Indians buy bleaches and fairness products, which are also advertised with leading film stars endorsing these products. We must admit we are obsessed with skin colour to the extent that we would accept advertisements portraying darker women as less employable than fair skinned women. And the word gora or gori ( fair skinned )being used almost as a synonym for beauty is accepted in our society. If we aren't racist then I do not know who is.
They are all supposed to be a group of international dancers with Ms. Hawa Hawaii as their main attraction. Since India back then didn't have the concept of political correctness, I guess they just decided to paint the same local brown dancers black to portray them as dancers of a different nationality, thereby cutting down the expenditure while still giving the group an international feel (back in the day).

Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom. Around the same time as this movie Mr. India. Perhaps you'd try to explain the scenes, images, and symbols in that? I rest my case.
Indiana Jones was not racist as well. Nor was Mr. India. It's just a depiction of people in movies. That's all. It's not about being racist but just doing something to have something. India and the black culture is big enough to enjoy humor and such situations. There's a white guy for crying out loud in this movie Mr. India who's made to look like a bumbling idiot. Loads of Indian movies make the white guy the villain and Indians generally are openly racist against the whites (gorahs as they're called). Reflects a lot in Indian movies where they openly mock white people. Why doesn't Mod Missy bitch about that then?

Why is everyone saying it's not meant to be racist? For the longest time, Americans didn't 'mean' to be racist either. This is clearly blackface, irrespective of what was meant. And Indians are quite racist, according to black people who visit as tourists, students or even live in India (there are testimonial articles about this). Our obsession with fair skin says enough about whether or not we are racist.

I am sure there was. It just wasn't recognised. Black facing the background dancers to dance as idiots is dehumanizing black people. Back then, black people were just thought of as freaks from Africa. And that is racist. It just wasn't recognised as racism.
We take black white both faces as joke...truly...in india nobody serious about their color...using white cream product is other matter....#Also in this, nothing wrong.....#Keep reacting...always love ur reaction...

If I remember correctly Sridevi comes disguised as an African dancer so that's why her crew is black
But I'll have to watch it again to confirm
Try Charlie chaplin scene of Sridevi from the movie Mr India and dont forget to watch the song Kisi ke hath na ayegi yeh ladki
These r some cool stuff she did in back 90s
I dont know why people say indian are racist ....like seriously!!! There is no discrimination in the laws ...theres no difference in the rights shared by all colors of ppl in india...and if some ppl like their partner to be bright color then that is their type their choice its not racism .....and the black color guys were just painted black to meet the choreography and costume ....if thats the case then i think that tarzan should have been offended just becoz they wore costume and danced like tarzan.....its not racism ....racism is when theres difference in their rights or they are mistreated ....
LOL This is one of those things that was hilarious and fun when we were kids
and now just looks HIDEOUSLY RACIST !!!!!
It is just something that was seen as funny then.
but I still love Sridevi so DAMN IT!
NO there is no need for blackface
yh agree with you... this type of songs were made only for fun then 😄
It was what it was for the time and your culture. Not everyone everywhere has the same standards.
Sridevi is the queen of hearts.
Actresses nowadays aren't that versatile compared to older heroines like Sridevi, Madhuri and Tabu
And Govinda 🤭🤭
Madhuri was versatile? Joke. Is that why she took a break from films- because she can't act like people expect actors to?

No one actually paid attention to the background dancers during that time because sridevi presence made everyone else out of focus. I think they were trying to portray like dancers from different parts of the world. She is one of the famous female superstars.
Yes, they were shown dark and Sridevi was fair which will make her stand out and hence the audience would not notice what the makers have done
Just learned that painting your face(black) is racist in America. Fun fact: This is how we look after Holi celebration. Haha
Chirag Dhangar EVEN BREATHING OXYGEN US RACIST IN AMERICA. TOTAL BS LIBERALS. SO SICK AND TIRED OF THEM
Painting your face black is racist everywhere. Not just America. And you can't compare blackface to Holi. That's some mental gymnastics you did to justify what you saw. Just accept something wrong had been done in a past Era, learn from the mistakes of the people who lived before you and move on. Don't attempt whataboutism.

Thanks so much for watching this. It just bought such a huge smile on my face. It was a cult movie during my childhood. All of us might have watched this movie multiple times and can still watch it without getting bored. You got to watch this movie drama, comedy, action all in balance. Historically, there is no white-black racism in India. Though india had caste system but nothing based on skin color. So, it was no big deal in india to color faces that way. And today also it is not, becos India has no history for skin color discrimination.
We did, we do. Just that back then it wasn't as sensitive a topic. When I was a kid, if I called a dark person "kalia", nobody would have batted an eye (but my mom slapped me when I was 8 for this reason, and I learned my lesson).
and there is fair n lovely ad

Nothing racist here back then budget restrain so couldn't heir people from west so used color to paint face
No ulterior motives
Indian anyway are dark skin proud to have it
Are god are also dark
👍👍
Yes we come in every colors
You know the diff between dark skin and painting the face black right? Those Indian dancers were already dark, Dir painted their faces jet black for a jungle-themed dance number. Similar to what Hollywood did in the 1940s original King Kong movie.
I can't believe people are defending this blatant racism/black face in the comments with their whataboutery abt Indiana Jones or by simply pleading ignorance.

Indiana Jones and the temple of Doom. Around the same time as this movie Mr. India.
Perhaps you'd try to explain the scenes, images, and symbols in that?
I rest my case.
even Hollywood has racist n sexist scenes. It’s not a competition. What is ur case
@@ankitpatel468 It was a different time period. You can't blame either of them. I think thats what he was trying to say.

I think you need to watch a Vir Das standup where he explains the Racist thing connecting an Indian prospective. Watch that to understand may be.
Watch abroad understanding @osr
Why is everyone saying it's not meant to be racist? For the longest time, Americans didn't 'mean' to be racist either. This is clearly blackface, irrespective of what was meant. And Indians are quite racist, according to black people who visit as tourists, students or even live in India (there are testimonial articles about this). Our obsession with fair skin says enough about whether or not we are racist.
Sridevi was the superstar!! One of ze best actress in indian cinema.. watch her acting in movie Sadma. There is a song Aye zindagi gale laga ley... iconic song... great song n great movie

The role played by Late Sridevi was a reporter from a news paper and before this song she was heard some secret conversation of those men present in the song.
The film was directed by Mr. Shekhar Kapoor
whats up with the black faces? the concept of racism wasnt there in 80s india.

One thing you guys should understand is that tension between blacks and whites are an alien concept to us. Though an odd choice, the use of black color on the faces is no different than using blue all over the face.
