I'm willing to entertain the idea that all the worship and sacrifices to the Emperor had those souls absorbed by his, and that he has a realm in the warp, which is where Celestine goes when she dies, and where other saints regenerate after death. A funny thing about the Astartes being taken away from the Emperor's personal and primary achievements is that it's actually return to day one, as the original coverage of the Astartes process was framed as some of the Emperor's scientists going over their results. In a wider sense, he may be unfathomably superhuman, but the other Perpetuals were no slouches either and there's been so much gene-modding caked on that vaguely comparable absurd geniuses can emerge at random, and he cannot wipe his ass with causality, so Neoth could be stuck reserving his incredible brainpower for military planning and governance to keep the foundational efforts on track, leaving everything he could get away with to others for the sake of making sure that food supplies don't fall through and work-crews are at high efficiency.
This then introduces a complication on his return: He can't actually manage the modern Imperium to the same degree. So outsource, outsource, outsource, desperately cycle corruption, purge the everliving crap out of departmental rivalries to bring down the friction, and generally LOOK like a continuous flawless wrecking ball but in reality JUST barely pull the Imperium out of its death-spiral because he may be the most capable man in the galaxy, but it's still bigger than him.

I can strangely see a scenario that functions like many fantasy books about the rise of the Starchild and how he goes through the archetypical "Hero's Journey." Here is how the scenario could go:
    - In a foreseeable large conflict after the Great Rift, a child is found in a strange place on the battlefield, much like all other primarchs. His appearance might have been viewed as "a Star, blind the shadows in the warp," seen by all psychers and somehow calming them after the Chaos stress and corruption that they had.
    - The child is taken after viewing omens that signal his divine connection to the Emperor, a whole repeat of the Logar situation. This is something that would alarm Rowboat Gigachad to extreme, but he doesn't know about him yet.
    - The child is good, as in objectively and purely good, Disney childhood kind of good. Heretics were brought up to him and he just forgave them, and the touch of the warp was removed from them. He would be heavily inspired by Jesus Christ, and plays the part as well. Even Celestine would decend one day and bless him kind of holy.
    - Robotic Gearlyshift and his brother Prisly L'Bronson finally find him and they are very much suspicious of him, like is he their father, is he their brother, or is he a new mutation that is simply a Blank Ultra+??? If he is their father, then how much does he remember. If he is their brother, would he betray them like one half of them. If a blank, can they repeat the mutation and can they allow the existence of such an individual who would be worshipped as a god. They don't know and they don't know how to handle him.
    - He is too nice, as in debilitating himself kind of nice. He makes mistakes, is too trusting, and is creating all sorts of enemies within the Ecclesiarchy and the Inquisition who hate him forgiving attitude. To stack it above that, he is also no where close to the primarchs in Strength, Intelligence, or Capabilities. He is for all intent a normal child with blank powers that purifies all around him.
    - Something happens and he is forced to change, become slowly a more similar to the Original pre-Neoth Emperor version, even gaining superior powers the more he removes himself from humanity and kindness, all while the two primarchs are seeing this and are both terrified that they are being replaced by an unknown version of the Emperor, perhaps an exact version that is more harsh, and saddened by the fact that for all intents a "brother" of theirs is losing all his humanity and compassion that they grew to admire somehow being drawn out of him for the sake of keeping the Imperium alive. Perhaps they even know he is their brother, but he has to sacrifice his personality for the sake of slowly allowing the Emperor to manifest in him, slowly removing him, e.g. the opposite of how Richboy Grappyhand had to stay within his armor, only to slowly remove his dependency on it.
The main idea of Grimdark is not that good things like the "Good T'au" can't exist, but that their existence is anathema to the world around them and they would slowly die unless they adapt and harden themselves, like the current "dictator T'au."
Grimdark doesn't exist in the absence of Good, but by the abolishment of it in the most horrifying and depressing manner. Queue "Evil is not the absence of Good,..." saying.

I've always been a fan of the Secret Heresy theory: In that final battle between the Emperor and Horus.... Horus Won.
The Emperor was unable to strike down his beloved son, and though he was wounded, Horus slew his father. As the Emperor planned. We know the Emperor made some kind of deal with the chaos gods in order to create the Primarchs. Letting his son kill him was his key to shafting them and never paying the bill. Meanwhile, Horus had also cut a deal with the Ruinous Powers. Him taking his Father's place on the throne denied the chaos gods their final prize. He used his own sorcery to create an illusion over himself even his brothers couldn't see through.
He'd stolen their blessings and with the endless fuel of thousands of psykers, Horus became strong enough to stop them from taking back their gifts. Horus sits on the throne, and powers the astronomicon. He is not as eternal as his father was, so his body decays but still he lives and slowly ascends towards godhood, intending to eclipse his father in every way. That's why the remaining Chaos legions call him THE FALSE EMPEROR. They all know that the original is gone, and that their former leader betrayed them all for his own glory and power.
That's why the modern Imperium looks nothing like the atheist paradise the Emperor wanted. That's why everything is going wrong. Because the wrong man took the throne.

In terms of the Star Child... I got the impression that it IS the Emperor, from a certain point of view. Rather like the Christian Trinity, the Star Child is an embodied version of his consciousness, his 'body' sits upon the golden throne, and his... fragmented soul is spread across the warp, trying to reassemble itself and is getting better over time (for example, when Guilliman returns and Big E is able to pull himself together and talk to his son - but he couldn't have done that a few thousand years ago as he was too fragmented).

Well, while Khorne et al might have a more widespread source of fuel (anger, lust, etc), nobody has anywhere near the amount of ORGANISED religion that Big E does. Everyone gets angry, yes, but there aren't a lot of people who explicitly organise Khornate worship. The Emprah, on the other hand, has literal tens of billions of people praying to him and explicitly worshipping him every single day. I can absolutely believe that he would be able to stand up to the other 4 despite having a technically-smaller powerbase.

I will say, I really do enjoy the old lore that the Emperor was the result of humanity's ancient shamans committing mass suicide to merge themselves into one consciousness and one being. It makes his purpose seem ... grander than if he was just some uber powerful psyker. It would also go a ways towards explaining the lack of psykers until Long Night. In essence, all of humanity would have merged its psychic potential into one being.
The idea of a young Emperor not really knowing what to do with his abilities and how he should go about his duty of helping Mankind is a fascinating one.
In regard to the Star Child, I like the theory that he is a large fragment of the Emperor's remaining soul. In reality, the Emperor of the 41st Millennium is likely more God than Man. It seems likely that the Golden Throne would cause his actual soul to continuously splinter off into the Warp out of sheer torment. What is actually maintaining the Emperor at this point is likely the Warp Entity that is the God Emperor.
If the Golden Throne were to fail, I imagine the Emperor's barely living corpse being puppetted by the God Emperor would finally be allowed to die. In dying, as a perpetual existence, he would likely be reborn through the Star Child.

Shouldn't it be kind of cool that when the golden throne fail and the Emperor finally dies, the Star Child is born at that very moment?
The Star Child shows up in a massive flash of golden light, and descend down from the sky to see his own dead body. He turns to see all humans kneeling as if they are in the presence of God. The Emperor is confused by this, and order them to stand and treat him like a man. When he finally understand that they worship him as a God and he instinctively denies this until. Until a voice echos through the halls that say "FOOL". The corpse of the Emperor just spoke.
The Star Child turns around only to see the corpse of the Emperor rise. The corpse Emperor talks to the star child as if he is a unruly child, and calls him foolish for denying his Godhood. It turns out that the corpse of the Emperor is actually possessed by aspect of a new Chaos God. The Chaos God everyone has been worshiping all this time. A new Chaos God that has been reborn into the real world and does not fully live within the Immaterium. The Star Child finally grows tired of the discussion and attacks the corpse Emperor. However he is still just a child as of yet. Stronger, faster and much more powerful than any human has a right to be, but still just a man. The corpse Emperor, using the experience and power from the Emperors past can easily match the Star Child even if his own strength simply can't be fully utilized yet as he himself has recently been birthed into this corpse. The Star Child is only saved from death by huge effort and loss Adeptus Custodes and Roboute Guiliman himself.
This event cause a complete rift within the Imperium of Man. Every single faction has to pick a side now that the Emperor has returned. Should follow this new Emperor that came from some old prophecy that almost no one even know about? Should they follow the body they have been worshiping and kept all this time? Do they even know they will worship a chaos god? How do they know this new Emperor actually is the Emperor?
What will happen to the universe now when the Astronomican is gone? Or is it actually gone? Can the corpse Emperor keep it lit to claim he is the real Emperor?
What will all the enemies of man do while the whole Imperium is shaken down it its very core?
Just a thought here. I don't think it fit all of the established lore, but from what I have seen this seems far from the worst overreach.

If I remember correctly from the Plague wars books then Guilliman's audience with his father showed us that the Emperor is somewhat ¨Shattered¨ or perhaps ¨scattered¨ would be better to say. It seemed like he is still there but it takes so much of him to manifest even for a moment. It is almost as if the different souls that make up the emperor is fighting for control now instead of being a true single being. Also the countless psykers that have been sacrificed to him over the millenia must surely make it harder for him to return. I have a feeling and a theory that Magnus might be a key to help the emperor coaless back into his true self again but that could only happen if Magnus was redeemed. I still see Magnus as the one Primarch that can be truly redeemed but that would involve humbling him properly and shatter Tzeentch's veil over his eyes.

      @igooog Год назад +1

Wouldn't necessarily require a redeemed Magnus. One of the coolest parts of Magnus is that his fall to chaos shattered him into shards; could be as simple as rounding up the shards and somehow binding them together with the demon boy, and sacrificing the whole.

@@igooog Perhaps, but I am kinda interested what would happen if the best part of Magnus which is currently a part of Janus (Revuel Arvida) joined back with the rest of him. Would there be a struggle between light and dark? Kinda why Magnus is one of my favorites cause of the myriad ways he can go.

Love you always use the old lore for the Necrons where they awoke from their slumber still slaves to the C'tan and wanting to harvest the galaxy to feed their hungry gods. I do prefer the newer lore to be honest. I know. THE SHEER HERESY!! But the idea they rebelled against the C'tan at the end of the War in Heaven and were so battered and beaten they couldn't survive the hellish warp infested galaxy in the aftermath they had to sleep for eons so the galaxy could heal. Is a much better plot point. And The Slient King destroyed the command protocols so that what was left of the broken minds of the Necron could be somewhat "alive" rather than obedient automatons. Lead to some very interesting and epic stories later down the years. Besides the shitey writing of GW where they can't make up their minds of these guys will be robots or undead soul broken race trying regain their lost glories and for some their lost "humanity" (Necrontyr-ity sounded too weird lol)

Honestly given what he is up to on the throne. I wouldn't expect him to do anything more that he is currently doing. Holding back a demonic incursion while being a warp navigation tool, and projection of his warp will. The idea that he had his body back in living form, doesn't suddenly make it possible for him to personally lead armies.

I figure that a being of the Emperor's psychic potency, being persistently immersed in the Warp, battling Chaos directly, while also having trillions of worshippers as the protector of humanity from Chaos, could have converted the man into the legend. Have the Emperor gain true apotheosis with the death of his mortal form, while the Chaos Gods actually legitimately cooperate for once against a foe that could genuinely threaten them. Meanwhile, the tyrannids, the Tau, and the various legacies of the Old Ones threaten to wipe out both sides. It would be a transition to a new kind of status quo of unending war. It would also be a kind of mashup of 40k and 30k, and much as I like 30k, I feel like 40k is best on its own.

so my personal theory on the meta of the 'starchild' is that GW spread the seeds of senseis and the starchild as a sort of alpha version of 40kEndTimes with an age of sigmar-style narrative following it. after the beta version, in WHFantasy and the negative reception, GW course-corrected 40k to stay what it was, making the birth of the emperor chaos god as the big looming end. no idea what they want to do now - I'd guess keep 40k running as it is just with all the most popular characters, eg. primarchs returning.
thus in this framework the emperor or star child 'awakening' would utterly destroy the known multiverse of realspace and the warp existing in a sort of harmony, creating a pseudo-age of sigmar-like world of fractured realms.
the problem with theory-crafting in 40k is always that the narrativa alone does not suffice.
the meta-analysis will be needed when theory-crafting future canon.
GW will probably never pull a second end-times, a second AoS debacle, so whatever they want to asspull this time will be future canon.
primaris were made in-lieu of stormcast eternals
    change my mind.

Smart thing is to take a page from the mcu pre Endgame. Gradually bring in each primarch, the silent king, awaken the necrons, birth ynnead, introduce several planetary-mass tyranid fleets approaching terra, increase the number of saints, produce a new ork waagh with pseudo krorks increasing to krorks as the numbers grow to a quintillion, elaborate on the radical inquisition factions that are trying to make the emperor reincarnate, grow space Marine chapters once again to billions strong legions, and converge everything to a point where the golden throne fails and in the intervening time between the failure of the astronomicon and the return of the emperor, all the factions converge on Sol. Hell, even the dark Eldar could try to worship ynnead or the emperor in an attempt to raise up an opponent to slaanesh which will free them from the soul drain. Bring it all together and bam. Big E comes back in the last moment.

I am more for the Emperor achieving apotheosis path. It’s payoff for the saints stuff and would also connect more to the Watchers and their anti warp abilities. Not to mention that’s where a lot of the recent DA lore seems to be pointing. Perhaps a mix of the sensei stuff as Big E seems to be waiting for something.
I also like the idea that this is a fate that he has known about from a vision and have been trying to avoid this whole time because of some dark outcome.

  • @cognisant307

Personally I think the most interesting way this could play out is if the EoM splits into two entities, one reborn as a mortal psyker, and the other becomes essentially the chaos god of order. That may sound impossible but hear me out, the chaos gods are not truly chaotic, they cause chaos and devastation in the material realm but the chaos gods themselves are entirely beholden to their nature and cannot deviate from it. Even Tzeentch is consistent in that he is consistently inconsistent, if you challenged Tzeentch to remain in the same form for an entire year (a seemingly trivial task for a god) he wouldn't be able to, he is the chaos god of change and so he MUST constantly be changing. Now as the god of order this new warp entity version of the Emperor would be a great boon to the Imperium but it is ultimately a chaos god and its powers are no less ruinous than the others. So in effect the Imperium ends up being split between the new Emperor who is very much not a god and is quick to shoot down anyone worshiping him, and the God Emperor the Imperium inadvertently created that ends up running what is essentially it's own realm of chaos, one with a very gold and angelic motif. I guess the downside is that it's an all consuming faith, if you worship this God Emperor you'll gradually lose your sense of yourself until you're nothing but an instrument of the god's will, as much the same as it is with the other four.

I always took the Star Child as a warp entity born from humanities faith in big E, not big E himself.
It seems silly to me that 10,000 years of worship hasn't created such a thing.
It took less effort to birth Slaanesh.

My guess is that we will end up with two Emperors when the golden throne breaks, the astronomicon goes out, and earth being swallowed by a warp energy explosion.
The first being, the entity that we know as the Emperor regenerates and walks the physical plain again.
The second being, is the chaos god created from all the Emperor worshiping people dying similar to how slaneesh was created. Giving birth to their own idealized version from millenia of worship.
A two headed eagle, one within the warp, and one without.
