WHAT A GREAT you tube VIDEO! This is the way Stephen Walsh/Connemara Marble pronounces it! Thank you and Sláinte! (I put this you tube on my FB post. Thank you!) --gv
Thanks for posting this, and perhaps you can help me with something. My Irish grandmother used to say cheers as something like, "Slàinte gethulika". Does that ring a bell with you?
Wild Goose Thanks. Not all sure about the second word, but it sounded something like that. She was born around 1900, so it could be an older expression.
@@mydogdeli well, I asked a few native Irish speakers and they didn't recognise it - one suggested 'slán codlata' which would eb said at bedtime - other than that, nothing - I'm sorry! I guess it must be something old as you suggest or something particular to your grandmother!
Not just in Ireland... it's pronounced the same in Scottish Gaelic (even though the accent on the.'a' is written differently) and is often said up in the north east and west coasts as well as highlands and islands. It's a shame us Scots aren't as proud of our original language as the Irish are of theirs! You certainly won't hear any Gaelic if you go to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee...
Ancestors... That's a really nice word...
Thanks Rahul!
Finally! there were 3 other stupid videos before this one that got it ALL WRONG... thank you for this!
Hi Iona, thanks for this - so glad you liked it and we got it right!
