodalloy Added the annotation. Thanks again!
No worries! It's not something I learned in my studies until last year. There are a lot of obscure bits of knowledge that can be very important to know. I really wish there was some sort of "elementary mechanical concepts" class that was mandatory in high school. It would make the world a safer place! Alas, that won't happen. Thanks for the annotation change!
+xmodalloy You can't fully tighten the first bolt until you start the second bolt. Cause if the rail shifts during tightening then the second hole will be off. Then you cant start the second bolt. Seems like an engineer would know that? Maybe take a class on common sense?
Can i use this for a brz
+isaac Probably, but I f I had a BRZ, I'd get a better seat than this. Best bet is to find a local shop where you can try the seats out for size. Make sure they fit you before you buy … 💸💸💸
