A serial adaptation of the classic wartime adventure by the legendary thriller-writer. This drama boasts an excellent lead cast including a young Toby Stephens and David Rintoul - a future Mr. Rochester and a sometime-Mr. Darcy... Evidently the series was some sort of a success, as the following year Radio 4 adapted another classic war story with a famous film adaptation - Nicholas Monsarrat's The Cruel Sea, broadcast in 1998.

I can't help but think that Toby Stephens is a really underrated actor! His work in so many radio dramatisations is excellent, i think.

Interesting observation, I think you're right. I expect you're aware of his portrayal of James Bond on the radio... and even though he's always been pretty busy on tv and film he's never quite become as well known as you'd expect him to...

@@MysticalMagpie-wo5fn Oh indeed, I found those online (and have re-listened to them through your site) since, as is unaccountably often the case, the BBC only kept them briefly available on their Sounds app. Very good adaptations, I thought!

Between this, The Cruel Sea, and The Eagle Has Landed, BBC radio were on a bit of a roll in the 1990s, when it came to outdoing the movie adaptations...
