In the early 1950s, when I was a kid, my father taught me photography with his Leica equipment, both how to shoot pictures and how to develop black and white film and make prints from the negatives. I still use Leica equipment because the lenses are outstanding! I also still have my darkroom, but I have not used it in 2 years because I bought Leica's T digital camera to use with my M and R lenses with the appropriate adapters and Photoshop is replacing my darkroom. Boy, I will miss my enlarger, trays, and the familiar odors of the chemicals!
Happy Birthday, Paul. Amazing images. Those long exposures of the trees are first rate! And the dogs...👍🏻
It's a pity that I can only give one like... One of the most touching videos, i've seen lately. Many thanks for this wonderful Work and greetings from Austria!
Thankyou
I start to watch the video and from the first seconds i need to tell you :WHAT A MARVELOUS PLACE!!!!!
Love the shot of the dogs playing, with the storm in the background!
Belated Happy Birthday! That was a beautiful video with amazing imagery and music. I’m glad you took time to relax and share your experience with us. What a beautiful country you live in. The photos at the end were breathtaking, I especially love the photo of the two dogs in the water with the mountains in the background.
Thanks Michael
Awesome man, nothing like getting away to get grounded again and just enjoy the simple things & times. Beautiful shots, a lot of character in those old style baches & the tree in lake is fantastic!
Thank you
Yes, Paul, your message came across very well, and I definitely did enjoy :-) Relaxing, simplifying, getting in the zone, and then just being open to what presents itself photographically. Best therapy there is.
Happy birthday Paul. Photography have many connection to how you feel and the way you take the pictures! Great video and pictures and what a beautiful place you are there.
Thanks Marco
Whether an image is still or moving, painted or captured with a lens and a funny box, they should always tell a story. There’s some amazing photographers on RUclips, often on the smaller channels, Steve O'Nions, David Hancock, Tim Layton to name but a few. These guys have inspired me, taught me and at times blown me away.
However, there's one person who stands head and shoulders above all others in his ability to tell a story both in his videos and in his stills photography. That’s you of course. You have a phenomenal gift that you’ve honed into a craft. I have never seen a video of yours I thought was "OK". Some stand out more than others, the guy with the boat, the singer, the little lad with CP, the films you found and traced the guy on them and the scrap yard. Even at your base level your videos are excellent, but this one like many others is well above that.
Happy Birthday and thank you.
Hi Mark, putting these videos out is always difficult. The time taken, the selection of content etc etc and as always putting yourself out there and exposing yourself for all to see, is forever quite daunting. But having genuine people comment like you do, makes it well worthwhile and reassuring. So thanks for again taking time out of your day to firstly watch and secondly take time to compile such thoughtful comments and reflections. This beyond how many subs I get, likes or loves, is the main reason for me to start thinking about my next piece. Thanks again take care and see you again in a few days.
I keep coming back to this channel for inspiration and it works overtime. Thank you and Happy Birthday!
Thanks Maxx
Paul, you are one of the most refined and pleasent “author” we can meet in the YT photography environment. Sensitivity, art, quality, nere. It’s a pleasure to enjoy your videos. Even if I am late: Happy Birthday!

Grazie Luca

Nothing more nothing less thanks Philip
Happy birthday mate. It’s important for everyone to just get away from it all at least once a year. I’m glad I saw this, it’s just prompted me to do something similar in a couple of months. Some lovely shots by the way. There’s nothing like putting a couple of rolls through a camera and just relaxing and having nothing else to worry about for those few hours.
Thanks Jas

Happy Birthday, Paul! Amazing content! This was so relaxing🍃. We needed this. Sending positive vibes from New York City !
Thankyou Jay, positive vibes greatly appreciated!
Another wonderful video, thanks Paul. Also, belated Happy Birthday. I completely identify with the sentiments you expressed here. Last September we started a much anticipated long distance move (1,000 km), to Vancouver Island. When we arrived we had not yet found a new home so we rented a comfortable, but rustic, cottage for a couple of months. We had with us enough of our own things to get by. It turned into a thoroughly relaxing and hugely enjoyable time. As a result, there was no "stuff" to get in the way of enjoying where we were. I made lots of photographs, and it felt good. We are now in our new home, and we love it. But, there is always stuff to do that has been getting in the way of just being creative. I crave that relaxed, no pressure time at the cottage.
Hi Chris, I totally relate to your situation and your words of experience have arrived at good time for me. Thanks for watching!!
I needed to hear a dialogue like that right now in my life. Thanks Paul. Beautiful as always.
Thanks Sean

I was always told, when things weren't going right in my life to step back for a while ... but as i have gotten old, i find that isn't true, as now i grasp on to what i have got left & that is the simple things in life similar to your little stay in a little house by the water. Thank you for sharing your moments & Photography as i appreciate the time you spend putting your vlogs together. Have always found stepping forward again can take time !!
Thanks Gerald, this place reminded me of your slice of heaven, that end of the earth thing!

Thanks David
I sold my house in Wellington 18 months ago, and bought a little ex-weekender cabin by Palliser Bay in the southern Wairarapa, where I now live.
As a photographer I have never been happier.
I so understand how you felt on your few days off Paul.
Thanks man, glad you got it
Happy birthday, Paul. The world you take is very beautiful. Keep shooting film cameras, photos, videos, and the irreplaceable Earth. I am looking forward to it. From Japanese fans

Stunning landscapes Paul. Another inspiring video, thank you.
Happy birthday, Paul! Wondeful place you are!
Holy crudknuckles! We are on the SAME PAGE my brother! While I can't afford a Leica, I am using a Minolta CLE and the lenses that go with it along with a Hasselblad kit I inherited from my father. Wish I could walk about and shoot with you! Guess I will just have to watch your videos and have you as a shoot partner vicariously!
Cheers James
Beautiful. Very contemplative. Thank you.

Wonderful video!
Thoughtful and lovely work, too.
Thanks for all you do
Happy Birthday Paul. While I'm not Kiwi, I am married to one and love your videos especially because I get to live in NZ vicariously through your images. Been convincing my wife to move back. We will be visiting this December and at some point end up in Taupo. Any spots you might recommend for landscapes outside of the famous spots? Thanks.
Hi James they are all beautiful, its just how you frame them. Enjoy your visit and thanks for watching.
Happy Birthday Paul, thanks for the very peaceful video, the long exposures are beautiful. Will there be an update on Reids progress.
Hi Jeg thankyou, yes I will be dooing a channel update in the next week or two. But Reid has just had surgery 2 days ago. Thanks for asking!...

Excellent images, glad you are managing a break away from the norm. I liked the dreamy long exposures of the trees in the lake. Wasnt sure that padlock was worth the effort given the lock had clearly rotted away, nice image all the same.
Happy Birthday too.
Thanks Dave
All the best for your birthday and the year ahead!
Thankyou
I love film. Digital's a pain. I enjoy simpler times. Besides it looks better. Great video. To thyself be true.
Ta Ants
Well done Paul. Happy Belated 😎
Happy Birthday. Amazing images.
Thanks Scott
What a beautiful vid.! You put your heart and soul into your work and creativity. Thank You. We don't need all the "stuff". Equipment can be minimum. A Leica needs fe w additions. One or 2 lenses.
A few filters. That's it. I worked with a M3, Collapsible-Summicron for all my pro career. The Hassie again the 80mm, the 150mm. Extension tubes. Digital makes work easier. I use small sensor cameras for color. I'm retired. I did use a Pentax from 2004 as I began in digital. Some Clients were not happy. It's the results. I am getting to understand you. We come from similar education system. British. Me South Africa but now Canadian Eh! all the very best. Noted as Covid was coming! Now we see the huge differences in society. again all best.
Thanks Jason
Happy birthday, keep it up.
Nice pics. I can't imagine it being very cold with leaves on the trees and green grass but you seemed dressed for chilly weather - I guess a set of islands can be quite dominated by the surrounding seas - how cold is it? Any snow ever?
I think it was 3deg celcius this spot is right under Mount Ruapehu
37ish - that's chilly-ish.
Happy birthday Paul!
Grazie

Paul C Smith Photographer only a year out still makes you ten years older than me 😉
Happy Birthday Paul
Happy Birthday, Paul! Love the images and thoughts. Looks like my kind of place! Btw, I've been meaning to ask you a question: Do you rely solely on the meter in your M6? I don't ever see you using a handheld meter.
Hi Alan I very rarely meter with a hand held device and when I do the batteries are usually flat. Thanks for your kind wishes
Your images remind me of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bookends" Beautiful photos and song.
Thanks Patrick
best video thus far
Thankyou
Loved this. We think we need so much of everything and we're never really satisfied at all. I feel overwhelmed sometimes about competition and struggling to make it on today's market and photography has indeed put food on the table for years now but somehow I just want to enjoy taking photographs and being successful in the process if possible but I just don't want to need anything.
I hear you man
@@PaulCSmithPhotographer Thanks. Love the picture with the dogs above all
Happy Birthday Paul!!
Thanks Andrew
Paul C Smith Photographer loved your images, and sound track too Paul.
Love the inclusion of the light switch in the photo of the painting. I can hear the purists gnashing their teeth and muttering about the rule of thirds.
Brilliant shot of the dogs and transplanting the wanaka tree ...genius :)
Wanaka tree without the crowds. Thanks man!
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday!
Happy 🎂Couple of your best images there.

Nescafe Gold on a thermos can be the best coffee in the world in the right surroundings :-)
Totally!
